2012 President’s Letter

We have so much to be grateful for in the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD)!

Sandpoint High School has scored the top SAT test results in the state compared to other high

schools of its size. Huge! Clark Fork High School has, for the fifth consecutive year, gained

national recognition as one of the best public schools of its size in the nation. Really huge!

Our high schools had more students heading to higher education after graduation than

ever. Amazing! These results are particularly remarkable considering the statewide cuts in

education spending over the last several years.

Who is to thank for these accomplishments? We all are! We are blessed with an

exceptionally involved school board, an engaged administration, and bright and motivated

faculties. Our elementary and middle schools are doing a great job of preparing their

students for high school. Parents are committed to the education of our children. READY!

for Kindergarten continues to show growth and results, judging by improved

reading levels of children entering kindergarten and first grade. Teachers who

have received grants from Panhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE) are able

to become even more “entrepreneurial” in their teaching – a quality students

respond to in a positive manner. PAFE has spent more than $1 million over the

past 10 years on grants to our teachers and programs for our district.

This community support and involvement is critical to the success and

progress of the LPOSD, and we are very grateful for your support. Your PAFE

board of directors as well as staff and volunteers take this support very seriously.

We are constantly working with the district to identify projects and ideas where

PAFE can provide support. We are not just sustaining, we are growing.

Please remember PAFE with your valuable financial support!

Citizens, businesses and educators building an independent, community-based foundation for public schools.

Mission sTATEMEnTOur mission is to promote excellence in education and broad-based community support for the Lake Pend Oreille School District. As an independent organization, we will create and sustain an endowment to provide resources in support of effective teaching, learning and school management.

Betty Ann Diehl 1925-2010

In 2003, Betty Ann Diehl created an endowment with the Idaho Community Foundation (ICF) and designated Panhandle Alliance for Education as adviser to ICF on grant awards. She directed that projects support music and/or arts education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Betty Ann Diehl grew up in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1943. She left the area with her husband, Stan, while he ran the family lumber company. They returned in 1972.

Her gift is a lasting legacy to the students and teachers of the community she loved.

Deborah

McShane

LOVES

the theater and

wants students

to love it, too.

She has directed

many community

productions at the

Panida Theater,

most recently

“Music Man.” As a Sandpoint Middle School

English teacher, she knows that seventh- and

eighth-graders are prime for developing an ear for

Shakespeare and for appreciating the bard’s wit

and wisdom.

Why not bring Shakespearean Theater into

the school? The Idaho Shakespeare Festival has a

program to do just that. Using the Betty Ann Diehl

Award for the Arts from Panhandle Alliance for

Education, she invited the festival’s traveling troupe

to perform at the Sandpoint Middle School. It was

a perfect fit. Dynamic young performers are chosen

for the traveling troupe, and they know how to en-

gage students. At the close of each performance,

the actors host an Afterword, a time to field ques-

tions from students and staff.

Weeks before the troupe arrived in Sandpoint

eight language arts and social studies teachers

worked with 500 students to learn the culture, his-

tory and vocabulary of the Elizabethan era. They

also studied Shakespearean characters and drama.

But “the play is the thing.” When the troupe

arrived the students were ready for the antics, the

poetry, the history, the characters – The Play.

Laurie and Dave Wall The Dave and Laurie Wall Award for math and science education was initiated in 2006, thanks to a legacy gift from the Sandpoint residents. The Walls funded an endowment managed by the Idaho Community Foundation (ICF). At their request it provides for an annual grant of approximately $5,000 to support math and science education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Panhandle Alliance is designated to select projects for ICF. The Dave and Laurie Wall Award for Math and Science funded “Hands-on Science.”

Who says

science is

boring? Not stu-

dents at North-

side Elementary.

“At North-

side, we have

a deep com-

mitment to the

development of

science-minded

students,” says Principal Perky Smith-Hagadone.

Hagadone, a former middle school science

teacher, used a PAFE grant to retool science

curriculum for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders. She

collaborated with teachers to develop the new

approach that has 90 students applying math, art

and literacy skills in hands-on science classes.

It’s a hit at Northside and soon may be used

throughout the district. Smith-Hagadone presented

the curriculum to the LPOSD Board of Trustees as a

first step in getting other schools involved.

Community ConnectionsEngaging the community and local businesses in grants, education and teacher support is a winning combination for all. Marilyn Sabella, owner of Eve’s Leaves, used Bonner County Cut-Outs and said, “It is good for my business, and it is good for the students who learn from their fledgling business experience.”

But most of all, she said: “I want to support what the Panhandle Alliance for Education is doing for our schools and our community. It is important work, and I have been here long enough to really appreciate what a big difference PAFE is making.”

Entrepre-

neur-

ship is

alive and well at

Clark Fork High

School. With the

help of teacher

Brian Powell and

a PAFE grant, stu-

dents there have

a startup, school-

based, online business: Bonner County Cut-Outs.

Cut-Outs is an online coupon store serving

retail and service businesses in Bonner County.

Creation of the business required a wide range of

skills, including technology, sales, marketing, prod-

uct development, pricing strategies and manage-

ment. Students are responsible for all of it.

To understand how it works, go online to

www.bonnercountycut-outs.com. You’ll see many

familiar local businesses. Print the desired coupon,

or use a hand held digital device to copy it, and off

you go to the store.

Student entrepreneurs have attended confer-

ences to showcase this unique business, as well as

their newly acquired presentation skills.

Coldwater Creek Charity Golf Tournament This annual fundraiser has been a hallmark event for nearly a decade, raising money that has enabled PAFE to create an endowment to assure future funds for local public schools.

Going forward, a few changes will be incorporated, including a new name, Panhandle Alliance Golf Tournament, and an additional business partner. Sandpoint’s homegrown food producer, Litehouse Foods, will join Coldwater Creek as a sponsor, hosting the Friday events. Other businesses are invited to join the fun – and fundraising – by sponsoring teams and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course.

Teacher Grants. These annual grants are award-ed district-wide to teachers and principals who seek support for educational projects, supplies or equipment not otherwise funded. Grant requests are judged for innovation, creativity, collaboration and impact on student learning.

RESULTS: Since 2003, 388 grants have been awarded, totaling a direct investment in our class-rooms of more than $1 million.

Reading. PAFE funds the CORE Reading Program, providing training for teachers of grades K-12 on state-of-the-art methodology to improve reading, writing and language arts instruction.

RESULTS: Through a cumulative investment of $435,000, the Lake Pend Oreille School District has dramatically improved reading scores, from the low 80 percent range to near universal proficiency. In 2009 the district achieved its goal of 98 percent proficiency on ISAT testing in eighth-grade reading.

READY! for Kindergarten. In our district and nationwide, 44 percent of children entering kinder-garten test below proficiency for learning readiness – and data verifies that children who start behind, stay behind. The READY! program provides parents of children up to 5 years old with instruction, books and educational toys to help their children achieve success at the very start.

RESULTS: After four years of the READY! for

Kindergarten program, 90 percent of children in the program now enter school testing at or above readiness levels.

Career and College Guidance. PAFE provides support for a district counselor to help high school seniors develop a career plan, with assistance in the college application process, SAT and ACT test-ing, financial aid, scholarships, and more.

RESULTS: A three-year investment of $168,000 has radically boosted post-secondary attendance by district graduates; in 2011, 78 percent were accepted to college or technical schools.

Professional Volunteer Coordinator. Through a partnership with the Equinox Foundation, PAFE helped provide a district volunteer coordinator to capitalize on community volunteer talent and man-power and offset staffing lost through budget cuts.

RESULTS: In the 2011-12 academic year, 52 volun-teers assisted 48 teachers on a regular basis, ac-counting for more than 8,400 hours of volunteer time in classrooms of all 12 district schools.

If it’s the last Saturday in July, the Summer Sunset Gala is happening on the lake!Every year a generous friend of PAFE with a spacious lakefront setting offers to host the gala, an enchanted evening of food and fellowship, artists and educators. Attendees learn the PAFE story and give generously.

READY! for Kindergarten

Remember the date — last Saturday in July —

and join in the fun to support our kids and their teachers.

EndowmentThe PAFE Board of Directors is committed to helping future generations of Lake Pend Oreille School District students. We know the need for funding educational programs will continue long after our time here.

To address this commitment, PAFE funds endowments with two established independent community foundations. These endowments are expected to become large enough to produce cash flow that future PAFE leaders can use to meet educational needs.

Several Sandpoint area families who share our commitment to public education have funded family endowments naming PAFE as their distribution beneficiary. These families have created memorials to their family legacy while giving back to their community for generations to come.
