February 2019 LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Dear Members,
I hope everyone is keeping warm as we enter the mid-point of winter here at LMCC. The holidays are a distant memory and we are almost ready to think spring, but not just yet. The winter beauty of the area is enhanced by the tranquil and relaxing quietness that seems to blanket the Reservation. Although it is quiet and cold, there is still plenty to do here on and around Lake Mohawk. We have many events planned over the next several weeks, to bring us into spring. We are just coming off of our first Winter Festival which was scheduled on January 26 and will evaluate this new event and how to enhance it in the future. We are always working to create more events to bring Members together! This February we have other special events for the Membership in the Clubhouse. On February 8th we offer Kids Night Out. We had great success when we offered this fully supervised children’s party in December on the night of the Ugly Sweater Party. This time will offer Membership the opportunity to enjoy an entertaining casual night in the Members’ Room while children may enjoy an evening on their own. If you’re looking to get away from the children altogether, come out on February 14th for a little romance at our special Valentine’s Dinner. Later in the month, we have the popular Wild Game Dinner and on March 2 get ready for some laughs at Comedy Night. Watch for more information to come. In addition to the special events please come out and enjoy the company of your fellow Members in the Members' room. It is such a warm and friendly atmosphere and I truly enjoy popping in the Members' room throughout the week and conversing with our Members. As I am writing this the Lake is finally starting to freeze. If these cold temps continue, the Winter Warriors will enjoy what a frozen lake truly offers. I arrived last March, so I am eager to see many of the winter sport activities here at LMCC. Remember whether you are running, skating, sailing or just out for a winter walk: be safe, cautious and responsible. Safety on a frozen lake is paramount, you enter at your own risk, and never go alone. Also a reminder for lake front homeowners that use bubblers: be sure that your bubbler device is in compliance. We have received many calls and also notice many devices that are not approved for LMCC. Please see the Marine Services Rules and Regulations for the specifics. Enjoy all that winter has to offer this community and the surrounding area.See you at the Club,.
Sincerely,
John J. Stanley, CCMGENERAL MANAGER

WINTER WATER SAFETY
• There is always a danger on all lakes, particularly those which are spring fed, and there will be faulty places in the ice, so walking or riding on it is a hazardous pastime. Entering onto the ice for any activity is at your own risk.• Ice boating is permitted on the Lake. All persons engaging in the sport are warned that the high speeds attained mean that open water, big cracks, or faults in the ice are encountered without warning. It is good to survey the course carefully before ice boating.• Always steer clear of Tamarack Cove or other areas where groups are skating. Ice activities at Lake Mohawk, Upper Mohawk, and the Alpine Pool are reserved for Members and their guests only.• Ice fishing at Lake Mohawk, Upper Mohawk, and Alpine Pool is prohibited.• Snowmobiles and two-wheeled, multi-wheeled, tracked, or other off-road vehicles are prohibited from the Reservation, including the Lake. This is due to both the loud noise and the detrimental effect on the Reservation ecology.• Ice bubbler systems are the only approved ice retardant systems on Lake Mohawk. Ice bubbling machines are allowed along the sea walls and around individual boat dock pilings at a distance not to exceed 12". Any such machine must be electrically driven to avoid noise. No water pumps or devices are permitted. Ice bubbler systems must be inspected and approved by the Marine Services Committee prior to initial installation. Wherever an ice bubbler system is in operation, a sign shall be posted “DANGER Thin Ice.” Sign is to be at least 24 inches by 18 inches in red or black block lettering on yellow background.

A FLOATING ICY COVER
The process of lakes turning over in the fall is critically important to the frogs, turtles and fish living in our lakes. It is during this turnover period that oxygen is distributed throughout the entire water column. So how does occur? As summer transitions to fall, the surface of the water eventually cools to 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit. This cool water settles to the bottom of the lake and pushes warmer water to the surface. Eventually all of the lake water cools to this "magic temperature" and the lake is then ready to freeze. This natural cooling process is called fall overturn.

LAKE ENVIRONMENTFebruary 2019
When water freezes, it floats. This icy cover is important for the life cycles of most aquatic organisms. Ice cover controls UV light exposure, oxygen levels and nutrients in our lakes. Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water and fish survive and reproduce in waters of specific temperatures and oxygen levels. In winter most fish spend their time near the bottom of our lakes, where the food and warmest (39.2°F) water lies. Upper Lake and Alpine Pool ice over earlier in the winter than Lake Mohawk because there is less water to cool. Most lakes and ponds don't completely freeze to the bottom because ice (and eventually snow) on the surface acts to insulate the water below.Structures such as boat docks and bulkheads retain heat and warm up the immediate area, increasing the time it takes water to freeze. These structures speed up the thawing process as well. Bubbling machines also prevent ice from forming, to the detriment of our lakes' health. It is important to the ecosystem of our lake for ice to form and maintain a cover in the winter. And don't forget ice allows the enjoyment of many winter sports in Lake Mohawk!Without an icy cover, algae may bloom more and earlier in the spring and our water creatures may not survive. Consider what you can do to maintain this protective cover.
ROAD SALT CONTAMINANTS
In addition to plowing and shoveling, keeping Lake Mohawk's roads and walkways passable involves the use of road salt. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the primary deicing chemical used and is popular because it is available, relatively cheap and very effective. The reason it works for deicing is because it lowers the freezing point of water. Calcium and magnesium chloride preparations may be used by homeowners, but are more expensive options to NaCl.Actually, the road salt that is spread on Lake Mohawk roads is a 50% / 50% mix of salt and sand and is applied in order to use the minimum amount of deicing material. This practice helps reduce the amount of grit and salt to enter Lake Mohawk’s water bodies. In the spring, and sometimes in winter, road sweepers will be activated to sweep the grit off roads- further reducing the potential for material to enter our water.
Increasing use of salt on our roads and walkways can be detrimental to the environment. Salt spray from roads accumulates on roadside plants and vegetation causing “leaf burn.” This damage from dehydration and nutrient imbalance is readily visible around the Reservation. Contaminates from road salt also enter our water bodies through runoff and storm drains, possibly affecting the water quality in our lakes and impacting the crustaceans, salamanders, frogs, fish and plants living in the water. The accumulation of chloride (from NaCl) can impede lake turnover and mixing, depriving the bottom layer of the water body of oxygen and making it difficult to support aquatic life.More trucks on New Jersey roads wet the salt and apply it to roads prior to snow storms. The dissolved salt begins working sooner and results in faster deicing. In New Hampshire, the Department of Environmental Services found that pre-wetting road salt reduced salt application by 20 percent. This pre-wetted salt adheres to the pavement better than solid salt, reducing the amount of salt bouncing off the roads.Salt in our water is difficult to treat after the fact, so reducing the amount of salt homeowners use is the most effective management strategy. Removing snow before it ices is helpful in reducing slippery walkways. Adding sand or gravel to your salt can help with traction. Consider the impact on our lakes and environment as you use chemicals within the Lake Mohawk Reservation.
THANK YOU
Thanks to you, our donors, we raised a net profit of over $14,000 in 2018. We were able to provide nearly $4,000 in grants. The Foundation welcomes your ideas. SPARTA CAMERA CLUBNATURE AND WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY: A PRESENTATION BY LEESA BECKMANN AND TERRY NEFF
The Sparta Camera Club will host an evening of nature and wildlife photography on
Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30pm. The event will take place at the Sparta Ambulance building, located at 14 Sparta Avenue. This presentation is given by two award-winning local photographers including photographs taken outdoors and devoted to displaying elements such as landscapes, wildlife, plants, and close-ups of natural scenes and textures. The presentation will include answers to "How Did They Do That?" - what gear to pack, what settings to use, some editing tips, and how to tell a story with your images and stir your audience! The presentation will also include how to get the best images at the zoo.Leesa Beckmann is one of Sussex County's notable photographers. She graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA degree in Communication Design. She is known as an author and illustrator of four children's books about the adventures of my indoor pet goose, Oliver. She has had an interest in photography and nature and has been inspired by the members of my camera clubs, the Sparta Camera Club and the Vernon Camera Club.
In 2018, Leesa won Best in Show in the XPOSE, Lusscroft, Ringwood and Salmagundi Gallery photo competitions and People's Choice Awards in SCC Expo and Sussex County Farm & Horse Show State Fair. Her photograph, "On the Prowl in NYC" is on exhibit in the new entrance to the observatory of the Empire State Building.Terry Neff has been taking pictures since she was 10 years old, but her passion for photography truly ignited when she joined the Vernon Camera Club and the Sparta Camera Club 5-6 years ago. At one time she had her own home studio and color lab where she printed enlargements for herself and for a local lab - today photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop are her darkroom and she loves every minute of ‘developing’ her photos. She has won many awards locally for her photos, including Best in Show at the New Jersey Farm & Horse Show and Lusscroft competition, First Place for Still Life at the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council and several at Sparta Expo competitions and more. Terry enjoys landscape photography and has resurrected her home studio to create still life photos. Terry is currently President of the Vernon Camera Club. •

JUNIOR WOMAN'S CLUB OF SPARTA
The 2018 Wish Tree sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta was a great success. This holiday tradition is only possible with the generous support of hundreds of local residents. We collected 490
presents this year with a total value of $6,998. The gifts were donated to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency of Sussex County. Many area children enjoyed a brighter holiday thanks to the giving spirit of the people of Sparta and surrounding communities. On behalf of the Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta we would like to offer a special thank you to the Sparta Public Library for providing the tree and allowing us to use the library to collect the gifts. We are also grateful to the organizations that donated handmade ornaments for the tree, including the Women’s Club of Sparta and Girl Scout Troops (including Troops 4546, 7172, 7210, 7456, 7455, 7326, 5365, 6565, 7545, 7277, and 6569). One of the greatest joys of the holiday season is seeing the smiling faces of children. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this project and made those smiles possible. •

CLUB ENGINEERING REPORT:LAKE LEVEL DRAW DOWN: THE FACTS
The request to reduce the lake levels is more and more frequent particularly after high intensity storms which are becoming more the norm over the past few years. In 2018 Lake Mohawk Reservation experienced not
only numerous high intensity rain events, but overall record setting precipitation up to 80 inches throughout the year, 20 inches over the average annual amounts. This much rain has not only kept the lake levels high, but the ground saturated resulting in a higher groundwater table feeding new and long dormant springs. The effect is a constant flow into the lakes as well as out by way of the spillways which control the water levels of the lakes. The spillways are designed to maintain these lake levels at their historic averages from the time of original development. However, as with the precipitation, the levels of the lakes have been consistently higher than these averages causing concern for flooding of low lying shoreline properties and roadways where the drainage capacity is reduced by higher lake levels.Faced with the risks of flooding, opening the gates in the dams to lower the lakes seems a responsible action to take. But – even though the lakes in the Reservation are privately maintained and managed, they are under the jurisdiction of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Specifically, lake lowering requires a permit from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. The processing period for permit applications is two months negating the purpose of immediately addressing high lake levels. For this reason an annual permit application is currently being submitted to allow lake level manipulation throughout the coming year following the conditions set by the Division of Fish and Wildlife. These conditions are the time of year, duration of release, extent of drawdown, and protection of downstream ecosystems and property. The most restrictive of these is the time of year. No drawdown is permitted between November 1 and March 15. Summer drawdown is also restricted. The rationale for these restrictions are tied to limiting the stresses caused by fluctuating water levels on the aquatic life during critical periods during the year. With the continued trend of increased precipitation it will be the goal of LMCC to balance the natural rise and fall of the lake levels with the impacts and risks of flooding, ensuring the continued protection of healthy lakes. Starting this spring daily lake levels will be posted for you to follow!! •

Before you take the leap, here are some things you should know:
Safety issues are a concern. Homeowners in Massachusetts recently experienced a natural gas tragedy caused by too much pressure in the local gas lines. This resulted in multiple explosions, dozens of fires and one death.
Gas is being shipped overseas. Gas exports are expected to grow exponentially in the coming months and years. Less gas at home means constricting supply. Less supply means higher prices.
The cost to switch is expensive. Utilities in our area are estimating the cost to convert at $14,000 or more. And with no guarantee of future low prices, the return on investment is uncertain at best.
Thinking of switching to gas?
Paid for by the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey.
There are many reasons why many of your neighbors have chosen to continue to heat their homes with heating oil:
It’s the safe option. Heating oil is biodegradable, nontoxic, nonflammable and it can’t explode. It’s the safest fuel around.
Homeowners have maximum choice. There are many local heating oil companies that provide quick and convenient service. And you can choose which one suits you best. That’s not the case when you are dealing with a utility.
The future is bright. With the advent of Ultra-low-sulfur heating oil combined with Bioheat®, today’s heating oil is clean, green and environmentally friendly.
No matter what you decide, it pays to get the facts. For more information, visit ThinkTwiceNJ.com.

BEACHESBEACH FIVESubmitted by Eileen Hickey
Winter or Monsoon season, the weather has been rather strange this time of year. I am
told that the Farmer’s Almanac predicts March to be the snow storm month. So, we are not going to escape the snow completely. The Beach remains intact and a thank you shout out to the kayak owners who have been good to check and correct the kayaks that have blown about during the storms. Much appreciated. Our kayak racks remain very full and I will start to work on the 2019 rack assignments but if 2018 was any indication of their popularity, we will likely have no new spots available. All current renters will be asked to secure their spots early in April as to have everything set by May 1st. We will also look to have a beach clean-up in April in preparation for the new season ahead. In my search for a quick poem, I found this one from an unknown poet: “A friend is someone who knows the song in your head and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.” Happy Valentines month everyone….for a true friend is the greatest gift of love there is. Share freely and be that friend to someone who needs it.All the Best from Beach Five! Our volunteer contacts, should you need us are:President - Marlene: [email protected] Racks/Treasurer - Eileen: [email protected]

Happy New Year Beach Sixers, and to all who may be reading this! I hope everyone’s holiday
season was full of love, laughter, family and friends! It is a quiet time of year around the lake, but that doesn’t mean that things aren’t gearing up for the summer season. Please keep an eye out for Beach Six emails regarding upcoming meetings. It is just about time to start putting together an event calendar. All of these events require lots of work, please become involved and bring any new ideas to the meeting. So stay tuned, keep warm and hold onto your hats for a GREAT summer that is just around the bend!
