New Meeting Location—Boys & Girls Club, GH

Holiday Party—December 17, 2009—Boys & Girls Club -6:45—9:15 p.m.

January 11—PAL Members Show at Kimball Gallery/Coffee Shop

Art Reception—Kimball Gallery—January 17, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

President’s Message—December 2009

Happy Holiday’s to all! I hope to see lots of members at the annual PAL Holiday Potluck Party and Gift Exchange at the new Boys and Girls Club. It is always fun to take the time to meet and talk to

members and catch up on what people are doing. I hope to see you there! I sure hope someone can come at 6 pm to help me decorate. I have a couple boxes of fun things to use but only a half an hour to decorate…

There is something about coming to the end of the year that makes you count your blessings- for me it is health, family, friends, faith, & creative endeavors.

It’s also good to take stock of what was accomplished- a wedding, improvements in my artwork, an award, getting my website going, taking on PAL presidency…. as well as what is left to accomplish. My personal ―to do list‖ includes more artistic growth, ex-panding to other media, finding financial success doing what I love, better organization at home, and a chance to help PAL move towards our ultimate goal- a permanent home. It is good to dream and plan for what you want, because if you don’t, it will never hap-pen. We are in trying economic times, but with the challenges, sometimes opportunities also appear. By making sure we pass information between the different groups we be-long to (or know a member of), we help both groups. Is there a unique chance to work with another group to find a home for the Arts in Gig Harbor? Are there ways we can help other arts groups to be successful that can help us all reach the goal of an Arts Cen-ter? No one in our County or City government is going to plunk down money for an Arts Center unless the community (that’s all of us and our friends and neighbors) keep work-ing towards it, asking for it, & showing the need for it. We need to be vocal, we need to listen and look for opportunities, and we need to be sure to communicate any informa-tion that can help us in our quest back to the PAL board. We are so lucky to have this vi-brant group of talented people- over 200 artists! With all those creative minds, surely we can come up with some new ideas for making money, overcoming funding issues, and finding a home of our own!

Have an OUTSTANDING NEW YEAR!!! Anne Knapp

From Doug Michie: I went to the artists' reception for the Foss Calendar contest last evening, which was held at the Kirsten Gallery in Seattle. I was very pleased to see that, of the 12 paintings accepted, 3 came from PAL members. THAT IS 25% ! Georgina Candelaria Wells, Mike Corcoran (new member), and I were all accepted. I think that is pretty darn good.

The next Peninsula Art League member show will be exhibited in January at the Kimball Gal-lery. Fran Dreiling, the owner, will be hosting the show for the third year. An afternoon reception will be held on Sunday January 17th with hors d'oeuvre and beverages from 3pm until 5pm. Art de-livery and pick up times are on the entry form which . A copy of the entry form can be downloaded from the PAL website. Our judge for this show is Val Persoon, an accomplished Tacoma artist and instructor with many years of experience and an impressive range of technique and style. Her web-site is valpersoon.com.

The Regular Kimall Artists’ Show is hanging now at the Kim-ball Gallery, please stop in to see their art and enjoy!

New paintings by Mary J McInnis are currently being featured at Collective Visions Gallery in Downtown Bremerton at 4th and Pacific until January 16th, 2010. "The Intimate Forest: Paths and Trails of the Pacific Northwest" had a great opening reception on December 4th. Many thanks to all who came!

Still Life Group

The Still Life group is small but active. It meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Nichols Center on Fox Island., from 10am- 2pm. January’s Still Life Group will be on Wed January 13th and will have an Asian theme. I have quite a few items to bring- Additional items are welcome. Fox Paw Painters are also meeting (every Wednesday) and we usually all break for lunch at noon to

chat (and occasionally share cookies).

In December, we did a White on White theme for 5 artists- and it ended up that everyone painted or drew a different section of the (large) still life. It is fun to see each artist’s different view and style. It’s a good way to keep the artistic juices flowing in the cold dark months of winter, plus an opportunity to meet and chat with other artists.

PAL Holiday Party—Gift Exchange

The Gift Exchange is very simple—if you wish

to get a gift, you bring a gift and take part in the

festivities—if you don’t choose do to that, just don’t

take a gift and don’t worry about it.

You can bring any item—try to stay in the

“Art” related field if you can and in the $10.00

range of expense. Bring something you made

yourself if you want— or anything you like—wrap it

up or put it in a bag—and you can sign your name

and prepare to enjoy the Gift Exchange!

PAL minutes Nov 17, 2009

Meeting held at Point Fosdick Library, Gig Harbor

Members present: Anne Knapp, Arvid Anderson, Sherri Weitzel, Virginia Alvarez, Jon Lonning, Susan Blaise, Mary McInnis, Myrna Binion, Patti McQuillen, Russ and Christy Camerer.

Called to order at 10:05 by President Anne Knapp

Minutes duly moved and seconded as is.

Treasurer’s Report – $135,392.00

Old Business:

The next general meeting will be at the Boys & Girls club room, to be open by 6:15pm for those who want to come early to social-ize. We should have a double room this time.

Winter members show – Scheduled to take place at the Kimball Gallery. See more information in newsletter.

Christmas party – Thursday Dec 17th at the Boys & Girls club; we need volunteers to help set up, decorate, etc.; more details to come.

Budget – suggestion was made to separate insurance and storage costs from General Operating Expenses.

Festival – We will be renewing our listing on Festivalonline.com which costs $90 per year; we already have 30 new applications for next year; we will offer screening via online or by mail; fees and hours need to be confirmed in listing; there was discussion of having more street/music performers; we would like to find a grant to pay for public art participation; we would like to include more children’s events;

Membership – the directory will be ready in January

It was duly moved and seconded not to have a board meeting in December.

It was duly moved and seconded that the board voting members would include the President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice Presi-dent, Secretary, Treasurer, the membership chairman, the festival chairman, and three members-at-large.

Myrna Binion is no longer a bank signee. Anne Knapp and Jon Lonning are the only two bank signees.

New Business:

Board meetings need to be moved to new location as Uddenburgs is no longer available; perhaps staying at the Gig Harbor library? Or maybe the Boys & Girls club?

Grant possibilities from Black Rock (Artist’s Trust); only for public, community based projects; out of San Francisco CA; can be used toward Festival community project with other arts groups joining in.

Pierce Co Arts Commission – Anne, Myrna and Arvid had a meeting with PCAC which proved to be less than satisfying due to PCAC’s consultant’s lack of understanding of the Gig Harbor arts scene and Peninsula Art League; to PCAC it’s all about the greater Tacoma area; suggested that we invite them to our events; communication among arts groups in Gig Harbor can be better maybe through links on our websites? It was suggested that we do a joint show with Key Peninsula’s Two Waters and offer space in PAL newsletter.

Salmon-Chanted Evening’s Bill Fogerty will present info this month for next year.

Should we do the PAL Sale again?

New/used grids may be available from Marti Green for purchase by PAL if needed—storage is always an issue for us.

Grants – watch for opportunities and pass on any pertinent information.

Meeting adjourned at 11: 19am

Respectfully submitted by Mary McInnis
