High Note, the Music Club

and the Cultural Committeeorganized Blow the Mic on22nd August . The event saw acrowd of people swarminginto the dimly lit music roomafter a hectic Saturday. Theshow was opened by AnkitaThakur with ‘Leaving on a JetPlane’ and ‘Monster’. Soonafter, Anagha opened thestage for the juniors with ‘Yeh

Mera Dee- wanapan’,followed

by manyincludingthe very-gifted Pri- yanka and Ashutosh.

The con-stant in-flow ofnew audi-ence in

small numbers turned into amonumental wave as soon as

Deepak took over and recre-ated the magic of the legen-dary A.R. Rahman. Arnab and Arun took the evening forward with a beautiful performanceof ‘O Megh’ and ‘But it Rained’and ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ - with Arun adding a completelynew flavour to the event withhis witty jokes in between.

New musical talents were dis-covered among the junior batch. The regulars enter-

tained the audience with clas-sic Bollywood numbers. YagnaTeja and Nabarun brought back the aura of yester years with Rock n Roll. Nitish An-and mesmerized people withhis instrumental performanceof Led Zeppelin’s Stairway toHeaven.

A duet by Deepak andKaustabh Chatterjee was thehighlight of the event. Ab-hishek Gaur surprised every-

one with a comical rap num- ber, inspired by the nation’strending favourite – Yo YoHoney Singh. Deepak and Ankita closed the night, mov-ing hearts with ‘LukkaChuppi’. The evening was a wonderful celebration of mu-sic and friendship which is anintegral part of life at IIMR.

Moonlight Serenade— Poetry Under The Starry Sky

 As, the glowing moon reached

it’s zenith, a small crowd gath-ered around the fountain, dimly lit by the streetlights. The cool breeze and driftingclouds set the mood asMoonlight Serenade, the mid-night poetry recital organized by the Literary Club started off with Frost’s ‘Stopping By The Woods on A Snowy Evening’.This paved the way for othersto come forward and sharetheir love of poetry.

Compositions such as The

Brook, Invictus and Silver bough a touch of intellectual-ity. However, self-composedpoems were the highlight ofthe night as many participantsrecited original compositionsthat talked about life lessons, hardships, love and even so-cial issues. Some others struckcloser to home by recitingpoems in regional languagesranging from Tamil, Marathiand Sanskrit, even Tagore

made his presence felt

through the heartbreakingrecitation of ‘Abar Dekha’.Shayari became an integralpart of the evening’s enter-tainment with compositionslike ‘Madhushala’. The eventtranscended the realms ofliterature on the wings ofsome beautiful voices who won the audience’s heartthrough songs such as ‘FarOver theMistyMountainOld’ and

‘Tangled’.But, howcan there be anysuch gath-ering without‘Game ofThrones’ beingmen-tioned atleast

once? Surely enough ‘The

Rains of Castamere’ and ‘TheBear and The Maiden Fair’made their dramatic entryinto the moonlit evening.

The surreal night came to aclose with a final recitation of‘Silver’ signifying MoonlightSerenade. The event was anode to the transformativepower of beautiful poetry.

Tucked in the south-west partof India, humbled by the Western Ghats and caressed by the Arabian ocean, lies thenarrow strip of land peoplerefer to as God's own country, officially known as Kerala.Legend has it that Mahabali, the just king under whose rulethe people of Kerala were at

the pinnacle of prosperity, visits his old kingdom duringOnam, the harvest festival.Mahabali's rule is consideredthe golden era of Kerala.

On August 28, 2015, theSuchana Bhavan awaited thestudents of IIM Ranchi withan ‘Onapookkalam’, the floralcarpet that symbolises theharvest festival. Flower petalsof different colours – red, white, orange and yellow – were lovingly arranged into anelaborate geometric pattern.Students paused, admired and wondered at this confluence ofcolours.

The Malayali students of IIMRanchi were dressed in tradi-tional Kerala attire of kasavusaris and white mundus. Peo-ple wished each other ‘HappyOnam’ before rushing to theirlectures. At 1 o'clock, the tra-

ditional payasam was served.Students and professors came back for more of the rich milk-and-rice sweet, and hungaround for more with contentlooks on their faces. A tradi-tional feast or ‘sadya’ was ar-ranged after the event whichserved a delicious spread ofauthentic Malayali dishes.

There was an air of joy andcelebration as happy facesstood chit-chatting and laugh-ing with their friends. In some way, Onam had brought peo-

ple together, created momentsthat would be rememberedand cherished throughouttheir lives. The spirit of friend-ship, camaraderie and univer-sal inclusion demonstrated bythe students of IIM Ranchi, isinstrumental in developing better managers, leaders, andpolicy makers of the future

who would truly contribute to building a prosperous, equal, and just society true to thetradition of Onam .

engraved on it- “This too shall

pass”.

Nothing lasts forever. Neither

the happiness nor the sorrow

times. Every moment that we

endure eventually passes away.

Sometimes they stay with us as

memories and sometimes theyare forgotten. Everything is

momentary. There is only one

thing that lasts with us forever

and that is hope.

 According to Greek Mythology,

hope was first found in the

Pandora’s box. Zeus had given

Pandora and Epimetheus a box

along with a key attached, on

their wedding day with the

strict instruction not to open it

ever. However, curiosity got the

better of Pandora. When she

opened the box, she found evil

things - envy, sickness, hatred,

disease. The world turned dark.

Pandora was disheartened. She

closed the lid of the box and

started crying. Everything was

lost and she was the one who

 was responsible for that. When

Once upon a time in Jerusalem,

Solomon the powerful and the

wealthy king wanted to test his

most loyal and trusted minister,

Benaiah Ben Yehoyada by giv-

ing him an impossible task. He

asked the minister to find a

magic ring, knowing well that

such a ring cannot possibly

exist. “If a happy man looks at

it, he becomes sad, and if a sad

man looks at it, he bcomes

happy,” he demanded. Though

Benaiah was skeptical initially,

he finally found the ring that

made the King humble. Stories

say that as soon as the King

saw the ring, he realized that

whatever he had will perish one

day. His wisdom, wealth and

power are all but fleeting. Though the ring made the king

sad, it also taught king patience

during the time of his despair.

It was a remedy for his depres-

sion. Not that the ring was

made of any special composi-

tion, but still it had the magical

power to give the King so

much wisdom. It was a basic

gold ring with only four words

Epimetheus came and saw her

dejected like that he opened the

box once again. There was still

a tiny bug lying inside named

‘Hope’. The small tiny hope on

its escape made the world free

of darkness once again. And

thus hope made all the differ-

ence in the world.

 The thought that there exists

goodness in this world is worth

fighting for. It should be reason

enough for us to live and hope.

As rightly said by JRR Tolkien

“The world is indeed full of

peril, and in it there are

many dark places; but still

there is much that is fair, and

though in all lands love is

now mingled with grief, it

 g r o w s p e r h a p s t h e

 greater.”
