PALM BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER: October 13th 2017 ‘Loving learning, making a difference’ What’s on week beginning 13th Oct-17 Value: Achievement Dear parents and carers I am sorry that we didn’t have a newsletter last week. As you know, we have been short-staffed in the office since the start of term. This week we welcomed our new Receptionist, Mrs Angela Newbold, and we have a new Office Manager, Mrs Reema Koyappalli, who will be joining us after half term. I hope you will join the staff in welcoming them both to the team. We have had a fun two weeks at Palm Bay, with lots of opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. Year 5 have been visiting the forest area over the last few weeks to build a mini beast hotel and yesterday they found that lots of visitors have checked in! They had spiders, millipedes, worms, slugs and many more creepy crawlies. The children have enjoyed being outdoors working practically on their science project and have a good understand- ing of habitats, mini beasts and food chains. Reception class participated in a sponsored bike ride on Monday this week and have also enjoyed trips to the local farm. Year 1 have been planning a Woodland Party to have in the forest. This has included making decorations, masks and writing lists of all the things they need. We are proud to have attained the Bronze and Silver ‘Green Trees Award’ for schools, from the Woodland Trust, in recognition of our commitment to outdoor learning and ecology, and Mrs Page led a whole-school assembly on Thursday all about trees. She will also be recruiting a team of children to work on an Eco project this year and we will be going for the Gold award next. On Tuesday this week, Mrs Tong led the ‘Big Draw’ outside our outdoor classroom. Thank you to all the families who came to meet our artist in residence, Anabelle Losa, and get involved in creating the giant animated sea pic- ture. We will be exhibiting this work in the school soon. On Tuesday, 31 year 5 children went on a trip to The Theatre Royal in Margate. These children are part of the Shakespeare for Schools programme and they took part in a workshop with two professional actors from the or- ganisation. They had a brilliant time and got to practice some of their scenes on a real stage! Two children also got to go inside a professional sound and lighting booth. We can’t wait for the final performance at the Theatre Royal on November 17th! Finally, some thanks: Thank you to our wonderful PTFA who raised over £1000 at our last Boot Fair of the year last weekend. The PTFA AGM took place on Wednesday this week – thanks to all those who came along. This Monday we are cele- brating Harvest Festival and we are so grateful to everyone who has generously given food. We have chosen two local charities to donate the food to: Oasis and Thanet Families in Need. I know they will both be appreciate our support. Finally, we would like to thank local resident, Georgina Roberts, who has kindly donated a big bag of children’s magazines and comics to the school. As you know, we have a big drive for Reading for Pleasure this year and would welcome any other similar donations. Wishing you all a lovely weekend – enjoy the sunshine! Value: Achievement

Dear parents and carers

I am sorry that we didn’t have a newsletter last week. As you know, we have been short-staffed in the office

since the start of term. This week we welcomed our new Receptionist, Mrs Angela Newbold, and we have a new

Office Manager, Mrs Reema Koyappalli, who will be joining us after half term. I hope you will join the staff in

welcoming them both to the team.

We have had a fun two weeks at Palm Bay, with lots of opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. Year

5 have been visiting the forest area over the last few weeks to build a mini beast hotel and yesterday they found

that lots of visitors have checked in! They had spiders, millipedes, worms, slugs and many more creepy crawlies.

The children have enjoyed being outdoors working practically on their science project and have a good understand-

ing of habitats, mini beasts and food chains.

Reception class participated in a sponsored bike ride on Monday this week and have also enjoyed trips to the local

farm. Year 1 have been planning a Woodland Party to have in the forest. This has included making decorations,

masks and writing lists of all the things they need. We are proud to have attained the Bronze and Silver ‘Green

Trees Award’ for schools, from the Woodland Trust, in recognition of our commitment to outdoor learning and

ecology, and Mrs Page led a whole-school assembly on Thursday all about trees. She will also be recruiting a team

of children to work on an Eco project this year and we will be going for the Gold award next.

On Tuesday this week, Mrs Tong led the ‘Big Draw’ outside our outdoor classroom. Thank you to all the families

who came to meet our artist in residence, Anabelle Losa, and get involved in creating the giant animated sea pic-

ture. We will be exhibiting this work in the school soon.

On Tuesday, 31 year 5 children went on a trip to The Theatre Royal in Margate. These children are part of the

Shakespeare for Schools programme and they took part in a workshop with two professional actors from the or-

ganisation. They had a brilliant time and got to practice some of their scenes on a real stage! Two children also

got to go inside a professional sound and lighting booth. We can’t wait for the final performance at the Theatre

Royal on November 17th!

Finally, some thanks:

Thank you to our wonderful PTFA who raised over £1000 at our last Boot Fair of the year last weekend. The

PTFA AGM took place on Wednesday this week – thanks to all those who came along. This Monday we are cele-

brating Harvest Festival and we are so grateful to everyone who has generously given food. We have chosen two

local charities to donate the food to: Oasis and Thanet Families in Need. I know they will both be appreciate

our support. Finally, we would like to thank local resident, Georgina Roberts, who has kindly donated a big bag of

children’s magazines and comics to the school. As you know, we have a big drive for Reading for Pleasure this

year and would welcome any other similar donations.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend – enjoy the sunshine!

Reminder: Please can we ensure that we all drive and park

courteously, having in mind that young children cross the

roads and car parks in the local area and of the school.

Thank you.

Thank you to all the families that came on Saturday to help clear out the pond. It was hugely successful and we have made a big difference, as you can see from our before and after pictures.

I am sure there will be other opportunities to help in the future with stage 2! Watch this space for information.

School Pond update

Head lice are a normal part of childhood. As a parent you probably

know what a hassle it is to treat head lice and just how frustrating it

can be when your child comes home scratching their head yet again.

Sporting News—Miss Delderfield

Well done to the football team in the 1st round of

the Les Riggs Cup. Christchurch were great opponents but with a

solid performance we won 8-0 and are through to the 2nd round

against Chilton.

A massive well done to all the 24 children that competed in the 1st

Cross Country of the year held at Quex Park. It was very windy

but the children gave it their all and got round the course. A

massive well done to Taylor and Jake Burgess who both came 3rd

in their races. A list of times will go up on the sports board soon.

On Saturday I will be taking 2 teams to the Super Saturday event

at Upton. Good Luck and enjoy the day.

Thank you to all the Parents/Carers that support the children at

these events and also help me on the side-lines.

All after school club replies must be in on Friday 13th October and

confirmation slips will be sent home with your child next week.

SHACKLETON'S JOURNEY BY WILLIAM GRILL

This book has won 3 children's book awards including the New York

Times Best Illustrated Book. It describes the epic true story of how

Ernest Shackleton and his crew managed to survive crossing frozen

Antarctica in 1914, and is a testament to their great courage and

endurance. A fascinating and inspirational read. It is highly

recommended by Mrs Taylor.

Reminder: Please ensure you are not parking in the drop off

zone.
