The Holy Week is an announcement of the hope, of the triumph, of resurrection over death and pain. On these days we face pain and joy, betrayal and support, death and life. We also face our own sense of identity as children of God and followers of Christ and as human beings who often walk in pain but who also know hope and joy. Colored with sorrow, the ceremonies express gratitude to the Lord for His Mercy in becoming man to suffer and die for us. During this week many ancient liturgical rites are preserved. Through them we relive the occurrences at the end at of Christ’s life, in which we celebrate the Paschal Mystery whereby Jesus reconciled the world to His Father. All the Parishioners are asked to make this Holy Week a very special one. I encourage all to participate at daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, and I hope to see all of you at the Easter Vigil. I invite everyone to attend the Eucharistic Adoration on Holy Thursday and Prayerful vigil at Jesus tomb on Good Friday. I also urge everybody to reconcile with God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Holy Week. Paschal Triduum The word triduum draws its meaning from Latin roots and it refers to a period of three days. Particularly, it stands for a three– day period of prayer of devotion, held specifically in preparation for some feast, solemnity or event. Paschal Triduum is the period of three days beginning with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and concluding with the Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. The Paschal Triduum is the celebration per excellence of the entire liturgical year. These three days recall Christ’s Institution of the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders, His Passion and death, and His Triumphant resurrection from the dead. “Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.” (Phil. 2:8-9)

Holy Thursday– April 13th

This evening we recall what the Master did and said on the

night before He died, at the Last Supper, the Jewish Passover

meal. This is the day when Jesus instituted two very important

sacraments: Eucharist and Holy Orders (Priesthood).

Holy Thursday is considered the day of the priests. On this

day please pray for all the priests and for the vocations to the

priesthood around the world.

Good Friday– April 14th

Celebration of the Passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no Mass this day. On Good Friday in sorrow the

Church mourns the Master’s death, reverences the cross on

which our salvation was achieved, and marvels at this life of

obedience unto death. Remember that Good Friday is a day of

fasting and abstinence.

Easter Vigil– April 15th

Celebration of life. A rich selection of biblical readings

remind us where we come from a real Lord, whom we should

resemble. We celebrate the empty tomb of Christ and this is

the source of our joy.

A LENTEN TRADITION: VEILING THE CROSSES & REIGIOUS IMAG-ES The Church adopted the liturgy from the first centuries and set the churches so that we could celebrate the Holy Week the same way they do in Je-rusalem. This old custom of veiling religious images is a way of fo-cusing on the penitential as-pect of this liturgical season. It reminds us in a visual way that our faith is made possible only through the work of Christ in his suffering and death. The tradition is often practiced during the last two weeks before Easter, the Sunday prior to Palm Sunday and ending on Good Friday. Even though it is no longer called by this name as often, the tradition is still practiced in many places. In covering the cross and other religious images during the height of Lent, attention is centered on the Passion and death of Christ. This is why the only images NOT to be covered are the Stations of the Cross. Then, as in a dramatic unveiling, the images are again revealed to mark the end of the penitential season and the beginning of the joy of the Easter season and the hope that the Resurrection brings. It is a beautiful custom that teaches us about the meaning of the liturgical
