Richter, who earned honor-able mention on last year’sAll-Wright County Confer-ence team, was GSL’s secondrunner — close behind seniorJalen Metcalf — at the 2012Panthers’ first four meets. Ineach one, he posted a timeunder 18 minutes.

Tichy’s season started latebecause of an injury, but heposted GSL’s fourth-best timeat Waconia and seemed to be

coming on. But neither he norRichter has run since the Wa-conia meet.

Head coach Jeff Delwichelisted them as “doubtful” forany further cross countrymeets this season.

At DC’s meet, Metcalfplaced third overall after goingunder 17:45 for the sixthstraight meet. Delwiche prais-es Metcalf, calling his trainingworkouts “phenomenal.”

Meanwhile, sophomoresIsiah Herout, Jac Chelman andGarrett Ober are coming on,placing eighth, 11th and 20thoverall, respectively. SeniorsKyle Polzin (17th), TannerKonen (22) and Kyle Zajicek(30) are stepping up, too.

GSL head coach Scott Tschimperle enjoyed a lightmoment prior to his team’s WCC game with Litchfieldlast Friday.

for the third — and most im-portant — time.

“He made a great catch,”head coach Scott Tschimperlesaid.

The win kept GSL undefeat-ed in the Wright County Con-ference’s new West Division.

GSL, 4-1 overall, is 3-0 inthe WCC West with one divi-sional game – Oct. 17 at Das-sel-Cokato — to play.

This Friday, the Panthershope to celebrate their home-coming with a triumph over arival from the past, namelyBecker. The Bulldogs, seem-ingly always strong, are 5-0this year — after pulling out a28-22 thriller over Albany lastFriday.

***Against Litchfield, the Pan-

thers started fast, but failed tocapitalize on all their opportu-nities.

With the game’s openingpossession, GSL quarterbackKeaton Anderson capped a 66-yard march by running 8 yardsfor a touchdown.

With Litchfield’s first pos-session, Ebert (who else?)blew up the Dragons’ initial at-tempt for offense by forcing afumble GSL defensive endRay Eberhard covered at theLitchfield 30,

Three plays later, the Pan-thers were back in the endzone. Not quite 6 minutes intothe game, GSL led 14-0.

The opportunities kept com-ing.

Litchfield’s second posses-sion ended with Ebert’s firstinterception, which set upGSL’s attack at the Litchfield43.

On third down, All-WCCsafety Ethan Maass — playingboth ways in halfback JakeStuedemann’s absence (healthreasons) — broke away for anapparent 39-yard touchdown. But a penalty for an illegalblock wiped out the play, andeventually the drive.

Litchfield put up sevenpoints with its next possession;then GSL got a chance to an-swer. Starting from the Drag-ons 45, the Panthers marchedto the 17 before losing a fum-ble — GSL’s lone turnover ofthe night.

Two plays later, Ebertpicked off his second Kinnypass, giving GSL’s offense theball at the Litchfield 25. But afourth-down pass from the 10fell incomplete with 8 secondsleft in the half.

“They were hard hitters, ...very hard hitters,” said second-year GSL center MichaelSkoglund.

***Litchfield moved to a tying

touchdown to start the secondhalf; then appeared to be get-ting the ball back after forcinga GSL punt. However, CarterPinske’s hit on Dragons returnspecialist Cody Rau forced afumble Maass recovered at theLitchfield 17,

After a sack and a procedurepenalty, Anderson found RyanKuester behind the Litchfielddefense and connected withhim for seven points.

Tschimperle said end DerekBratsch, who ran an under pat-tern, was the first target. How-ever, with good pass protec-tion, Anderson spotted Kuester, who ran a deep post route — asdid end Reed Dunbar.

“Keaton had plenty of visionand made a great play,” thecoach said.

On back-to-back plays earlyin the fourth quarter, Kuesterran a toss sweep to the left sidefor 29 yards and Anderson kepton a mid-line option to the leftside for 27 yards and a TD.

Tschimperle said Kuestermade “a heck of a move” to getaround a defensive end andturn the corner on his run. OnAnderson’s run, Tschimperlesaid every Panther made hisblock.

“It was just how you draw itup,” he said,

After that, it came down toKinny and Ebert.

“He’s a great athlete,” Ebertsaid about the Litchfield QB.

But it was Ebert who had thelast say on this particular day.

***— More than $800 was

raised at last Friday’s game to“Tackle Cancer” for the RandyShaver Cancer Research andCommunity Fund.

— Tschimperle said Litch-field blitzed more than 50 per-cent of GSL’s snaps.

— Eric Thalmann was 4-for-4 on PAT kicks. Meanwhile,Dunbar blocked Litchfield’s

third PAT kick.“It’s amazing how important

those extra-point kicks are,”Tschimperle said.

Overall, he thought GSLspecial teams had an outstand-ing game.

— Becker’s aerial attack fea-tures Tommy Benson, a four-year starter at quarterback, andfavorite receivers Brett Water-cott and Joel Hopkins.

“They’re a tremendous foot-ball team,” Tschimperle said.

— The current WCC Weststandings read like this:

GSL 3-0 (4-1); Annandale 1-1 (4-1); Dassel-Cokato 1-1 (2-3); New London-Spicer 1-2 (3-2); Litchfield 0-2 (2-3).

This Friday, Annandale is atNew London-Spicer, whileDassel-Cokato visits Litch-field.

— Tschimperle said Stuede-mann has been cleared to prac-tice and play this week.

Otherwise, no one new hasbeen added to GSL’s injury list.

— Ebert’s list of contribu-tions also includes kickoffs thatare not only long, but withgood height — which the cov-erage gang loves to see.

Not only is his leg stronger,Ebert says his technique is bet-ter.

“I’m keeping my headdown,” he said.

— Updating records ofteams in Section 2 (ClassAAAA):

Hutchinson 5-0, Marshall 5-0, GSL 4-1, Dassel-Cokato 2-3,New Ulm 1-4, and MankatoEast 0-5.

ST. PAUL – Minnesota em-ployers are cautiously opti-mistic about the state’s eco-nomic future, but are not con-fident the state has fullyemerged from the four-yearnational recession.

These findings highlightedthe ninth-annual MinnesotaBusiness Barometer Survey,co-sponsored by the Minneso-ta Chamber of Commerce andHimle Rapp and Company, apublic affairs firm headquar-tered in Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Chamber isthe state’s largest business ad-vocacy organization repre-senting 2,400 companies ofall types and sizes across thestate. In nearly all areas of thesurvey, the opinions of thegeneral business communityaligned with those of Min-nesota Chamber members.

This year, questions con-cerning the economy contin-ued to provide mixed results. For the first time in severalyears, the survey showed thatoptimism is slowly returningamong businesses. Thirty-onepercent said the economy isgetting better, compared with13 percent a year ago.

However, only 21 percentof the respondents reportedprofits were better than a yearago, while 25 percent reportedlower profits than in the pre-vious year. In addition, anequal number of employersreported reducing their num-ber of employees as reportedan increase.

As the Business Barometerhas found in other years, 84percent of business ownersand managers stated theywere very or somewhat opti-mistic about Minnesota’s eco-nomic future over the next 10years.

“While business ownershave a positive long-term out-look, the survey identifies realbarriers to job creation,” Min-

nesota Chamber PresidentDavid Olson said. “To cash inon this long-term optimism, the governor and Legislaturemust take timely action to ad-dress these concerns – if theywant companies to stay andinvest in Minnesota now.”

While 55 percent of surveyrespondents rated Minnesotaas having a good business cli-mate compared with otherstates, they also identified fivekey barriers that must be ad-dressed to strengthen the busi-ness environment:

• Taxes remain a key obsta-cle to job creation, identifiedby seven out of 10 employersas one of the two most impor-tant barriers in Minnesota. The tax burden continues togrow compared with fiveyears ago.

• The stability and pre-dictability of government reg-ulations are important factorsin business decisions to investin Minnesota operations.

• Costs continue to rise foremployers who provide healthinsurance. Businesses are notyet looking to eliminate theemployee benefit, but areseeking ways to manage thiscost.

• Half the employers sur-veyed reported there areenough skilled workers avail-able in their industry. Whengaps arise, employers identifytraining rather than a shortageof workers as the primaryworkforce barrier.

• Electricity costs continueto be a concern, and reliabilityis beginning to surface as alarger factor for some busi-ness owners and managers.

Tax reform is certain to beon the agenda for the 2013Legislature and the stage is al-ready set for a vigorous de-bate. Business Barometer re-spondents identified four pri-mary goals for any tax re-form: Simplify; tax voluntary

behavior; make revenues pre-dictable; tax activity and notincome.

“All of those goals greatlychallenge Gov. Mark Day-ton’s renewed call for a fourthbracket in personal incometaxes,” Olson explained. “Iftax reform is going to helpfuel an economic expansion,we are going to need a differ-ent strategy than adding morebrackets.”

Businesses recognize thatwhat transpires at the Capitolhas tremendous impact ontheir operations, said JoeMaher of UPM Blandin Paperin Grand Rapids, the newchair of the Minnesota Cham-ber Board of Directors. Eightypercent of the BusinessBarometer respondents saidthe governor and lawmakersplay an important role in de-termining the business cli-mate.

“Because government canboth positively and negativelyimpact the state’s business cli-mate, employers are playing amajor role in political discus-sions,” he said. “Our immedi-ate focus is on the Novemberelections as we seek to electlegislators who understandwhat it will take to create apro-jobs environment in Min-nesota.”

The Minnesota BusinessBarometer Survey polledowners or managers of 350Minnesota businesses with atleast five employees. Thesample surveyed accuratelyreflects the breadth of Min-nesota’s business communityin the areas of size, locationand type of business (manu-facturing, retail and service). The survey was conducted inJuly and August and has amargin of error of 5.3 percent.

Editor’s note: This pressrelease was submitted by theMinnesota Chamber ofCommerce..

Trees have been understress again in 2012. Above-average heat and summerdrought conditions have pro-vided a less than ideal situa-tion. Following is some help-ful information for newlyplanted trees, existing trees, mechanical equipment pro-tection, fertilization, andpruning.

According to the Universi-ty of Minnesota Forest Re-source Extension, in the Mid-west region, bareroot treesand shrubs should be plantedwhen the plants are dormantin the spring or at the end ofthe growing season (fall).

Balled and burlapped, con-tainerized, and containergrown plants can be plantedthroughout the growing sea-son, but with caution duringthe summer months.

If planting in the fall, therecommendation is to plantfour weeks before the soiltemperature drops below 40degrees Fahrenheit. To planttrees correctly, get a copy ofthe U of M publication called“Planting Trees and Shrubs inMinnesota,” which can befound on the U of M Exten-sion Website: http://z.umn.edu/98n or by calling most Uof M Extension offices. Thepublication also has choicesfor proper Minnesota treespecies.

Watering is going to be im-portant to a newly plantedtree as well as any existingtrees on your landscape.Since watering is such atime-consuming task, youmay have to pick and choosethe existing trees that youwant to water. I recommendwatering any newly plantedtrees and also water any treesthat have shown stress, dis-ease or insect problemsthrough the growing season.

The dry conditions in late-summer and fall in 2012 aregoing to be very problematicfor trees in 2012. Be sure toget out and water trees untilthe ground freezes.

Water newly planted andexisting trees over the rootzone of the tree. Roots oftrees can vary from 1-1/2 to 3times as wide as the canopy.Avoid frequent light wateringand instead water infrequent-ly and heavily.

You will want to wet thesoil to a 6- to 8-inch depthand then let the soil dry out inbetween. Use a rod to deter-mine when you have wettedthe soil to that depth.

Believe it or not, you canoverwater trees, which willstarve the roots of oxygenand cause roots to rot. If fallrains are averaging one inchevery week, watering willprobably not be necessary.

Generally, you want tohave an adequate amount ofmoisture before the groundfreezes up in late fall, espe-cially with coniferous trees.

My Minnesota Woods web-site has additional informa-tion on seasonal watering oftrees and shrubs: http://z.umn.edu/98m.

Protect stems of landscapeand shrub trees from animalsand mechanical equipment. This is most important onnew or young shrubs andtrees.

Use a mesh or hardwirecloth at least three inchesfrom the stem. Plastic guardscan also be used, but they areonly recommended to encasethe lower part of the stem, where damage can take place.

Sun scald can be preventedby wrapping the trunk with acommercial tree wrap, plastictree guards, or any otherlight-colored material. Put thewrap on in the fall and re-

move it in the spring after thelast frost. Wraps should beused primarily on new trees.

Fertilizing trees should bedone on a case-by-case basis.A soil test can be done to de-termine if the soil does nothave the adequate amounts offertilizer in the soil.

University of MinnesotaSoil Test Kits can be pickedup at most University of Min-nesota Extension offices.

Often, the tree has suffi-cient amounts of nutrientsavailable if the lawn is beingfertilized regularly. If fertiliz-er is needed, a late fall appli-cation can be done before theground freezes for coniferoustrees and an application canbe applied to deciduous treesbetween when it is fullyleafed out and when it willstart showing fall colorchange.

Pruning also can be donethis time of year on manytrees. Late fall brings the timewhen it is safe to prune oaksand elms until next spring.During the dormant seasonserious disease problems areless problematic.

Hold off on apple treesuntil the best window for pre-venting disease spread, whichis late winter (late-Februaryto early-March).

Another helpful publica-tion is the University of Min-nesota publication “PruningTrees and Shrubs,” located onthe University of MinnesotaExtension website, or by call-ing most University of Min-nesota Extension offices. This publication is a goodhow-to guideline for pruningtrees.
