Royal ascot pRoves to be a Real winneR!by Rodney Hinds

ROYAL ASCOT on Ladies Day was the place to be on June 20.

There are few sporting venues that can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot and this year’s meeting was no different. Among the thousands of racegoers that attended one of the most important days on the sporting and social calendar, was

the 50-strong party organised by Panache Occasions, BBJ Management Corporation and Blacktie Caterers.

Style and elegance combined for the height of the summer social calendar on Gold Cup Day, colloquially known as ‘Ladies’ Day’. Although the whole week at Royal Ascot is a fashion show like no

other, it is the Thursday when the designer creations and millinery masterpieces reach the greatest heights.

The Ladies Day highlight and feature race was the Group 1 Gold Cup, a battle of stamina and determination over two miles and four furlongs. The Queen, a keen horseracing fan, famously landed

the Gold Cup when her horse – Estimate - stormed to the line.

On the day, however, everyone was a winner as far as Panache Occasions, BBJ Management Corporation and Blacktie Caterers were concerned.

Dreams, dreams, dreams…they do come true when there is ambition, dedication, hard work, family support and most importantly

an opportunity to showcase them. You are never too young to follow your dreams and it seems Portia Cachee Abrah Afua Oti born Friday the 23rd of November 2001, has demonstrated this tremendously well.

At 11, Miss Portia Oti holds the England under 12 Hip-Hop Dance Champion (2012), European under 12 Hip-Hop Champion (2012) titles. To top it up, a GUBA Awards Rising Star nomination in 2012 and a Semi-Finalist on Sky One’s Got to Dance competition.

George Ameyaw is a proactive and idealistic individual.

His passion for creating a better world drew him to the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards.

George began working with GUBA due to their outstanding contribution to the Ghanaian and UK community, as he hopes to ensure that the efforts of unsung

heroes do not go unnoticed.

He is the Head of PR/Marketing/Sponsorship for GUBA Awards.

Portia’s dancing skills ranges from hip-hop, ballet and even to the new dance phenomenon ‘azonto’.

This talented young girl has featured in a number of competitions, theatre productions and national commercials. Performing in front of dignitaries like the Duke of Edinburgh, she has shown that there are no limits to her talents and aspirations.

We at GUBA Awards have been impressed by Portia’s achievements so far and decided to give her a platform to express herself.

Portia’s own words……..

I like to dance because I find it fun. I enjoy being creative and being able to express how I feel. I find it difficult to express myself sometimes but when I am dancing, I feel like I can be who and what the music requires me to be. Dancing allows me to meet new people and make new friends from all over the world. As a result, I have two families, my blood family and my dance family and I love that sense of belonging. I also love the dancing fashion.

When competitions are coming up, I prepare by spending some time listening to some of the new songs that have been released and practise some combinations to beats and I usually have to take a few outfits with me.

Got to Dance was a great experience for me and a brilliant platform because, it has

opened doors for me that I could have only dreamed of prior to the show. The film team were great and I was so proud that I was able to show the UK what I enjoy doing. It was great meeting all the judges and Davina, the whole experience was magical and I felt like a little star! Getting the 3 Gold stars was all I wanted so when I saw the 3 stars light up, I felt like my heart jumped out of my chest, I was so happy that I just cried. I wanted to show my mum and family that all their support was worthwhile and that I will continue to work harder.

I am due to go and defend my title in Amsterdam at the IDO Hip Hop European Championship in June and take part in a number of shows and a summer theatre performance which was organised by Boy Blue Ent (Kenrick Sandy) and ZooNation (Kate Prince), both Olivier Award winning dance companies.

Zoe Jackson from Living The Dream Dance Co. asked me to join them to perform at the Queens Commonwealth Celebrations. This was truly a dream come true and I loved every single minute. The feeling was a bit out of this world almost like I was floating as I couldn’t believe how beautiful the Abbey was, and that I was dancing in front of Royalties like Prince Philip and Prince Charles and other highly acclaimed individuals. What a shame the Queen could not be there though.

My school is very supportive of my performing and if I have to miss school they I get me home work and any extra support I may need on my return. School for me can be challenging at times because of my dyslexia, but with my mum and sister I am doing very well and will continue to focus on my education. Education I believe will also help me to be actively performing in shows, theatre and TV. I would also like to open and run my own dance school. I would want a part of the dance school to focus on children and adults with special needs.

I am also very interested in getting into choreography for shows, music videos and more.

I believe in hard work and I will never let anything hold me back. I try my best to push through the barriers in front of me. I am also launching a clothing range very soon known as HipHopKidz, the first range HipHopGirlz will be out soon, focusing on street/hip-hop/dance attire for young girls.

You have done very well so far. What advice will you give to special children like you who are dyslexic, have sickle cell or autism?

Thank you. I have a good family who help me with everything. I would advise any child who may have some extra needs, not to allow themselves to be labelled and roped in by the definitions of their conditions. They can and will do whatever they want to do!! Persevere in all that you choose to do, don’t accept ‘No’ for an answer and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something for I did it so can you.

Portia Oti has such exceptional talent. Her commitment to her craft is opening many doors for her. We wish talented Portia Oti all the best in her upcoming competitions and performances. We would like to encourage people to continue to support her and her new clothing range to be launched soon.

The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black

Woman? Who first graced our (The Shaw Theatre,

Euston Road) in 1989 with their hitherto unknown

(in this country at least) production of The Diary

of Black Men. The run was an overnight sensation,

and the interest and excitement it generated were

phenomenal. It is with great pleasure that we welcome

them all back for what may turn out to be our (The

Shaw Theatre) swag-song.

The Diary has importance beyond its remarkable

popularity, by concerning itself with fundamental

questions about relationships, and suggesting that

sometimes the best answer is to question; it seeks to

create understanding and in doing so acquires a

universally. it speaks to us all, men and women,

black and white, and offers the hope that together we

can make things better, and that it may be worth

Thank you for your time Simon Thomsett. I must say that we have been around since the 1980’s with Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame etc.. and here we are again in 2013 doing what’s needed to unite the communities. I would like to

start this interview with something you wrote back in 1994 in our then Souvenir Programme:

Thomas Meloncon’s play: “The Diary of Black Men” will be on tour in August 2013 at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

Look out for EXCLUSIVE information on the cast and the director; Russell Andrews of The Stagewalker Group via Panache E-Magazine.

The Klub International Management Company has been working with this production since 1989 and acted as the executive producers when the play previously toured England in 1994 and 2000.

Simon Thomsett soon went onto the Hackney Empire where he was to rebuild the theatre with National Lottery funding before leaving. He then became the Chief Executive Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, Croydon, In your own words, describe your experiences with the theatre production The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman? The great thing about this show is it deals with relationships, real ones and that›s exciting. It has a buzz around it and it’s always a thrill to watch audiences identifying with what’s going on.

Have things changed much in the business from when you started? The basics are the same: tell a good story and people are interested.

Did your family support you going into the theatre business/industry? Yes, I have a lot to thank them for and letting me be whatever I wanted was a great gift.

Do you have any fears in life? For sure: the usual ones.

What does Theatre/The Arts mean to you? They are about the greater things in life; about entertainment, enlightenment, enrichment of the soul. They help us to live; they offer a

vision of possibilities, ways to share visions of integration rather than disintegration; they unite us in a common humanity and show us other worlds; they stimulate the imagination and help us through life’s challenges. I could go on but it’s probably clear that they mean a whole lot to me.

What is one thing your life experiences have taught you, which you would like to teach others? Don’t judge: you’re not perfect either.

When did you first work with The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman? Back around 1989 at the Shaw Theatre in Euston Road.

What do you think of some of the great productions that came out of the theatres you have run? I always get a thrill whenever something touches people; in the theatre it’s always a collaboration, a team effort and it’s very satisfying to see that come together and it can be quite magical when it works.

Who is your current favourite music icon and why? Bob Dylan, has to be. Lifetime’s achievement.

What are your plans for the Year regarding black theatre at The Fairfield Halls?. Help it to grow. All audiences tend to go to places they know and where they feel at home, that›s how I want people of all kinds to feel about Fairfield.

As Americans tend think of Brits as educated theatre audiences and while The Diary is quite entertaining it is also driven by an American social commentary. Do you think that black Brits find themselves in the same positions socially and economically as their American counterparts? I think so; the real differences here are between the major cities and the rest of the country. The great thing about Croydon’s Fairfield Halls is that it is in the middle of a dense and genuinely diverse population. This tends to mean that the younger people take their mixed society for granted, they’re relaxed about it. I’m not sure that’s always true outside the big cities though and I imagine it’s the same over in America.

What advice would you give to young actors/theatre producers trying to get in the Business? Work: ever so hard and don’t give up.

Though the play or chore poem is obviously written from an African American male perspective can these issues be relevant to other cultures too? Certainly, doesn’t matter where you come from, the other sex is a mystery.

Tell everyone what really keeps you inspired with theatre after all these years? There’s always a chance you will touch someone’s soul.

The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman? would now play most of the theatres you have run over the years, why do you think it has stood the test of time?

One thing we all like to talk about is what the other sex is going on about; none of us know. It’s always been that way and I expect it always will be.

Back in 1994 you were the very first European to ever sponsor The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman? Why did you want to sponsor it to close the then Shaw Theatre? It was obvious that the Diary was a phenomenon; I liked the fact that the women bought the tickets and dragged their men along. After about 10 minutes or so the men were yelling out and joining in. They realised it was actually about them.

Given your extensive knowledge and revered body of work in Theatre what gave you the confidence to support the production upon its arrival nearly 25 years ago? It may sound trivial but I heard the radio ad: it was classy, I thought there was a good chance the show would be something special if it could deliver on that ad. Of course, after I actually saw it, I was convinced.

Earlier I mentioned it had been nearly a quarter century since we first landed at The Shaw Theatre, aside from the potential business aspects and the competition for the British entertainment attention, what impact do you think The Diary may have on its “new audience”? I just hope it gets people talking, asking questions, understanding they›re not alone.

A week after the baby was born; I collected mother and child from the Hospital and moved into our new two bedroom

maisonette in West Norwood, South London. We had only got the flat a couple of weeks before the birth, therefore, had had little or no time to do anything with the flat, in terms of buying furniture and stuff.

We had bought a bed and a cot for the baby, we had a cooker and a fridge and that was about it. There was nothing else in the flat apart from our pride and joy, a brand new hi fi center. We had moved into the empty flat when the hi-fi center had been delivered. When we set it up and turned it on it felt like Christmas to us. It seemed as if this was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen. We were sat on the bare floors with our shade less light turned off, listening to “our” HI-FI and we wished the moment would never end. We were in our home! We had bare floors and scarce furniture, but we had boundless possibilities.

We were very fortunate with the location of our dwelling. It was on a quite road which backed on to a small park. The park also incorporated a couple of tennis courts. We used the park as our back garden, although we had a share of the garden we never used it because when we had moved in it had looked like a jungle and neither of us had the inclination to tackle it.

Our home was located in West Norwood, not far from Tulse Hill Train station. So although I had moved away from Brixton, I had not moved far. I was still in walking distance to Brixton and my parents’ home was only about a mile away “as the crow flies”.

A Jamaican Story A serialised story of a

Jamaican boys journey from the hills of Trelawney to the

golden streets of Brixton.

Although I had moved out of my parents’ home, I had not actually articulated the fact to them. My room was still there. I still had my keys and would stop by for dinner some evenings. It was only when my Mum sat me down and asked me how we were coping in our new home that it sank in that this was no longer my home.

I told her about the flat and she asked about what furniture we had and if we needed to decorate. After I answered her questions, she told me that she would pay for carpeting throughout the flat as a moving in present to both of us. I was over the moon, for two reasons. Firstly, I had been wondering how I was going to carpet out the two floors of staircase and the two bedrooms and living room that comprised my new abode. Secondly, both my parents were not that happy with my choice of partner and with the fact that I had fathered a child at such a young age without planning or being married. I thanked her and re-assured her in my naivety that all would be OK and that I knew what I was doing. She told me that she hoped I was right.

Carol my partner was extremely happy when she heard the news, for much the same reasons that I had had. We got a nice three piece settee on HP and when the carpet was down the place looked very chic.

Living together, we seemed to miss a lot of the stresses that young couples with babies complain of. I think this can be attributed to the fact that both our parents were all too

happy to take their grandchild at almost any time we requested. This was fortunate for us because Carol was a singer and would often have to go on tours to far flung places such as Japan and the Caribbean for months at a time.

It was after her return from the first of these tours that I learnt that reggae singers are not always paid in money. She had comeback from a tour of Europe with a very well know reggae singer and I had been anticipating a good payday considering the profile of the headline act. I was not too excited however; as my first experience of the recording industry had not been a good one as far as re-numeration was concerned. Carol had invited me to go with her to a studio session where she would be doing the backing vocals for someone. It had been exciting at first but the excitement wore off around the thirtieth time of hearing the same tune, no matter how good the tune. When the session was over, after eight hours, the producer gave her a cheque for £30. She was so upset, she threw it away.

I asked her how much she had got paid. Carol pointed to a plastic bag amongst her luggage My heart jumped. You need a plastic bag to carry the money! The bag felt heavy when I picked it up and my excitement rose. Inside the bag was another plastic bag, I opened this and saw about 2lb of high grade sensimilla.

Say No to Obesity

Obesity is a growing epidemic affecting people of various ages within the UK and across the world. Research from 2011

shows that 24.8% of adults (16 or over) and 16.3% of children (2 -15) are obese. These numbers are alarming and a definite call for concern especially amongst the younger generation. Obesity is a slow killer and we the youth have to be mindful of its effect. It goes without saying that, it is the number one cause of heart diseases and can also lead to some forms of cancer and diabetes.

So what exactly is obesity and who falls under the range of ‘obese?

Obesity is a term used to describe someone who is very overweight with a high degree of body fat. Anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging from 30-40 is considered obese, a BMI above 25 is considered overweight and a BMI less than 18.5 is considered underweight. Alongside BMI, the size of the waist can also be an indicator of health. Women with a waist of 80cm or greater and men with a waist of 94cm or greater, are more likely to develop obesity-related health problems.

There are many causes of obesity but the main cause is over eating. The recommended daily intake for a woman of average weight

is 2000 calories and 2,500 calories for an average man. Consuming more than these recommended intake means that the excess calories gets stored as fat. Excess fat will overtime, increase the body fat percentage of an individual and their weight as a whole. The choice of food we take in can also have an impact on our body fat. Choosing foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar can increase our waistline, with such excess usually found in junk food. A sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise can also increase the chances of gaining weight.

It is sometimes difficult to track daily intake of calories and to make the right food choices from the options available. There are a number of ways we can make sure that we stay on track.

• Eat six small meals a day- this will help you keep you energised and keep you full for a longer period of time.

• Reach for complex carbs- swap foods like white rice, white bread and pastries for whole grains, brown rice etc.

• Track your calories- you can do so by downloading calorie counting and tracker apps on your phone.

• Snack on fruits and nuts instead of biscuits and crisps

• Exercise! - There are a number of sports activities to get involved in that will keep you fit.

As young people, we owe it to ourselves to be focused on our health. We form the next generation of citizens so it is important that we are fit enough to achieve our dreams and to build our nation. Health is one of the most important aspects of our lives that we can control to an extent, so we must treat it as a priority.

In the words of Buddha - ‘to keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear’

Don’t listen to your friends…listen to your customersBy Julian Hall

Being “customer centric” can be defined as “Creating a positive consumer experience at the point of sale and

post-sale.” A customer-centric approach can add value to a company by enabling it to differentiate itself from competitors who do not offer the same experience.

SO WHAT RIGHT?Well customers are becoming more individualist, more cynical, less civil and increasingly turning from “hunted” to “hunter.” This is just a continuation of consumer empowerment that’s been strengthening for decades and the creation of the almighty “Prosumer”.

SO WHO IS THIS PROSUMER?The term ‘Prosumer’ further defines this new strain of consumer behaviour. According to Wikipedia: “…a Prosumer is “progressive consumer” which emerged during the 2008 recession, and identifies a modern consumer who has changed their approach to the traditional methods and habits of purchasing products. A Prosumer is researching a product’s value, performance, and price through social networks (Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc) and consumer product reviews (such as Amazon.com), before making a final

decision or purchase. Within these websites a Prosumer researches all aspects of a products performance, price and social acceptance in relative comparison to similar products within the same category. The Prosumer is searching for the highest quality product that best meets their personal needs for the minimum amount of money they are willing to spend. Based on that search criteria, the Prosumer is also willing to venture into new shopping distribution channels in order to purchase that product. The Prosumer terminology was initially identified by the Earl Jean brand, where the company recognized a new consumer niche of premium denim consumers who because of the economic downturn desired a high quality, status image, socially acceptable and high performing jeans wear products at value prices.”

SO HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THIS NEW TREND IN CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR?Buyers are being told increasingly to “shop around” and that loyalty is becoming synonymous with naivety. If you read any popular blog about money or household finance there are deals galore for ‘new customers only”. These go a long way to

Send us your comments to: - [email protected]

attracting customers away from their existing relationships’. I’ll give you an example…

BT (British Telecom) Broadband Vs Sky BroadbandI was a long standing customer of BT, for almost 10 years in fact , until one day I decided to look at my broadband bill which I normally paid by direct debit to see exactly what was going on; I wasn’t happy. I called BT to try and negotiate a better deal but they weren’t budging. A few days later I saw an advert on the London Underground for Sky Broadband. They were offering 6 months free to new customers! How could I refuse?! So before you could say 20 mega bit download I was quickly on my way to becoming a Sky Broadband customer.

One of the reasons I moved aside from the offer of 6 months free was because at peak hours BT would slow down my internet speeds at 6pm sharp. They said this happens because it’s the time when broadband is being used the most across the UK and they’re simply sharing the bandwidth. That being the case I still wasn’t at all happy about it but didn’t grumble because I thought I was the only one who had a bug bear over this issue. But I was wrong, because a central message in the Sky advert for their broadband promised that they would not

reduce your speeds during peak times – brilliant! Now this is testament to Sky’s consumer centric approach. By carefully analysing customer feedback they realised that 100’s of ‘000’s of BT customers were unhappy with slower speeds during peak hours.

I wondered if BT would respond to this market challenge and funnily enough about 2 months later they too offered a 6 month free deal with no bandwidth restrictions at peak times! But, It would have been too late for their previous customers to move back as they would now have been in a 12 month contract with Sky broadband. Or – were BT simply trying to snag some of Sky’s old customers…who knows!

WHO IS WINNING?The point is that throughout this process the customer, me, wins each time. An entrepreneur or business owner in today’s market your customer has to feel like they’re winning. So when Monday morning rolls around, listen a little more keenly to your customers; because if you don’t, they might just start listening to your competition.

Everyone’s talking about beach fitness. From women to men, everyone wants to look good when they’re lying out or

hanging out in the water. But to get your body in bikini or swim trunk shape, you need to find exercises that really work and help you with getting in shape. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, however, you can succeed at beach fitness. Here are the toning tools and fitness tips you need.

HEALTH:Summer holiday season isn’t far away and it will shortly be time for swimming trunks, sarongs and bikinis to emerge from their hibernation. If the thought of baring your body on the beach fills you with dread then now is the time to focus on really getting in shape. Don’t put it off… start today and you will soon be shedding those layers of clothing with confidence. With the break from your normal routine plus the lure of ice creams and calorific cocktails, summer holidays are notorious for overindulgence. However, you don’t need to let your health and fitness goals suffer; it is possible to enjoy a healthy summer holiday if you follow a few simple principles.

Stay in shape on holiday:

Body Fitness

Stay in shape on holiday:EXERCISE:Interval training is one of the most effective ways to burn fat. Try exercising at your normal pace for several minutes, then briefly at a faster pace, before slowing down to your normal pace again. Slowly build up these intervals so that with each high intensity burst you’re working harder than the one before. Our bodies are quick to adapt to exercise and if you work hard you should see a reduction in body fat within 4 weeks. When you find yourself in an interesting place with beautiful weather, try to soak it up whilst doing activities that help to burn those extra calories. Sand provides greater resistance than a grass or concrete surface, so you’ll get a harder workout on the beach than at home. Even playing beach ball or going for a brisk walk on the sand will help keep you in shape and prevent you from undoing all your hard work

NUTRITION:To achieve a noticeable difference in your body shape (without resorting to dangerous fad diets), try focusing your meals around appetite-suppressing protein and filling high-fibre vegetables.

You will naturally feel fuller for longer, helping you to resist calorific snacks between meals and lose weight sensibly and effectively. Food available at airports, service stations and ferry terminals is likely to be high in salt, sugar or fat. To avoid falling into the fast-food trap when travelling, get organized and take your own snacks, sandwiches and fruit for the journey. Vegetable crudités (such as chopped carrots, cucumber, baby sweet corn and mange tout) and a pot of hummus makes a healthy, portable snack when you’re on the move.

5 Whole Food Snacks in Under

10minsOne of the common misconceptions about eating wholesome natural foods is that it’s really time consuming.

Firstly, bear in mind that our skewed idea of how long it should take to make food is based on the fact that you can now make a whole meal in 10 minutes in the microwave, or make a 2 min phone call and 30minutes later you got a meal (usually junk food) delivered to your door. Even when we think we’re making a home cooked meal, we’ll still use pre made sauces, pre cooked rice, pre chopped veggies and pre made mixed seasoning (like the dreaded All Purpose Seasoning loaded with MSG).

So when you suggest that, heaven forbid, you do something that takes longer than grabbing a pack of crisps, a chocolate bar or a handful of biscuits, it might be met with a look of disbelief.

But if you want to ditch the “it takes too long” excuse, do something that will benefit your health remarkably (less processed chemical laden foods, more life giving energy rich foods) and start adding some quick yummy snacks to your diet, then read on:

Humus and CruditesGrab a stick of celery, 1/4 of a cucumber and a few baby plum tomatoes, wash and chop the celery and cucumber into stick and half the tomatos, then dunk them in some homemade humus or a good quality (preferably organic) store bought one.

Cheesy AvocadoI got this idea from a good sister of mine, thanks Shamiprayah. Slice a whole avocado, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and half a teaspoon of nutritional yeast which gives the cheesy flavour (you find this in most good health food stores).

Left Over BoatsAs the name suggests, this snack makes use of left overs, in particular, roast or baked fish, chicken, meat, beans or lentils. Wash 1-2 whole romaine lettuce leaves or spring greens (collard greens) leaves, lay them on a plate and fill with your left overs. You could roll them into a wrap or even use nori sheets (sourced from Ireland to avoid the radiation risk)

Easy nut sweetsIn a food processor, add 1 cup of raw almonds (well not obviously roasted and salted at least), ½ cup of dates, a pinch of sea salt and 1 tbsp of coconut oil (optional). Process on full power for 30sec, open and move the mixture round, close and process for another 30 seconds. Take the mixture out, roll it into balls or shape into bars and enjoy

Send us your comments to: - [email protected]

Steamed VeggiesThis actually works wells as part of a breakfast too. Get some veggies like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and sweetcorn on the cob, wash and chop them, place in a pan of boiling water for 5 mins, drain them, drizzle with olive oil and a dash of tamari or crystal salt and munch away, You could also steam tem for 5 mins.

By the way, I’ve tried, tested and timed how long it takes to make all of these meals, from entering the kitchen, to leaving with my plate and they truly take less than ten minutes (as long as you’re not moving as slow as molasses on Christmas day!)

I have 5 children, run a business part time, freelance part time, do volunteer work, homeschool and look after my house. If there is one thing I’ve learned to do, it’s make quick meals and with somewhat fussy children, I’ve learnt how to make them taste good too.

Take care, stay healthy and speak to you soon.

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’ (Matthews 21:12-13 NIV)

When Jesus, the Passover Lamb of God came into Jerusalem on the tenth day of Nissan, the Passover month, He didn’t stop to heal the sick, cleanse lepers, teach Scriptures, or preach sermon. His eyes were fixed on the temple as his eyes are still fixed today. Lest we forget, we are the temples. (2Corinthians 6:16)

There was a fire in His eyes and fierce Holiness about His presence. John said, “His eyes were like a blazing fire” (Revelation 1:12-16). He does not even hear the hosannas and volumes of songs filling the air. Imagine the thoughts of His heart “Away with the noise of your songs. I will not listen to the music of your harps” (Amos 5:23). HIS EYES WERE FIXED ON THE TEMPLE. He was grieved. Some of the Elders of Israel (the Church) have “set up idols in their hearts” (the temple) (Ezekiel 14:3).

The House of God was turned into business centre for buyers, sellers and moneychangers and those selling doves (Doves speaks of the Holy Spirit) Jesus was grieved that HIS HOUSE OF PRAYER has been made a robber’s den. HOW? After committing all sorts of atrocities, the people of God came before Him “in His House” (Jeremiah 7:9-10). Hypocrisy indeed.

When Jesus entered the Temple as He is entering today with His “whip” of UNADULTERATED WORD, there was panic. He drove away buyers, sellers and moneychangers and overturned their tables. Sellers are those who merchandise Jesus for selfish gains. They preach Jesus but seek their own kingdom, promoting personal goals. They have sufficient scriptures to cover up their Babylonian schemes. Buyers are the deluded poor souls that follow sellers.

Today with the same “whip” of UNADULTERATED WORD in the hand of Jesus, the age long mass deceit, clever selfish schemes are coming under God’s judgment. This is temple-cleansing hour. False prophets, “who dress the wounds of my people as though it were not serious; peace, peace they say, when there is no peace” will now be cast out. “Those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her, when there was no peace will be laid bare” (Ezekiel 13:10-22)

The whip” of UNADULTERATED WORD is causing panic today. Religious lords are upset. Many Christians do not want to hear the unadulterated Word of God. Instead, they are interested in those preachers and their preaching that make them feel good but does not bring out any godly change in their lifestyles. (2Timothy 3:1-17; 2Timothy 4:1-4)

For the “remnants” I urge you to resist every temptation to compromise your faith and God’s standard. Let us resist every attempt to encroach on God’s laid down standard by the worldly system and standard. We will not let down our guards; we will not lower the standard even when we are under pressure in these times of uncertainty. REMEMBER THAT TIMES MAY HAVE CHANGED BUT GOD HASN’T (Malachi 3:6)

Last WordTo enjoy all the benefits provided by the our Lord Jesus, you need to accept the sacrifice he made for you and enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I would therefore, like to invite you to do so now by praying this simple prayer.

“Lord Jesus, I need you. Please forgive me for all I have done wrong. Please come into my life and begin to lead me. I pray this as sincerely as I know how. Amen”

If you have prayed this prayer, you are now born again. Congratulations!

I will like to hear from you. Please contact me and let me know of your decision. I have a free gift for you to help you begin your new life in Jesus.

‘If you think I’m gay, then fine’

Jamaican comedy star Shebada on gay rumours, negative press and why he’s happy to have people talking about him

HE’S ONE of Jamaica’s most talked about comedians – and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Heading to the UK next week to star in the new production Krosses, Keith Ramsey, better known as Shebada, is famed for his razor sharp wit and side-splitting comedy delivery.

But while his on-stage persona is often outlandish and raucous, the man behind the one-liners is far more subdued. Asked what he believes to be the secret to his success so far, the softly-spoken comedian and actor says: “Just being myself. I can’t put it down to anything else.”Having starred in productions including Bashment Granny and Shebada Comes to Town, the fast-rising funnyman has won a

legion of fans, both in Jamaica and beyond.

But he’s also courted plenty of controversy along the way, due to ongoing rumours about his sexuality.

Consistently refusing to confirm or deny persistent rumours that he is gay, Ramsey believes there’s no point in spoiling the fun of letting people speculate.

“People can say whatever they want,” he says. “I wouldn’t mind getting up tomorrow morning and hearing there was another rumour about Shebada. That’s fine by me.

“Whether I wanna be straight, gay or bi, that’s my business. That’s what I always tell people. If you think that I’m gay, then fine, I’m gonna

Interview by: Davina Hamilton of The Voice Newspaper

be gay for you. If you think that I’m straight, I’m gonna be straight for you. This is my life. These are the questions that peak people’s interest so, let them keep peaking people’s interest. I like it like that.”

He adds: “I like to keep people puzzled. There’s no challenge if I put everything on the table so you can know everything about me.”

With Jamaica’s widely known reputation as an anti-gay country, it might be assumed that Ramsey is worried about the potential backlash of even being thought to be gay. But he insists that has never been the case.

LATEST CHARACTER: Ramsey will star in the upcoming play Krosses

“I’ve not been fearful yet,” he calmly retorts. “The people who are against my style, my attitude, my character and my style of acting, they’re the ones paying their money to come and see me; to see what I have to offer. So any negativity doesn’t bother me.”

And despite some of the anti-gay insults that

have been leveled against him by bloggers online, ask the Kingston-born comic to name the worst thing that has been said about him, and his response is as sharp as his comic wit:

“Honestly – it has not been said yet.”

Aside from the negativity, there has been plenty of praise for Ramsey, whose other credits include Like Father, Like Son and Di Driva. His stint in the hugely popular Bashment Granny earned him huge acclaim, most notably from The Gleaner, which reported on his character: “James 'Shebada' Bones, flamboyantly depicted by a multi-talented Keith Ramsey, is the pulsing heart of the show.”

Now gearing up for his upcoming UK appearances in Krosses, the comedy drama by Jamaican writer Michael Denton, will see Ramsey playing chef and local gossip Lashie. Together with village drunk Tippo (Maxwell ‘Bashy’ Grant), the pair are the kings of gossip – and nothing remains a secret when they get hold of it.

“This show is completely different to anything I’ve done before,” says Ramsey, who is also working on music to be released in the future. “People haven’t seen this character before so people will see me in a different light.”

His final message to his UK fans: “Come out and have fun with Shebada!”

Krosses is at the following venues: July 13 and 14: Broadway Theatre, Catford – visit www.broadwaytheatre.org.uk July 19: Trinity Sports Centre, Manchester – visit www.trinitysportscentre.com July 20: Royale Palace, Birmingham – visit www.theroyalesuite.co.uk July 26: UK Centre for Carnival Arts, Luton – visit www.carnivalarts.org.uk July 27 and 28: Hackney Empire, London – visit www.hackneyempire.co.uk

BASHIYRA ‘The Voice’

THIS ARTIST IS GIFTED WITH THE SENSATIONAL BREATH OF SONG AND

MUSIC.

Soulful, mesmerising and smooth are just a few of the words that describe her inimitable voice. With a repertoire that

spans reggae, soulful house, neo-soul and jazz, BASHIYRA has an ability to captivate, move and entertain diverse audiences.

Her appointment as a live performer for the ‘London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony’ in August 2012 and the subsequent personal thank you letter from Mr David Cameron, UK Prime Minister is further evidence of the authentic creative credence, this talented woman conveys.

2009 saw the release of her refreshing debut, “Thought You Knew”, a balanced mix of neo-soul, jazz and dance harnessed by her rich, soulful and emotive voice. This successful self-release led to BASHIYRA receiving The

Soul Baby Live Award 2011. In the same year, Black Women in the Arts awarded BASHIYRA The Nina Simone Award for her outstanding work in the area of jazz.

Black Women In The Arts (BWA) was established in November 1995 by female artistes; having an intention to support and promote the artistic endeavours of female artists from the African and African Caribbean communities. In association with The Dalston People’s Festival an initiative of Hackney Unites http://www.hackneyunites.org.uk a festival for the diverse people and communities of Dalston.

We will witness a vision that is rapidly taking shape; the conceptualisation, that there will be a bringing together of communities through, music, arts, and fun….. This will break down some barriers and begin to explore what ‘the people’ have in common, and how our neighbourhoods can be improved and have peace and progression for all.

Black Women In The Arts (BWA) has invited the soulful voice of BASHIYRA to utilise a creative opportunity extended upon them within the dynamic framework of The Dalston People’s Festival.

With the release of her sophomore album ‘Independent’ and a new EP being imminent this year, BASHIYRA established this platform to perform new songs via an acoustic based pre-launch, setting the tone for the full orchestral launch later this year. ‘Independent’, is sure to deliver more chart-climbers and accolades produced by Herb Middleton where BASHIYRA will write with Crystal Johnston (who has written for Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Hamilton and Angie Stone) and Richard Rudolph (who co-wrote the Minnie Riperton classic Lovin’ You).

At the acoustic pre-launch listeners can witness for the first time new unheard material taken directly from the new album and EP ahead of its official full release.

BASHIYRA will be joined by Wayne Brown on piano (Earth Wind and Fire/Ruby Turner) with guest support via Onita Boone, a New York native and Germany based singer who is also the 2012 recipient of “The Winner Is”, Germany’s equivalent to Britain’s X-Factor, where she won a cheque for a million pounds via a deal with Universal Records.

From the UK will be Xenia (a voice student of BASHIYRA) who will make her first formal singing appearance. However Xenia is no stranger to the stage, being a dancer by first profession who is the team captain of the England Dance Squad and the musical theatre troupe.

July 15th 2013 is an exclusive event taking place at The Vortex Jazz Club, based right in the heart and soul of The Dalston People’s Festival, which will take place over a week from July 13th to 20th; showing BASHIYRA’s support of the arts and its influence in bringing unity to the community. A unique event to be experienced and enjoyed by one and all.

USA Herb Middleton (Producer to Mary J Blige/Teddy Pendergrass/Faith Evans/Usher) “BASHIYRA has the vocal power of a lion with the sweetness of a canary, a true rare find! The Voice is The Voice”....

Levi Roots, Dragon’s Den Winner and creator of ‘Reggae Reggae Sauce’ “It is an absolute pleasure to be supporting such a fantastic home –grown talent that is BASHIYRA!”

DJ Elayne Smith, Presenter, Colourful Radio.com

“BASHIYRA has the X Factor, she’s an all-rounder. Looks good, sounds great with uplifting lyrics to boot she is truly a beautiful person inside and out!”

Having performed backing vocals for music industry heavyweights such as Patti Labelle, Michael Bolton, Diana Ross and Queen, world record holder, multiple award winner and Independent Singer and Songwriter BASHIYRA brings a wealth of captivating artistry to the industry.

DREDDY TENNIS

Wait, there’s a Jamaica Tennis Association? I was totally not aware of this.

I can only assume that unless you have played tennis in Jamaica, this was also recent news to you, after its first notable alum in 30 years Dustin Brown dramatically defeated former champion Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon.

The dreadlocks-sporting 28-year-old was born in West Germany, but he grew up and learned to play tennis in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

So why does he represent Germany? Well, the fact that I could barely even find the JTA on a Google search is indicative of his reasons - Brown played under the flag of Jamaica until 2010, when he left because of a lack of funding.

Considering that he had toured European tournaments in a camper van for eight years while his counterparts were being put up in comfortable hotels, and observing that 13 years into the 21st century Jamaican tennis still has basically no online presence, this seems like a totally understandable decision to further his career, and it has clearly paid off.

Brown smashed the experienced Australian off the court with a flamboyant display of tennis, dropping

only one set. He said in an interview afterwards that he believed he could win, and it showed on the court. In a year of upsets in South West London (Nadal and Federer were both out by the second round) there was no reason for him not to.

Speaking as someone who used to play tennis, and stopped when it clashed with football, I think it is very satisfying to see another role model emerge in the sport for our black community.

Tennis is a sport which, like golf, suffers from a perception of being quite elitist in terms of access. The vast majority of players on the tour are white European or North American, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils and the Williams sisters being the only high profile exceptions one could think of. But with his long dreads, cavalier style of play, and Caribbean drawl, there is something more relatable and charming about Brown.

I hope he can convert the increased attention and support focused on him (his Twitter following at @dreddytennis more than doubled after his victory over Hewitt) into further success, so that we can have someone to cheer on at tennis tournaments in the same way we do for athletics. However, it’s a shame that the Jamaican Tennis Association missed out on the opportunity to make him

a worldwide symbol of Jamaican Tennis in a similar way to what Usain Bolt has become for athletics. After all, what does it say that the country’s first high profile player since Doug Burke in the 80’s had to switch allegiances to Germany before he made an impression on the world stage?

Still no Premier League. My weekends are spent pessimistically and skeptically scanning transfer rumours. Zaha to United? Nice. Kolo Toure to Liverpool? Nice. I guess there is some other sport on somewhere...

REGGAE FLOPZA little while ago I wrote about the potential of seeing a Caribbean side at next year’s FIFA World Cup. Jamaica had just reached the final qualifying stage in comfortable fashion, beating the United States along the way, and things were looking rosy. I believe I even used the phrase “best chance since 98”.

Well, don’t I look rather foolish now? Despite a promising start to the hexagonal round, things have gone decidedly pear-shaped. They began by holding Mexico to a draw in the Azteca where they threatened to score several times and defended solidly.

However in the following five games, Jamaica have lost four times, and scored only once - a 90th minute equaliser by Jermaine Beckford at home against the USA, which was then immediately and frustratingly negated by another American goal at the other end. Costa Rica, Honduras, USA, and Mexico in the return leg, have all beaten the Reggae Boyz

comfortably, to which end coach and former star player Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore has resigned (ie: jumped before being pushed).

With 4 games remaining and just two measly points, things do not look positive. However it’s still possible, if the team can remember how to kick the ball past the man with gloves into the big rectangle with the net thing on it (I always say football is a simple sport). The top 3 teams of the 6 will qualify automatically, while the fourth placed team will face a play off against New Zealand, who have already won the practically irrelevant Oceania region.

One man who knows how to find the rectangular net is Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson - the 34-year-old Waterhouse striker has finished top scorer in Jamaica’s Red Stripe Premier league for two years running. Whitmore’s administration has seemed more interested in drawing on British based talent from the island’s sprawling diaspora, but surely a team with 1 goal in 6 matches can’t afford to ignore a player like this?

The campaign kicks off again in the September international break. If the Reggae Boyz can pull off at least two wins and two draws from their last four games (two of which are at home), and finish on 10 points, then they could still be in with a shot. This would require Panama and Honduras, or potentially even Mexico, to lose or draw all their remaining games, so it’s a small chance. But a chance all the same.

SUPER EAGLESAlso, some non-Jamaican news, as African Cup of Nations champions Nigeria travelled to Brazil for the Confederations Cup, also known as the ‘Festival of Champions’ or more modestly as the warm up to the World Cup.

The Confederations Cup consists of the upcoming World Cup hosts (Brazil), the current World Cup champions (Spain) and the champions of each of the continental competitions (Nigeria, Uruguay, Mexico, Japan, Tahiti, and Spain again - so runners up Italy were invited).

The Super Eagles arguably had an easier start than anyone, as their first group game was against the world number 138-ranked team Tahiti, who had stated their only mission in the tournament was to score just one goal. Nigeria won 6-1, however, a couple of concerning symptoms were disguised behind the comfortable scoreline.

Firstly, although they scored 6 times, Nigeria were alarmingly wasteful in front of goal. Admittedly, the players were probably not playing with 100% effort, but time after time their strikers broke through on goal and then overplayed the chance, trying to dribble around the keeper or score a more spectacular goal than was necessary.

It’s easy to say that they wouldn’t have done this in a ‘proper’ match, but this was the first game of a big tournament for Nigeria’s young side and they should have taken it more seriously.

The second was the fact that Tahiti scored a goal - I would be the first to congratulate them on their sterling efforts in the tournament, but the fact is they are a team of amateur players from a tiny holiday destination in the Pacific, and there is no way Nigeria should have been letting them anywhere near the goal. Instead Jonathan Tehau was allowed to score an admittedly impressive header from a corner, and he should really have converted another clear chance late in the game.

This defensive naivety was shown up by Uruguay in game number two, in what was otherwise a well balanced and hotly contested game, as an error at the back led to Uruguay’s first goal.

However, I still have high hopes for this Nigeria side, despite their failure to get past the group stage at this tournament. It’s a young side - the average age of the XI that faced Uruguay was 24 - and especially at the back, young players do make mistakes occasionally.

But players like Victor Wanyama and Efe Ambrose are only going to improve over the next year, and Nigeria should arrive in Brazil next year ready to make an impression. Keep an eye on them.
