Term 3 is usually when we hold information sessions and a tour of the facilities for new families. If you have not already enrolled, or know someone who has not yet enrolled at a school, please contract our administration on 4122 2666 to inform Mrs Boulton or Miss Brand of your intentions for enrolling your child at our school for 2022. Knowing the number of prep students attending in 2022 will also support us with staffing and resourcing considerations for the start of the year.

Messages from the Principal

Hello Maryborough West State School community. Welcome to Week 8 of Term 2. It is hard to believe there are only 13 school days remaining before the winter vacation.

Collaborative Assessment of Student Work (CASW) In a recent newsletter I explained the processes our school undertakes to provide students with the greatest possible chance of making academic progress.

One major part of these processes took place last week in the form of Collaborative Assessment of Student Work (CASW). All teachers met in their cohorts with our HOD – Curriculum Mrs S, to present samples of writing for all in attendance to view andprovide feedback and strategies on how best to support the progress of thoseparticular students. During the process the following questions were asked whenviewing each piece of writing –

1. What evidence are we seeing?2. What evidence are we not seeing?3. What is the area of focus/feedback?4. How do we teach this well?

Using these four questions, teachers are able to work together, share teaching ideas and pose “next steps” in student learning which not only benefits our students but the collegial engagement and collaboration amongst each of the teachers is also a very powerful form of Professional Development. The old saying, two heads working together are better than one, definitely rings true with the CASW initiative.

The improvement demonstrated by all students presented was very pleasing. Ruby Walker in 4W is one example of how this process has been of great benefit. Her written piece comparing two different types of breakfast cereals was excellent and resulted in it being read to the entire assembly last week.

Congratulations to all teachers for their efforts when undertaking the CASW initiative. Their positive involvement and commitment has positively impacted the academic progress of all of our students.

Prep 2022 As we approach the half way mark of the 2021 school year, we will soon begin deciding upon the programs and timelines for transitioning our 2022 prep students into the school.

Report Cards Individual student Report Cards will be distributed to parents on Tuesday 22nd June (Week 10). Please take the opportunity to view your child’s progress and discuss them their achievements with them. Remember, an achievement of “C” means your child is achieving to their year level standard, therefore, a “C” is a good result. Discus and High Jump The first round of championship events (9 to 12 years old) will be held this Thursday and Friday. The events will be discus and high jump and each of the age groups will compete at various times throughout the day (each year level expected to take about an hour for each event). Completing these events before our official Sports Day on Friday 18th June will ensure there is enough time to complete all other events. Good luck to all of our students who will be competing for points for their respective Sports Houses over the next two weeks. Disco This Thursday the P&C Association will be holding the first disco for the year. Prep to Year 2 will be held from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and Year 3-6 from 6:45pm-8:00pm. The P&C will be selling a number of items including light refreshments. Please consider sending your child along to the disco so as they can enjoy the fun and excitement that comes with it, but also to support the P&C to raise funds that will then be put back into the school to benefit your children. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the P&C for their commitment to our school and the students. (Next P&C Meeting – 16th June at 1:45pm) Sausage Sizzle Our Student Council will be holding a sausage sizzle this Friday 11th June. All order forms were due back last Friday and from all reports it has been very well supported. The Student Council is an avenue for the students who are a part of it to have a voice within the school and to raise funds for projects they feel are required from their point of view. I would like to express my thanks to Miss Fazio for coordinating the Student Council and for organising the sausage sizzle. Dogs on School Premises A notice was published on Facebook last week asking for the assistance of parents and community members to refrain from bringing dogs onto the school grounds. This decision is to ensure the safety of all people on the school grounds. Should your child wish to bring a dog or any animal to school for Show and Tell this is allowable. All we ask is that you notify the office a day or two before the Show and Tell so a risk assessment can be completed.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with this matter. Russell Hotchin, Principal

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our recent PBL foci have been, “Patience” and “Travel safely to and from school.” Travelling safely anywhere often relies on being in the right place at the right time. Misunderstandings and unpredictable changes in routine at short notice happen to us all and it is important to have a plan in place for when this occurs. Students at our school are told that the safe place to go is the school office when their travel arrangements have not gone as expected. Students who present at the office are in a supervised space and attempts can be made to contact parents and carers. In the recent school assembly presentation on this topic our school captains, Taylee and Dylan, presented some strategies to the students that they could use to keep safe. Among these were the idea of planning your route home considering factors such as safe crossings, potential hazards such as dogs, diving magpies or nesting plovers. Patience is a short word and a simple idea. Waiting your turn, considering the needs of others over your own wants and taking the time required to do something properly are all examples of Patience. The practice of being patient is not defined by age, it is a skill that can be improved by recognising when patience might be required and intentionally applying specific strategies, such as taking a short break, taking a deep breath and considering the different points of view of other persons. Over 13 000 HOOT cards have been presented to students through the term so far. Students are aiming for 15 000 to access the extra play time reward on the last day of term. This system is a way for the school staff to acknowledge the appropriate actions of students as they promote and adhere to our school’s “Faithful Four.” Greg Finn, Deputy Principal

Year 1/2 News It has been a busy term for the students in the 1/ 2 cohort. We still have three weeks to go and lots more to achieve in this short time. Everyday counts and the students will continue to learn new concepts that will help to shape their future. For some classes the assessment process is not finished. We ask that you continue to support your child. Good meals and plenty of rest will help them to be at their best. As the weather cools down please make sure that your child has a named jumper to wear, plenty of healthy snacks in the lunch box and a water bottle to keep them hydrated. This is the time of year that we all have the sniffles and colds. Classrooms are still providing hand sanitiser and we ask everyone to take part in this to keep us all safe.

The school disco is nearly upon us and this will be a welcome break for the students and a chance for them to socialise. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible to boogie the night away. Parents, please remember to send a hat with your child on HPE days. Thank you. Year 1/2 Teachers
