Palmetto Pipes The Prez’s Message, As I write this last note I can hardly believe this year is almost gone. We have had many great monthly meetings and many fine special events attended.. I’ve noticed it is still the same core group of members that make it to these get-togethers and make them happen as well. It is with my sincere hope that more of you will take some time next year to attend a meeting or drive or event. Savannah will be hosting the PARADE in August of 2011 and for any Porsche owner this is something you really should plan to attend all or part of. We had a wonderful meeting last week at Gordon King’s that set the mood for winter in place. He and Sue were as usual the most gracious of hosts and I think everyone that attended enjoyed the company, the food, and of course his wonder-ful collection of vehicles. Our Club Christmas party is next Saturday and I hope those we don’t see that often will come. Even if you don’t sign up in time for the catered dinner bring a gift and join us for the gift swapping game if you can. I’ll be handing out the Red Baron award to a member [could be plural] at the dinner. This is for someone who put in the most effort all year to be a part of the Palmetto Region and make the saying” It’s not just the cars it’s the people” so true. I also hopefully will have in my hands some Porsche Club Trophies I was honored to be able to select and order from Porsche Club AG this summer. If you are on my list and not there or they don’t make it in time I’ll see to it you get them. I wish for everyone in the Club to have a great Holiday season and the best of the year to come. Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy Festivus Scott Hornsby

GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS

PICTURE FROM WWW.GERMANY-TOURISM.DE. German-style Christmas markets are resonating outside Germany. Being held in the US in Denver, Chicago, Baltimore, NY, Cincinnati, Philly and several big and small cities. But if you want the real thing, you’ll have to book a flight across the Atlantic. If your in Germany between the end of November and to just before Christmas visiting one of the markets is a must. They are an essential part of the German Yuletide season. They should be seen, smelled, tasted and totally experi-enced. Christmas markets can usually be found around a huge Christmas tree. You’ll find excited, cherry-cheeked chil-dren bundled in winter cloths marveling at the sight of toys, Christmas tree ornaments and candy piled high on the rows of wooden stands hung with evergreen boughs and lights. The kids also enjoy pony or merry-go rounds, visiting puppet shows and just having an awesome time as the meet St. Nicholas. The stand features handcrafted items, ceramics and wooden items, unfortunately are no longer lighted by tallow candles or oil lamps as they were in the past. But the soft glow still hangs in the air if there’s a nice blanket of snow. Entertainment, starting around 5pm include choral serenades or trombone recitals from balconies overlooking the scene. Yes, these markets are held outside in the middle of winter despite the logic of doing so. So it goes to say that the food and drink lean towards roasted chestnuts, hot sausages and hot spiced wine. You’ll probably find a heated tent where you can get off your feet to enjoy these flavorful delights. Bock beer is another German specialty of the winter season. Looking for the best time to visit one of the markets, pick a weekday. But if you can only manage a Saturday or Sunday make sure to do so early. The weekend crowds can be fierce. You’ll also find the best selections early on. If you go thinking you’ll get a bargain be for warned the markets are about the atmosphere not getting bargains. You’ll pay exactly what you would elsewhere and the selection is limited, so don’t plan this being your Christmas shop-ping stop. The most celebrated Christmas market in Germany is found in Numberg’s Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt. The Frauenkirche, overlooking the market has a glockenspiel, a bell clock on which wooden figures cavort several times a day. This is the place to sample all the good things associated with Numberg. You’ll find the celebrated lebkuchen a very rich honey spiced cookie. Don’t forget to sample one of those little finger-length bratwurst as well. You’ll also

find the tinsel angel with a wax face and the edible prune man, made of nuts and dried fruit. Just about every big city and many smaller communities in Germany has Christmas markets. To find one in a city you’ll be visiting got to www.germany-tourism.de/ENG/culture_and_events/christ-mas_markets.htm. Select a city for informa-tion about dates and opening times.

GERMAN RECIPE “LEBKUCHEN”

(SOURCE: Jennifer McGavin, About.com: German Food) Nurnberger Lebkuchen or gingerbread has been around since the 14th century, when Nurnberg was a rich city with good trade associations. Now you can make Nurnberger Lebkuchen in your home without any special German ingredients. These soft, spicy cookies keep for several weeks.

Makes about 32 three-inch cookies Prep Time: 25 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 45 minutes INGREDIENTS: “COOKIE DOUGH” ½ c. softened butter 1 c. sugar 3 c. white flour 4 eggs 1 T. Lebkuchen spice (see note) 2 T. cocoa powder 1 ½ tsp. Double acting baking powder 1 c. milk 1 ¾ c ground almonds 1 T. rum or orange liqueur ½ c. caned lemon peel, chopped “GLAZE” ½ c. granulated sugar ¼ c. water ½ tsp. Vanilla 1 –2 T. rum or liqueur ½ c. powdered sugar “EXTRAS” 32 Oblaten (baking wafers) 3 inch size ¼ c. shredded coconut ½ c. raisins, soaked in rum and chopped

PREPARATION: Cream butter, sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Mix in flour, spices, cocoa powder and baking powder, alternating with milk. Fold in nuts and lemon peel. Stir in rum. Stir in raisins and coconut if you are using them. If you are not using the Oblaten (they look like Catholic communion wa-fers and are purchased in Germany or at German deli, etc) draw 3-inch diameter circles on parchment paper using a cup or biscuit cutter as a template. Drop about 3 tablespoons cookie dough into the center of each circle. (If using “Oblaten” drop the dough onto the wafer and smooth to the edges). When tray is full, use the back of the spoon to fill out circle, slightly mounding the dough towards the center. Bake at 375 degree for 15-20 minutes. Turn down oven to 350 degrees if cookies are browning too much. Let cool for a few minutes, then remove to a cookie or cake rack to cool. While they are still warm, make the glaze. Place ½ c. sugar and ¼ c. water in a small saucepan on the stove. Bring to a boil and boil for a few minutes. Add vanilla and liqueur or rum. Sift powdered sugar over hot sugar syrup and stir. Using a pastry brush, brush warm glaze over warm cookies. Let dry completely. Dry glazed cookies for a day (to dry the glaze so it stays a bit crunchy) then store in an airtight container or freeze.

“NOTE about LEBKUCHEN SPICES”

If you do not buy premized “Lebkuchen Gewurz” from a German store, you may make your own. 2 T. ground cinnamon 2 tsp. Ground cloves ½ tsp. Ground allspice ¼ tsp. Ground nutmeg ½ tsp. Ground coriander ½ tsp. Ground cardamom ½ tsp. Ground ginger ½ tsp. Ground anise seed Use 1 to 2 tablespoons per recipe

SOMETHING GERMAN “GLOCKENSPIEL”

(source: Wikipedia Encyclopedia)

A glockenspiel (German Glocken (bells) + spielen (to play) is a percussion instrument, composed of a set of tuned keys arranged in the fashion of the keyboard of a piano. Making it similar to a xylophone. However, the xyleo-phone bars are made of wood, while the glock-enspiel’s are made of metal plates or tubes, making it a met allophone. The glockenspiel is usually smaller and higher in pitch. In Ger-man, a carillon is also called a Glockenspiel. When used in a marching or military band, the bars are sometimes mounted in a portable case and held vertically, sometimes in a lyre-shaped frame. In orchestral use the bars are mounted horizontally. A pair of hard, un-wrapped mallets, usually with heads of plastic or metal, are used to strike the bars. The mallet heads can also be made of rubber. If laid out horizontally, a keyboard may be attached to the instrument to allow chords to be more easily played. The glockenspiel is limited to the upper register, and usually covers about 2 ½ to 3 octaves. The glockenspiel is a transposing instrument. It’s parts are written 2 octaves below the sounding notes. When struck the bars give a very pure, bell-like sound. One classical piece where the glockenspiel is used is Mozart’s Die Zauberflote. (This part, like many others, calls for a keyboard glockenspiel. The part is sometimes performed on a celesta,

which sounds quite different from the intended effect.) A modern exam-ple of the glockenspiel is Steve Reich’s 1974 composition Drumming, where the glockenspiel becomes a major instrument in the 3rd and 4th movements. Other instruments that work on the same struck-bar principle as the glockenspiel include the marimba and vibraphone. There are also many glockenspiel-like instruments in Indonesia gamelan ensembles. Glockenspiels are still quite popular and appear in almost all genres of music ranging from hip-hop to jazz.

THANKS, GORDON! Our November monthly meeting was graciously hosted by club member Gordon King. Oysters, shrimp and blue crab along with numerous other side dishes were enjoyed by all that attended. Of course not only were we treated to a wonderful array of foods, we also had the enjoyment of walking among some of Gordon’s prized cars. Although I love and favor the Porsche’s I will say that the Z8 BMW is SWEET! Of course spending quality time with great friends was the best bonus of the evening.

CHRISTMAS IDEA Okay ladies if your stuck on finding that perfect Christmas gift for your hubby, consider a garage reno-vation. How about renovating the garage? And guys, the Porsche owning ladies probably wouldn’t mind a need “canopy” for their beloved vehicle as well. Here’s just a sample.

Parade is the “big” Porsche Club event of the year: our annual national convention. Parade has a potpourri of activities and club members from all across North America come together for this once a year extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars and tours add-ing to the event’s variety. For many club members, Parade is their big vacation for the year. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year, at Parade! The term “Parade” evolved in August 1956, when 64 enthusiastic entrants gathered at a suburban Washing-ton, D.C. motel for four days of Porsche enjoyment and friendship. A “parade” of Porsches through the coun-tryside caused everyone to refer to the event as the Parade and the name has stuck. The current size of our convention makes a true parade of cars logistically difficult but we still do it when we can, and it is always a sight to see. Additionally, there are many other events to keep you occupied, please see the other pages in this section to get an idea of all the fun waiting for you. Besides entrants, representatives from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, and from Porsche Cars North America also attend, along with numerous automotive-related spokespeople. Porsche Panorama, the official magazine of PCA (and occasionally other national publications) publicize the event and the results. Any member in good standing is welcome to attend the Parade and enter the four major competitive events. Along with them, CAFP and JPP members may also attend and compete in the four competitive events. CAFP (College Age Family Program) are children of members 18-24 years old. JPP (Junior Participate Program) are children of members who are 16-17 years old. Other immediate family members are also welcome and en-couraged to attend, however they may not enter the four major events. Complete details on entrant eligibility may be found in the Parade Competition Rules. Parades are typically held in the summer, and each year the Parade moves to a different part of the country. Locations range from downtown locales to remote resort areas. Each year is unique. If you would like to see a Parade in your local area, please contact the National Parade Committee Chair The Parade is a full week of fun that contains everything great about PCA. Come out and enjoy the party!
