STAND DOWN STATUS Dan Aseltine- Veterans Director

The Stand Down for Homeless Veterans that typically takes place in August has been postponed. No date has been set yet for the next upcoming Stand Down. The following was released:

At the Sacramento Stand Down Association, the well-being, and safety of our high risk clients, staff, and volunteers is of topmost concern and is what drives us every day. Therefore, we have chosen to postpone our multi day stand down event, till the risk of infection is minimalized or removed. We will then reschedule this event and carry on our mission!

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities Congratulations to the Miguel and Deborah Sabral Family, June 2020 Family of the Month. Miguel and Deborah have been married for over twenty-three years and have two sons, Daniel and Christopher and a daughter Trina. The family has been very supportive of their parish, the Knights of Columbus, and their country. Brother Miguel joined the Knights on August 17, 1995 and received his Second and Third Degrees on September 24, 1995. Although Brother Miguel is credited with only eight years of service within the Knights, his time was interrupted by his service as a member of the United States Army. When called upon, he gallantly served four tours of duty in Iraq, and two and a-half tours in Afghanistan, being wounded four times, and each time he was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from the United States Army on January 15, 2015. Council 4970 greatly missed his presence during his service in the Middle East, and upon his retirement from the US Army, his presence has again been a boon to the council. Miguel and members have been active in various council activities, including the time he was serving in the US Army. He has chaired the Knights of Columbus Coloring Contest, and he has assisted at the Annual Free Throw Contest and filled the role of Santa Claus at the Council's Annual Christmas Party. He also served as a Store Captain during several Intellectual Disabilities Drives (Tootsie Roll Drives) where his leadership and hard work led to very successful donations. Brother Miguel, and members of his family, have also been involved in the council's annual Fireworks Booth, providing his trailer for the daily transportation of the fireworks from and to the storage facility, thereby avoiding the expense of renting a van, and saving the council from a large expense. This year, Bother Miguel was also a Co-Chairman of the event, and his time, skills, and efforts led to an extremely successful year, in which sales set a record for the council, a record which probably will never be broken, at least for many years. Brother Miguel just recently completed this past Columbian Year as the Worthy Grand Knight, and in spite of the problems associated with the coronavirus, his leadership and recruitment skills enabled the council to receive numerous awards, including qualifying the council for the prestigious Star Council Award, an award that is extremely hard to achieve. Deborah previously was employed at TasCal and is now retired. She has served as a care giver, and now devotes her time to taking care of her family. Council 4970 is very fortunate and blessed to have the Miguel and Deborah Miguel Family as members of the council.

MY FIRST YEAR AS BOOTH BOSS By PGK Miguel Sabral

This year we had a fantastic year during our fireworks sales. The first 5 days we had great sales in the booth. We stocked the shelfs with the firework items from left to right and front to rear. On the last day we had only 1 box of pop-its, 1 box with 3 Pyro Packs, 12 Family Packs, and 16 Red Devils, so we shut down around 3:30 pm that day. We did have outstanding weather for the 7 days that we spent at the fireworks booth. I want to give thanks to Lady Knight Debra Sabral for coming with me every morning to pick up the trailer and returning it to TNT storage. I want to thank Lady Knight Shannon Langer, PGK Michael Corcoran, and PGK Larry Rositani for being our cashiers this year. During the 7 days of setting up, tearing down the booth and packing the boxes, and storing all of them back into the trailer, I want to thank: PGK Michael Langer, PGK Peter Kilkenny, PGK Loren Wallin, PGK Joe Romanazzi, PGK Gene Gobbo, GK Michael Dougherty, DGK Josh Figueroa, PGK Jerry Marenich, Brothers Todd Wilson, Shawn Herrick, Tim Spinelli, and Nick for all the help they provided during our fireworks sales. PGK Joe Kievernagel made his rounds to our booth and he was very please what he saw. I want to thank God our Father for helping me as Council Fireworks Chairman; thank you Brother Knights and Lady Knights. Gross Sales: $46,551.57 Net Profit: $23,324.89

JOE’S CAFÉ…Stop by for a tasty bit! Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Sometimes When We Retire, Our Real Life’s Work Begins

Many of us in this Council are already retired, many others are dreaming about retiring soon; and still others are gainfully employed waiting for their opportunity in the years ahead to hopefully taste the freedom retirement brings from the daily grind and heavy responsibilities of a job. Retiring from work does not mean retiring from life. It is just a new beginning, not the end. The important thing is not to retire from something but to have something to retire to that is fun and will keep one busy and out of “trouble”. We can all find numerous things to do in retirement-- just find something! If anyone needs help in figuring out what to do, start with reviewing a list of our activities and programs and volunteering to get more involved in our Council. Excuses will be fewer and WE NEED EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE if we want Council 4970 to remain VIBRANT and STRONG in the years ahead. As God’s children, we are capable of great things. But too often we don’t even scratch the surface of our capabilities. Sophia Loren, World-famous Italian actress and one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, once remarked, “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age”. It is hard to believe but Ms. Loren turns 86 years old in September this year, so I suppose her age and life experiences do give her a certain amount of credibility on this subject. Good human examples of what Ms. Loren is talking about would definitely have to include Michelangelo, Benjamin Franklin, and Grandma Moses. These folks were all in their 70’s when they did some of their best work. These included Michelangelo designing the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, Benjamin Franklin inventing bifocal eyeglasses, and Grandma Moses beginning her painting career.

So far, this article has only addressed aspects of career retirement. Did you know that there is also such a thing as spiritual retirement? During his lifetime, St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) gave spiritual direction to many individuals. His book, Introduction to the Devout Life (1608) is a compilation of letters and notes used in spiritual direction. He writes, “To make spiritual progress, strive as often as possible through the day to place yourself in God’s Presence. Consider what God does, and what you are doing; —you will see His Eyes ever fixed upon you in Love incomparable.” Be sure that while externally occupied with business and social duties, you frequently retire within the solitude of your own heart. That solitude need not be in any way hindered by the crowds which surround you—they surround your body, not your soul, and your heart remains alone in the Sole Presence of God (Part 2, Chapter XII). In short, this saint viewed prayer as the key to love of God. St. Francis de Sales saw the pursuit of holiness as something possible to each and every Christian, regardless of vocation, temperament or age.

My Brothers, for some retirement may feel like an ending, but it is truly a beginning. If we successfully manage our career retirement and practice spiritual retirement in the sole presence of God, we can bring joy to the rest of our earthly lives and beyond. Although there is no reference to retirement in the Bible, conventional wisdom and our own faith tells us that God’s retirement plan for us has to be simply out of this world.

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Air Force Veteran Donald Harmata, who served as a prosecuting and defense attorney

during the Cold War. Originally from Virginia, Donald Harmata attended Virginia Tech. He was a distinguished graduate of Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps.

After graduating in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Harmata commissioned as a second lieutenant and attended law school at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He served as a member of the William and Mary Law Review, a top-ranking scholarly law journal. Harmata earned his juris doctor degree in 1975 and after passing the Virginia Bar Exam, entered the Air Force.

In December 1975, Harmata went to McClellan Air Logistics Center in California. He served for the next four years as a prosecutor and defense attorney and worked in the field of administrative and environmental law. In January 1976, Harmata attended the Judge Advocate General (JAG) School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. While attending the JAG school, Harmata took a private tour of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.,

including the Justices’ Conference Room, and Courtroom. In the summer of 1976, he took a two-month procurement officer course at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. Procurement officers ensure that their group makes appropriate purchases of goods or services to resell or use. They also assign duties to staff members, review the work

and draw up plans for the purchase of equipment, services and supplies. During his time at McClellan, Harmata served two additional roles. He worked as an installation tax assistance officer and trained tax advisers. Tax assistants help file annual or quarterly tax returns or assist with the review and filing of file customers’ tax returns. He also once briefed a report to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon on a

classified project in 1979. After completing his service at McClellan, Harmata went to the inactive Reserve until his honorable discharge in 1985. During his service, Harmata received an Air Force Commendation Medal for his work at McClellan AFB.

While in the inactive Reserve, Harmata established a private legal practice in Sacramento, California, where he specializes in civil and business law. Harmata is active in the Catholic fraternal order of the Knights of Columbus and the Papal Order of the Holy Sepulchre. He is also a member of the Marines Memorial Association. In his free time, he volunteers at homeless shelters

and works as an officer of the California State Bar Public Law Section. Thank you for your service!

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Lawrence Niekamp, who served in the honor guard and worked as an administrative specialist during the Vietnam War.

Originally from southern California, Niekamp attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1965. After earning his master’s degree in counseling from California State University in 1967, he enlisted in the Army and attended basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Toward the end of basic training, Niekamp decided not to enter Officer Candidate School. He instead applied for a position with the post counseling office. After being turned down for the position, Niekamp went to the 8th Army Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. While with the 8th Army, Niekamp trained as part of the honor guard. Niekamp briefly served as a guard at the commanding general’s residence. After two months, Niekamp returned to the personnel unit and was told he could learn radar repair if he transferred units. He explained he had a master’s degree in counseling and a

desire to work in the field. The Army sent him to the 38th Artillery Brigade Headquarters in Osan. As part of the 38th Artillery Brigade, Niekamp worked in the brigade’s career counseling office as an administrative specialist. Administrative specialists supervise the performance of administrative functions, review and edit correspondence prior to release, and help plan and organize office operations. Niekamp remained with the 38th Artillery Brigade until he returned to the United States in April and received an honorable discharge. During his service, Niekamp received the National Defense Service and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals. He also received a certificate of achievement from the 38th Artillery Brigade. After leaving the Army, Niekamp worked for the California state government. In 1985, he became a deacon at

the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and ministered in three different local parishes. After retiring from public service in 2003, Niekamp became active in local organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Veterans Stand Down and Food for the Poor. He currently resides in Citrus Heights, California, with his wife, Norma. Thank you for your service!

Army Veteran Nicholas H. Doiron served in Vietnam and as a U.S. advisor to the Iranian army.

Nicholas “Nick” H. Doiron graduated from Norwich University in 1955. He commissioned as a second lieutenant with the Army Signal Corps. Doiron went to Fort Monmouth in New Jersey during the fall of the same year. He trained as his unit’s communication officer. Doiron attended his primary flight training in Texas and graduated as an Army aviator from Fort Rucker in Alabama. He taught at Fort Rucker as a flight instructor for the next three years. His second tour in 1960 led him to Iran as an aviator with the Military Assistance Advisory Group, or MAAG.

In 1965 Doiron returned to Fort Rucker to take part in helicopter transition training to report for an assignment with NATO in France. Later that year, he promoted to a major as the maintenance officer going to Vietnam with the D Troop of Third squadron, Fourth Calvary. After his time in Vietnam, Doiron returned to Fort Rucker to join the Aviation Test Board. His role was to write test plans then perform flight tests. He also helped test new ground-based navigation systems for use in Vietnam. He also served at the Pentagon as an action officer for the office of the Army’s chief signal officer. This led to a special project for Doiron to work with the assistant chief of staff for the next year and half.

Now a lieutenant colonel, Doiron transferred in 1971 as the Army aviation advisor to the Imperial Iranian army. He aided the Shah to modernize their army. He promoted to colonel in 1977 and transferred to the Army Depot in Sacramento, California, as the new maintenance director. However, this position was brief, as he was requested to lead the Television and Audio Support Activity unit with the Commanding General of the Army Communication Command.

Between 1980 and 1983, Doiron was the commander of a regional signal support regiment for the NATO Allied Forces southern region in Naples, Italy. In his last two years, he was the deputy program manager working with the Saudi Arabia National Guard developing a modern military force. During his career, Doiron received a Defense Superior Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, six Air Medals and an Air Medal with a “V” for valor.

After Doiron retired from the Army in 1985, he took a small break from working but decided to return three years later to help his local community. He worked as a division chief for the Department of General Services and later the purchasing chief for the county of Sacramento, California. Doiron retired again in 1998.

He continues to serve after retirement as a member of the Kings of Columbus branch 4970, which he has been a part of since 1955. Doiron was also a two-time president of the North Sacramento Rotary Club. He remains an active member in both organizations. Thank you for your service!
