IMPRESSIONISM is a genre of painting in
which the main objective is to capture the
light and the moment.
The impressionists aimed to show the
visual impression the scene made on them
by means of shimmering dots of light
and colour. They especially liked working
outdoors because it is outside that the
light conditions and colours change most
noticebly depending on the time of day and
the season.
EXPRESSIONISM does not portray the
external appearance of objects, but the
painter’s own view. Expressionist
painters changed the forms of things and
used intensive colours.
SURREALISM Is interested in what goes
beyond reality. Familiar things are
presented in way never seen before and
are linked to surprising and mysterious
paintings in a dreamlike manner.
REALISM represents subject matter
truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding
artistic conventions, implausible, exotic and
supernatural elements. It consists of
imitating reality just the way it is.
