Cool kids mill about the venue, inside and out, smoking. People talk about trips to Amsterdam, when they last saw Animal Collective at the Coronet. One dude in particular, is surprised by the amount of people attending the gig. Well, it appears word about Panda Bear has spread (after four albums and a career dating back to the late 90s). Noah Lennox also has not played in the UK for the last three years and this is his only date in the United Kingdom. The venue is filled, milling from the general admission floor to the balconies. At first when Panda comes on stage, everyone’s a little syrprised. He test his microphone, sequencer and the larger myriad of cables plugged into a monolithic box atop a table. He walks away. When he comes back on for real, he delivers a welcome greeting, short and seemingly forced. He starts off the set with the new single “Boys Latin”, chugging rhythm and a bouncing Technicolour falsetto weave in and out, spell-binding, repititive. The audience is charmed, heads bobbing. He goes on to introdude other ance-y cutes from his new LP “Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper” like personal fave “Come to Your Senses” and “Selish Gene”. And does he meet him here. The creepy as heck accompanying visuals that incorporate sci-fi porn and revolting gifs of sqelched fruit, and strobe lights sharp and sudden. In a magnificent sequence, he takes the refrain “are you mad?” and swivels into harp ballad “Tropic of Cancer”. Rapt attention is given, red hues staining faces.
