Nature’s Paradise Schwarzwaldhochstrasse

Waterfalls and lakes, nature trails, monuments and towers, crags and observation towers – the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse has much to offer its visitors.Here is a sampling of just some of the sights worth seeing between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt:

Geroldsauer Wasserfall: Hundreds of rhododendron bushes transform that waterfall into a sea of blossoms between May and June.

Schwarzenbach-Talsperre: Almost 2 km long, this is the largest reservoir in the northern and central Black Forest. The Schwarzenbach, originating from the Sandsee near the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, was dammed between 1922 and 1926. The dam itself towers 65 m above the original valley floor and at the time of its construction, was the highest in all of Germany. A 6.5 km-trail rings the lake.

Hornisgrinde-Aussichtsturm: Hornisgrinde (elev. 1164 m) is the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest. Completed in 1910, Hornisgrinde Tower was closed to the public for nearly 60 years due to its occupation by the German Luftwaffe and later by the French military. In 2005 it was re-opened to the public as an observation tower. Opening times: daily during school holidays; otherwise Sat, Sun and public hols from 1 Nov to 30 Apr 11 am – 4 pm, and from 1 May to 31 Oct 10:30 am – 5 pm (subject to nice weather and good visibility).

Welcome to the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse!

Stemming from a road used solely for forestry purposes which was later built up, the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (B500) today is one of Germany’s most scenic panoramic roads.

From Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt the northern part of this holiday route covers some

60 km at elevations ranging from 600 to more than 1000 meters.

On the following pages, we’ll take you on an adventure tour where you will experience fantastic views, such as of the Rhine plain and the Vosges mountains, to waterfalls, lakes and forests, monuments and towers, to well-known hotels and restaurants and – in neighbouring valleys of the Schwarzwald-hochstrasse – to scenic cities and communities.

Experience the many nature-friendly sporting activities and attractions in the midst of the various nature reserves of the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord on both sides of the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse. Whether you are a hiker, a mountain biker, a Nordic walker or simply a nature lover – there are unforgettable experiences in store for everyone.

A Paradise of Experiences SchwarzwaldhochstrasseHiking: The Schwarzwaldhochstrasse is truly a paradise for hikers: hundreds of kilometers of signposted hiking trails lead you through quiet forests and past rocky cliffs with stunning views, inviting you time and again to stop for a short rest. For families, there are various adventure trails offering exciting outdoor experiences. You can get recommended walking routes from Tourist Information offices, recreational facilities, hotels and restaurants along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (starting Page 10).

Mountain biking: Narrow paths through dark forests and spectacular views make the area along the Schwarzwald-hochstrasse especially attractive for mountain bikers. Numerous tracks are specially marked for this sporting activity. For more information and to download GPS tracks, see www.naturparkschwarzwald.de/sport-erlebnis.

Winter sports: One of the main winter sports areas in the Black Forest can be found along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse. There are racy downhill runs for skiers on more than ten pistes and over 200 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails waiting to be discovered. For hikers, winter hiking trails offer a wonderful experience in the snow. There are toboggan runs for young and old alike as well as an open-air ice-skating rink at Wiedenfelsen/Bühlertal. Winter sports brochures are available at the Tourist Information offices.

Mehliskopf-Turm: The Mehliskopf tower (elev. 1010 m) built in 1880 is the oldest stone look-out tower in the northern Black Forest.

Mummelsee: Mummelsee is one of seven glacial lakes in the Black Forest. These “Dark Eyes” of the Black Forest are a relic of the last Ice Age. Mummelsee is the biggest (800 m circumfe-rence), deepest (17 m) and highest (elev. 1036 m) of the lakes. Today Mummelsee, with its paddleboat rentals, Kunstpfad (art trail) and more, is a favoured excursion spot in the Black Forest.

Aussichtsplattform at Schliffkopf (lookout-point): Schliffkopf peak (elev. 1055 m) is the highest point of a new red sandstone ridge towering ca. 450 m over the valleys between Hornisgrinde and Kniebis. From the ridge, when visibility is good, you can see the Rhine plain and the Vosges Mountains, the Swabian Alps and across the central and southern Black Forest all the way to the Alps. Klosterruine and Wasserfälle Allerheiligen (Abbey ruins and waterfalls): The former Norbertine abbey was built in the Gothic style between 1191 – 1196 under the auspices of Uta von Schauenburg. Waterfalls adjacent to the ruins plunge 100 m in cascades into the valley below.

The Wildnispfad (Wilderness Trail) Baden-Baden: Experience the particular features of the forest and of nature firsthand on this 4.5 km-long trail. Clamber over tree trunks, crawl under low limbs, listen to the sounds of nature in a beech cathedral or fairytale meadow, climb to treetop aeries.

The Luchspfad (Lynx Trail) Baden-Baden: Like the Wilderness Trail, this one also starts in Plättig, is 4 km long and goes through forests in which lynx would feel at home. 20 interactive stations encourage you to stalk, jump, peer and listen like a lynx.

The Grindenpfad runs 4.2 km from Mummelsee over the moor to Hornisgrinde. At various interactive stations, you can be informed of the origin and history of Hornisgrinde as well as of its inhabitants and specialties.

The Lotharpfad: On Boxing Day 1999, Hurricane Lothar cut a swath through southwest Germany. The 1 km-long adventure trail of uprooted trees impressively depicts the destruction and new growth of the forest.

The Karlsruher Grat is the most difficult rock-climbing tour in the northern Black Forest with several sections of alpine character. The 2.7 km-long trail over the rocks is narrow and there are passages where climbing is called for. The views, though, are spectacular.

The Westweg, the first long-distance hiking trail, was laid out in 1900 by the Schwarzwaldverein. This route of around 285 km is the longest of the three Black Forest long-distance trails. Parts of the trail were relaid in 2007 in order to fit the criteria of a quality trail as defined by “Wanderbares Deutschland” and was adapted to the needs of modern-day hikers. The Westweg is one of the “Top Trails of Germany”. It begins in Pforzheim at the northern end of the Black Forest, forks at the Titisee to a western and an eastern route and ends in the tri-border area in Basel.

This long-distance trail follows the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse from the Badener Höhe to Kniebis. The 19 km-long stretch from Forbach (elev. 300 m) up to Unterstmatt (925 m) and the 28 km-long stretch from Unterstmatt to Kniebis are particularly demanding. The trail goes over the peaks of Hochkopf (1038 m), Hornisgrinde (1164 m) and Schliffkopf (1055 m),rewarding strenuous efforts with magnificent views. It also goes by the “Dark Eyes” of the northern Black Forest, the Herrenwieser See and the Mummelsee as well as the Schwarzenbachtalsperre.

Active with no restraints: In its brochure “NaTouren für Alle”, the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord has put together some recommended hikes in the northern Black Forest which can be easily accomplished by those with limited mobility, even those with baby strollers.

Naturschutzzentrum Ruhestein: Founded in autumn 1997, the Ruhestein Nature Conservation Centre is located directly on the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse and, as a local institution with an attractive exhibition, hopes to play a role in which visitors experience nature firsthand while being aware of their responsibilities to the flora and fauna of this sensitive habitat.

SpecialtiesMehliskopf has one of the longest downhill ski runs in the northern Black Forest. The year-round bob-sleigh run attracts thousands of visitors annually. The Adventure-Climbing Garden ranges over 3,5 ha with 7 courses of different levels of difficulty with 80 challenges. With the downhill carts, you can take the lower lift to ride some 900 m (400 m uphill and 500 m downhill). Only in dry conditions.

It is to the monasteries that we owe our drinking culture and the popularity of beer consumption.

During the period of Carl the Great, when the first monasteries and

abbeys became established throughout our country, the monks

soon adopted the art of beer brewing. They improved the ingredients

and production methods and later discovered hops as a constitu-

ent that gives beer its ideal flavour. And so they paid an important

contribution to the traditional art of beer brewing and to the good

reputation of monastery-made beers.

We at the Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu (Alpirsbach Monastic Brewery)

continue this tradition. For generations in the possession of our

family, we feel a strong obligation towards this monastic art of

brewing which has been handed down for centuries.

From this initiative of the Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu, not only to brew

beer in the old traditional way, but also to safeguard and maintain

The wolf & bear parc plays host to both bears and wolves, which have found a new home coming out of a non species-approbiate livestock husbandry. The wolf & bear park has become a must-see attraction.
