Paint Space Abstract
Glenn Hirsch
Space in abstract art can be relatively shallow or flat, ie, flat patterns of shapes on a flat background.
Space in abstract art can have more depth, as if the viewer sees into a space in which the shapes “swim” in an atmospheric void.
What follows are pairs of abstractions: a flat space and then a space with more depth.
They’re all good, it’s just that they’re different.
The space is flat (Arshile Gorky 1940)
The space has more depth (Arshile Gorky 1943)
The space is flat (Andre Masson 1960)
The space has more depth (Andre Masson 1955)
The space is flat (Kandinsky 1940)
The space has more depth (Avinash Chandra 1963)
The space is flat (Philip Guston 1959)
The space has more depth (Francis Picabia 1913)
The space is flat.(Robert Motherwell 1945)
The space has more depth (Jackson Pollock 1952)
The space has more depth (Graham Sutherland 1973)
