He has found himself inpioneering roles with TCS havingopened its branches in TauheedCommercial and ShamsheerCommercial. 1990. He left TCS to set up his own Franchise in August2008 while serving the Company as Senior Sales Manager.

“While performing a job one is always a bit fearful about startinga business,” says Tariq, the only franchisee to be running two outlets. “Butwhen the TCS Management made the offer to me it was too good to resist, specially since it concerned an area that I was well familiar with. My totalconcentration is on making the franchise a success, and in this I follow Mr.Jinnah’s exhortation of work, work, and more work!” Tariq says he has notime for rest and recreation given the state of the economy and the call toaction stations across the board. However, Tariq would do well to rememberthat all work and no play make Jack a dull boy. But Tariq’s no Jack! And hecertainly ain’t no boy!

CONDUCTING BUSINESS UNDER FIREMuhammad Kaleem and Ghulam Akbar filed a joint submissionthat dealt with the conduct of business under fire in the mega-city of Karachi gone berserk with pain, fear and rage. The 28thof December 2007 saw the country come to a screeching, violent halt. Benazir Bhutto was no more, felled by an assassin’sbullet. From the Khyber to the Arabian Sea, for three dayspeople lost their minds and vent their anger and anguish inunprecedented fearsome fashion. For three continuous daysand nights Muhammad Kaleem andGhulam Akbar manned the actionstations on empty stomachs, ensuring as best as they could thecontinuity of business at TCS. In abizarre sort of way they had preparedfor this drill just six months before, when the city was plunged into chaosand confusion, murder and mayhemon the 12th day of May 2007, withriots, arson and killings at severalcentrally-located places, terrorizingthe whole city. TCS couriers bravelyweathered the life threateningsituation, and made as manydeliveries and pickups as werepossible. Providing them with close-in support were Muhammad Kaleemand Ghulam Akbar who stayed backfor two days and nights workingfeverishly to keep things going onempty stomachs and hearts full ofprayers that the madness wouldrelent and better sense would prevail.

COOL & COURAGEOUSZahid Iqbal was on duty at Faisalabad’s Circular Road ExpressCentre the day Mohatrama Benzair Bhutto joined the hallowedranks of the Shaheeds. There was sporadic violence and hightension prevailed. Zahid Iqbal had a crisis on his hands withtwo hysterical ladies, an elderly gentnot in the best of health, a teenagerdesperately trying to put on a braveface, and an injured man who hadcrashed through the glass door ofthe Express Center while seekingrefuge from the street violenceoutside. Zahid Iqbal kept his cooland courage and managed thesituation to the satisfaction of allconcerned, including the TCS AreaOffice which received its materialbag weighing over 16 kilos, deliveredon foot.

Every year the rank and file at TCS gets invited toshare with the CONNECT readership somethingextraordinary that might have transpired during thecourse of their daily routines. In the life of a courierno two days are the same, with every day bringingwith it a fresh set of challenges. What does remainthe same, however, is the courier’s commitment tohis unwritten, self-governed mandate that puts the‘Customer and Company above Self’ in a corporateculture that celebrates the TCS Core Values ofQuality; Profitability through Efficiency; Justice; EthicalBehavior; and Exemplary Conduct. These CoreValues, as defined by the TCS Chairman Mr. KhalidAwan, have shaped an organization that haswithstood the test of time, and grown from strengthto strength in its pursuit of customer satisfaction.

This time we celebrate Ten Tales of extraordinarycourage and commitment, and are sure that thereare many others that have gone unreported out ofeither modesty, or because the TCS Family hasgrown so used to traveling the extra mile in theservice of the customer that it does not accord anyspecial significance to such acts. AGAINST ALL ODDSM. Sohail found himself in the thick of things, playing hideand seek with rioters on Karachi roads the day followingBenazir Bhutto’s assassination. As per routine he hadembarked on pickups from Guru Mandir, Orangi and TariqRoad Express Centres. By dusk he arrived at Banaraswhere several vehicles were on fire with a crowd of anti-social elements looting innocent people and damagingprivate property. Then suddenly came the deafening soundof gun fire and a big sharp-edged rock hit M. Sohail’s righthand which began bleeding. They fled through narrowstreets and finally reached Habib Bank Chowrangi where, like all other places, angry mobs were on the rampage. Apolice van with armed guards appeared to M. Sohail’s relief, and zigzagging through the side lanes they finally reachedGolimar. Gulshan Hub was totally under control of therioters who were damaging, destroying and setting on fireprivate and government property. The pain in his injuredhand had unbearably increased and required immediatebandaging. After what seemedan eternity they finally reachedthe Gulshan Hub and M. Sohailgot down from the van and rushedtowards the hub holding the bagsof material that he had collected. He then gathered the staff andescorted them to the van. A battlehad finally been won and he washappy to have delivered thegoods. However, it was anightmare that is likely to haunthim all his life.

NEVER ON A SUNDAY!Manzoor Abro reports on how his plans for a restful Sundaywith the family got turned upside down when he decided todrop in at the office very briefly to check up on a pendingmatter. Just his luck that a very agitated customer fromIslamabad was on the phone with the officer on duty, insistingon speaking with the top management. For a moment thereManzoor Abro was tempted to duck the issue and carry onwith his weekend picnic plans. But like always the familyhad to take a back seat, and hevolunteered to help resolve theproblem, a very knotty problemthat involved a passport and airlineticket that was two days behindscheduled delivery. It took the restof the Sunday and persistentfollow-up to trace the missingdocuments, and it was close tonightfall when they were finallydelivered and the customer’sagitation turned into gratitude.

CASE OF THE TWO SHAHJEESSiraj and Tariq Khan got into a most unusual tangle withtwo consignees by the same name of Syed Munawwar AliShah, both collectors of antiques, and both expecting ashipment from their dealer! Talk about co-incidents, and thisabsolutely had to be the mother of all co-incidents! Weighing8.5 kgs., the consignment was received at Mardan fromLahore with insufficient address. A Mr. Humayoon arrivedposing as the consignee's driver and insisted on receivingthe shipment. On production of his CNIC the consignmentwas handed over to him. The next day Syed Munawwar AliShah turned up to collect his shipment! The consignee wasflabbergasted and said he had no driver by the name ofHumayoon. The declaration made by the consignee threwSiraj and Tariq into a quandary and they stood theredumbfounded. The consignee hit the roof, and said theshipment contained a 300-year old valuable piece of antique, originally from Indonesia, that had cost him some 15 lakhsof rupees, and threatened to sue the Company for damages.Working through NADRA Humayoon’s address andphotograph were obtained, some20 miles off Mardan City in avillage known as Jamal Garhi butthe man had shifted from thatlocation. Inquiries from the areaNazim bore fruit, and Humayoonwas traced to a village calledMirchkokali. It was late at nightwhen Siraj and Tariq arrived there, and after some reassuringHumayoon came to the door andaccepted that he had indeedtaken the consignment and givenit to his boss Syed Munawwar AliShah, who in turn upon beingcontacted on the phone acceptedhaving received the consignmentand admitted that it was an error,a rare one at that, since he toowas expecting a similarconsignment! The actualconsignee Syed Munawwar AliShah was delighted to say theleast upon receiving his antique, and profusely thanked andcongratulated TCS for promptlytracing the consignment.

To all our valued customers who havebrought us this far

While TCS, the express logisticscompany, was formally inauguratedon the 4th of May 1983, it gavenew meaning to the word ‘express’in 1985 when TCS signed up withthe Pakistan Banking Council toexpedite the clearance of outstationcheques, and reduce theprocessing time from three weeksto seventy-two hours. The enormityof what we accomplished at TCSby the successful execution of thatContract was such that we were

humbled in nouncertain

manner. As aresult of ourtaking upthat most

daunting,and, in the

manifold in thenational economy ofPakistan, impacting

positively theprosperity of trade,

commerce andindustry.

TCS helped turnthe system

around, and what came to beknown as the Banking Contractoccupies a preeminent place in thehistory of TCS, an unrivalledbenchmark of what the privatesector can achieve when calledupon in the service of national

interest. TCS has earned its stripesmeeting and exceedingexpectations in less than enablingenvironments.

Given the storm clouds on theworld’s economic horizon, there isa sense of urgency in the TCS rankand file as it gears up for an

operating environment that will nodoubt be less than enabling. TheCompany that Engineer KhalidAwan founded has found itself intrail blazing roles, and made itscontribution to the development ofan entire industry focused onexpress logistics.

Core values as defined by thefounding chairman have given therobust Company a firm anchoringand direction: Quality; Profitabilitythrough Efficiency; Justice; EthicalBehavior; and Exemplary Conducthave in turn created a corporateculture of ‘Customer and Companyabove Self’ at TCS.

Engineer Khalid Awan has comea long way from those early dayswhen TCS was a boutiqueoperation, with his craft well pilotedby his trusted aide and TCS GroupCEO Jamil Janjua. Saqib Hamdanihas manned the action stationsduring a crucial period of the firm’sgrowth, first as Head of Operations, then as Chief Operating Officer, and now as the Chief ExecutiveOfficer, overseeing the relentlessdynamics of a 24/7 operation. Summer Vacations Well Spent! In keeping with a fine tradition TCS and the School of Leadership(SoL) successfully undertook the oratorical saga of Hyde ParkJuniors (HPJ) once again this year. The orientation took placeat a five star setting in Karachi with over 175 students and theirparents and guardians in attendance.

The highlight of the evening was the interactive session onparenting by Kamran Rizvi, Director School of Leadership.Participants of the program engaged in learning the art ofdebating and declaiming, and underwent a rigorous regimeof workshops designed to help them overcoming their fearof public speaking.

Speaking on the occasion Rizwan Hafeez, TCS Vice PresidentBusiness Development & Regional Drector North, went downmemory lane, reminding the gathering of young boys andgirls that TCS had started the Hyde Park Juniors programin 2003, as part of its 20 years celebrations, in realizationof its responsibility towards society and peopleempowerment.

“This year’s program is even closer to our hearts as itcoincides with our 25 years celebrations,” said Rizwan.“We have a business tagline which says, “Helping youSucceed in So Many Ways” and this is also one of ourways of demonstrating this tagline, i.e., Helping Youboys and girls to Succeed in life. I recollect another one, which is “We Share Your Passion”. By your presencehere we understand that you have the Passion andthe desire to do something in life.” Rizwan thankedKamran Rizvi, Shireen Naqvi, Talha and the entireSchool of Leadership team for being with TCS everyyear and making HPJ a grand success.

Concieved by Jamil Janjua during his stint with theBritish Council in Karachi many moons ago, publicspeaking, debating and declaming were seen as aroute to empowering young Pakistani adults through

enhancing their powers of expression, and theassociated self-esteem and confidence. The process

was based on a series of training workshops andcompetitions during the summer break, and the focus

was on girls and boys in the age bracket of 14 to 17

years. Needless to say that the program was a grand

success, and produced, amongst others, Sidra Iqbal,

who went on to becoming a HPJ trainer of great repute

and is now a celebrity television talk-show host. When Jamil Janjua rejoined TCS as its CEO it wasnatural that he should put HPJ as an integral part of

the Company's CSR activity. What possibly developed

as a personal passion made eminent sense at aprofessional level. The newly christened TCS HPJtook Karachi's school system by storm, and the TCS

corporate colleagues joined in with great ethusiasmas co-sponsors. The Royal Rodale Club at Seaviewwas the hub of competitive activity, while the workshops

were conducted at the School of Leadership. Citibank's

Zubyr Soomro graced as chief guest the grand finale

at the Finance and Trade Center.Meanwhile back at the ranch the TCS Students Express

promised the kids that the TCS Speedy would get their

college applications to the UK, USA, Australia, or any

other part of the world at amazingly affordable rates.

Adding value to the spirit of enterpriseMohammad Arif is leading a fine team at OCTARA as itsBusiness Head, and what started as a CSR initiative onthe 20th anniversary of TCS has developed into a fullfledged business concern as TCS celebrates its SilverJubilee, focused on developing the human resource inPakistan’s corporate landscape. In the current air of crisisgenerated by the global recession, OCTARA’s mandatehas taken on a fresh urgency as businesses look toweathering the storm through an improved caliber of theirhuman resource that can think out-of-the-box, and is capableof lateral movement, innovation and intrapreneurship.

Perhaps the most memorable OCTARA event was the jampacked session with Dr. Prof. Edward de Bono, the fatherof lateral thinking. Another memorable session was withProf. Kenneth P. Morse, the Senior Lecturer of the MITSloan School of Management, and a great champion ofintrapreneurs whom he defines as creative and innovativeemployees of long established companies who recognizethat unless they can develop entrepreneurial behaviorsand activities, they may become redundant in an increasinglyinnovative and competitive world economic environment.OCTARA and its impressive line-up of Marketing andManagement Gurus have a very central role to play inbringing about this critical transformation within the Pakistanimindset in the workplace.
