Chair’s Letter

Is it really October? The summer was so incredible this year even extending its touch into

September and although we saw children returning to school we held our breath and just enjoyed

it. I recently opened a closet door pulling out the heavier jacket and sighed but then I paused. I

thought… wait a minute…this is Victoria and summer had its joys but fall has its charms (and

pumpkins).

Adding to all of fall’s wonders is the great list of events coming up at our Club.

I want to begin my note this month by welcoming Ian Case who has joined the Club’s Board of

Directors as one of the Presidential appointees. Ian has been a special advisor for some time and

we welcome his insights. On behalf of the members of the Board I want to thank Janice Johnson,

who had held that spot, for her many years of service on the board including involvement on a

number of committees. Thanks Janice.

I am pleased to say that the fountain is now fully functional and providing that oh so important

aeration to the pond. I hope that you have had a chance to see how much the turtles and ducks love

it….they have set up observer stations on the log nearby to ensure they have the best view.

Our recent Music Bingo night was a great success. The music was great and the ink dabbers got a

real workout. The range of music was extensive…Doris Day to Taylor Swift. The attendees even

sang along.

The work of artist Bill Zuk continues to delight our walls. Have a peek they are amazing – what

talent.

What does October bring:…well, the Minions who delight both kids and adults are being

celebrated with fun and games (and of course food) on October 24th. Did you say pizza!!

October 31st and the stars will be out for Halloween at the Club. It is time to dazzle and take a bow

as your favourite celebrity..who will you be? (Or perhaps you just want to watch as they stroll by

while you enjoy the amazing cocktails and different food stations) You must read the details further

on in the newsletter – a truly wonderful way to send October on its way (and yummy too!)

But that is not all…..

• On November 21st we celebrate wine (why not) and food (yes!) with Sea Star winery

from Pender Island. I have heard some amazing comments about their wines so I can hardly wait

(aren’t we lucky they are so close). This is also a special night as we step back to Medieval times

with Marcus Milwright who will take us back to the wine and culture of that era.

We named our blended white wine Salish Sea to celebrate the

distinctive growing region that we are blessed to call home.

Coaxing out the best qualities of Ortega and Siegerrebe, our

winemaker has captured the aromas of melon, grapefruit,

peach, guava and herbs, all contributing to a clean and fresh

flavour with a long finish. An expressive and aromatic wine.

Sea Star Vineyard’s Blanc De Noir is made from

the Pinot Noir grape, which is grown by our

friends at Clam Bay Farm on Pender Island. The

Pinot Noir grape, a “Star” originally from

Burgundy, flourishes in our Southern Gulf Island

climate. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed,

embellishing the wine with an appealing colour

to match its enticing flavour.

Four carefully chosen vineyards in the sun-baked Oliver and

Osoyoos regions of BC are the sources for the exceptional

quality Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc

grapes that have been crafted into this rich Meritage blend.

Encore is the worthy successor to our winemaker’s award

winning Debut. A winner before it is out of the gate, this wine is

barrel-aged in French oak for 18 months.

Prose is our Riesling Estate dessert wine graced with a touch of

Category 12 Unsanctioned Our flavourful Saison is discreetly sessionable. It boasts a crisp body with a

dry finish and a bouquet that is distinctly Belgian. Hints of clove and spice,

complemented by aromatic hops, make us stand out where it matters most.

Bratwurst

-2 tablespoons unsalted butter

-1 medium yellow onion, sliced

-1 can (14 ounce) sauerkraut,

drained

-1/2 cup sour cream

-1/2 teaspoon dill weed

-1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced

-1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds

-2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed

-2 cups Muenster cheese, shredded

-2 tablespoons poppy seeds

-2 tablespoons sesame seeds

-1 bottle of Category 12

- Unsanctioned Beer

Brat and Kraut Strudel-Serves 6

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Prepare the links according to package instructions. Cool slightly, and then cut into half-moon slices.

In a large sauté pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until caramelized, 8 to 10 minutes. Add

the sausage and sauerkraut heat through.

In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, garlic, dill and caraway. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Spray two baking sheets with non-stick spray. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry on each baking sheet.

Spread the sour-cream mixture over each pastry sheet to within 1/2 inch of the edge.

Spoon the sausage mixture down the center of each pastry sheet.

Top with cheese. Lightly brush the edges with Unsactioned Beer. Fold the long pastry side of each sheet over the

filling and pinch the ends together to seal.

With a sharp knife, pierce the strudels to create steam vents. Brush the tops of the strudels with beer. Sprinkle with

the poppy and sesame seeds. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown. Let stand 10 minutes before slicing.
