Editor’s view . . .by Julie Belanger

I am asked, most often from a new member of PAPA, why should I go to a PAPA conference. I’ve heard the usual excuses: It’s expensive; I have to be gone from my work; and already know everything there is know about aerial photography.

Personally I go to the PAPA conferences for the camaraderie. My best friends are in PAPA and many I only get to see once a year at the PAPA event. But to anyone asking why THEY should go, I would say, “Miss a PAPA conference? Are you out of your mind?”

For the Atlanta conference you will be amazed at the presenters who all have something incredibly NEW, interesting, different, dynamic and vital that a member absolutely would

be out of their mind to miss this event.

The conference has a fantastic line up of speakers on the how to and what’s new.

Of course, we will be talking about drones. It may be the elephant in the room so we wanted to hear the FAA plans directly from the elephant’s…er Horse’s mouth. PAPA’s intrepid President, Chuck Boyle, requested that Jim Williams, Manager of the

FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Offi ce to address our membership at the conference. Mr. Williams has accepted our invitation and we are all eagerly looking forward to hearing his insights.

To tell you the truth, we could stop right there. After we hear what Mr. Williams has to say, we could spend two days talking and planning, but there will be more to talk about than drones. So we listen to the membership on what else they are talking about.

We have found that many of our problems and bottlenecks are in Marketing

And if you are like me, you have questions: Am I doing this right? Is it effective? What are all the smart people doing? How much money is this going to cost me?

Well, at this conference, you will have the answers! Google Adwords can be an expensive trap, but we have a Google Adwords expert who will show us how to avoid over paying and getting

the most bang for our Pay Per Clicks marketing campaign.

Ever thought about Video Blogging? Never heard of it! But YOU WILL when our guest speaker will explain how you can dominate the web searches with his techniques.

And don’t forget about Social Media-Facebook, Google Business Page, Twitter etc. All too much for you? There is always a handshake and the gift pen. Just sit back

at the conference - guaranteed YOU WILL learn something!

Do you do Verticals? Do you want to? Learn about it HERE.

There will be presentations on Photoshop, After Effects, and Adobe Premier Pro, insurance, new equipment and I can go on and on and those who know me know I usually do.

I hope every PAPA member will come to Atlanta. It is a lofty goal, but what isn’t in our business. (Did you catch the pun there? Of course you did.) Julie and Pat Belanger own the 111th Aerial & Architectural Photography in San Martin, California. Julie can be reached at [email protected]

Have you ever really just stopped to think of how a drone could be used for positive purposes? The list, on surface, seems endless. Here are a few:

Commercial Usages Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)

Search and RescueCommercial Aerial Photography/ VideographyConstruc on Progress MonitoringInfrastructure Monitoring and Inspec onAerial Crop Dus ngAerial Crop Assessment

Aerial Surveying and MappingMovie MakingEmergency ResponseDisaster AssessmentMedia Coverage

These are the uses I read about in almost every article of the subject. When you think about it though, manned helicopters and airplanes have been doing most of the items in this list this for decades. So, what would be really useful to know is why the drone technology can be useful for certain people in their work. Like other disruptive technology, GPS-guided drones that are inexpensive and carry miniaturized camera systems that can do amazing things. Simply put, the technology levels the playing fi eld for the individual. Drones can be used for positive purposes or negative purposes.Search and RescueA highway patrolman can carry a drone in the trunk of his car and search for a missing motorist suffering from dementia thereby eliminating the time and expense of calling in the nearest police helicopter; he can also use it to spy on his neighbors when he is bored or use it too close to moving vehicles.Commercial Aerial PhotographyA real estate agent can use a drone to get really eye catching and stunning views of his new listing on the lake, thereby giving him a leg up on the competition and offering insight for a prospective buyer; she can also use it to spy on her neighbor when she is bored, or might be tempted to do a little recon of the neighbors backyard to compare properties. In some cases, technical incompetency might just hurt someone.Construction Progress MonitoringA construction site superintendent could use a drone to document site progress any time he wants and also use it to inspect real time activity of all the subcontractors. Excessive usage could also be a complete waste of time for the person who is supposed to spend face time with the subs managing means and methods of the actual construction work.Infrastructure Monitoring and InspectionA bridge inspector could use a drone to access the large high bridge to inspect the underside without having to use other extraordinary methods like rappelling, man-lifts, scaffolding, etc., methods that can be dangerous and cost more money, your tax money. On the other hand, if used improperly, the drone could by lost datalink veer off course and hit a motorist, causing an accident. You get the picture. Drones level the playing fi eld and put individuals in control to do either good things or bad things, just like the internet, smart phones, and social media. Proper usages save people time, money, headaches, and put them in control, in a world that seems to be going out of control. If you were to use one for commercial purposes, where is the demand for your talent and what positive impact can you make? If you have written off using a drone in your commercial aerial photo/ video business, how will the technology affect what you are doing now? Should you be fi ghting the ine vitable or adjust course to bluer skies?

Member in the Viewfinderby Dee Ann Mooney

Our Member in the Viewfi nder is Pat Kelly of Sky-Shots Aerial Photography in Atlanta, Georgia. In business since 1989, Pat offers his customers ground, helicopter and airplane photography. Pat is not a pilot and has found, through renting from different fl ight schools, he gets to spend a lot of time in ‘teaching’ low time pilots with no photo experience. Patience is certainly a virtue when it comes to being an aerial photographer and training new pilots.

Pat says he has always worked in air industry. He worked for Northwest Airlines for a while, then went on to work for an air cargo company for 15 years, working his way up to Director. After he left the air cargo company, Pat was looking around for a new job and saw an ad for a company in Canada that was selling remote control blimps from which a person could take photos. He decided that sounded like it would be interesting, so he purchased the fi rst remote controlled photo blimp in the U.S. Having a new unique business, both CNN and Headline News featured Pat and his blimp story every few hours the fi rst weekend of the fi rst war in Iraq in 1990.

Although the blimp is no longer in service, Pat is still really enjoying working in the fi eld of photography. When asked what he likes to do other than photography, he said that he loves to travel and that he and his wife Renee enjoy taking trips to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to visit her family, and if they can get the time, they like to take short trips with friends. One of the places that he would like to get back to is the Grand Canyon so he could shoot photos of all the wonderful scenery around there.

Pat and Renee have been married for 19 years. They have one child – a Shih Tzu named “Echeaux”, so named because it represents the aviation letter “E”. Lately, in her spare time, Renee is doing a lot of painting around the house and working on fi nding some fun things for the PAPA ladies to do while in Atlanta. Renee almost always accompanies Pat to the PAPA conferences and she knows how we girls like to get together and have fun.

Pat can be reached via email at [email protected]

I plan to start including a “Member in the Viewfi nder” article in each issue of PAPA Views. This time, Pat Kelly came to mind because he has been such a help in getting things together for the 2015 conference in Atlanta and we really appreciate him. I may be collecting information about people at the conference for future articles, so if you see me coming at you with a notebook and pen, be aware, you could be one of my future victims! I look forward to getting to know ya’ll better - Dee Ann

RETIRE! - Is that one of your goals? . . . . . . Maybe so, maybe not.

By George Bordner, Bordner Aerials, Inc, Bloomington, Minnesota (Wintering in Pahrump, Nevada)

Stock photography can be part of your answer. Here in Minnesota cold country we’ve found a good market for summer oblique shots of properties for the general real estate market. That stock markethas enabled me to:

Retire! Well, semi-retire. I am now spending my winter in southern Nevada, laying in the sun and watching my e-mail for orders. In the winter there is nothing I can do in Minnesota that I can’t do in Nevada.

Well almost, I do have to travel back once a month to shoot my construction jobs, but that’s pretty simple. Watch the weather, fl y to MSP, shoot, and fl y back to LAS (I’m actually not in LAS but in Pahrump, about 60 miles west). I don’t sub construction out because I’m fussy and it’s a good excuse to see my grandkids.

Yes, once in a while a shooting job will come up, but that’s been easily handled so far by subbing to others in my area. It’s important to always be able to satisfy your customer in any way possible, even if you have to give it away. We always guarantee everything to that customer no matter who does the shooting.

Now all this came about because the aerials were a sideline to our real estate consulting business. We took so many photos for that business that folks would fi nd it handy to buy some of those for their own use.

The residue is over 40 years of negatives and digital fi les (all digital since 2004). But the important point to remember for you is that the vast majority of my stock sales are from images 3 years old or less.

So that’s sort of how it started. But it’s something that you can start now! Any one of you can begin, and at little additional cost. Here’s how.

When I fl y in the summer I shoot continuously. I may have only 5 sites to shoot of which I take 100 images. But on that same fl ight, with no additional time, I may shoot 900 other images. Low level, high level, building close-ups, what have you. During the course of the year I’ll shoot 6 to 8,000 images of our greater metro area. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area population is about 3 million.

So, it doesn’t take a great deal of extra expense. But what about time? It depends on how you set it up. We have our area divided into about 80 separate areas, based on city boundaries. After downloading I go through and keyword all images with that city tag. I then upload thumbnails to Portfolio Express for cataloging images.

Time? Probably about two to three hours for a typical fl ight. So you have just put 1,000 images in your stock library for a total cost of no dollars and two to three hours of your time. Continue that process over the course of one year and you’ll have a good start on selling from stock.

Now the benefi t for the customer in Minnesota is that he can get a summer shot in the winter. That’s sort of how it started, but I sell lots of stock in the summer too. Why? Because it’s fast and easy. Your general real estate type of customer is always in a hurry. I can offer immediate turn-around on any order, once she’s made her decision.

I know quite a few others have made good businesses in the southern climate by doing this exact kind of stock business.

So why not give it a shot? What have you got to lose?

Business Announcement from Kent LarsonAs of Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, Susan and Dan Hedenberg now own the assets of Aerial Photographers, LLC. Susan and Dan’s new company name is DC Aerial Photos, Inc. We are in the process of making the switch over.

Although I will no longer be involved in the day to day operations, though I will still be available if needed. My extension number has moved from 1 to 3 at (703) 281-9300.

Susan and Dan have been fl ying all my sites for over 18 months and it was time to make a move for both of us. A very positive thing.

I still own the name Aerial Photographers, LLC and have a couple of ongoing projects around the country. I signed a non-compete agreement to not work inside the SFRA without Susan and Dan’s permission for two years.

I plan to continue being involved in aerial photography, just not at the level I have been in the past. None of this affects my commitment to PAPA. Without my good friends in PAPA I would have never been as successful in aerial photography I have been. Thanks to all of you!

PAPA Member Featured in AOPA MagazineMark Sanderson posted this link to Facebook the other day:http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All-News/2015/March/Pilot/f_hawaii which leads to an online article done by AOPA about fellow PAPA member Brian Powers. I contacted Brian and asked him to write up a little something about the article about the AOPA article, and could he hurry up and get something to me because I had to get the newsletter

printed. He very kindly had it to me the same day. Thanks again Brian! The AOPA writer starts off his on line article saying, “Photographers see the world from a perspective few people get to see—especially aerial photographers. With one hand on the yoke and the other on his camera, Hawaii-based photographer Brian Powers captures the awe-inspiring beauty of the islands from his 1979 Piper Cherokee.” Check out the link to see more, then watch for the hard copy of the

March AOPA magazine for even more.Brian says, “A couple of years ago I put the editor of AOPA’s e-mail address on my Aloha Monday Photo mailing list. He became a fan of my weekly aerial photos and several months ago he called and asked if I’d like to have an article about me and my aerial photography in a future issue of the AOPA monthly magazine. Of course I would, I told him and we went about the work to make it happen. I supplied him with a selection of photos I had taken over the skies of Hawaii. We had a long telephone interview about what it is I do photographically and my fl ying experiences in Hawaii. This last week an online preview story appeared on the AOPA Portfolio webpage. I am told by the editor of the monthly AOPA magazine that the full story will be in the March edition. I am very much looking forward to seeing the article and hope you all enjoy it as well!”Brian can be reached at [email protected].

PAPA Views Cover . . .

This issues’ cover contest theme was “The Golden Mean”. This compositional principle can be a little diffi cult to wrap your brain around, especially when trying to compose a photograph from a moving airplane or helicopter. To assist photographers with composition after the shutter is released, Photoshop offers several different overlays in the cropping tool. Two of these overlays are useful when using the Golden Mean - the Golden Ratio and the Golden Spiral. Both are based on the ratio of 1.618 to 1. Most of the entries for this issues contest used the Golden Spiral, however “Antares Dawn” was a good example of the Golden Ratio. If you measure from the bottom of the image to the horizon, you will see that it is exactly 1.618 to 1, and from the left edge to the two light poles on the right is almost the same ratio. Many famous works of art and architecture were created using this principle, like the Mona Lisa and the Parthenon. A quick search online will lead you to more sources of information about this principle of composition, as well as many famous examples. It’s always a good idea to look for new ways to make our work resonate with our clients, and this is just one more tool we can use. Our next cover will be chosen from the PAPA Conference 2015 Print Competition. See Page 22 and the PAPA web site for more information.

Cover Photo:Volcanic Vent – by Jim WarkThis was taken on a routine stock photo shoot in the southwestern U.S. in January 1995 - mainly looking for geologic subjects. The photo is of one of a number of volcanic vents, or cones, which dot the Mojave Desert southwest of Baker, CA. The area is part of the Cima Volcanic Field and Range which last erupted about 10,000 years ago (aka: Cinder Cones National Natural Landmark). The photo has made one stock sale. Camera: Leica M6; fi lm: Fuji ASA 100; Lens: 35mm @ f4, 1/1000; Altitude about 3,000’ agl.The photo was deliberately skewed in the taking to maximize the subject.

Runner up:Golden Ratio - by Jesper LarsenI was fl ying along , shooting a Farm. Just next to the farm, there was this gravel pit. I took a couple of shots with my Nikon D600, when I passed it. I didn’t notice anything special about the shapes and forms before I came back at my offi ce and started looking at the photos. Not very often to see this kind of shapes in the landscape. The photo is a cut out of a bigger photo.

Runner Up:Antares Dawn – Patrick J. HendricksonI was tasked to furnish aerial photographs of Orbital Sciences Antares A-One mission to demonstrate the capabilities to resupply the International Space Station. Just days before the photo mission, I had to send my Canon 5D out for emergency sensor cleaning. Kent Larson stepped in and graciously allowed me free use of his Nikon D-800. Kent has always been a friend you can count on for good advice, share a laugh or lend a hand. Kent packed up the camera with Steve Bussman who would furnish his capable Hughes 500 helicopter as platform for my stills and digital HD video taken from the back seat. He fl ew from Manassas Airport to Taylor Field here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia just West of Wallops Island where the rocket stood on launch pad 0A

awaiting launch later that week. The next morning dawned exquisite with clear skies and exceptional lighting. We lifted just before dawn and witnessed the many shades and colors of this Antares Dawn. I reviewed many of the exposures from the fl ight and was converted to the Sony Sensor in the Nikon D800 which out performs the Canon sensor hands down. The yellows in the enclosed image are all Nikon.

Runner Up:Bermuda TriangleExumas, BS – by Jim WarkThis photo was taken over the Exuma Shoals of the Grand Bahama Bank on April 21, 1993. Wife, Judy, and I were en route to Venezuela via Turks & Caicos , St Maarten and Grenada. We only made it to Grenada where Judy took a bad fall and a return fl ight was begun. Total round trip from Colorado was 21 days, 73 hours, approx 8,800 miles.Camera: Leica R6; fi lm: Fuji ASA 50; Lens: 28mm @ f4, 1/1000; Altitude 5,000’

Why don’t we have conferences in February? Here in Northeast, the weather is unpredictable. Our winter started really nice till the end of January. With in the last 3 weeks, Boston has received over 50 inches of snow not including the 24.6 inches from the 2015 Bliz-zard in January. My home town has reported 28 inches on the ground with 7 inches just from last night and they are predicting more to come this week.Winter storms can close down transportation to and from the confer-ence, so even if our PAPA event is happening in a southern climate, those members who are from the north might not be able to attend (or get home), so we schedule the conference a bit later in the year.I can’t wait for the conference in March!
