Important Challenges !  Effective Data Sharing (Open Access) is not just Discoverability and Downloadability, it also

about (re)usability, citability, re-interpretation, and reproducibility

!  Effective Multidisciplinarity is about information and knowledge sharing, rather than data exchange;

!  Reliable Cross-organizations: managing both authoritative and non-authoritative resources (e.g. Citizen Science, Crowdsourcing)

!  True Scalability: addressing the Big Data challenges along all the “V” axes

!  Secure Consumerization (a service-oriented economy): BYOD and BYOA

!  Operational Sustainability including: the ability to adapt to scientific and technological innovation; education and outreach; financial stability; building on present and next-future infrastructures and systems

!  Real International collaboration: crossfertilisation with other disciplines, regions, cultures and economic systems

!  Genuine Trustworthiness: (scientific) resources sharing requires trust. Sharing is a human behavior, and happens under the right conditions

A first-class science

! Infrastructures and Systems interoperability provides the foundation for the Science 2.0 (Big Science)

!  It must be acknowledged and ranked alongside other major disciplines

Some on-going programmes

!  GEO, RDA and EarthCube to set the frame for your presentations.

!  RDA, GEO, ODIP, COOPEUS and Regional initiatives such as EarthCube and the Oceans 2013.2 projects have provided support and collaboration environments to advance interoperability.

!  Cyndy: BCO-DMO, EarthCube, ESIP, RDA and ODIP efforts to improve interoperability.

!  Jilles: AtlantOS ??; Medina, Bonus, IAOOS, + issues of citizen obs, and new technologies for marine sensors

!  Dawn: industry perspective on interop particularly via OGC protocols, and mentioning also Esri’s continuing MOU with GEOSS, and our involvement in EarthCube, ESIP, and hopefully in the future with RDA and ODIP.
