WHAT THEY SAY...

“By far, the best thing about living at Beachmere Bay, is the people who live here and at Beachmere Sands. We have made so many lovely, kind and thoughtful friends who we can say, without a doubt, will remain our friends for life. The new Hamptons Country Club is a fantastic addition to our growing community and the landscaping around Beachmere Bay is spectacular.”

Col & Deb WoodsBeachmere Bay

Hello again and welcome to the summer edition of Time for you.

At this time of the year it’s always good to take a moment to reflect on the past 12 months before we rest and reset for the New Year ahead. It’s a time to celebrate the year’s wins while also considering how to extend on any learnings encountered. For us here at Palm Lake Group, 2018 has been filled with many wins and celebrations. We’ve unveiled new resorts and officially opened many world-class facilities right across the east-coast of Australia. We’ve won industry awards and been recognised as leaders in our field. And just when you’d think we’d slow down and relax into Christmas, we have just announced some major company news.

On November 21, Palm Lake Group settled on the purchase of Pelican Waters Golf Club and associated development land (including an approved residential precinct). The purchase secures the future of Pelican Waters Golf Club. Our planned redevelopment of the club and the Greg Norman-designed golf course will exceed members’ expectations in respect of quality and finish. While there will be a period of construction on-site to bring our exciting plans to life, we are committed to reducing any impact for club members. The future of this Sunshine Coast precinct is looking very bright.

Across the border in New South Wales, Palm Lake Group has also purchased several adjacent parcels of land at Forster with plans to develop our brand there. Nearby Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens and Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay have proved popular seachange locations for the Group and we expect Forster to be the same. Development approvals are already in motion and we expect to finalise our plans and begin work on-site in the later half of 2019.

Over at Palm Lake Care, this month also brings the official opening of our new Mt Warren Park aged caring community. It’s an inspiring double-storey building with many interesting communal spaces to engage our residents. From years of planning on paper and screens, it will be great to watch how our new residents interact in real life with the building’s design elements, which are quite unique to this location. Early work has also commenced on our new Palm Lake Care Toowoomba and Beachmere locations which, when finalised, will bring to seven the total number of care communities across our Group.

All in all, as you can see, 2018 has been another stellar year for Palm Lake Group and with so many big projects on the calendar, we are already looking forward to 2019. Merry Christmas to you all.

Manuel Lang CEO, Palm Lake Group

PELICAN WATERS GOLF CLUB JOINS THE GROUPLate in November, Palm Lake Group acquired Pelican Waters Golf Club and associated development land on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The course was originally designed by Greg Norman and is one of the most distinguished in the state. Agreements in place between Palm Lake Group and the local council will deliver more than 33 hectares of rehabilitated conservation land to the community and secure a reconfigured golf course, with a sports and recreation zoning in perpetuity.

MEDICAL CENTRE A FIRST

The opening of Palm Lake Care Bargara’s own medical centre, a first for the Palm Lake Group, is now imminent. Jacaranda Coastal Healthcare (as it will be known) is located in an extension of the building with two fully equipped GP consulting rooms and convenient on-site car parking. Residents of Palm Lake Care, adjacent Palm Lake Resort Bargara and all our staff will benefit from bulk-billed consultations, while the general public is also welcome to utilise this community medical centre. Local patients on any type of financial or government benefit will also receive bulk-billed visits.

PALM LAKE RESORT Caloundra Cay (pronounced Caloundra ‘key’) melts its magic into the sleek lines of beautifully designed coastal homes and whispers romantic rumours of a breathtaking country club set to grace its grounds. With interest in this distinctive, memorable and exclusive resort ever-increasing, Caloundra Cay will unveil six additional striking new display homes in January, bringing the total number of displays on-site to nine. Two more double-storey display homes will be open shortly afterwards. Caloundra Cay sales consultant Monique Lee says her team is most excited about revealing the first of their two-storey display homes – an Antigua design. The upper storey provides a completely private master bedroom retreat. This top-level sanctuary features a light-filled master bedroom and spacious walk-in robe adjacent to a handy study nook, as well as a large ensuite bathroom complete with separate bath and shower, and a chic double vanity. There’s also a separate retreat room across the hall, that owners could turn into a second private lounge or even a media/screening room.

There will be 57 homes built in Stage 1 of Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay, offering a mix of single- and double-storey designs. Monique says this stage will be complete by year’s end with slabs for the next stage scheduled to go down in January.

As far as facilities go, an eight-rink championship undercover bowls green, tennis court, pickleball court, outdoor gym and a three-hole chip-and-putt golf green is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2018. The sparkling jewel in the resort’s crown – the country club – will be complete by mid-2019.

Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay will spirit you away to the pristine beaches and lushness of tropical holiday Mecca, the Caribbean. Step inside our new display homes - there will be six more open by January. BYO passport.

Our community has spoken and we have listened. Palm Lake Resort can confirm that a parcel of land has been newly earmarked for on-site caravan storage for residents of Caloundra Cay. Given our residents’ appetite for travelling and adventure, a majority own caravans, motorhomes, trailer boats and those other ‘toys’ that enrich the retirement years. Along with Caloundra Cay, Palm Lake Resorts at Bargara, Beachmere, Cooroy-Noosa and Toowoomba also offer convenient on-site caravan storage space for residents, saving them the expense and inconvenience of having their prized possessions stored elsewhere.

THE OPENING of the Hamptons Country Club saw hundreds of guests dress up in their 1920s best, complete with champagne towers, decadent buffets, flapper-style dancing entertainers, vintage cars and more. Hamptons Country Club is a world-class venue that provides loads of activity opportunities but, most importantly, is an opulent magnet for those social butterflies among the residents. They can mingle here while indulging in the delights that this Hamptons-styled resort has to offer. For example, a refreshing poolside beverage never goes astray here and Saturday nights are never dull in the luxury cinema and tenpin bowling alley.

Palm Lake Resort Regional Sales Manager Brittany Baldwin says interest in Beachmere Bay has been beyond all expectation, proving the notion that people are not just looking to downsize in their retirement - they still want to enjoy luxury facilities and the finer things, as well as a sense of community, security and, of course, fun.

“We’ve got six display homes that have just opened as well,” Ms Baldwin said. “When finished, the entire Beachmere Bay resort will look and feel like it’s been airlifted from the Hamptons and dropped right here in Beachmere.”

FIT for LIFEINTELLIGENT COMPLETE BODY TRAINING IN JUST 17.5 MINUTES? UNBELIEVEABLE, BUT TRUE.

IF THERE’S one thing that Palm Lake Resort encourages across all our locations it’s that residents stay fit and active in their retirement, for optimum health and wellness. No one leads by that example more than company founder, Walter Elliott (pictured above). Wal was interviewed by the Gold Coast Bulletin newspaper recently to share his passion for fitness and his enthusiasm for the Milon gym system. Milon is a cloud-based electronic gymnasium that records users’ statistics to automatically set up each machine in the circuit specifically for each user while also recording their workout details to chart their longer-term progress. One high-intensity circuit takes just 17.5 minutes to complete. The Milon gym system has been installed in a handful of the newest Palm Lake Resort locations (including Bargara, Beachmere Bay, Cooroy-Noosa and Toowoomba – with Caloundra Cay next on the list) and residents are encouraged to complete three circuits per week.

“I just fit my card in and it tells me what I need to do. You do the rounds and the weights change as you go, the residents love them,” Wal says.

There are residents at Cooroy-Noosa recording amazing results via Milon. One male resident’s ‘health age’ (as defined by the data collected through Milon comparing users’ fitness levels to their actual age) had dropped by 16 years after three months of training. Milon Australia MD Marcin Lazinski says besides restoring confidence and joy in exercising, Milon is great for those suffering back and joint pain, weight problems or cardiovascular disease.

“As we get older we tend to forget we must exercise our muscles,” Marcin says. “As a general rule of thumb, we lose one per cent of muscle mass per year from the age of 35. Exercise can also be used as a form of prevention against diseases like obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis.”

DID YOU KNOW ?

• A 2014 study showed that 44.7 per cent of over 65s did not achieve 30 mins daily exercise.• Swimming and walking will maintain muscle strength, but will not improve it. • Regular resistance training can increase strength by 30 per cent in six months, counteracting 15 years of muscle loss.• Doing 10 eccentric exercises a day (ie. slow and long moving muscle contraction) can extend lifespan by up to 10 years.• You can incorporate eccentric training into your home routine eg. slowly sit down in chairs or walk slowly down stairs.• Milon has eccentric and concentric exercise capabilities.• Recommended exercise for over 65s is 30 mins moderate aerobic exercise per day, five days per week, and 20 mins vigorous aerobic exercise per day, two days per week.

THE ‘GREAT’ OUTDOORSFREE OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND A BARBECUE (WORTH $5000 TOTAL) WITH ANY NEW HOME PURCHASE? YES, THAT’S 5000 REASONS WHY THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO MOVE TO TEA GARDENS.

THE GREATER Tea Gardens area is a pristine, unspoilt retirement Mecca with its stunning headlands, quiet lakes, meandering rivers, national parks, reserves, surf beaches, sand dunes and wildlife. Not only does the local area encourage outdoor living but we do too, at Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens. With this resort location almost complete, there’s a great opportunity to literally enjoy the great outdoors with our current Outdoor Living promotion. With each of the last few new homes available to be purchased this summer, we are throwing in an outdoor furniture package and a Weber Q barbecue, worth a total of $5000. Palm Lake Resort Regional Sales Manager Jen Nicols says the Tea Gardens homes offer clever outdoor living/entertaining spaces that are unique among the Palm Lake Group.

“We have no fences here at Tea Gardens. Instead, residents enjoy enclosed back alfresco entertaining areas that offer privacy, security and comfort,” Jen says. “All of our homes’ outdoor areas face north to capture the warm sun in winter and offer shaded sanctuaries in the summertime. Our residents just love them.”

From their outdoor entertaining areas, residents overlook - and can easily access - lush communal gardens that separate their home from their neighbours. To find out more about how to score this awesome outdoor entertaining package, perfectly timed for summer, freecall the Tea Gardens Sales Centre on 1800 756 740.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO TEA GARDENS ?

The two towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are found on the estuary of the Myall River on the northern side of Port Stephens, a one-hour drive from Newcastle and 2.5 hours north of Sydney. Nearby is the Myall Lakes National Park that covers 44,000 hectares (including 10,125 hectares of lakes). Tea Gardens is regarded as the southern gateway to the Great Lakes district.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are connected by the Singing Bridge that spans the Myall River. Residents and visitors enjoy a wealth of interests including fishing (river and sea), windsurfing, golf, tennis, swimming, bowls and croquet.

The pristine beaches are very popular. Swimmers and surfers love Bennetts Beach, whilst the calmer water of Jimmys Beach is great for families.

The story goes that the Australian Agricultural Company arrived in the area in 1826 and it was their failed attempts to grow tea here that resulted in the name “Tea Gardens”. However, other accounts suggest the area was named due to the tea-tree in the area.

Almost 600 guests packed Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba, eager to hear homegrown talent Gina Jeffreys perform at our recent Open Day. The event’s country and western theme sat well with Gina – a pioneer for women in Australian country music. Across her career, Gina has released seven albums, each one rocketing to the top of the country charts. Along the way she has gathered an impressive collection of gold and platinum awards.

Originally from Toowoomba, Gina has performed gigs in so many far-flung locations including Nashville, Shanghai and East Timor. She has rubbed shoulders with the legendary Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Keith Urban and has even performed with Kenny Rogers. But it’s in her hometown of Toowoomba, performing for (and supporting) the locals, that gives her the biggest buzz. For example, Gina spread cheer among the children affected by the Toowoomba floods and was instrumental in pulling together a relief concert enjoyed by 25,000 people including Prince William!

Such a warm response Gina received from the Palm Lake Resort crowd, she performed an extended gig and stayed for an hour afterwards to meet and greet her fans. Gina performed a mix of old favourites, as well as a sneak preview of songs from her upcoming new album, Beautiful Tangle.

We host many Open Day events across our Palm Lake Resort locations nationally. They give visitors a great opportunity to taste the lifestyle on offer. If you are keen to join us at an upcoming Open Day, simply call our Sales Centres.

SUMMER EDITION 2018-19 SUMMER EDITION 2018-19

IT’S ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE AND LOVEABLE CITIES IN QUEENSLAND. HERE ARE THE TOP 5 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT TOOWOOMBA - YOU CAN READ MORE ON OUR WEBSITE!

01The Carnival of Flowers is perhaps Toowoomba’s biggest claim to fame, and while the city’s bloomin’ parks and gardens are the main attractions, there are a number of award-winning Palm Lake Resort residential gardens that prove size doesn’t matter. Resident Betty Sullivan has won a number of Carnival of Flowers awards over the past few years, as has the resort itself.

02 One of Queensland’s most famous philanthropists is a born-and-bred Toowoomba local. At 83 years young, Clive Berghofer has built a successful 60-year career developing property around Toowoomba while also donating more than $90 million. Clive has chosen Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba as the place to spend his retirement – when he decides to slow down!

03 Toowoomba is home to Queensland’s oldest licensed hotel, ‘The Farmers Arms’. But it’s not the only Toowoomba hotspot that prides itself on having a reputation for great ambience. Happy Hour at Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba’s Pinnacle Country Club bar regularly brings likeminded neighbours together for a drink and some laughs.

04 If there’s one thing that the Toowoomba area has an abundance of, it’s golf courses. Residents of Palm Lake Resort, however, get to play the world’s best international golf courses from the comfort of their own grounds via our state-of-the-art golf simulator. It’s also the best way to polish their swing before tackling those other Toowoomba courses.

05 Perched atop the Toowoomba Range, did you know the city of Toowoomba is one of the highest cities in Australia? Making the most of its 600m elevation above sea level, Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle’s award-winning Pinnacle Country Club offers some of the most stunning local views. And here’s a hot tip – one of the best views is from the resort’s spectacular infinity-edge pool this summer.

AVID GOLFERS WILL AGREE THAT A DAY ON THE GREEN IS MORE THAN JUST A SPORT OR A HOBBY – IT’S THE KEY TO LIVING A HAPPY, HEALTHY LIFE. YOU MAY THINK THAT SOUNDS EXTREME, BUT IT TURNS OUT THEY’RE NOT WRONG.

TENPIN BOWLING ALLEYS ARE POPPING UP ALL ACROSS THE PALM LAKE GROUP. IT’S A GREAT MULTI-GENERATION GAME TO ENJOY WITH VISITING FAMILY AND AMONG YOUR NEIGHBOURS.

GOLF is GOOD

BETTER your BOWLING GAME

SUMMER EDITION 2018-19 SUMMER EDITION 2018-19

FINDING A low-impact sporting activity that you enjoy, and are happy to do regularly, is a sure-fire way to ensure that you are getting in some important exercise. A few rounds of golf every week could be all you need to keep fit and healthy.

Did you know that you can walk up to seven kilometres playing an 18-hole golf course? Reports state walking can benefit your health in more ways than one – it can reduce your risk of heart disease, improve the fitness of your heart and lungs, help to manage conditions like muscle and joint stiffness, high cholesterol and diabetes, strengthen your bones and even improve your balance. Regular exercise – as we all know – can also help you to keep fit and trim, particularly if you’re ditching the golf cart and rolling your clubs from hole to hole yourself (rather than carrying them, which can cause stress to your back and shoulders). Plus, breathing in the fresh air benefits your digestive system, strengthens your immune system and gives you more energy and a sharper mind. And we can’t forget the power of good old Vitamin D from the sun for promoting bone growth and strength by helping our bodies to absorb calcium – just ensure you stay protected by wearing sunscreen and a hat when you’re out on the green.

Above all this, golf is a great way to keep in touch with friends – and also make new ones. So, grab your clubs, hit your local green and enjoy a day spent doing your body some good. And don’t forget that you can practise your swing at a state-of-the-art Palm Lake Resort golf simulator (in select resort locations). It turns out, a golf session is just what the doctor ordered!

WHETHER YOU’RE a regular strike scorer or can barely manage a spare, any tenpin bowler can do with tips from an expert. We asked Gail Torrens and Dick Ritger from the Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland to share their advice for bettering your tenpin bowling game.

How do I keep the ball in the lane and increase my scores? After you deliver your ball, continue the swing until your arm is in an ‘answer the phone’ or a ‘having a drink of water’ position. If you do this ‘follow-through’ action, your ball will stay on the lane for longer and you will be rewarded with higher scores.

Sometimes I release the ball at the bottom of my swing, and other times I release it somewhere else. How can I release at the same point each time? When you are about to release the ball, try to imagine where your forward knee is. Let your thumb out of the ball at this point every time. A consistent release point will allow you consistent scoring ability.

I’ve noticed that good bowlers seem to bowl without any effort at all – how do I do that? Without holding the ball, lean forward slightly and let your arm drop in a back and forth pendulum motion. Concentrate on the gravity feeling from the top of the backswing through to where you would release the ball – at the knee. When you bowl, try to remember that feeling. All top-average bowlers allow gravity to guide the ball rather than push and pull the ball prior to release. When you bowl, release the ball by just keeping your fingers bent. If you have trouble swinging the ball you may need to lean slightly forward while bending the knee deeply.

Why is my swing crooked? How can I make sure it stays straight? Lower your bowling shoulder, keep your head over the ball to align with your targets, push the ball forward while relaxing your arm but keeping tension in your shoulder, and then relax and swing your arm. Practice without the ball first to get the movement and ensure your swing is straight – this is a must for any good bowler – and make sure you complete a practise swing every time you bowl, as this pre-swing allows you to maintain a consistent, straight swing feeling. Concentrate on keeping the swing nice and even without pushing and pulling the ball in the swing. This will ensure a straight swing every time.

I have trouble hitting my target – how can I get better? Every time you deliver your ball onto the lane, keep your back toe on the floor and bend your forward knee deeply. By improving the balance of your upper and lower body you will be able to hit your target more often.

Here at Palm Lake Resort, we know how important golf is to a healthy lifestyle – that’s why we put so much effort into making sure our residents have access to the very best golf facilities. We’re so excited to announce our recent acquisition of the prestigious Greg Norman-designed Pelican Waters Golf Club. The Pelican Waters course ranks among the best in the world and makes the most of its picturesque Golden Beach surrounds with a pristine 6289m green, spectacular waterways and luxurious facilities – and it won’t be long until Palm Lake Resort residents have this first-class course right on their doorsteps.

IF THERE’S one thing Shaynna Blaze knows, it’s style. The television personality, interior designer and writer has spent a decade instructing homeowners on how to reinvent their interiors on Selling Houses Australia, and six years as an authoritative voice on design and decorating on hit show, The Block. So if there was one person ‘Time for you’ magazine would want to talk to, to find out how Palm Lake Resort residents could inject some simple style into their festive season celebrations, it was Shaynna. According to the style guru, whether it’s a summer lunch or a festive dinner feast, the dining table is the main meeting point where friends and family from near and far converge during the holidays and as such, Shaynna says it’s worthy of a bit of extra consideration.

“Christmas gives us permission to go a little over the top with our decorations, and the dining table is invariably the centrepiece of our creative attention,” says Shaynna. “Whether we are talking about Christmas lunch or any other summer celebration, the type of meal you’re planning should dictate the table-dressing magic you create.”

If you’re opting for a barbecue lunch, Shaynna recommends keeping table dressings to a minimum so that there is plenty of space for the food. But, she says, you can still have fun with decorations by layering bold festive colours (red, green, white) through your plates, tablecloth and napkins.

> Continued on Page 24

set your PLACE AT THE TABLEThe holidays are all about good food and even better company, so a celebratory meal is the perfect combination of the two. Break your bread in style this season with these tips, shared with Palm Lake Resort residents by celebrity TV style guru, Shaynna Blaze.

SWEET TREATS

4 ingredients fruit cakeIngredients 1kg mixed dried fruit3 cups (750ml) cold tea of choice3 cups (450g) self-raising flour1 cup (120g) pecan nuts

Method Place the fruit in a large mixing bowl.Pour over the tea, cover with cling wrap and soak overnight. Preheat oven to 125°C. Line a 22cm cake tin with baking paper. Add the flour and stir to combine. This is a thick mixture so you may need a little elbow grease. Using a spatula, scrape the mixture into the prepared tin. Decorate with pecans, starting from the outside in; laying them in a circular pattern. Bake for 2½ hours. Remove and leave to cool completely. Refrigerated, this cake will keep in an air-tight container for weeks.

For a more traditional celebratory dinner, according to Shaynna it’s all about snowy whites and a warm inviting glow. She suggests using both real tealight candles and tall flameless candles on your table to create ambience, surrounded by lush green foliage for contrast. When it comes to dishes and cutlery, keep it simple and classy with white and silver or gold tones. And if there’s one thing Shaynna wants Palm Lake Resort residents to remember, it’s that the holidays are about getting together with the people you love and connecting over a good meal. Consider how your guests will interact while they’re seated at the table and opt for low-level decorations. Or, if you’re looking to make a statement with height, opt for something that could possibly hang from overhead.

“There’s nothing worse than sitting down for a festive meal, only to find you can’t see the person opposite you because the table decorations are right in your eye line,” says Shaynna. “Or, think about ditching the centrepiece altogether and making the food the star of the show, putting your energy into making the plates, platters, bowls and place settings magnificent.”

Hosting more than six people? Shaynna says placecards can be a great way to add a personal touch – and prevent arguments about who your guests do (and don’t) want to sit beside – so get creative. Consider writing your guests’ names on Christmas crackers or interesting foliage, or even baking mini puddings and decorating them with individually labelled swing tags. Memorable celebratory meals are all about those little personal touches, she says.

TOP 5 GIFTS FROM THE HEART

WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE BEST GIFT WE’VE RECEIVED, THEY’RE USUALLY PRICELESS, NOT PRICEY – THE THOUGHTFUL PRESENTS THAT HAVE COME STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART, FROM SOMEONE WE HOLD

DEAR TO US. GIVE ONE OF THOSE GIFTS THIS GIVING SEASON, WITH THESE FIVE IDEAS...

WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR GRANDCHILDREN’S CHILDREN There’s something so special about a gift that has been passed down through the

family, and it’s even more special when you receive something that was created just for you. How precious would it be to receive a letter from a great-grandparent, talking

about their life at the time, what your mum or dad was like growing up and their wishes for you? Give your future relatives – whether they’re grandchildren, nieces,

nephews or otherwise – something truly special by writing them a letter.

01MAKE SOMETHING SPECIAL They say it’s the thought that counts when it comes to gift giving, and nothing is more thoughtful than something made by hand. Many Palm Lake Resorts have workshops and art or craft studios, so set some time aside to make something special for your loved ones. It doesn’t even have to be any good! As long as it comes from the heart and the recipient knows you took some time to make them something special, they will love it regardless.

02

CREATE A CHARM BRACELET If you have a brand-new grandchild, consider this idea – buy them a gold brace-let for their first birthday, and give them a charm to add to it every birthday moving forward. Even if your grandchildren are a bit bigger or all grown up, you can still buy them a special bracelet with a few charms that symbolise special moments or milestones in their lives. Building upon a present year after year makes it all the more special.

04

PASS ON AN OLD KEEPSAKE Do you have a special item – it may have even been a gift to you – that you love? No

matter what it is, from a beloved book to a piece of jewellery, or even furniture, consid-er freshening it up and passing it on to a loved one who you know will cherish it just as much as you have. You could even write a card explaining what the keepsake means to

you, recounting memories you’ve made with it and how you came to own it. 03

MAKE A SCRAPBOOK OF YOUR OLD PHOTOS There’s no better way to get to know someone’s life story than to look back through their old photos. While they may not be the most exciting photos,

gather all of your loose pictures and put them into a scrapbook, with notes about who is in the photo, what was happening at the time it was taken, and even a few funny anecdotes that you can recall. It will be a walk down mem-

ory lane for you, and a priceless piece of memorabilia for your loved ones. 05

the perfect GUEST BEDROOMTHE HOLIDAY SEASON IS HERE WHICH, FOR SOME PALM LAKE RESIDENTS, MEANS HOSTING FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO ARE IN TOWN FOR THE FESTIVITIES. MAKE THEIR STAY WITH YOU COMFORTABLE AND MEMORABLE WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS FOR TURNING YOUR SPARE ROOM INTO THE PERFECT GUEST RETREAT.

LOUNGING IN LUXURY If you want to give your guest’s room a luxurious hotel atmosphere, pay close attention to the bedding. Ensure sheets, pillowcases and duvets are crisp and fresh, but also high quality. Feel free to add a cosy throw blanket or decorative cushions but keep them to a minimum to avoid crowding. On the nightstand, provide a lamp and an alarm clock and not much more – ask yourself what would be on offer in a hotel room and stick to that.

ALL THE NECESSITIES Ensure your guest room has everything your visitors will need during their stay. Palm Lake Resort always designs second and third bedrooms adjacent to bathrooms for easy access and convenience in this respect. Freshly washed bath towels, hand towels and a bath mat should be awaiting their arrival. Small soaps, lotions and even a few spare toothbrushes and other toiletries won’t go astray either, in case they’ve forgotten theirs. Also, be sure to provide coat hangers for them to hang their clothes in one of the ample wardrobes.

LOVING TOUCHES Remember, it’s the little things that will ensure your guests have a memorable stay. Chocolates, a carafe of water, fresh fruit and/or fresh flowers on the bedside table are just

some of the ways you can make them feel welcomed as soon as they walk through the door. A selection of your favourite books or magazines will also make your guest feel like you have gone the extra mile to ensure their stay is enjoyable.

KEEP IT SIMPLE No one likes feeling as though they are intruding in someone else’s home, so make your guest bedroom feel separate from the rest of the house – this means keeping your personal knick knacks and photographs to a minimum in the guest space, and ensuring it is free of your clutter. If you want to add a personal touch for a close friend or relative, a photo frame or two holding a picture of a special

place or time spent together will always be appreciated but make sure your guest’s space feels like their own.

HEAVENLY SCENTS Nothing makes a space more inviting than how it smells. If your guest room doesn’t get much use throughout the year, ensure that you open the windows and doors prior to your guests’ arrival so that it doesn’t feel stuffy when they walk in. A diffuser with a selection of essential oils (a fresh daytime oil and a calming sleep oil are great starts), soy candles and even drawer sachets will keep the room smelling luxurious throughout your guests’ stay. Also, be sure to also use a scented fabric softener to wash towels and linens before the guests arrive.

BETWEEN THE ISOLATION AND SLOW PACE OF ‘ISLAND TIME’, THERE’S NO SUMMER GETAWAY QUITE LIKE AN ISLAND ESCAPE. STAY CLOSE TO HOME OR VENTURE FAR, FAR AWAY WITH OUR TOP PICKS FOR YOUR NEXT ISLAND VACATION.

ISLAND HOPPING

Phillip Island, VIC A must-do when visiting Victoria, Phillip Island offers the ultimate seaside escape just a few hours from Melbourne. The quiet townships have everything you need to relax and rediscover your passions, including picturesque golf courses, day spas and historic sites that feel frozen in time. Get a taste for history at the Churchill Island Heritage Farm, or head to Nobbies Centre, which is home to Australia’s largest Australian fur seal colony. With whale watching and koalas, birds and wallabies aplenty, Phillip Island is nature’s playground – and it could be yours, too.

Rottnest Island, WA With its abundant walking tracks, stunning snorkelling spots and unique population of small, furry residents, Rottnest Island is a natural wonder all

year ‘round. Explore the sandy dunes, the beaches and the bays, coming into contact with the unique flora and fauna – Rottnest Island is home to the majority of Australia’s quokka population – along the way. Take train, plane and automobile tours of the island, or sit back and relax at one of the many restaurants and cafes around town.

Stradbroke Island, QLD It’s known to locals as “Straddie”, and it’s one of few places near Brisbane where you truly feel like you’ve escaped from the hustle and bustle of life in the city – time slows from a sprint to a leisurely stroll as soon as you set foot on the barge. Picture rocky headlands and sprawling beaches, best viewed from the North Gorge Walk that winds around the gorges, as well as inland sand dunes and lakes. And while you’re there,

keep an eye out for turtles, dolphins and whales – oh, and what is arguably the best gelati outside of Italy.

Orpheus Island, QLD Do you dream of swimming in a pool that feels like it stretches on forever? Of a place that delivers the Great Barrier Reef right to your doorstep? Orpheus Island offers all that and more. The luxury private island lodge is the most exclusive address on the reef, hosting just 28 people at a time but promising the best dining, unwinding and undersea exploring.

Lord Howe Island, NSW With a tagline like ‘Just Paradise’, you might fear that Lord Howe Island couldn’t quite live up to the hype. But, with its crystal-clear waters, towering green cliffs and abundance of things to do – whether it’s meeting the native wildlife, indulging in

a massage, a gourmet dinner or exploring by foot or flipper – you’ll realise that tagline is absolutely fitting.

Tasmania Sure, it’s a state, but Tasmania is also kind of an island – and a pretty breathtaking one at that! Between the rugged wilderness and crystal-clear bays, Tasmania has to be seen to be believed. Wine connoisseurs will love the many vineyards, art aficionados will thrill at the Museum of Old and New Art and historians will marvel at the sites that mark important moments in Australia’s timeline. Tour the island by vehicle – you’ll be amazed how much of Tasmania you can take in in a short time.

The Whitsundays, QLD They’re Queensland’s pride and joy, bringing tourists from all over the

world to its white beaches and aqua waters. Whether you explore the Whitsundays by boat, foot or seaplane, we’re sure you’ll agree – they’re truly magical. With 74 islands to choose from, and abundant natural wonders to be found on each one, you’ll find it hard to say goodbye to the Whitsundays no matter how long you stay there for.

Kangaroo Island, SA Protected nature reserves make up over a third of Kangaroo Island, and the remainder somehow packs in enough art, culture, food, wine and shopping to promise you’ll experience something brand new every day. Whether you’re scanning the treetops for koalas or exploring caves, diving deep into the history of the island or snorkelling the shipwreck trail, there’s something to do and see around every turn.

SUMMER EDITION 2018

In any of the multi-million dollar Palm Lake Care communities, the most valuable assets are, without doubt, the people. Rich and colourful life stories continue to thrive within our aged caring communities. Here are two of them.

HERE, I CAN BE ME

Meet Norma

Gordon sits back in his comfy armchair, eyes fixed on passersby. Sporting a tailored shirt, well-pressed pants and a tie this particular day, he’s always immaculately dressed. He’s proud of the police badges that adorn his shirt - reminders of a career in dedicated service of others, albeit decades ago now. But that constantly quizzical look on his face? Does he wonder why you’re looking at him? Does he have a secret to share? Is he surprised? Puzzled? Most likely it’s just because his eyes were sewn on a little crooked…

Palm Lake Care Bargara resident Norma Spoor is quite the creative spirit. She’s got a green thumb and a knack for art and craft and, boy, does she love to sew. When Norma learned that Palm Lake Care kitchen team member Carrie had been storing her late father’s dressing gown for 12 years, not knowing what to do with it yet so attached that she couldn’t part with it either, Norma came up with a grand idea. Taking the care and respect that a tangible memory like this deserves, Norma crafted a gorgeous keepsake teddy bear out of the ageing dressing gown, complete with a police uniform that pays homage to Carrie’s father’s career. Norma’s caring act has given that once average dressing gown new life and brought a world of authentic happiness to Carrie and her family.

“I remember that old blue dressing gown from when I was a child,” Carrie recalls. “On cold winter mornings, that dressing gown would bring me a warm hug and I can also remember that dressing gown being thrown on my bed to keep me warm when I was sick.”

Carrie describes Norma as an “amazing, talented lady” whose selfless act is just another way that Palm Lake Care

residents are reciprocating the genuine care they receive from the Bargara team. Many see aged caring communities as places where residents live to receive care. But, through authentic connections and immense gratitude, these residents give just as much as they get. Our staff often talk about how rewarding it is to work in this aged caring community – how privileged they are to spend quality time among people with such worldly experiences and gratitude to share. The love, skills and thoughtfulness our residents bring is somewhat unique to their generation. They are teachers. And we literally care about that.

Gordon might be a tangible reminder of a beloved father lost to cancer, but he’s also physical representation of the care that is shared at Palm Lake Care Bargara. Wonky eyes and all.

Meet Antonio

Antonio Fratangelo (or ‘Tony’ as he’s more well known) has proved himself a gun on the popular Palm Lake Care Bargara pool table. It’s a game he played in his youth and a passion he has rediscovered since moving to this aged caring community. At 88 years young, Tony’s known to draw a crowd of fellow resident players, all keen for a game. So much so that Tony’s wife, Beatrice (who also lives at Palm Lake Care Bargara), has given in to the fact that she must share her husband with his beloved pool table - such is his passion for the game.

It was a big decision for the Fratangelos’ daughter, Vivienne Collis, and her two sisters to move their long-time local parents to Palm Lake Care Bargara. The Fratangelos had called Bargara their home for the past decade or so but, as is so often the case, their four-bedroom/two-bathroom

home had simply become too big for them. And Tony needed more care as his dementia intensified. The problem the girls had was finding a quality care provider that could accommodate their parents together. Vivienne also wanted to ensure her parents stayed in their cherished local area. Vivienne says Palm Lake Care Bargara has proven to be the right choice for their whole family.

“This is the best thing we could have done for Dad – he’s settled in so well,” Vivienne says. “At home, he’d simply sit around and fall asleep in his chair. Here at Palm Lake Care, he’s so social. He’s into everything!”

Strangers at the time, Tony and Beatrice were on the same boat to Australia from their homeland of Italy when

they first met in 1956. It proved to be a fateful voyage. The pair landed in Melbourne, were married within a year and welcomed their three daughters soon after. The family would holiday to Queensland in the family caravan so it was always going to be the state that drew them in their later years. The Fratangelos are now grandparents to four and continue to prove the strength of a loving family’s bond.

“They (Tony and Beatrice) can’t live without each other – we were so grateful to get them into rooms side-by-side,” Vivienne says. “They’ve got such beautiful rooms and there are such great facilities here at Palm Lake Care. The nursing staff have been so helpful, too – they are all so friendly. We are so very grateful.”
