REAL NEWS Joe Romanazzi- Grand Knight We hear a lot about “fake news” these days. Fake news is a term used to describe fabricated content that is widely disseminated to fool people. It can also be used to describe news that is not made-up but used to throw cold water on news reports that are contrary to what others want us to believe. Thomas Jefferson once remarked, “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.” He was aware of the influence of the press then and most likely read and heard his share of what is called “fake news” now. In President Jefferson’s time, it was misinformation and plain lies spread by newspapers and by word of mouth. I doubt he could ever in his wildest dreams imagine what life would be like for us today two centuries later with 24-hour TV and radio news cycles, computers, internet, Facebook, and Twitter, etc. Lucky for us, we know that the Jesus we serve is REAL NEWS. He is the same today, as He was yesterday as He will be tomorrow. As Catholic gentlemen, we know this as fact because of the teachings of the Church He founded and the scriptures. Our own life experiences and beliefs, especially those nurtured as Brothers in the Knights of Columbus also support this view. Happy the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down; He sees all mankind. From His fixed throne He beholds all who dwell on earth, He who fashioned the heart of each, He who knows all their works. (Psalm 33:12-15) When the Lord looks down from His throne and sees the good works of our council, He has to have a twinkle in His eyes when He says to Himself, “Look how much good these upright men are doing on my behalf. They are sowing bountifully and reaping bountifully love, joy, and peace in My name." Thank God, brothers, that we can always rely on the Council’s award-winning Paladin newsletter and our Worthy Editor Peter Mendenhall to deliver to us the finest in “Real News”. FAKE NEWS VS. REAL NEWS

Joe Romanazzi- Grand Knight We hear a lot about “fake news” these days. Fake news is a term used to describe fabricated content that is widely disseminated to fool people. It can also be used to describe news that is not made-up but used to throw cold water on news reports that are contrary to what others want us to believe. Thomas Jefferson once remarked, “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.” He was aware of the influence of the press then and most likely read and heard his share of what is called “fake news” now. ‘TWAS THE AFTERNOON BEFORE CHRISTMAS Joe Romanazzi, Grand Knight

‘Twas the afternoon before Christmas and all through the lot, parishioners at Our Lady of the Assumption were looking nervously to park. When to their amazement seven knights

in “rein geer” appeared to ease them to safety and to give them good cheer.

In wet, cold, and windy weather on the afternoon of December 24th, seven of our Brother Knights left the comfort of their warm homes to volunteer for the annual

tradition of directing traffic in the parking lot for the 4:00 PM Christmas Eve Mass at OLA. This is the church’s largest mass of the calendar year, according to PGK Michael Langer. Brother Langer said that Father Brendon came up with the idea of having our Council help out when he became pastor in 2005, and our Chaplain and current pastor Father Eduino has been

happy to see it continue. Peter Kilkenny, Patrick Topor, Mark Miller, Bill Simpson, and Dale Straford donned their winter garb and safety vests to be part of this year’s parking lot patrol. Conditions outside were lousy but we know Fr. Eduino and Mass attendees appreciated the Knights being there to make things go smoother for everyone else. Thank-you Brothers for the gift of your time to show support for the parish on this important day.

KNIGHTS AND LADY KNIGHTS PROVIDE HELPING HANDS FOR HART

HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Team) is a coalition of faith communities, non-profits, businesses, agencies, and residents that are committed to finding solutions to homelessness in local communities. Our OLA Faith in Action Parish Liaison Michael Dougherty, accepted an invitation extended by Juan Yniguez, Chair of the OLA Pastoral Council, to have Knights partner with parishioners from OLA to help staff their assigned nights for the Carmichael HART Homeless Sanctuary. Each of the nine churches participating in the event were given nights to host from December 30 - March 3. OLA was given a night at each of three churches-- St. John the Evangelist Church, American River Community Church, and Crossroads Church. Five Brothers: Don Cotton, Michael Dougherty, Kevin Holeman, John Bartel, and Joe Romanazzi, along with three Lady Knights: Joan Cotton, Jeannie Gobbo, and Joanne Hancock volunteered at the three sites for the various shifts available. Council volunteers prepared and served meals, provided hospitality, cleaned up, and maintained evening and night watches while guests slept. This structure allowed guests to go to bed following a nutritious dinner and to enjoy a restful night’s sleep inside a warm building instead of huddled in doorways, under bushes, or covered by tarps outside in our cold winter temperatures. There but for the grace of God go I.

DECEMBER 2018 FAMILY OF THE MONTH Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities

Congratulations to the Kenneth and Glenda Macdonald Family, Arden-Carmichael Council's December 2018 Family of the Month. Ken and Glenda are very active in St. John the Evangelist Parish, 4970 Council events, as well as other community activities. Ken has served in various liturgical ministries, being a commentator, lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He also was chairman of the Pastoral Council, and recently co-chaired the very successful Parish Debt Elimination Drive. Most recently he oversaw the renovation of the interior of St. John’s Church. Ken and Glenda served on the Adult Education Planning Committee at SJE and Glenda is a member of the Fellowship of Catholic Christian Women as well as a member of SJE’s Health Ministry. They are also members of a family bible study group that has been active for over 30 years.

In the community, Ken has volunteered his services at Juvenile Hall, and Ken and Glenda have been very active in pro-life activities. They have been supportive of the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home for unwed mothers and have helped to raise funds for needed equipment for the home, bringing Christmas gifts to the mothers and babies, and taking part in the annual holiday party. Ken became a member of the Knights and Council 4970 on October 21, 2003, and on April 2, 2005 he received his fourth Degree and became a member of Christ the King Assembly. He has held several council offices, including Worthy Deputy Grand Knight, and as a Worthy Trustee. He has assisted at numerous functions including many pancake breakfasts; luncheons for 2nd/3rd Degree Exemplifications; and participation in the annual drive to raise funds for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, where for a number of years he served as a store captain. For many years, he has volunteered at the council's fireworks booth. For the past thirteen years Ken has organized and hosted the annual Memorial Mass for deceased Knights and Glenda co-hosted the luncheon for the widows of our fallen Knights. He has served his assembly by his involvement in the festivals and dinners at Christ the King Retreat Center and is currently the Chief Administrative Officer for the center.

Ken and Glenda met while he was stationed at Travis AFB and have now been married for fifty years. Ken retired as a Regional Sales Manager for Abbot Laboratories, and Glenda retired as a registered nurse. They have two children: son, Travis, is married. He and his wife are in law enforcement; they have of two children. Their daughter, Marissa, also married, is an ICU nurse. ARDEN-CARMICHAEL COUNCIL’S RSVP RECIPIENT FOR 2018

PGK Peter treated Deacon Dean to a great lunch as witnessed by the empty dishes on the table, including what once appears to have been a beautiful hot fudge sundae. PGK Peter said the two had a great visit and Deacon Dean was very happy to receive the RSVP money. Council 4970 is proud to sponsor Deacon Dean in this his final year as a Seminarian at Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon. We enjoyed having him participate in our Council functions during his Pastoral Year in 2016-17 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. If all goes as planned, Deacon Dean will become Father Dean Marshall when he is ordained in early June 2019. Congratulations and best wishes to our RSVP recipient for 2018 from all the Brothers of Council 4970.

Man has the ability to appreciate the beauty of nature and, through the eyes of faith, he grasps a finite view of God by the signature of His creation.

THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE

We measure things to control them. Some believe that people can measure everything in the world and describe it in terms of numbers and proportions. This has had an enormous influence on modern mathematics and science. One of the first measure methods is a

numerical sequence adding 1 to the last number (1, 2, 3, 4…). Leonardo Pisano Bigollo introduced the Arabic-Hindu number system which included a sequence of numbers that are known today as “Fibonacci Sequence.” The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,..). The second number is found by adding the two numbers before it. The 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1). Similarly, the 3 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+2), the 5 is (2+3) the 8 (5+3) the 13 (8+5) and so on. Notice (on the above model) the incremental space increase with the numerical increase. This amazing sequence supports the order and design proofs of Saint Thomas, but no one can really explain why they are echoed so clearly in the world of math and science and in art and nature. The Fibonacci Sequence in nature is found in trees and flowers growing in a spiraling patterns as new petals/leaves are formed, in animals such as snails and human proportions, in natural phenomena such as spiraling storms or even cosmological galaxies.

Fibonacci Sequence is part of the signature of God. It is as if He has left His initials as the signature of His creation. The beauty of the sequence is in the designs it creates as it spreads about the entire massive universe. It creates harmonious relationships we see as beauty in its structure. Jonathan Edwards says, “Beauty is what makes God God and exalts Him above all other beauty by his divine beauty. Not sovereignty, not wrath, not grace, not omniscience, not eternity, but beauty is what more than anything else defines God’s very divinity.” The progression of the Fibonacci Sequence can be seen throughout the universe and is expressed in the natural order of growth and physical patterns. Mathematicians and scientists only see numbers and proportions that they use to control and model the order. But it is men of faith and vision that see God’s handiworks extended in the order and design of the universe.

Epilogue – The Fibonacci Sequence brings beauty to the world which, is reflected in God’s creation. Through the eyes of faith, man has the ability to comprehend and appreciate the beauty of nature and, in turn, get a finite view of God by the signature of His creation.

CHARTER MEMBER BROTHER EDGAR DICKINSON PASSES

Joe Romanazzi, Grand Knight Former 4970 Brother Edgar “Ed” Dickinson, passed away in Eureka on December 14, 2018 at the age of 78. Brother Ed and his father were both Charter members of our Council when it was formed in 1960. Brother Ed transferred his membership to Eureka Council 1067 when he moved there with his wife years ago, so his name will not be familiar to many of our current members. Memorial services were held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on January 7, 2019, with about 25 people in attendance. Several Council 4970 Knights and Lady Knights joined Brother Ed’s family and friends at the memorial service to celebrate his life. These included Don and Joan Cotton, Peter Kilkenny, Joe Romanazzi, Gerald Marenich, and Michael and Shannon Langer. Our Chaplain, Fr. Eduino celebrated the Mass. Grand Knight Joe Romanazzi presented the family with a copy of our Charter and a pair of rosary beads blessed by our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop Lori. A 4th Degree Color Corp team and 4th Degree Chalice team added to the solemnity of the service. Sir Knights Peter Kilkenny and Michael Langer served as part of the Color Corp Team. The Council has requested a Mass be celebrated at OLA on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. for the repose of Ed’s soul. May Ed’s soul and the souls of all our departed Brothers rest in peace. Amen.

WALK FOR LIFE—SAN FRANCISCO

The effort to successfully communicate the true spirit, tenor, and magnificence of the WFL is a futile endeavor. You simply cannot express it; it must be experienced first-hand, up close, and with the heart. No amount of pictures or speaker synopses would suffice. The Walk is a total body and mind experience. You must come, and you will cry, you will cheer, and you will see right before your eye Christ in action. It is something! Each year the WFL gets younger. The number of teens and children was impressive. Each year the Walk draws in more Hispanics and Asians. This old white guy was definitely in the minority by a large margin. The number of counter-demonstrators has dwindled each year

in terms of number and voracity. We are winning the culture war on this issue. Each year, it seems, the Lord gives me a special kindness or a special contact to make. It never fails! This year, while I was sitting on my camping stool, a very old man with his daughter came and stood next to me. He was frail, and shaking. I offered my stool to him, and he accepted immediately. He said: “I’ve got Parkinson’s, and I can’t stand very well”. This was my task this year. We meet Christ so very often. Pictured above are the four council members who attended (John Mizerak, Jerry Butler, Ken Macdonald, and me). Also on the bus were Lady Knights Barb Di Regolo, Joanne Hancock, and Sandy Butler. We all stand as sentinels against immoral societal norms. Abortion is the worst of these norms, and it must be defeated. Whether you Walk, March, or Pray, stay strong and never give up!
