• PANDEMIC - When a disease causing serious illness spreads around the world and affects a large amount of people.

• EPIDEMIC – spreads rapidly and extensively within a given area

• ENDEMIC – prevalent to a particular locality or people

• 1) Little/No immunity in humans,

• 2) Spreads quickly and easily from person to person world wide,

• And

• 3) Causes serious illness or death

Seasonal vs Swine Flu

• Season Flu• Respiratory illness

• Vaccine available• < 2K die in NC yearly

• Flu occurs naturally in waterfowl and pigs

• H1N1 Swine; Xmtd by pigs to humans.

• Pigs serve as mixer for avian and human

• No immunity• No vaccine

Precautions

• Avoid sick people• Practice good handwashing• Sneeze or cough into your elbow• If you have fever (100 or higher), sudden onset

of symptoms, generalize aches and pain, generally feel worse than a cold, see your physician.

• You could have regular seasonal flu, but still could be treated with Tamiflu or Relenza, reducing severity of flu

• Live in a bubble
