Dear reader understanding

organ donation can make you

feel better about your choice. If

you've delayed your decision to

be a donor because of possibly

inaccurate information, here are

answers to some common myths

and doubts about organ donation.

-Organs Which Can Be Donated.

-Myths and Truths.

-Support Groups.

“ORGAN DONATION”- WHAT

IS IT?

The process or act by which

a person donates organ for the

improvement or saving the life of

others is called organ donation.

WHY I SHOULD DONATE MY

ORGANS

-Number of people who is in need

for organ is increasing worldwide.

-18 people die each day waiting for

an organ.

- Every 12 minutes another name is

added to the national waiting list.

WHEN I CAN’T DONATE MY

ORGANS.

- Cancer

-Uncontrolled sepsis (infection)

-Active viral infections-hepatitis

A and B, herpes simplex virus,

AIDS and rabies.

ORGANS WHICH CAN BE

DONATED

Organs which are shown in

the figure can be donated. This

includes Eyes, lungs, heart, liver,

pancreases, bone, blood vessels,

kidney, intestine, muscles, skin, and

knee joint respectively.

TOP TEN MYTHS &THE TRUTH

1. Myth: Doctors may not try as

hard to save me, if they know I

am an organ donor.

Truth: Organ donation is not

even considered until all possible

efforts to save a person's life

have been failed.

2. Myth: Organ donation is against

my religion.

Truth: All major religions

approve of organ donation and

consider it as an act of charity

3. Myth: There are too many

financial issues involved with

organ donation.

Truth: The donor's family is

never charged for donating.

4. Myth: Organ donation results in

disfigurement of the body.

Truth: Donated organs are

removed surgically in a small

operation. So it does not change

the appearance of the dead body

for the funeral service.

5. Myth: Elderly people are not

candidates for organ donation.

Truth: There is no defined age

limit for donating organs.

6. Myth: I can't donate to someone

unless I am a close family

member of him.

Truth: You can donate an

organ to anyone, but it should

match certain medical criteria

such as blood group.

7. Myth: I’ll be kept alive on

machines for much longer than

I should be, just to keep the

organs healthy.

Truth: Doctors will keep the

donor on life support machines

and takes the organs as early as

possible; the family has the

right to take decision about it.

8. Myth: By signing my organ

donation card or registering,

I don’t have to worry and my

organs will be used if they can

be.

Truth: Unfortunately, some

family members don’t always

feel the same way as the donor

think. So it should be informed

to the family also.

9. Myth: Recipient will behave

like donor.

Truth: Recipient will never get

any characteristics or behavior

of the donor.

10. Myth: Organs are sold and

profit is going to the medical

community.

Truth: The National Organ

Transplant Act (Public Law

98-507) makes it illegal to sell

human organs and punishable

by prison sentences and fines
