A paper battery is a flexible, ultra-thin energy storage and production device formed by combining carbon nanotube with a conventional sheet of cellulose-based paper.

A paper battery acts as both a high-energy battery and super-capacitor.

WHAT IS A PAPER BATTERY?

CONVENTIONAL BATTERY Vs PAPER

BATTERYGenerally Li-ion re-chargeable batteries are

used in mobiles, laptops and most of the electronic devices.

Conventional battery produce electrons through a chemical reaction between electrolyte and Metal.

Whereas, Chemical reaction in Paper battery is between electrolyte and carbon nanotubes.

Disadvantages of Conventional batteries

• EXPENSIVE -- 40% more than NiCd.

DELICATE -- battery temperature must be monitored from within, and sealed particularly well.

REGULATIONS -- when shipping Li-Ion batteries in bulk (which also raises the price). Class 9 miscellaneous hazardous material

MATERIALS AND DESCRIPTION

This energy stored device is based on two Basic,Inexpensive materials.

CARBON NANOTUBES CELLULOSE(Because of its composition and

structural features, the paper battery is not harmful and it is fully recyclable)

Also an ionic liquid provides the third component:ELECTROLYTE

WHAT IS A CARBON NANOTUBECarbon nanotubes(CNTs) are allotropes of carbon

with a cylindrical nanostructure.A carbon nano tube is a tube-shaped material, The

diameter of a nano tube is in the order of a few nanometers.

Carbon nano tube have many structures differing in length, thickness and in type of helicity and number of layers.

Their electrical characteristics differ depending on these variations, either acting as metals or as semiconductor.

HOW PAPER BATTERY WORKSWhile a conventional battery contains a number of

separate components, In paper battery all of the battery components are in a single structure, making it more energy efficient, integrated device.

. The paper battery contains carbon nano tubes, which acts as electrode. The nano tubes are embedded in a sheet of paper soaked in ionic liquid electrolytes, which conduct the electricity.

WORKINGBatteries produce electron through a chemical

reaction between electrolyte and metal in the traditional battery.

Chemical reaction in the paper battery is between electrolyte and carbon nano tube

Electrons collect on the negative terminal of the battery and flow along a connected wire to the positive terminal.

Electrons must flow from the negative to positive terminal for the chemical reaction to continue.

FEW IMPORTANT REASONS HOW PAPER BATTERIES ARE BETTER THAN THEIR

CONVENTIONAL COUNTERPARTSPaper batteries have long lasting timeThey are non-toxic as they do not involve

harmful chemical reactions. They are disposable as they are made up of

cellulose which is Bi o-degradable and non-toxic

They can be used in harsh climate conditions like extreme heat(150) and extreme cold (-75) because electrolyte doesn't involve water.

The flexible battery can function even if it is rolled up, folded or cut.

We can get 2.5 volts of electricity from a sample the size of a postage stamp.

"If we stack 500 sheets together in a ream, that's 500 times the voltage. If we rip the paper in half we cut power by 50%. So we can control the power and voltage issue."

Because the battery consists mainly of paper and carbon, it could be used to power pacemakers within the body where conventional batteries pose a toxic threat.

PAPER BATTERY OFFERS FUTURE POWER

The black piece of paper can power a small light.

Flexible paper batteries could meet the energy demands of

the next generation of gadgets.

The ambition is to produce reams of paper that could one day power a car.

The paper battery was a glimpse into the future of power storage.

CONCLUSIONThese paper batteries can reduce the weight

of the electronic gadgets. This energy storage device can be used in the

smallest and most diversely designed electronics such as cell phones,Mp3 players and medical equipment.

The use of Ionic liquid makes the device environmental friendly; A major concern in NANO technology.
