Lets meet

This book will give you an unique insight of the status quo of Dutch photography. The winners in our yearly PANL Dutch Photography Annual, frames the best of breed amongst our members. Not every one will agree with the choices but that keeps the judging and our organisation healthy and sharp.

Our members are without doubt some of the best photographers in the Netherlands. They are active in three fields; editorial, fashion and advertising. They are broad based, ranging from senior members to students and beginners. Our activities celebrate proven talent as well as focusing to stimulate raw talent.

PANL has never been more alive and kicking. This year (2008) we have, to date, a 33% growth in membership. Submissions for these PANL SONY Awards 2007 were also up 33%, bringing the total of photos to be judged to a staggering 1000. Second only to our best year ever. Interest in many of our acti vities has exceed-ed our most optimistic expectations. To top all this we have found an enthusiastic Main Sponsor in SONY to help us, along with our present sponsors, build the PANL SONY Awards into some-thing really memorable for our members and the photographic community in general. In short, PANL is healthy and is looking confidently to the future.

Times change as do techniques. For the first time all submis sions for the PANL SONY Awards were sent in digitally for the initial first round. Saving members time and the hassle of print-ing and framing their work and the jury of wading through 1000 physical photos. The all important second round of judging, however, was done with prints. Bringing the full force of the work to life.

Creativity remains the force behind all Photographers. Their hunger and constant drive to find the perfect picture results in many hours producing non commissioned work. This year the non commissioned submissions have been on a par with commis-sioned work. This proves that the work in this book show cases the broadest output from our members.

For years we have been proud of our annual. The work we show has been consistently found to be inspiring. That must never change. This year we have added an extra criteria to our briefing. It should also be aimed at a wider more international audience. Just as Dutch Design has made waves in the international market so should the output of Dutch Photography.

We, the PANL Board, wish you an enjoyable and stimulating read.

' photogrAphy cArries my obJects into the worLd without me being AbLe to infLuence it.'

I am a brand. Clients come to me, because I am Richard Hutten. Not because they are looking for a specific item. They want something by me, something that carries my name. Of course this allows me a tremendous amount of freedom to make the work I make.

My brand stands for simplic-

ity, logic and directness with

my own interpretation of these

qualities. I see myself as an au-

thor designer. It is because of

the iconographic nature of my

objects that they preserve their

quality in photography.

I am a brandThis is what you can see in my

product book, where the two

different worlds in which my

objects are presented are shown

consecutively. Above, how the

fashion and interior magazines

world want it: the object on a

white background without any

context. And beneath that my

world – the way I see and feel it:

documentary instead of staged

product photography. The doc-

umentary form visualises the

story behind the object.

You see the object in different

environments, in situations in

life –where and how people

live and how they use the ob-

ject; and so placed in context.

For instance take a look at the

picture of a dog using my dom-

bo mug as a bone. Who would

make that up!

The photographs show that the

product leads a life of its own,

despite me and my intentions.

For my graduation project I

designed the table chair and

despite the limited production

of just 50 pieces, photography

made it world-famous. Only a

small number of people have

seen the physical object, but

the image travelling all over the

world made people discuss it.

The dombo with a production of

100.000 has a similar impact. It

is not about production num-

bers but how an image of my

objects is formed. The story of

my objects creates an effect.

Sometimes a design escapes

you to lead a life of its own

the Art of Looking

Only after you have mapped all these ingredients of life, do you

truly understand what reality is; what it is that actually gives

pleasure, what is merely pleasing or just very functional, and so

on. A well-trained visual memory is the indispensable luggage

for every architect that wants to create good buildings.

And this also goes for the painter, the couturier or the choreogra-

pher that wants to make interesting work, which will last in time

and in people’s minds.

Of all art disciplines photography is the purest form of express-

ing skilled observation. What the photographer sees or chooses

to see through the lens or on the digital screen of the camera, he

instantly fixes in an image. However, this may be a somewhat too

simple way of describing it. For a photographer this looking is at

the same time discovering, composing, lighting, assembling, and

editing, creating an atmosphere, generating calmness or distur-

bance; encountering the adventure. And all this has to be done

with great technical craftsmanship, but also with the indispen-

sable catalogue in your mind’s eye of everything you have seen

in life, really looked at, and this in the most open-minded way

possible. Only then is there a chance that quality originates.

Cees Dam, architect

In the first place photography is: to look.In my profession, architecture, the ability to look is essential. And by looking I mean: actually perceiving. Consciously registering, and capturing the world around you in your mind. And I am not just talking about looking at the constructed world, but also looking at art, at theatre, at fashion and above all: at people.

Photo by Vincent Kruijt Photo by Vincent KruijtThe judges The judges

The 17th annual Photography Awards of the Netherlands was the first to allow digital submissions and online voting. Photographers who made it through the first round were then asked to submit a hard copy print. Once all the submissions were assembled, the jury was flown in to meet for just one day to make their final choices and award the much-coveted prizes. In the past, the jury gathered for two days to hash out their selections. But this year they were able to make their initial selections from their home computers. The members took plenty of time to look over the submissions; three or four evenings or an entire Saturday and Sunday. Their first task was to get an overall impression and take notes. Then they went through, category by category, making their selections. A few took their notes with them to Amsterdam or made screen dumps of their choices. Dennis Baars: “It was fun, but it was a lot of work. The method was simple so selection was quick: it was a matter of yes, no or undecided. I took three days: two evenings just browsing and the third day voting. Being part of an internet jury takes more discipline. The Art Directors Club of the Netherlands is going digital this year too.”

The PANL members had the option to vote as well while those who had submitted photographs were required to do so. In fact, photographers were only allowed to submit work if they also participated on the jury. Members selected one photo in each category, with the final tally counting towards the granting of the PANL Award, the prize for The Best of Show.

Clearly, those who made it through the selection process would want their work to look its best on a quality print. Marc de Groot: “In my opinion, a number of photos would have presented better if the photographer had used film instead of taking digital shots. And they should have had a good professional make a print from the film. But maybe I’m splitting hairs. Generally, the print quality of the works displayed here is better than I’d expected. Not that I think they’re all good, mind you. There are clearly people who haven’t mastered the technical side while others get lost in all the technical possibilities. It’s very exciting to look at photos with this depth of awareness. It reminds me of the multi-tude of elements and stages that go into making a great shot.”

In the past, two days were carved out for the selection process. The first day was about separating the wheat from the chaff; the second involved a discussion to further narrow the selection and award the prizes. On that first day, it was sometimes quite challenging for the jury members to walk into the room where all the submissions were displayed. It was the first time they saw the photos; the hodgepodge of mature and less polished works often created a negative atmosphere. This time the jury members had already made their initial selections at home and were already fairly familiar with the submissions. Thanks to the pre-selection process, the works on display were surprisingly high-quality. This inspired enthusiasm among the jury members, who began the final sifting process in high spirits which they maintained throughout.

Jeannette van Zee, who assists the jury on behalf of the PANL board, reminds the jury that the photo selection must be reduced by half. She also points out that there is no longer a balance between commissioned and non-commissioned works as a majority of the selected work is non-commissioned. She asks if

the jury would please have another look. Nick wants to know what the difference is between commissioned editorial and commissioned advertising. He mentions a still life he thought was really striking. In his view, if the work was editorially commissioned and the photographer was the one to come up with the idea, this should weigh more heavily than if the idea came from an art director. The PANL secretarial staff may provide additional information upon request, revealing everything but the name of the photographer. And if this means a make-break difference to Nick, then they’re happy to do so. A discussion follows about the difference between commissioned and non-commissioned. The freedom to create something yourself and sell it to a magazine. The jury considers it important to know whether the concept behind a photograph came from the photographer or the art director/ the client.

“Has anyone else changed their mind? No? Then it’s out.” On to the next. Jeannette: “One. Two. Three?” She waits to give every-one a chance to consider. Nick: “I’m prepared to fight for this one.” “Tell me, tell me,” Marc says, encouraging details. Nick: “There’s

this year’s jury was not only impressively talented, but impressively tall.

a level to it where you can almost feel what’s going on in the rest of the room. There’s a story here; the room is describing the character of the woman in the photograph. Just the look on her face speaks volumes. What you see almost describes the rest of the building, the other people who are there, what might be about to happen. There’s a lot going on. Even if you forget the story, there are some really beautiful colours and the framing is nice.” Kai Uwe: “I love the colours, the wooden stuff, the interior; the framing is perfect.” Ruth mutters her agreement. Marc joins in: “Is it in Eastern Europe? What is it?” Dennis: “She does look Eastern European, yes.” Marc: “The plant looks plastic, but so does the colour management.” Nick: “It’s like a film fragment, isn’t it?” Ruth: “It’s a little like a film still.” Marc: “This photo-graph raises plenty of questions, which is already a strong point in itself.” Jeannette: “Shall we vote?” Four hands are raised.

A series of three of a young men with short hair wearing a suit and red tie. Kai Uwe: “I’m a fan of this one. I don’t know why. I like the casting. The character isn’t typical. I don’t know what he is – a poker player, a terrorist or just arrogant-looking. I like the framing and the posing. A good piece.” Marc: “The hard thing for me is understanding the added value of them as a series.” Ruth has trouble with the fact that the middle photo is black and white. Kai Uwe: “As a typical manager’s portrait it’s a bit weird. The seventies location …” Marc: “It is quite David Lynch.” Jeannette suggests putting it to a vote. Only one hand is raised. Kai Uwe: “One thing. We voted the other one in, the old man behind his desk piled high with papers. This series is a hundred thousand times better. This is very innovative. I’ll be unhappy if this doesn’t make it into the book. The middle one isn’t as good, but it’s still not bad.” Kai’s appeal gets two more votes and, after

some apparant hesitation Dennis follows, bringing the number of votes to four. The series is in. Julia tells Kai Uwe: “Well done!” From one to four.

Documentary & Life, non-commissioned. Nick wants to discuss a series of four photos. Very good. Quiet, subtle clear and con-vincing. “I really want to vote for that. I think the two pictures at the top have a lovely spacial quality to them. There’s a kind of quietness. By comparison, the compositions of the two at the bottom aren’t really that strong. They’re not as clean as the top two; both are scruffy and almost look like they were taken by a different photographer.” Everyone agrees. Each year it becomes apparent once again how difficult it is to submit a consistent series. Just one weak photograph ruins the chances of the entire series!

Boy with reddish hair. Kai Uwe: “I like the portrait. I’m touched.” Nick: “There’s something curious about the colour on the hair. It’s a beautiful quality.” It reminds Ruth of Vermeer’s “The girl with the pearl earring”. Jeannette: “Who’s voting for it? One, two, three.” Marc is the fourth to vote. In. Marc: “You convinced me. Actually, in the first round I didn’t raise my hand. But Ruth, when you so sensually described the hair around the ear, you won my vote for it.”

Blue dress with white birds and a hand adorned with a chain. Ruth: “The cloth, the fabric, and the mood reflected by these photos’. I can imagine the type of designer involved, the kind of woman the photos are targeting. I like these pictures They attract me.” Marc: “Yes, they’ve grown on me as well. Very naive and quiet. They are not trying to be clever at all.” Dennis:

“I like the one in the middle.” Julia: “What I like about it is that it has the same shape as the butterfly here as it has in the fabric over here. The colours are repeated as well. That’s what I like about these series. The composition is nice because the photogra-pher has thought about what textures to put together.” Jeannette: “Ok, shall we vote for these series? Who’s in favour? One. Two.” Giggling. Only the two female jury members vote for this se-ries. Marc: “I must admit I have my doubts.” Kai Uwe: “Half a point for me.” Ruth, to Julia: “I like what you said. It’s kind of naive.” Julia: “When you look closer I think it really grows on you. I had a long look at these pictures online and they kept coming back to me. I’m not sure why. There’s something about them.” Marc: “They capture a kind of un-fashion-like quality that is in it’s own way fashionable.” Dennis: “Ok, I’ll give them my vote.” Jeannette: “That’s three. Three and a half.” Then Kai Uwe decides to give the series a full vote and it’s in, much to every-one’s delight.

Next up is People & Portraits, non-commissioned. Jeannette does her best to inspire the jury to award prizes. One Silver and – for the first time – one Gold are granted. Jeanette and the jury are pleased. “Ok. We have a Gold and we have Silver. And what’s this, Silver as well?” “Merit,” says Julia decisively. Speaking with an exaggerated Dutch accent, Marc says: “Merit, anyone?” Kai Uwe replies absently: “I’m married.”

The next category is Interior & Exterior, non-commissioned. A relatively broad category. Nick: “Bold ideas. Excellent.” Jeannette: “Who wants to go for Gold?” Three hands are raised. “Silver then?” Jeannette asks. Five hands. When considering the next submission Ruth asks if two submissions can be awarded

Silver. The answer is yes. Kai Uwe: “Is it really Silver quality?” Jeannette pipes up: “Or do you think it should be Gold? Shall we vote for Gold?” Nick: “The quality is not very good, nor is the printing. I really don’t think it’s worthy of Silver.” But Marc thinks this submission is better than the one just awarded Silver, so they vote for Gold. But no one considers it worthy. Marc’s point is really that he disagrees with the previous vote. The jury votes for Silver and six hands go up; this is the second Silver award in this category. Next the members consider a Merit in this category. There are three votes in favour. Nick: “Oh, come on.” A fourth vote is added for the Merit. Things are moving along. The jury is feeling generous. It’s time for the PANL Award, the Best of Show. You would think it would go to a photograph with a ‘Gold Award’; after all, Gold is the best of the best. In the past, the jury put the Gold Award winners side by side or, if no Gold was granted, the Silver Awards. The PANL Award was then selected from this group. But this year was different. As is the case with popular TV programmes like Idols and Big Brother, other votes were considered alongside those of the jury: namely the member votes, which were added to the jury selections to determine the winner. The jury was surprised, even amazed to hear which photograph won the coveted PANL Award. This was because the submission that was awarded Gold by the jury received no points at all from the members. The jury then considered what the outcome would be if a different photo was upgraded from Silver to Gold. But even then, the photo ended up with insufficient points to win the PANL Award. No matter what they do, the members’ choice wins. The jury must concede.

Julia: “I think it’s a very cinematic image. Sensual and intimate. A lovely composition.

While we were voting on other works, I’ve been looking at it at length and it stands head and

shoulders above the rest. Classic black and white, without seeming cliché. Well styled.”

Ruth: “You know, I’m a storyteller. I love to look at pictures that tell a story. They’re fun to

look at. It’s intriguing to find out what’s going on. And the photographer did a nice job here.

Clearly, it wasn’t a one-off shot, because he or she took a couple of pictures. I would guess

the photographer is a professional; very much aware of what he or she is doing. I was very

intrigued, indeed. I prefer picture stories. I think it’s very funny when somebody does this

type of thing. I’m much more drawn into a picture if I have the impression there’s real life

behind it. You get a kind of inside view of people’s lives. That’s much more interesting to me

than a staged photo. This touches my job. We do mainly picture stories. Storytelling through

photography.”

Nick: “Of all the individual pictures I’ve seen – i.e. not including the series – this one tells the

longest story. There’s a lot going on here; it really holds my attention. A beautiful shot. If I had

a second choice, it would be the black and white series of the houses, which is really my style.

Absolutely decisive, perfectly executed. Sharp lines. There’s something emotional about it.”

Kai Uwe: “I love the funny situation depicted here. One dog is biting the other. Normally,

this could be traumatic. But the dog looking into the camera seems bored, like he doesn’t

mind what the other dog is doing. It’s really comical. Shows the photographer’s sharp eye.

And I like the composition.”

Dennis: “This photo is somewhat abstract. You’re not sure if it’s a caravan or perhaps a car.

Maybe it’s a site where a caravan once stood. I assume we’re looking inside the caravan.

But I’m not sure of that either. It’s so simple and so weird. It looks like it was cut out of cardboard.

It touches me somehow. It’s really quite peculiar. And very abstract. It kind of stands out.”

Marc: “This is simply a beautiful, playful, sensual play of lines, diagonals, structures, light,

shadow, composition, tonalities. The use of light and shadow reminds me of the work of

Edward Weston. As does the subject, showing part of a naked body. The photo is sexy. I think

it’s a great shot.”
