As Mayor of the City of Palos Hills for the past 28 years, I am honored and proud to be part of our Pride and Progress. Over the years, especially for those who were original homeowners, we have all seen our City transform into a mod- ern, progressive community. From the beginning with a population of less than 3,000 residents, to a growth of almost 18,000 residents today, Palos Hills has become a high demand residential location in the southwest suburbs. Over the last 25 years we have seen the implementation of a modern infrastructure system with new roads, sidewalks and lighting along with many other improvements and a Public Works Department second to none. We have also gone from a part-time Police Department to a full-time department with a complement of 33 sworn officers with modernization and the high professional standards set by our current Police De- partment. Palos Hills is proud to have one of the lowest crime rates in Cook County. Also over the years, the City of Palos Hills has been proud to be a partner with the North Palos Fire Protection District, formed prior to the incorporation of the City. North Palos is another example of outstanding professionalism and modernization to which we are all very proud to have in our City. One of the great aspects of living in the City of Palos Hills over the last 50 years has been the growth and services provided by our Resource and Recreation Department. The department, created under this ad- ministration, provides many social and recreational services to all age groups in Palos Hills along with many special events including the annual Summer Friendship Festival. During the past 25 years we have acquired over 50 acres of additional parkland, close to 200 acres of leased open lands from the MWRD, along with building a new Park and Recreation building and the Town Square. We moved City Hall to its current location on Roberts Road and modernized the old City Hall into a single Police Headquarters. We took a 40-acre former landfill site and converted it into a golf course and refurbished all the parks with new equipment and landscaping. A sincere Thank You to all of the employees of the City of Palos Hills who have worked hard over the years in contributing to its success. The City of Palos Hills is proud to be home of Moraine Valley Community College, Stagg High School and the elementary schools of District 117. Palos Hills has become the educational center in the southwest suburbs and we congratulate the many people who have worked over the years to bring quality education to our community. Recently we saw the dedication of a new, modern library building located next to the Police Department, which offers rich resources to those in the district. Like any community the root and soul of its citizens have centered on many religious denominations. These many religious affiliations have been an integral part in our City becoming what it is today. Palos Hills is also home to many service organizations whose activities and volunteerism has also added to the quality of life in our town. Speaking of volunteerism, Palos Hills has been recognized over the last 25 years for receiving a total of 45 Illinois Hometown Awards. No other community in the state of Illinois has even come close to accomplish- ing this record. The City of Palos Hills extends its appreciation to the many businesses who chose our community to locate and especially to those who have been around since almost the beginning. We thank the Hills Chamber of Commerce for their cooperation and work over the years and as always, we ask our residents to support all of our business establishments. Finally, the 50 year history of the City is really about all the people who made our town their choice destina- tion – worked hard, raised families and have retired – right here in town. I thank you for helping make the City of Palos Hills the Pride of the southwest suburbs. It has been your investment, your cooperation and your pride in your town, which makes this 50 th Anniversary celebration a benchmark in the continued suc- cess of our City. Thank you for giving me the honor and privilege to serve you over the years and I look forward to making Palos Hills an even better place to live in the future. Sincerely Gerald R, Bennett Mayor

Dear Residents,

On October 25th the City of Palos Hills will celebrate its 50th year of incorporation. As Mayor of the City of Palos Hills for the past 28 years, I am honored and proud to be part of our Pride and Progress. Over the years, especially for those who were original homeowners, we have all seen our City transform into a mod-ern, progressive community.

We have also gone from a part-time Police Department to a full-time department with a complement of 33 sworn officers with modernization and the high professional standards set by our current Police De-partment.

The department, created under this ad-ministration, provides many social and recreational services to all age groups in Palos Hills along with many special events including the annual Summer Friendship Festival.

No other community in the state of Illinois has even come close to accomplish-ing this record.

The City of Palos Hills extends its appreciation to the many businesses who chose our community to locate and especially to those who have been around since almost the beginning. We thank the Hills Chamber of Commerce for their cooperation and work over the years and as always, we ask our residents to support all of our business establishments.

Finally, the 50 year history of the City is really about all the people who made our town their choice destina-tion – worked hard, raised families and have retired – right here in town. I thank you for helping make the City of Palos Hills the Pride of the southwest suburbs. It has been your investment, your cooperation and your pride in your town, which makes this 50th Anniversary celebration a benchmark in the continued suc-cess of our City.

Thank you for giving me the honor and privilege to serve you over the years and I look forward to making Palos Hills an even better place to live in the future. Sincerely Gerald R, Bennett Mayor

Greetings from the 1st ward! I hope all of the residents and businesses of the first ward and the entire city are enjoying the wrap up to summer and the fall season finds you in good health. I wanted to share some of the highlights of future events, and take a minute to remind you of some important information. Please try to come out for Palos Hill’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, October 25. Tickets are now on sale at the Community Center; 8455 W. 103rd St. or City Hall; 10335 S. Roberts Road. The event will be held at the Belvedere Chateau; 8055 W. 103rd St. from 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm. Tickets are $50.00 per person and include a prime rib dinner, open bar and dancing. It would be great to see lots of first ward residents! Also, if you were here in 1958 please stop by the city’s website at www.paloshillsweb.org and follow the links on the page to tell us about being one of the “originals”. Great congratulations to the 2008 Beautification Contest winners in the first ward! The Pazdziora, Spiros, Opiela, Romine & Mendez and Tilley homes are a terrific example of pride in your home and pride in Palos Hills. Importantly, in times of bad weather, could you take a few minutes to check on your elderly neighbors? So often seniors don’t have relatives living nearby, and your call or visit would mean so much. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about anything Palos Hills related, please do not hesitate to call me at 708-599-1244. Have a great fall! Joan Knox, 1st Ward Alderman

A Thank You to Our Residents from First Ward Alderman Marty Kleefisch

As we approach the end of another mostly beautiful summer, although sometimes a little too warm and recently a whole lot too wet, I wanted to take this opportunity as chairman of both our Public Safety Committee and our Beautification Committee to say thank you to our many wonderful Palos Hills residents, business owners/managers, and our own employees. In previous newsletters, I have asked our residents and businesses to pay attention to property mainte-nance because of the impact well maintained property has on the overall aesthetics of our community and everyone’s property values. It is obvious to me, as I drive through Palos Hills, that many home-owners and business owners/managers have shown their cooperation by noticeably improving their properties. In this respect, I want to extend my gratitude to each and every one of you and encourage

others to follow your example. In addition, I wish to extend my congratulations to all 2008 beautification contest winners and recog-nize this year’s group of citizens who served as judges, our Community Resource Department and our City Administration for the help they give to me in managing and running this annual competition. Also, our Public Works Department has once again provided us with the kind of hanging flower baskets that are the envy of other communities. Please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed as we all admire the beauty of our city. On the topic of Public Safety, Palos Hills remains one of the safest communities in all of southwest Cook County because of the coop-eration of our residents and the efforts of the fine members of our Palos Hills Police Department. In past newsletters, I have asked and will continue to ask all residents to obey our laws, especially with regard to safe driving. When we drive the speed limit, stop at red lights and stop signs and show courtesy to pedestrians and other drivers, we are not only adding to everyone’s safety, but we are also sending the right message to all the young people in our families and in our community. Please continue to be a good example to our youth. You may have noticed recently increased police patrols throughout the city. This added service is being provided because of the efforts of Police Chief Paul Madigan and Mayor Bennett in securing a Federal Grant to add three part-time community service officers to our police department staff. Finally, I want to encourage everyone to enjoy our new walking path around Pleasure Lake, which has been physically created and will continue to be enhanced through the cooperative efforts of all City Departments. The lake path can be accessed from 108th and Roberts Road.

News From the Second Ward Pauline and I, along with the Valley Inn are pleased to announce that we funded three $500.00 scholarships to three very deserving students in our ward. The three winners are Andy Relstab, Nicole Eichstaedt, and Breanna N. Vrkljan. The scholarships were awarded after the scholarship applications were reviewed. We plan to offer the scholarship again next year and like this year, applications can be obtained from the park department and online from the Palos Hills website. Another matter that keeps coming to our attention is building permits and licenses. When a building permit is granted, it is the city’s responsibility to see that whatever is constructed conforms to our building codes. Guarantees and warranties must be negotiated by the homeowner. You certainly can ask people in the building department about whether the contractor is licensed and whether or not complaints about service have been made, but the contract you sign is between the contractor and yourself. It definitely makes sense to gather as much information as you can before making your final decision. As always, if there is ever a question or concern about any job that requires a building permit, you may call or e-mail us and we will help you find answers to your questions. Also, as a final reminder, don’t forget the Palos Hills 50th anniversary party on October 25th at the Belvedere Chateau. We hope to see you there! Pauline Stratton Mark Brachman 2nd Ward Aldermen

Another summer has passed and we hope all is well. Fall is here and the leaves will be falling and the raking begins.

Remember, there is a ‘No Burning Law’ on leaves in this area.

Our contract with Waste Management is simple on yard waste:

Use Yard Waste bags OR

Cans with a YARD WASTE sticker on the side Yard Waste stickers are available at city hall. Your leaves

will be gone at no extra cost. Have fun!

Fall is also a time for cool evenings and small outside gatherings with friends and neighbors. A small fire in a

fire pit (not just on the ground) or commercially made fire boxes is a great way to enjoy the fall season.

Burn no leaves, no treated wood, no garbage or trash. Have a working garden hose nearby for emergencies,

be safe and have fun. Don’t forget the hot dogs and marshmallows.

BE CAREFUL!!! Optional, call us with an invitation, see you then.

We would like to recognize and commend the Hills of Palos subdivision also known as “Los Palos” located at Kean Avenue and Los Palos Lane. An inte-gral part of this community is a series of ponds that act as a detention system for storm water that flows there from parts of Hickory Hills as well as neighbor-ing streets, homes, townhomes and condominiums in Palos Hills. The ponds are owned and maintained by the seventy two homeowners who live in the Hills of Palos subdivision. Over the past several years the Board of the Hills Homeowners Association have met with numerous contractors to discuss differing solutions to the erosion of the shoreline of the middle pond, due to the rush of water that flows through dur-ing and after a storm. Recently they met with Palos Hills resident Paddy Conway of Cotswold Gardens, LTD. Mr. Conway suggested they consider stacking large slabs of limestone referred to as outcropping to outline the pond. The project on the middle pond was just completed as the most recent storm hit and the stone wall met all expectations. In speaking with the Homeowners Association Board members as well as Mr. Conway, the greatest chal-lenge was to find a solution that would address the concerns of controlling the rushing water while at the same time, making the pond aesthetically appealing.

We are proud to say they have achieved their goals as the project was well designed, constructed and is at-tractive as well as functional. We would like to thank the Hills Homeowners Board as they continue to benefit the residents they represent.

Greetings from your 5th Ward Aldermen

Winter will be here before you know it. Here are some reminders. Pre-winter Maintenance

Make sure your car is in good working order for the up-coming cold, snow and ice season. Carry winter equip-ment like a small shovel, salt or sand, and windshield de-icer in your trunk in case of an emergency.

Keep an eye out for the salt trucks on the roads. Please, realize that they have a very important job to do, keeping our streets dry and clean. DO NOT follow too close.

Make sure your furnace is in good working condition. Remember to replace the filter with a new one.

Attention Seniors If you are unsure of driving in inclement weather, please call the PACE bus. They will take you for doctor appointments, grocery, and other places. They do require 24 hour notice. You will be picked up at your home and returned to your home for this service. Please call Community Resources at 430-3822 for further information. Flu shots will be available at the Palos Township Health Of-fice on Roberts Road in Palos Hills. Please call the township at 598-2441 for the dates that the shots will be available. Palos Township also has a “medical closet”. If anyone is in need of temporary crutches, walkers, canes etc. please contact the township and possibly, if available, you can use this equipment, instead of purchasing it.

Pleasure Lake If you walk or stroll outside, take a look at our Pleasure Lake located at 108th and Roberts Road. It is a beautiful

nature area to walk through the woods around the lake. It has just been completed and the grand opening was on

September 20th. See wildlife and nature in the raw walk-ing over a wooden plank bridge over the wetlands. Walk around the lake or just a short stroll around. The entire area has over 1-1/2 miles of walking trails. Our public works department erected this entire area as a walking

path, and they should be commended on the job they did. If you see any of our workers, please tell them what a

great job they did on this open wetlands, for our residents to enjoy.

Homeowners, Condo Associations, Townhome Associations

If you would like us to speak at your meetings, please give us a call and we will attend and tell you what is happening in the city or help you solve any concerns that you may have.

We would like to wish all of our residents a safe and

happy holiday.

Remember we are here for you

From the desk of Paul Madigan, Chief Palos Hills Police FIREARM SAFETY: The Police Department is offering to residents free gun locks. These devices are suitable for practically any type of handgun or rifle. The limit is two free locks per fam-ily, while supplies last. Persons requesting the gun locks must come to the police station and provide proof of residency (driver’s license, state ID) in order to receive the locks. Help prevent a tragedy from occurring to children or other family members. DRIVER SAFETY: Road construction and detours seem to be just about everywhere these days, leading to a stressful trip and short-tempered drivers. Add to that the approaching late-fall into winter weather. Icy road conditions and snow cause accidents and injuries to oc-cur when you least expect it. Drive Safely – Arrive Alive! FALL SCAMS: The police department is warning residents that Fall is a time when most home repair fraud and scams take place. Don’t be taken in by criminals who claim that they can save you money in repairs since they are “in the neighborhood”. Driveway repairs, home insulation, and roof repairs are typical scam targets. Remember that all persons and companies that do work in Palos Hills must be registered with City Hall, and must provide identification when requested. If you are still in doubt, call the police to check them out.

Returning U.S. Marines Honored On September 23, 2008 at the Palos Hills Town Square Veterans Memorial Mayor Bennett, the Palos Hills City Council and the Soldiers Guardian Angels honored two Marines who had recently returned home after having been deployed to Iraq. He attended Conrady Junior High and graduated from Stagg High School. We are very proud of both of these young men for the courage and bravery they have shown to protect our way of life. Watch your Mailbox! U.S. Census Bureau Conducting American Community Survey Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census. The last census was completed in 2000 and another is com-ing in 2010. In addition to the census, the Bureau conducts the American Community Survey to provide information on population and housing throughout the decade. If your address is one randomly chosen to receive the American Commu-nity Survey, you are required by law to respond. Your response helps the City establish goals, identify problems and solutions as well as determines funding for various programs. Remember — all of the information collected by the Cen-sus Bureau is confidential and you are required by law to respond. Sewer Check Valves The recent rains have revealed problems at homes which were built before over-head sew-ers were required. Many of these homes have a check-valve on their sanitary sewer lines to prevent sewerage back-up into the house. These valves require periodic maintenance to be certain they operate properly. The valve should be taken apart, cleaned, lubricated and re-sealed to be certain the “gate” operates freely to prevent sewerage back-up. A “handy” homeowner may be able to do this maintenance himself but if they are not, a reputable licensed plumber or sewer contractor should be retained for this service.

Winter Snow Tips Snow Removal — It is illegal to plow, blow or shovel snow off private property onto City streets. If you have your driveway privately plowed, be sure the contractor is aware of this ordinance. Also, please remember that when following a plow, keep behind the plow by at least 50 feet and exercise caution when passing.

Shovel Those Hydrants! After a snowfall, please remember to shovel around the fire hydrants near your home. This helps firefighters to locate the hydrants and saves them valuable time on the scene. In the event a fire would break out in your home and the firefighters had to dig out the hydrants in your neighbor-hood, the extra time to uncover these hydrants could possibly cost lives. We ask that you help by making sure the hydrants are easily accessible and uncovered.

From the Desk of Robert E. Maloney, Palos Township Assessor The thirty day period for appealing the reassessment of property came to an end July 28th in Palos Township. Our residents came to the township in record numbers. Using our advanced property track-ing system we were able to complete property as-sessment appeal applications for those residents of Palos Township who took the time and responsibil-ity to file an appeal. Palos Township will again be open this fall to help residents complete property assessment appeal appli-cations to the Board of Review. Newspaper and lo-cal media outlets will be notified so that residents will be informed of the starting and deadline dates.

Township News

Palos Township Clerk Jane Nolan would like to inform residents of the following voting information. Registering to vote in Illinois is very easy. You can register to vote in Illinois all year long except during the 27 days before an election and the two days after the election. The exception to this rule is Chicago where you only have to wait one day after an election. In order to vote you must meet the criteria to register. You must be 18 by Election Day, be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Illinois and live in your voting precinct for 30 days prior to Election Day. You cannot be a convicted felon, serving time, or on parole. You also cannot have been judged mentally in-competent. Two forms of identification are needed when you register to vote in person. One form of identification must show your current residence address. If you register by mail sufficient proof of identity is required by submission of your driver’s license number or state identification card number. If you don’t have either of these, verification by the last 4 digits of your social security number, a copy of a current and valid photo identification, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other governmental document that shows your name and address will be required.

Residents can register to vote at the following places: County Clerk’s Office Board of election commissioner’s Office City and Village Offices Township Offices Precinct Committeemen Schools Public Libraries Military Recruitment Offices Illinois voters may vote early without having to provide a reason or an excuse for wanting to vote early. Registered voters can vote early during the 22nd day through the 5th day preceding an election. Early voting will begin on Monday October 13th, 2008, and will end on Thursday, October 30th, 2008. Voters casting an early ballot must display valid identifica-tion such as a current driver’s license, a state issued ID card or another government issued ID with a photograph. The requirement of photo identification for an early voter is stricter than other identification requirements for people cast-ing a ballot at their polling place on Election Days. The votes cast during the early voting time period will not be counted until Election Day. Important dates to remember: Oct. 7th 2008 Last day to register to vote

Pennies From Heaven We need your donation of pennies to help feed the needy. A Quote from www.ziplo.com/Pennies.html

We all have angels looking over us, no matter how young or old we might be. So the next time you are feeling a little blue, maybe a penny you find laying on the ground,

was tossed down from heaven by an angel, Just for you….. Once you have your penny bring it to the Palos Hills Community Center,

and add to our collection basket for the needy. The pennies will be given to a local food pantry;

the pennies will be used to purchase food for the needy. .
