MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTESRANDAL HUBER

Rama-lama-lama, ka-dinga da ding-dong!  Believe it or not, it’s the 40th anniversary of the movie Grease.  Grease stirs happy, nostalgic memories for me.  It was the first drive-in movie I attended and remember jockeying with my brother for the best spot to hear the tiny metal speaker hanging from my dad’s window.

Whether this is your first Chemainus Theatre visit or you never miss a show, we’re so thankful that you’ve joined us today!

This show is the culmination of a year-long, intensive process that began last spring with the negotiation of rights, and then ramped up with creative development by the design team.  The building of the set kicked into high gear in March, followed closely by costumes.  All of our shows are fully professional and the whole host of amazing talent, contracted from across Canada, converged on Chemainus four weeks prior to opening, to rehearse and bring the script to life.

The Chemainus Theatre is a not-for-profit registered charity, as are all Canadian theatres from the smallest to the largest – like the Shaw Festival or Stratford.  We draw about 75,000 theatre-goers per season and are the 3rd largest professional theatre in British Columbia – the largest outside Vancouver.

The Theatre continues to flourish because of you - the wonderfully supportive and engaged audience.    Thank you for attending and we hope you leave here today humming one of the show’s iconic tunes and eagerly looking forward to your next Chemainus Theatre experience.

Sit back in your newly restored seat, unplug from the outside world, and enjoy the show!

ARTIST DIRECTOR’S NOTESMARK DUMEZ Welcome to the 1950’s and the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s rendition of Grease, with all the songs, saddle shoes, duck tails and bubble gum you love!  What really sold me on this show was an undertone I had never considered until reading and discussing it a little more.   In Grease, we encounter a fundamental teenage conumdrum: trying to fit in while striving to be unique.  Both Sandy and Danny are caught up in conflicting expectations. Sandy struggles to fit in with the values of commercial appearance and behaviors while Danny wrestles with the demands of the rebellious counter-culture.

Whether it’s doing what your parents want – or what they don’t want – teenagers coming of age can find themselves in a bind between expectations.  Through the action of the play and the loosening of those expectations, Sandy and Danny step toward each other to find new truths.  Danny tries to move out of a macho role for awhile in order to woo Sandy, as Sandy finds a way to embrace a new strength in her own voice and personality by shedding 1950’s consumer culture constraints.  These are earnest acts of empathy and, let’s face it, teenage love and angst that stretch them both. They learn from each other and at the same time, transform into more of their ‘true selves’.

This generous look at the challenges of growing up and finding one’s own voice, along with all the fun, cars and burgers that go along with it, is a special part of what makes Grease a musical phenomenon across the globe.

Thanks to the talented cast and crew who have realized this show on our stage – right here in Chemainus.  Enjoy!

The 50’s are back, and we can’t wait to see you there!

DIRECTOR’S NOTESBARBARA TOMASIC

How long has it been since you were in high school or had a summer love? For some of you, it’s happening now, and for others it’s a distant memory.

In Grease, we are going back to 1959. TV was the new influencer of dreams, advertising was taking off and showing people they could have the hottest car, the newest fashion, or be like their favourite celebrity; kind of like the internet today...except much slower.

The kids at Rydell High all have dreams of love, glamour, and freedom. Doody wants to be a rock star, Marty to be Grace Kelly, and Sandy and Danny just want to be free to be who they really are.

Grease the movie came out when I was a little girl, and my parents wouldn’t let me see it because it was too risqué. That only made it even more desirable and when, at age 13, I saw it at a pajama party with my girlfriends, I became obsessed. I loved the era, the music and the fashion, but what I loved most was the celebration of young people and their independence. They were rebellious and free, and joyful – and to me that was everything.

My hope is that this musical reminds you of your first love, your first car, and your gang of best friends.

“Grease is the time, is the place is the moment, and Grease is the way we are feeling.”
