Bundle up: Shelter opens as temperatures plummet

With temperatures this week dipping into the low 30s, the Christian Service Center in Pa latka opened its shelter Tuesday for overnight stay for the first time this season.

Sheila McCoy, the center’s executive director, said she

expects the shelter, 2600 Peters St. in Palatka, to open again tonight.

“I’m understanding (tonight is) going to be as cold,” McCoy said. “Anybody can show up. It’s noth-ing elaborate, but it’s warm. Sometimes, people don’t have heat in their houses.”

The shelter opened 7 p.m. Tuesday, and if it is reopened today, it will begin taking in peo-ple at the same time.

According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday’s low temperature was 34 degrees, and tonight’s low temperature is fore-cast to be 33 degrees.

McCoy said such low tempera-tures pose a safety hazard to homeless people and people who have no way to heat their homes.

The C hr i s t i an S er v ice Center opened its shelter a few times during winter at the

beginning of the year. But with this being one of the first times temperatures this fall have gotten close to freezing, this is the first time leading into the upcoming winter the shelter will be open.

Although there have been cold fronts, McCoy said, there are only a few circumstances under which

Couple accused of running meth lab in West Putnam

An Interlachen man and a Hollister woman were arrested by Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office deputies early Tuesday

after authorities said a resident gave the sheriff ’s office a tip about a meth lab in Interlachen.

David Allen Cosgrove, 39, and Teresa Ann Owens, 59, were each charged with felony possession of a chemical to manu-facture a controlled substance, producing methamphetamine and traff icking amphetamines. Each was held on $60,000 bond at the Putnam County Jail.

Authorities said a resident approached the sheriff ’s office’s West District Office in Interlachen about 11:50 p.m. Monday and told deputies Cosgrove was planning to make methamphetamines at a 314 Union Ave. residence. The resident who approached deputies also lived at the resi-dence, authorities said.

Shortly after midnight, deputies arrived at the residence and found Cosgrove walk-ing outside of a shed shaking a bottle, according to the sheriff ’s office. Inside the shed, deputies found Owens with clear plastic tubing and other equipment used

to produce methamphetamine.Cosgrove and Owens were placed in custody while the

sheriff ’s office Meth Lab Response Unit responded to the resi-dence to collect and dispose of the liquid found in the bottle.

The search to replace Seventh Circuit Court Judge Clyde E. Wolfe will undergo an important step Thursday when 18 attorneys from various counties will interview with the Seventh Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission.

Wolfe died Oct. 31 from health complica-tions. Wolfe had not served on the bench in months, with Chief Judge Zambrano announcing Wolfe’s medical leave to Seventh Circuit and Putnam County judges Aug. 14.

Among the 18 attorneys scheduled to inter view at the St . Johns C ounty Courthouse Annex is longtime Putnam County attorney Garry Wood. Wood

served in the State Attorney’s Office in Putnam County as deputy division chief until 2002. Since then, Wood has operated a private practice in Palatka.

Groups hosting service project to clean cemetery

The St. Johns River State College chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges, in partnership with Keep Putnam Beautiful, will host a cemetery cleaning service project 8 a.m. – noon Saturday at St. Joseph Cemetery, 3001 Crill Ave.

Volunteers are needed to help beautify the cemetery by removing debris and cleaning headstones and grave markers.

All ages are welcome to participate. Tools and supplies will

be provided, but organizers are asked to bring weed eaters if available.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.

DAVIE2nd person dead in group of bicyclists hit by car

Police said a second bicyclist has died after a distracted driver crashed into a group of riders over the weekend.

Davie police Sgt. Mark Leone told news outlets Tuesday that 62-year-old Carlos Rodriguez died after undergoing surgery at a Fort Lauderdale hospital.

Police said 33-year-old driver Nicole Vanderweit struck a group of six bike riders Sunday morning. She told investigators she was distracted by something in the passenger compartment. She also said the sun was shining directly in her face.

Officials say 53-year-old Denise Marsh was declared dead shortly after the crash.

One other rider remained hospitalized Tuesday. Two oth-ers were treated and released. A teen was scraped up but not hospitalized.

The crash remains under investigation. Police say alcohol and speed weren’t a factor. No charges have been filed.

John W. “Jay” AllenJohn W. (Jay) Allen, 68, of

S at s u m a , d i e d s u d d e n l y Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, in Sarasota. Jay was born in B r a d e nt o n , F l o r i d a t o James John A l l e n a n d Sadie Dunsuck. He was a veter-an of the U.S. Army and a mem-ber of VFW, Post 4225.

Jay leaves his employer, Dooley and Mac and D&M Constructors, who were a great part of his life for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Satsuma; little girl, Abby; brother, Phil Allen; sister, Sandy ; two sisters-in-law, Rebecca (David) and Susan (Tom); and numerous nieces and nephews who have many memories to cherish of him. Jay will be greatly missed, and we have peace knowing he is at his new Heavenly Home.

100, of Palatka, passed away Fr iday, Nov. 23, 2018, at Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness.

Carlos had been a resident of Palatka for the past 20 years, coming from Philadelphia a n d w a s a n a t i v e o f S a l i n a s , Puerto Rico. He was a vet-eran of World War II, having served with t h e U . S . Army in the R h i n e l a n d c a m p a i g n . C ar l o s w a s aw ard e d t h e American Defense Service Medal with Clasp, American T h e a t e r S e r v i c e Me d a l , European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and seven Overseas Service Bars. He was an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was computer sav v y and enjoyed staying abreast of cur-rent technolog y. He a lso enjoyed dancing, writing dia-ries and photography. He loved the Lord and life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eduardo and Aurelia Ginorio Alvarado, and five brothers and sisters.

H e attended the University of Florida on a baseball schol-arship, where he graduated in 1977 with a degree in com-munications. He enjoyed work-ing, playing golf, fishing, boating and spending time with his fam-ily. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Eleanor Edwards Finney, and a sister, Sandra Finney Ward.

Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Barbara Allen Finney; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Katisha Marie Finney of Fort White, Jeni Finney Guidi and Brian of St. Augustine and Ashley Elizabeth Conkey and Joshua of St. Augustine; his father, William G. Jackson Corbett Jerolaman, 16, of Hawthorne, passed away Nov. 24, 2018. He was born in Gainesville on March 5, 2002.

Throughout Jackson’s life, he had a love for air boating, fishing and hunting. He loved water sports, football, soccer, basketball and being a diehard Gator fan.

Later in life, he loved riding four-wheelers and anything with a motor. He always really enjoyed working on all his toys with motors, at which he was very good. Once Jackson turned 16, he developed a love for real-ly loud and fast trucks.

Clyde D. Middleton Jr.

Clyde Downing Middleton Jr., 88, of Ocala, passed away Nov. 10 after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1930, in St. Augustine to Clyde D. Middleton Sr. and Laurie (Buck) Middleton.

Clyde, known to many people as “Brother,” grew up in Pomona Park and Palatka, and graduated in 1948 from Mellon (Putnam) High School in Palatka. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy, and after being honorably discharged, he enlisted in the Coast Guard, where he served from 1951 to 1 9 5 4 . H e became a real estate broker and worked in t h e f a m i l y business all his l i f e . In t he 1 9 6 0 s , h e developed sev-eral proper-ties in central Florida, such as Big Scrub Campsites, Hog Valley, Woods and Lakes, and many others

Blessed with good looks, charm and a penchant for story-telling, he made friends with and entertained all who crossed his path. He was happiest playing his guitar and singing his favor-ite songs. He still talked about his favorite rides from the 1960s, a Pontiac GTO, VW camper and amphibian car. He loved travel-ing around the United States in a motor home with the idea of panning for gold and finding the mother load.

Although single when he died, Clyde had two previous marr iages . He and Joyce ( S a m f o r d ) M i d d l e t o n (deceased) shared two daugh-ters, Cherie Wilson (Jim) and Sandra Burke, and one son, Wayne Middleton (Paula). Clyde and Linda Mobley (Don) shared one daughter, Laura Middleton (Micheal Owens).

He was predeceased by his parents, Clyde Sr. and Laurie Middleton, and brother James Middleton.

His surviving siblings are Barbara Harris and Harlow Middleton (Michell). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jack Samford (Sandra). Clyde’s grandchildren include Eric Delisle (Ginnie), Ryan Burke (Agatha), Tyler Burke, Evan Burke, Cory Burke, Wayne Paul Middleton (Sam), Stacy Harper (Dustin) and William Shea Middleton. Clyde’s great-grand-children include Ryan Jr. and Kealan Skerritt-Burke and Jackson, Charlotte and Benjamin Harper. Clyde also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, good friends and a young man, Stormy Sharon, whom he men-tored for 25 years.

Clyde was a very generous man, so in lieu of flowers, he would want you to give to a charity or help someone in need in his honor.

Palatka, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following a brief illness.

Toni was born in St. Augustine and grew up in Richmond, Va. She returned to Palatka 25 years ago, coming from Foley, Ala. Toni worked for the Putnam County Clerk of Courts for 22 years. She began her career as a court clerk in t h e C i v i l Division and developed her skills working i n v a r i o u s departments in the Clerk’s Office. Her last a s s i g n m e nt was the highly visible and critical role of administrative clerk sup-porting the Putnam County Board of Commissioners. Her pr i m ar y re sp ons i b i l i t i e s

in that capacity were to keep an accurate record of their meet-ings, make those records avail-able to the public and file the necessary records with govern-ing agencies in Tallahassee. She enjoyed cooking. Besides her work, she also enjoyed the out-doors, including going to the beach, kayaking and flower gar-dening. She also enjoyed taking care of her dog, Coco. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Lois Robertson; her paternal grandparents, Helen and J.C. Weaver; and her mater-nal grandfather, Hoyie Hague.

On Black Friday, I decided against shopping. Instead, I got up with the sun and made my way up

Bardin Road and turned down a sandy lane. I was hoping to check in on the Bardin Booger. I wanted to see how his holidays were going.

And, of course, I wanted to hear his sage words about the happenings in a midterm election year.

When I made contact with the esteemed Booger, he was sitting under a pine tree. He was counting pine needles. He motioned for me to be quiet.

“Eight million, one hundred ninety thou-sand and four. Eight million, one hundred ninety thousand and five,” the Booger said. “That’s it. I have completed the count in Florida’s U.S. Senate race. Rick Scott is the winner.”

I wished the Booger happy holidays and told him he didn’t need to count the votes; they already had been counted three times.

“I just wanted to make sure. Did you know that the count in the governor’s race was 30,556 higher?”

I explained to the Booger that his calcula-tions were posted on the website of the Florida Secretary of State. But he needed to remember Palm Beach County and Broward County didn’t get their recounts done on time, so their numbers were the numbers from the first count, not the second or the third count.

“Well, in Broward County alone, the dif-ference was 20,528. A lot was made of the ballot design in Broward. Some said that cost Sen. (Bill) Nelson votes, but Nelson only got 9,913 fewer votes than (Tallahassee Mayor Andrew) Gillum in that county. That’s not enough. Scott won the election by 10,033,” the Booger proclaimed and laughed as he added, “That’s Bush-Gore territory. By the way, Scott got 10,615 fewer votes than (U.S.

Rep. Ron) DeSantis is Broward.”I asked the Booger about the whole state.“Again, it doesn’t calculate. Both DeSantis

and Gillum got fewer votes statewide than Scott and Nelson, respectively. The gover-nor’s race overvote went to the six other can-didates on the ballot.”

So, I ventured that the Booger thought DeSantis and Scott won fair and square.

“Yes,” he said as he stroked his extra-long chin hair. “All this recount stuff is much ado about nothing as well. It was established after the recounts in 2000 as a way to determine what the state would do in a close election. It’s all just what Florida does. It leaves too much time for meaningless jawboning, but it actually is a very good thing.”

I asked the Booger what he found interest-ing in the election.

“In Florida, I thought it interesting that the Democrat won the agriculture commission-er’s race when the Republicans won the Senate and the governorship. In that race, 161,406 fewer votes were cast than for gover-nor. That’s a big gap. Not a lot of sizzle in who looks after the cows. In Bardin, howev-er, that’s important. Even so, the undervote in Putnam County was 329,” the Booger said, sucking in some cool air after his ramblings.

So, I asked the Booger what he made of the

antics of Palm Beach and Broward counties in counting and recounting.

“Well,” he said, “the machines need to be upgraded in Palm Beach. That seems to be the only big issue there. In Broward County, Ms. Brenda Snipes has resigned.” The Booger made the washing of the hands gesture.

I asked the Booger for one of his classic putdowns.

“OK. OK,” he said. “You know I live in the woods. That’s where people go snipe hunt-ing. It’s hard to nail one of those critters down. I don’t know of a successful hunt. You can’t count on a snipe or a Snipes.”

I asked the Booger what he thought about the national results.

“I hold out a bit of hope. No president other than Bill Clinton could have gotten welfare reform done. (President) Obama undid those rules in a recession, but that’s another story. I don’t think any combination of power other than (Nancy) Pelosi and (President) Donald Trump could solve our problems at the border.”

I told the Booger I needed more detail.“Well, Trump has our economy firing on

all cylinders. We need immigrant labor now, although I worry about the next recession. Recessions always come. Anyway, Pelosi will seize on the timing to take care of those already here and make it harder for others to come. Trump will cave, especially if Pelosi funds his danged wall.”

The Booger concluded, “If the gates close, Mexico will pay the price. Trump will be proved correct.”

It is such a pleasure to visit such an enthu-siastic Booger. The mist from his breath mixed with the early morning fog as he trot-ted his retreat through the bog.

Election reform, environment should

be top prioritiesELECTION REFORM

As campaign season began, this wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Following the close,

contentious, mistake-marred elections for U.S. Senate, governor and a state Cabinet seat, it should be. For example:■ Should top-of-the-ballot design become uni-

form statewide? There’s a question whether the outcome of a major state race tipped on a question-able design in Broward County. It’s now left up to elections offices in each of the 67 counties to design a blended statewide and local ballot.■ The state’s Republican and Democratic parties

are essentially evenly split in voter registration numbers. Growing is the percentage of voters, including younger generations, not registering with either party. That could mean more close elections and recounts. To help restore faith in Florida elec-tions, state and local leaders should ensure reliable equipment is in place, not aged counting machines that overheat.■ Can mail-ballot return become more vot-

er-friendly? Which counties counted only ballots received before the polls closed Nov. 6 and which accepted postmarked ones? Undecided voters who wait are better served by increasing the number of secure drop-off spots for ballots rather than adher-ing to the recommendation to mail at least a week before Election Day.■ Is Florida’s closed primary election system

effective? A contrived write-in candidate who clos-es a primary election to one party disenfranchises too many voters and unnecessarily lengthens the November ballot. An example is the Southwest Florida state attorney’s race that was essentially decided by Republicans in August. Unaffiliated vot-ers and Democrats were excluded from an import-ant decision.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONEnvironmental issues surfaced:■ Identifying ways to curtail red tide and toxic

algae was atop almost every candidate’s platform. All must be held accountable for campaign promis-es. The state has a uniform fertilizer law, but we’d suggest home rule is preferable to address runoff because all Florida communities don’t have the same exposure for waterways, lakes, bays and waterfront. Naples GOP state Sen. Kathleen Passidomo’s proposal to increase conversion of sep-tic tanks to sewer systems, now also a legislative priority of Collier commissioners, must be addressed.■ Sixty-nine percent of voters supported an

amendment against offshore drilling within Florida’s territorial waters. That should reinforce to Republican U.S. Sen.-elect Rick Scott, Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis, re-elected U.S. Reps. Francis Rooney and Mario Diaz-Balart, and state legislators to engage in a full press for a permanent ban of explo-ration in federal waters offshore Florida.■ Congress must maintain its recent momentum

to invest promised dollars in Everglades resto-ration.

Lion Air pilots struggled to maintain control of a Boeing jet as its automatic safety sys-tem repeatedly pushed the plane’s nose down, according to a draft of a preliminary report by Indonesian authorit ies investigating last month’s dead-ly crash.

The investigators are focusing on whether faulty information from sensors led the plane’s sys-tem to force the nose down. The n e w B o e i ng 7 3 7 M A X 8 plunged into the Java Sea on Oct. 29, killing all 189 people on board.

The New York Times report-ed that information from the Lion Air jet’s flight data record-er was included in a briefing for the Indonesian Parliament and reported by Indonesian media. Peter Lemme, an expert in avia-tion and satellite communica-tions and a former Boeing engi-neer, wrote an analysis of the data on his blog. The AP was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the report posted online.

Indonesian authorities are expected to issue the report Wednesday, although it is unclear whether they will offer a probable cause for the crash.

The MAX aircraft, the latest version of Boeing’s popular 737 jetliner, includes an automated system that pushes the nose down if a sensor detects that the nose is pointed so high that the plane could go into an aerody-namic stall.

Lemme described “a deadly game of tag” in which the plane pointed down, the pilots coun-tered by manually aiming the nose higher, only for the sequence to repeat about five

seconds later. That happened 26 times, but pilots failed to recog-nize what was happening and follow the known procedure for countering incorrect activation of the automated safety system, Lemme told the Associated Press.

Lemme said he was also trou-bled that there weren’t easy checks to see if sensor informa-tion was correct, that the crew of the fatal flight apparently wasn’t warned that similar problems had occurred on pre-vious flights, and that the Lion Air jet wasn’t fixed after those flights.

WASHINGTON — The breakdown of a plea deal with former Trump campaign chair-man Paul Manafort and an explosive British news report about alleged contacts he may have had with WikiLeaks

f o u n d e r J u l i a n A s s a n g e threw a new e lement of uncertainty i n t o t h e T r u m p -Russia inves-tigation on Tuesday.

A day after prosecutors accused Manafort of repeatedly lying to them, trashing his agreement to tell all in return for a lighter sen-tence, he adamantly denied a report in the Guardian that he had met secretly with Assange in March 2016. That’s the same month he joined the Trump campaign and that Russian hackers began an effort to pen-etrate the email accounts of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

The developments thrust Manafort back into the investi-gation spotlight, raising new questions about what he knows and what prosecutors say he might be attempting to conceal as they probe Russian election interference and any possible coordination with Trump asso-

ciates in the campaign that sent the celebrity businessman to the White House.

At the same time, other fig-ures entangled in the investiga-tion, including Trump himself, have been scrambling to esca-late attacks and allegations against prosecutors who have spent weeks working quietly behind the scenes.

Besides denying he’d ever met Assange, Manafort, who is currently in jail, said he’d told s p e c i a l c o u n s e l R o b e r t Mueller’s prosecutors the truth in weeks of questioning. And WikiLeaks said Manafort had never met with Assange, offer-ing to bet London’s Guardian newspaper “a million dollars and its editor’s head.”

Assange, whose organization published thousands of emails stolen from Clinton’s campaign in 2016, is in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London under a claim of asylum.

It is unclear what prosecu-tors contend Manafort lied about, though they’re expected to make a public filing ahead of sentencing that could offer answers.

Dissolution of the plea deal could be a devastating out-come for a defendant who suddenly admitted guilt last September after months of maintaining his innocence and who bet on his coopera-tion getting him a shorter sentence. But it’s also a poten-tially major setback for inves-tigators given that Manafort steered the campaign during a

vital stretch of 2016, includ-ing a time when prosecutors say Russian intelligence was working to sway the election in Trump’s favor.

The prosecutors’ terse three-page filing underscored their exasperat ion not only at Manafort’s alleged deception but also at the loss of an import-ant witness present for key moments under investigation, including a Trump Tower meeting at which Trump’s old-est son expected to receive “dirt” about Democrat Hillary Clinton from a Kremlin-connected lawyer.

“The fact is, they wanted his cooperation. They wanted him to truthfully reveal what he knew, so they’re not getting w hat t he y wante d ,” s a id Washington defense lawyer Peter Zeidenberg. “This isn’t like a good development where they’re clapping their hands and saying, ‘Now we get to crush this guy.’”

Manafort’s motivation, if indeed he lied to Mueller’s team, also was unclear.

Tr u mp a t t o r n e y Ru d y Giuliani said in a telephone interview that Trump and his

lawyers agree a presidential pardon should not be consid-ered “now.”

However, he added, “The president could consider it at a n a p p r o p r i a t e t i m e a s Manafort has the same rights as any American.”

The Monday night revelation of the Muel ler f i l ing on Manafort came at a delicate time for investigators, who have gone months without any new charges and continue to probe possible links between Tr u m p a s s o c i a t e s a n d WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy website that released tens of thousands of Democratic emails stolen by Russian spies during the 2016 campaign.

As Trump continues raging against the investigation — he tweeted Tuesday that Mueller was doing “TREMENDOUS damage to our Criminal Justice system” and called the investi-gation “a total disgrace” — oth-ers in the crosshairs have filled the vacuum of Mueller’s recent silence by publicly declaring their innocence, accusing pros-ecutors of coercing testimony or tempting fate by turning aside negotiations.

back more than a decade. Wood knew Wolfe from his lawyer days, and Wood made his fair share of arguments in Wolfe’s courts as a lawyer.

“It would be quite the honor. I’ve known Judge Wolfe before he even became a judge, when he was in private practice,” Wood said. “He was a great attorney, a great judge. He was very dedicated to what he did, so it would be quite the honor to potentially take his place.”

Wood said his experience with Wolfe “definitely” showed him the traits necessary to be a successful judge. He said Wolfe consistently showed what it takes to be a judge and how to truly hear both sides of an argu-ment.

“He was always a very good listener to both sides. He made sure that both sides had an equal opportunity to express their opinions, present any evi-dence they want, calling wit-nesses,” Wood said. “He was very good about doing his own

legal research on issues litigated in front of him.”

I n t h e d a y s f o l l o w i n g Thursday’s interviews, the com-mission will narrow down the list of candidates to six names and send the list of names to the governor’s office. The governor will then ultimately appoint a judge.

This is not the first time Wood has gone through the interview process to replace a judge. He was one of six candi-dates suggested to replace cir-cuit judge Scott C. DuPont before Christopher Ferebee was named as DuPont’s replacement on Nov. 17.

Wood said he is excited to once again be considered to fill a judge’s seat, but he knows it will be no easy task due to the stiff competition he faces from the other 17 attorneys.

“I am excited. I know from my review there are several qualified, very experienced law-yers who will be presenting their own cases as to why they should be considered for the position,” he said. “I know they will have a tough time narrow-ing it down to a number of can-didates. It will be a very difficult consideration.”

If there is a threat of flood-ing, “near-freezing tempera-tures” or other hazardous weather events, the center emails Lachnicht to get approv-al to open the shelter, McCoy said.

She said the partnerships between the city, its police department and the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office have

been phenomenal. Many people and groups

throughout the county want to keep people safe, which is great because the center couldn’t do it alone.

“The sheriff ’s office knows (the shelter is opening),” McCoy said. “The Palatka Police Department knows. If they find (homeless people)

out, they’ll bring them to us. Right now, it’s word of mouth. The community response has been great.”

The shelter can accommo-date up to 20 people, but at the center’s current location, only up to seven people have been sheltered at once.

HOUSTON — President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday said it would appeal a judge’s order barring it from enforcing a ban on asylum for any immigrants who illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border, after the president’s attack on the judge prompted an extraor-dinary rebuke from the nation’s chief justice.

The Justice Department filed a notice Tuesday saying it will appeal the order to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. It also asked the judge to stay his order pending the appeal.

Trump criticized the 9th Circuit last week as biased and dismissed the judge who ruled against him — an appointee of Trump’s predecessor — as an

responded with a statement that the federal judiciary doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” It was the first time Roberts has hinted at any criti-cism of the president, as judges ordinarily avoid making any public statements on politics.

Roberts and the rest of the Supreme Court may end up deciding the asylum case. The 9th Circuit, seen as liberal lean-ing, has already ruled against Trump in several major immi-gration cases.

U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order Nov. 19 against Trump’s Nov. 9 proclamation that automatical-ly barred anyone who crossed t h e U. S . - Me x i c o b o r d e r

between official ports of entry from seeking asylum .

Trump issued the proclama-tion in response to the caravans of migrants approaching the border that he’s claimed are a national security threat.

But Tigar sided with legal groups who sued hours after the proclamation was issued. The groups argued that federal law unambiguously says immi-grants in the United States can request asylum regardless of whether they entered the coun-try lawfully.

“Whatever the scope of the President’s authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbid-den,” the judge said in his order.

In its request for a stay Tuesday, the Justice Department said Tigar’s order “immediately

harms the government and jeopardizes important national interests.”

Lee Gelernt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement that the group would “vigorously oppose the stay request, so that people’s lives are not put in danger.”

In issuing the proclamation, Trump invoked the same nation-al security powers that he used to impose a travel ban on citizens of countries with overwhelmingly Muslim populations.

The 9th Circuit ruled the administration couldn’t with-hold money from so-called “sanctuary cities,” end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program for younger immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents or impose the travel ban.

In the case of the travel ban,

the Supreme Court ultimately reversed the 9th Circuit’s deci-sion when it ruled that Trump had the authority to impose it.

Asylum is intended for peo-ple who have fled their coun-tries of origin because they have suffered persecution or fear that they will be persecuted if they are forced to return.

Crossing the U.S.-Mexico border between ports of entry is a federal crime, but that does not typically preclude someone from requesting asylum. Tigar noted that federal law says someone may seek asylum if they have arrived in the United States, “whether or not at a des-ignated port of arrival.”

Department of Homeland Security, around 70,000 people a year claim asylum after cross-ing illegally. DHS alleges that many of those people make false claims and take advantage of loopholes in the system.

Meanwhile, at least 3,000 people have arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, across the border from San Diego, California, with hopes of requesting asylum at a port of entry there. DHS has said it’s prepared for as many as 10,000 or more people to arrive in various caravans.

U.S. agents on Sunday fired tear gas at hundreds of migrants after some of them tried to get through the fence separating the two countries.

M O N T P E L I E R , Vt . — People may need to trim back their Christmas tree expecta-tions this year.

A tight supply means some shoppers will be paying more and searching longer for that perfect Christmas tree this holi-day season. But there’s no need for panic buying on Black Friday as industry experts say consumers will end up with something to decorate this holi-day season.

The yuletide market imbal-ance was created a decade ago when a glut of Christmas trees and the Great Recession com-bined to drive many growers out of business. Now the supply is tight and it takes eight to 10 years — the time needed to grow a Christmas tree — to boost the supply.

“It’s bad. It’s the worst I’ve seen in a long time,” said Matthew LaCasce, co-owner of the Finestkind Christmas tree

farm in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. The farm sells about 10,000 trees each season and is turning down orders every day from desperate retailers, LaCasce said.

Larger retailers are doing just fine, officials say. It’s the smaller charitable organizations, school groups, and mom-and-pop operators that have had to scramble for trees.

In Hawaii, Christmas tree seller Richard Tajiri said he ended up 1,000 trees short this season.

“It’s going to be tough for everybody. There’s nothing you can do about it,” said Tajiri, who is fielding several dozen calls a day in Honolulu. “It’s first come, first served.”

Lovell’s Florist and Nursery in Medfield, Massachusetts, resorted to a hodgepodge of suppliers from Canada, North Carolina and the West Coast because the regular wholesaler couldn’t deliver, owner LaVerne Lovell said. They were expect-ing their final 1,000 trees to be

delivered Friday.“It was about two days of

complete panic,” she recalled. “The Christmas season carries us through the winter. If we don’t have any trees, it would’ve been a real nightmare.”

The American Legion in Dover, Massachusetts, also had to search high and low for 450 trees for its annual fundraiser. “It’s getting tough,” said Tom McGill, who oversees the effort.

Supply and demand prob-lems are nothing new. Like other crops, Christmas trees are a commodity that goes through cycles from too few trees to an oversupply.

But regional factors are also exacerbating the problem.

For example, a spring frost damaged trees at some farms in Canada’s Nova Scotia, choking o f f s o m e s u p p l y i n t h e Northeast. Some Canadian farms in New Brunswick are buried under snow from recent storms, making it difficult for them to get trees onto trucks for shipment.

A shortage of Fraser trees, the most popular on the East Coast, had some North Carolina buy-ers scrambling to find balsam firs in New England.

In Oregon, some people are taking Fraser fir trees from the East instead of noble firs that are the most popular tree on the West Coast.

“Supply and demand seem to always be in some flux,” Chal Landgren, a Christmas tree spe-cialist and professor at Oregon State University, said via email.

All told, U.S. consumers are expected to buy about 27 mil-lion trees, roughly the same as the last two years, according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

Most people will find what they want, but prices could be a bit higher than last year’s aver-age retail price of about $75, said Tim O’Connor, the associa-tion’s director.

With the lean supply, shop-pers might want to start early if they want a lot of choice and variety.

People crave meaningful work and a sense of purpose. In fact, meaning and purpose are sometimes more important to many people than making a lot of money.

This trend is good for business. It’s no secret

that employees who feel a strong sense of meaning and purpose do better work. They’re more creative, productive, and loyal. Helping employees connect to this solves the number-one problem on a leader’s dashboard: engagement.

Companies that figure this out have a distinct

competitive advantage. Top talent is drawn to organizations that provide meaningful work and places where they feel they can make a difference.

Of course, some jobs are, by their very nature,

more meaningful than others. But really, all jobs are potentially meaningful. All companies serve their customers, their stakeholders, and their workforce, and the employees are in a unique position to make a real difference. It’s up to leaders to help people see this. Great leaders create an environment where employees feel valued, and this is what keeps them connected to their sense of purpose.

I read an article in Harvard Business Review

that builds a good case for why a company should create a sense of meaning for its team.

You may want to read the HBR article

yourself. But I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts and observations on these traits and their connection to creating a meaningful work environment:

On values- and culture-based hiring…

For employees to feel their work is meaningful, they need to fit in with the rest of the team. Collaboration connects you to others. If the values and culture are a poor fit for an employee, they won’t work as well on teams. This is why it’s crucial that leaders know how to hire the right people.

There are two big components to good hiring.

One is behavioral-based interviewing, which you can read more about in the linked article. The other is peer interviewing, which essentially means engaging coworkers who will work closely

with the new hire in the interview process.

On curiosity…

Curious leaders are interested in people and finding new ways to do things. They believe their employees know more—usually far more—about their area of expertise than they (the leaders) do. They want to know how their employees think, how they would make the company better, how they envision the future. It creates an environment of constant learning, which is good for the company and fulfilling for the employee.

On relentless challenging… Great leaders

never stop pushing employees to improve. They hold the bar high and expect others to do the same. I find this type of leader usually prefers an objective, metrics-based style of performance management. They are crystal clear on what success looks like and they link pay to performance. That means employees either meet their goals (which are tied to the organization’s overall goals and mission), or they don’t. There is very little gray area.

On ability to trust… Leaders have to trust

their employees to do the job they’ve been hired to do. And yet, it can be challenging for many to delegate and let go. The problem is that when you consistently “overmanage” employees, they stop thinking for themselves. They’ll never find their wings and fly on their own. Instead of solving their own problems, they’ll constantly be looking for you to lead them out of the wilderness.

Some leaders naturally practice these four

behaviors. Others need to work at them. The good news is that when you have the will to improve as a leader, you’ll eventually find the skill.

We can all help our employees find their sense

of meaning and purpose. When we do, not only will our company’s performance improve, but everyone will enjoy their job so much more.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A video released by the U.S. Forest Service shows how a gender reveal event led to a costly wildfire in southern Arizona that forced about 200 people out of their homes.

The information gleaned from the video isn’t new, but it’s the first public visual of how quickly the tall, dry grass on state land near Green Valley went up in flames after an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent fired a rifle at a home-made target.

The rectangular target with a diamond checkered design marked with “boy” or “girl” explodes, sending a blue sub-stance in to the air.

A person whose identity was blacked out in the 49-second video moves toward the flames after a few seconds as embers and debris rise above the mes-quite and acacia trees then backs up, and another uniden-tified person moves across the screen from right to left.

The Arizona Daily Star first repor ted on the v ideo it obtained Monday through a public records request, and it was shared widely on social media. The Associated Press received the video from the Forest Service on Tuesday.

Agent Dennis Dickey told authorities he constructed the target with a substance known as Tannerite that detonates when hit by a bullet from a high-velocity firearm, accord-ing to court documents. He reported the fire immediately to law enforcement on April 23, 2017, and was cooperative in the Forest Service investigation, authorities said.

The U.S . Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that Dickey still is employed with the agency’s Tucson sector.

The fire burned about 73 square miles (190 square kilo-meters) of mostly state and Forest Service land over less than two weeks, forcing evacu-ations and putting others on alert they might also need to leave their homes. The damage

to state, federal and private land, and firefighting costs topped $8 million.

Dickey pleaded guilty in September to a federal misde-meanor charge of starting a fire without a permit. He was sen-tenced the following month to five years of probation. He also was ordered to make an initial payment of $100,000 in restitu-tion and monthly payments of $500.

The gender reveal was for Dickey’s pregnant wife, the Arizona Daily Star reported. He has said the fire was a “com-plete accident.

“I feel absolutely horrible about it,” the newspaper quoted Dickey as saying the day he pleaded guilty in the case. “It was probably one of the worst days of my life.”

Exploding targets are pro-hibited on the Coronado National Forest, and recre-ational target shooting isn’t allowed on state land where the fire started, officials said.

Land management agencies have seen wildfires spark from lightning, abandoned camp-fires, chain saws, a horse clip-

ping its shoe on a rock, tow chains dragging along the road, cigarette butts and welding out-side on a windy day.

A L E X A N DR IA , Va . — Prosecutors acknowledged to a judge on Tuesday that they erred when they mistakenly refer-enced criminal charges against Wiki leaks founder Julian Assange in an unrelated case, but they insisted the need for secrecy in the case still remains.

A federal judge heard argu-ments on a request by a free-press group to unseal criminal charges against Assange. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press argued that the inadvertent disclosure by prosecutors about charges against Assange obliterates the usual need for secrecy.

Brinkema asked pointed ques-tions of both sides and took the issue under advisement.

Typically, criminal charges remain under seal until a defen-dant has been arrested to pre-vent a target from fleeing arrest or destroying evidence ahead of prosecution.

In this case, the free-press advocates pointed out that Assange has been holed up since 2012 under a grant of asy-lum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for fear of prosecu-tion in the U.S. Now that any doubt about those charges has been removed, there no longer exists a reason to keep the charges against him secret, law-yer Katie Townsend argued.

But prosecutor Gordon Kromberg said no precedent

exists for a judge to require dis-closure of criminal charges before a defendant’s arrest. He acknowledged the error in which court papers in an unre-lated case say that Assange “has been charged,” but he said the mistake is not confirmation that Assange is actually charged.

The Associated Press and other outlets have reported that Assange is indeed facing unspecified charges under seal, but Kromberg said there is a significant difference between reporting based on anonymous sources and speculation versus official confirmation backed by the release of court documents. He said court precedent also recognizes the distinction between the two.

Brinkema, though, also questioned government law-yers closely on why there would be a need to keep charges under seal when there has been an inadvertent disclosure.

While Assange remains pro-tected in the Ecuadorian embas-sy, there have been indications that officials in that country are losing patience with him: They recently placed restrictions on his use of the embassy, including a requirement that he clean up after his cat.

BETHESDA, Md. — A mass notification error led to reports of an active shooter Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Me d i c a l C e n t e r o u t s i d e Washington, the U.S. Navy said.

In a statement, the Navy said that the Naval Support Activity Bethesda notification system was inadvertently activated while preparing for an upcom-ing drill, without the words “exercise” or “drill.” People who saw the notification contacted security at the Maryland base, which launched an active shoot-er response.

NSA Bethesda spokesman Jeremy Brooks said the incident “was an accident. It was not something that was planned.”

NSA Bethesda tweeted at 2:15 p.m. that an active shooter had been reported in the base-ment of a building. The all clear came about an hour later, after security found “no indication” of an active shooter, according to NSA Bethesda.

After the all clear, the U.S. Navy tweeted that an “ad hoc drill” had been conducted at the base, but Brooks said there was no drill.

“It was a genuine false alarm and not intended to cause any harm,” Brooks said.

“Toni was always there with information and anything I needed to do my job,” said Commissioner Larry Harvey. “I will miss Toni; I will miss her straightforwardness. You didn’t have to beat around the bush with how she felt. She’d let you know, and she was honest.”

Commission Chairman Bill Pickens, who has worked with

Weaver in the two years he’s been in office, added, “She always had that smiling face. We want to keep Toni Weaver’s family in our prayers and thoughts as we move forward.”

Smith said his last interac-tion with her during last week’s swear-in ceremony, when she admitted feeling sick. She was only recently diagnosed with cancer, he said.

“The clerk’s office is sad that we lost one of our shining stars, and we’ll work hard to remem-ber her and carry on her tradi-tion of good public service,” Smith said.

W A S H I N G T O N — President Donald Trump cast into doubt a key component of his upcoming trip to an inter-national summit in Argentina as he suggested Tuesday he may cancel his planned sit-down w i t h Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin over Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian naval ships last weekend.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Trump said he would be receiving a “full report” from his national secu-rity team on Russia’s recent actions in eastern Ukraine and the Black Sea. He said he would decide on a course afterward.

“Maybe I won’t have the meeting,” he said. “Maybe I won’t even have the meeting.”

Trump added: “I don’t like that aggression. I don’t want that aggression at all.”

The comments were Trump’s strongest to date in condemna-tion of Russia’s recent actions in Ukraine, where tensions are flar-

ing. But White House aides were still planning for the Putin meet-ing after Trump’s comments.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is set to be just one of several high-profile foreign policy engagements for the U.S. leader on the whirlwind two-day visit to Argentina. Trump is also set meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping over din-ner this weekend, in what may be a pivotal session to deter-mining if and how the ongoing trade dispute between their two countries could be resolved.

The Trump-Xi meeting would be the first since the two countries began hitting each other with import taxes earlier this year. The United States tar-geted $250 billion in Chinese products, and Beijing lashed back by slapping tariffs on $110 billion worth of U.S. goods.

It said warming-charged extremes “have already become more frequent, intense, wide-spread or of long duration.” The report noted the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015.

“The potential for losses in some sectors could reach hun-dreds of billions of dollars per year by the end of this century,” the report said. It added that if emissions of heat-trapping gases continue at current levels, labor costs in outdoor indus-tries during heat waves could cost $155 billion in lost wages per year by 2090.

The president said he read some of the report “and it’s fine” but not the part about the dev-astating economic impact.

“I don’t believe it,” Trump said, adding that if “every other place on Earth is dirty, that’s not so good.”

Nearly every country in the world in 2015 pledged to reduce or slow the growth of carbon dioxide emissions, the chief greenhouse gas.

“We’re already there,” said Wesleyan University economist Gary Yohe, who was a reviewer of the national report, which was produced by 13 federal agencies and outside scientists. “Climate change is making a noticeable impact on our econ-omy r i g ht n ow : Har ve y, Florence, Michael, Maria.”

Yohe said, “It is devastating at particular locations, but for the entire country? No.”

Economist Ray Kopp, a vice president at the think tank Resources For the Future and who wasn’t part of the assess-ment, said the economics and the science in the report were absolutely credible.

“I believe this is going to be a devastating loss without any other action-taking place,” Kopp said Monday. “This is cer-tainly something you would want to avoid.”

Dear Harriette: I have a col-league who seems to spend a great deal of time goofing off. He’s always spreading gossip, and I’m pretty sure the rest of the team doesn’t care much for him.

Every month we post a list of birthdays in the office kitch-en area; it was his birthday last month, and his name was not on the list. This dude was so upset about it that he found a Sharpie and wrote his name on the list. I found this to be tacky, but I ignored it. However, I don’t know how much longer I can ignore his bad behavior. Just last week as I was using the restroom, he came in looking for me. He called out my name and knocked on the stall I was in. This wasn’t the first time he’s done this. He also has a habit of texting me while I’m at work on his days off just to see what’s going on in the office. He also texts me on my days off, which I really don’t appreciate.

Last Friday we all went out for happy hour, and he was there. He left early, which was great; how-ever, he left without paying his

bar tab. A couple of weeks ago, he was going on and on because we went out without him, and he finally gets invited out again just to stick us with his bill. I’m to the point where I feel the need to talk to our manager about this guy, except I feel he might lose his job because of all the mistakes he’s made at work.

In the over-the-shoulder style of bridge literature, the author describes his thoughts as he plays through a deal. The danger is that the writer will be constantly pat-ting himself on the back for his great plays and defenses.

Frank Stewart in “Play Bridge With Me” (Baron Barclay) pulls it off because his deals are instructive.

In today’s deal, how should South play in four hearts? West leads the diamond 10. East wins with his ace and returns a dia-mond to dummy’s queen.

Stewart (South) began with one heart because he did not want to face the rebid if he opened one club, and partner responded one spade. (One no-trump would have been a big underbid, two hearts a bit of an overbid.) North then had an awkward response, unsure what his minor-suit queens were worth. He compromised by bidding one spade, then show-ing game-invitational values in

hearts, which implied only three-card support.

South could afford one trump loser, not two. That would usu-ally have involved playing East for the ace. Declarer was just about to plunge forward when he realized that, since he had two club entries on the board, he could afford to make a discovery play first. At trick three, he led the spade king. When East won with the ace, West was marked with the heart ace — why?

East passed as dealer, but was known to have started with the spade ace and diamond ace-jack. Now the only chance was to find East with the heart 10 and jack by running the heart eight from the board.

klahoma was No. 5 in the pivotal second-to-last College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, ahead of Ohio State head-

ing into championship weekend when the final four will be set.

The biggest question facing the selec-tion committee this week was how much to value Ohio State’s 62-39 blowout of Michigan on Saturday. The answer: The Buckeyes moved up four spots but were still stuck behind the Sooners.

“I really don’t have a measurement for closeness,” selection committee chairman Rob Mullens said when asked about how much Ohio State and Oklahoma were separated.

Mullens cited Oklahoma’s historic offense. The Sooners are on pace to set an FBS record for yards per play, averaging 8.92.

“While their defense has been a chal-lenge, their offense has been superior,” Mullens said.

The top three teams in the selection committee’s rankings, released Tuesday, held steady for a fourth straight week. Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame — all unbeaten — are Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Georgia moved into the fourth spot that was previously occupied by Michigan, heading into its SEC championship game against Alabama. It’s a given the SEC winner makes the playoff. Maybe the loser, too.

Notre Dame is already in the club-house at 12-0 and Clemson faces Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. That leaves one spot very much in play.

Ohio State faces Northwestern (8-4) in the Big Ten championship in Indianapolis and Oklahoma rematches Texas (9-3) in the Big 12 title game in Arlington, Texas. The Longhorns handed the Sooners their only regular-season loss in October. Ohio State’s lone loss was by 29 points at Purdue.

Can the Buckeyes vault past the Sooners if both win Saturday?

There is some precedent. In 2014, Ohio State beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big 12 championship game and jumped from sixth to fourth, passing co-Big 12 cham-pions Baylor and TCU. The Buckeyes might need a similar performance to have a shot this time.

What else could make for mystery heading into selection Sunday?

MAXIMUM OUTRAGEThe defense-smitten committee could

be presented with an alternative option for the fourth spot depending on how things go in the SEC championship game. It will drive fans outside of SEC country out of their minds, but Alabama seems like a lock to make the playoff even if it loses — barring some kind of epic beatdown of the Tide by the Bulldogs in Atlanta. Note: Alabama has never lost a game by more than 14 points under Nick Saban.

What will make SEC haters even angrier: What if Alabama beats Georgia 31-28 on a last-play field goal and the committee is so impressed with the Bulldogs they just throw them in there at No. 4, despite the two losses and lack of a conference championship?

That seems extreme considering the committee has yet to include a two-loss team in the playoff, bypassing ones with conference championships for one-loss teams without. But if Ohio State and/or Oklahoma are unimpressive winners on Saturday — or they both lose — the CFP could have two SEC teams in it for the second straight season. And, just to make even more people angry, Notre Dame’s inclusion would mean three of the Power Five conference would not be represented.

And while Coughlin didn’t point the finger at quarterback Blake Bortles, the Jaguars executive vice president of football operations made it clear during a radio interview Tuesday that Bortles’ struggles have been a significant part of the team’s failures in 2018.

“Our formula a year ago was play great defense, run the ball and do a superb job of play-action pass,” Coughlin told 1010XL during the sta-

t ion’s Jay Fund char ity event . “Obviously I still believe in that very much, but you have to … if you’re going to rush the football, you’ve got to have the explosive plays.

“You’ve got to put the ball down the field. There was a time when our big plays were all kinds of big plays, and it was this style of offense still being played. But that’s the formula that you still have to get to in my opinion.”

Coughlin, general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Doug Marrone have been widely criticized for the

team’s shortcomings. They signed Bortles to a three-year, $54 million contract in February, missed in free agency with high-priced guard Andrew Norwell and receiver Donte Moncrief, and used their first six draft picks in 2018 on players who have made little, if any, impact this season.

Coughlin has declined multiple interview requests this season, but spoke on the radio as part of his chari-ty event.

Chad Shryock could finally breathe a sigh of relief Tuesday night.

The Palatka High School girls soccer team he coaches gave Shryock his first career victory as the Panthers defeated

Interlachen, 3-0, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Sara Story, Shryock’s stepdaughter scored on two

long-distance kicks of 35 yards each goal in the final three minutes of the first half, to break a 1-1 tie, eventually leading to Shryock improving his record – and the Panthers’ record – to 1-3-1.

He was proud of the work his stepdaughter did playing midfield instead of her normal goalkeeping position as well as the work of backup goalie Ty’Kera Henderson, who made 10 saves. He was prouder still of four freshmen he brought up from

the junior varsity to play in the victory.“All got significant playing time,” said Shryock,

pointing at Shauntie McLeod, Kristen Godfrey, Breawna Smith and Zy’Kia Clark for their work up front and sometimes in the midfield. “They were able to keep balls up in Interlachen’s end of the field. I was proud of their play. I’m really optimistic about our future.”

Christina Bayse got her first career varsity goal in the seventh minute before Interlachen (0-3-1) tied it in the 24th minute on Esmeralda Santiago’s sev-enth goal of the season off of Emily Lundy’s sixth assist of the young season. Story leveled her first goal in the 37th minute, then after another foul, took another shot from 35 yards away that beat Rams goalie Lillian Covell (13 saves).

GAINESVILLE — Florida is finding points and energy from a couple unex-pected sources.

Noah Locke scored a career-high 18 points, Deaundrae Ballard added 15 and the Gators handled North Florida 98-66 Tuesday night.

Locke, a freshman from Maryland, has worked his way into the starting lineup in place of senior Jalen Hudson and emerged as a reliable scorer for the Gators (4-3).

“No one on our team plays any harder than Noah,” Florida coach Mike White said.

Ballard, a sophomore from Atlanta, is giving White production off the bench. Ballard reached double figures for the third consecutive game. He had a career-high 19 points in Florida’s last game against Stanford.

“I’m very proud of his progression,” White said.

Locke and Ballard were two of six Florida players with at least 10 points against the overmatched Ospreys (2-5). KeVaughn Allen scored 13, Kevarrius Hayes added 12, Keyontae Johnson chipped in 11 and Keith Stone finished with 10 for the Gators.

Florida shot a season-high 56.5 per-cent from the field and made 16 of 28 from 3-point range.

The Gators tied an NCAA record by having nine different players hit a 3. They reached the mark when walk-on Andrew Fava hit from long range with 31 seconds remaining.

“That’s what they do,” UNF coach Matthew Driscoll said. “We be more surprised when they’re not hitting 3s than when they are.”

Florida turned a one-point game into a double-digit lead midway through the first half and really got things going with a late run just before the break. Ballard and Johnson hit 3-pointers during the spurt.

Florida led 53-33 at intermission and stretched the lead to 30 with about 10 minutes to play.

White rotated 11 guys, and all of them scored. Freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard was the last to find the basket, ending a scoreless night with a 3-pointer with 4 minutes to play. He also had 11 assists and no turnovers.

“He’s pretty good, huh?” White said. “He’s tough. He cares. He’s about the right things.”

Noah Horchler led North Florida with 16 points. Garrett Sams (15), Ivan Gandia-Rosa (13) and J.T. Escobar (11) also reached double figures for the Ospreys.

Florida improved to 8-0 in the series, including wins in each of the last four years.

Locke and Ballard led the way in the latest one.

Brown made 11 of 14 free-throw attempts in a 28-point performance for Interlachen, which takes a 2-0 record into tonight’s home game with North Marion. Brown also had 11 rebounds, giving her a dou-ble double, and made five steals, two assists and three blocks.

The Rams never trailed, leading 10-2, 13-6 and 27-17 at the quarter breaks.

“We played well,” said IHS coach Kim Troiano. “We worked on offense (in practice) Monday and executed tonight. But we need to get more people to score besides Malea.”

The Raiders did not have a team two years ago and returned as a junior varsity last season, though they did play a number of varsity teams.

The Eagles (1-0) built a 22-8 halftime lead and were able to keep Crescent City at arm’s length.

“The first half, we didn’t play at all, but we had a great third quarter. We hustled and got back in it, said Crescent City coach Veronica Glover. “In the fourth quarter, we missed a lot of shots.”

Gardner-Johnson is leaving school early and entering the NFL draft.

Gardner-Johnson announced his decision Monday night on Twitter. The junior plans to play in Florida’s bowl game.

Gardner-Johnson says he based his decision on want-ing to maximize his value in the NFL draft.

Gardner-Johnson has been one of Florida’s most improved players in 2018, posting 66 tackles, including nine for a loss. He also has three sacks and two inter-ceptions.

The 11th-ranked Gators (9-3) are expected to have several players leave early, including defensive end Jachai Polite, linebacker Vosean Joseph and offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor.

UCF QB recovering from leg injuryORLANDO — The family of Central Florida quar-

terback McKenzie Milton says he has nerve damage in his right leg, but “blood flow has been restored” and he is recovering from the injury suffered during UCF’s last game.

Milton was carted off the field during the first half of the Knights’ victory at rival South Florida on Friday after getting injured while being tackled. He has been treated at Tampa General Hospital.

Milton’s family released a statement Tuesday thank-ing the doctors and nurses at the hospital and the medical and athletic training staffs at UCF and USF.

The Putnam County Board of CountyCommission received a grant award fora FY 2018 Edward Byrne MemorialJustice Assistance Federal Grant for$22,651.00. These grant dollars will beused towards the purchase an un-manned aerial vehicle (drone) for thePutnam County Sheriff's Office.

Wall Street investors are enamored with a newly emer-gent tech company.

It has nothing to do with posting selfies or finding a soul mate. The company is instead making billions of dollars sell-ing cloud-computing and other technical services to offices around the world.

Say hello to Microsoft, the 1990s home-computing power-house that is having a renaissance moment - eclipsing Facebook, Google, Amazon and the other tech darlings of the late decade.

And now it is close to sur-passing Apple as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company.

Yes, that Microsoft. As other tech giants stumble, its steady resilience is paying off.

That Microsoft is even close to eclipsing Apple — and did so briefly a few times this week — would have been unheard of just a few years ago.

B u t u n d e r C E O S a t y a Nadella, Microsoft has found stability by moving away from its flagship Windows operating s y s t e m a n d f o c u s i n g on cloud-computing services with long-term business contracts.

“They’ve finally turned the corner and have become a via-ble cloud player,” said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio man-ager for Synovus Trust. “They’ve made a very strong transition away from the desktop.”

A brief period of trading Monday was the first time in more than eight years that Microsoft was worth more than Apple. Microsoft surpassed Apple again briefly Tuesday, before Apple closed on top with a market value of $827 billion, just 0 .5 percent ahead of Microsoft’s $822 billion.

Apple has been the world’s

most prosperous firm since claiming the top spot from Exxon Mobil earlier this decade. Microsoft hasn’t been at the top since the height of the dot-com boom in 2000.

Microsoft became a contend-er again in large part because Apple’s stock has fallen 25 per-cent since early October, while Microsoft hasn’t done any worse than the rest of the stock mar-ket. But the fact that it hasn’t done poorly is a reflection of its steady focus on business cus-tomers in recent years.

Ju s t a f e w y e a r s a g o , Microsoft’s prospects looked bleak. The company was depen-dent on licensing fees from the Windows operating system used in personal computers, but people were spending money instead on the latest smart-phones. In 2013, PC sales plunged 10 percent to about 315 million, the worst year-to-year drop ever, according to research firms Gartner and IDC. It didn’t help that Microsoft’s effort to make PCs more like phones, Windows 8, was widely panned.

But a turnaround began w h e n t h e R e d m o n d , Washington, company promot-ed Nadella as CEO in 2014. He succeeded Microsoft’s longtime CEO, Steve Ballmer, who ini-tially scoffed at the notion that people would be willing to pay $500 or more for Apple’s iPhones.

That bet paid off. Windows is now a dwindling fraction of Microsoft’s business. While the company still runs consumer-fo-cused businesses such as Bing search and Xbox gaming, it has prioritized business-oriented ser-vices such as its Office line of email and other workplace soft-ware, as well as newer additions such as LinkedIn and Skype. But its biggest growth has happened in the cloud, particularly the cloud platform it calls Azure.

Cloud computing now accounts for more than a quarter of Microsof t’s revenue, and Microsoft rivals Amazon as a leading provider of such services.

Being less reliant on consum-er demand helped shie ld Microsoft from holiday season turbulence and U.S.-China trade war jitters affecting Apple and other tech companies.

President Donald Trump amplified those tariff concerns when he told The Wall Street Journal in a story published late Monday that new tariffs could affect iPhones and laptops imported from China.

The iPhone maker had already seen its stock fall after reporting a mixed bag of quar-terly results earlier this month amid fears about how the tech-nology industry will fare in the face of such threats as rising interest rates, increased govern-ment regulation and Trump’s escalating trade war with China.

Apple’s stock sours; Microsoft’s soars

MELBOURNE, Australia — A commercial pilot is under investigation after falling asleep in the cockpit of a freight plane and overflying his Australian island destination by 29 miles, officials said Tuesday.

The pilot, who has not been identified, was the only person aboard the twin-propeller Piper PA-31 Navajo Chieftain and was flying on autopilot during the early morning flight on Nov. 8 from Devonport city on Tasmania 155 miles northwest to King Island in Bass Strait, his

employer, Vortex Air, said in a statement.

The pilot “unintentionally fell asleep while in command of the aircraft,” the Melbourne-based airline said.

“The issue became apparent when air traffic control was unable to contact the pilot in-flight, and the aircraft trav-eled past the intended desti-nation point while operating on autopilot,” the statement said.

Air traffic control recordings showed several radio calls were made to the unresponsive pilot, The Australian newspaper reported.

The pilot landed safely on King Island, Vortex Air said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, a crash and risk investigator, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, the aviation industry regulator, are investigating the incident and the company’s management of pilot fatigue.

The bureau confirmed the plane had overflown the King Island Airport by 29 miles due to the pilot sleeping.

It said it would interview the pilot and review Vortex Air’s operational procedures before a report on the incident is made public.
