HistoryThe history of Pakistan encompasses the history of the

regionconstituting modern Pakistan. Prior to independence in

1947,the land that is now Pakistan was ruled in different

periods bylocal kings and numerous imperial powers. The ancient

historyof the region comprising present-day Pakistan also

includessome of the oldest empires of South Asia and some of its

majorcivilizations. By the 18th century the land was

incorporatedinto British India. Pakistan's political history began withthe birth of the All India Muslim League in 1906 to protect"Muslim interests, amid neglect and under-

representation" andto oppose Congress and growing Indian nationalism in

returnthe British Rule would decide to grant local self-rule.

On 29 December 1930, philosopher Sir Muhammad

Iqbal called for an independent new state in"northwestern India for Indian Muslims". TheLeague rose to popularity in the late1930s. Muhammad Ali Jinnah espoused

the TwoNation Theory and led the League to adoptthe Lahore Resolution of 1940, demanding theformation of independent states in the East

and theWest of British India. Eventually, a successfulmovement led by Jinnah gained independence

fromthe British, on 14 August 1947.

PoliticsPolitics of Pakistan takes place within theFramework of a federal republic, where the systemof government has at times beenparliamentary, presidential, or semi-presidential. Inthe current parliamentary system,the President of Pakistan is the largelyceremonial head of state the Prime Minister is headof government, and there is a multi-partysystem. Executive power is exercised by thegovernment. Legislative power is largely vested inthe Parliament.
