Traditional Boxing tradition that has lasted for generations

For the people of Ngada, talking about traditional boxing or sagi is something familiar. This tradition has been going on

for generations. Sagi is a typical traditional box-ing of Ngada commonly held in the summer (dry season), between May to August each year. Sagi culture is carried out by people in the District of Soa and also other districts in Ngada Regency such as in the village of Takatunga of golewa district. Folk dances and singing called Dero is performed the night before performing Boxing event.

“In that context, I hope with the motto “develop-ment starts from the village” the noble values adopted by Ngada society continue to be main-tained to develop Ngada Regency. The Schedule of Etu is as follows :

As a maritime country that has water territory larger than its land territory, Indonesia has the oppor-tunity to become one of the main destinations of

the world cruise. But the lack of adequate port for cruise ship has contributed to the slow development of cruise tourism in Indonesia. This issue was discussed in an international seminar titled "Development of Indonesia Cruise: How to Meet the Challenge of The Increasing Tonnage and Capacity of The Cruise Ships" in Sapta Pesona Building, Jakarta recently.

However, Indonesia has become one of tourist desti-nations for small numbers of international cruise ships.

"There was an increase from year to year. In 2011, there were 178 cruise ship calls. For the year 2012 it reached the total of 215 cruise calls," said Director general of Marketing for Ministry of Culture and Tourism Sapta Nirwandar during the opening of the seminar.

Unlike other tour packages, cruise tour route has been prepared since two years ago. Thus, the number of cruise ship visits for 2011 and 2012 can be known earlier.

Some of these cruise ships can carry up to 2,000 passengers. In fact, mega cruise or new generation cruise ship with more capacity has visited Indonesia. one of them is the Rhapsody of The Seas that belongs to Royal Caribbean International with a capacity of 2453 passengers, which had landed in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Sapta Nirwandar explained that revenues from the arrival of cruise ships are quite big. Vacationers usually anchored in some tourist areas, such as Bali and NTB. They then went on tour for 12-24 hours.

"The estimated spending is US$ 50-100 per person, excluding dining onboard and other activities. In the long term, the economic impact of cruise tourism is quite huge," Sapta said.

Sapta continued, so far the main obstacle is that Indonesia does not have international-standard port for cruise ships.

Jero Wacik, Minister of Culture and Tourism said that as an archipel-ago, cruise tourism is very promising to be developed in Indonesia, just like in Miami. Even the CEo of Royal Caribbean has visited Komodo Island twice for he loves going there.

"But we admitted that we’re not yet serious in dealing with cruise busi-ness. Candidate for the new cruise port is Tanah Ampo in Karangasem, Bali. But it’s not maximal, "said Wacik.

Jero explained the need for a new vision in viewing the potential for cruise ships. Because, he continued, there is still low emphasis on the cruise ship business. For example, the port in Tanah Ampo, Karan-

gasem needs to be enlarged in order to be able to receive cruise ships without removing the anchor. Currently, cruise ships that stop at Tanah Ampo must remove the anchor at sea and guests ride the tender boat to go ashore.

"This condition that makes cruise ship operator are still question-ing about the safety issue. The incoming ships have the capacity of 2000-3000 passengers. Thus, it is too bad if we cannot manage such a huge market. We shouldn’t think about developing hotels only. There are already too many hotels," added Regent of Karangasem, I Wayan geredeg.

He added that with the cruise, the thing needed is not hotel, but a destination. This, he added, will have multi-effects due to its connection with the traders and the market.

on the same occasion, Remy Choo from Singapore Tourism Board said cruise ship penetration in Asia is still small at around 0.05 percent. Thus, he continued, the opportunity to attract Asian cruise market is still large.

"Cruiseline start seeing Asia as a destination. They depend on repeat customers and they are as customers require new destinations," he said.

According to Remy, there is a lot to offer by Asia as a destination for cultural and natural. Thus, he continued, will provide guests with a differ-

Complaining Benoa Harbor

Nikolaos Antalis also complained about poor infra-structure at Benoa Harbor, as one of the cruise ship dock location. Indonesia will not be able to accommo-date more tourists if appropriate infrastructure is not available.

"The size of the ship will be even greater. And Indo-nesia does not have to purchase a cruise ship, for accepting the arrival of the ship is enough. So why it is so difficult to build adequate port," said Antalis.

In early March 2011, cruise ship Legend of the Sea with a length of 264 meters and a capacity of 1615 passengers reportedly failed to dock in Benoa. "Actually, we have learned about Benoa and intend to dock but instead banned by the port authority. The notice came in the last minutes, and very disappointing for us," said Antalis.

If you do not want to repeat these conditions, Antalis said the pool of Benoa harbor must be deepened to 10 meters. Thus any cruise ship with greater tonnage can dock safely.

"What makes it more uncomfortable is that after passengers managed to get off at Benoa harbor, then they surrounded the taxi driver who act like robbers. Rate from Benoa to Denpasar is offered at US$ 70 (equiva-lent to Rp 600,000). It's not a proper way to treat guests," complained Antalis.

He emphasized that taxi fares should be equal to the Balinese, the Europeans and Americans. Cruise ship passengers should be treated properly.

The reason is, they will become ambassadors for promoting tourism in Bali, for example to their country of origin. "If they can get positive impression on Bali, they’ll come back and stay longer," he said.

To improve the movement of domestic tourists and further pro-mote the campaign of "Know your country, Love your country" Ministry of Culture and Tourism in cooperation with PT. Wahyu

Promo Citra held a tourism exhibition with the title "gebyar Wisata & Budaya Nusantara 2011" at the Jakarta Convention Centre from 26 to 29 May 2011, in conjunction with the Bicycle exhibition "Indonesia Bicycle Show & Expo 2011". The event exhibited 300 favorite attrac-tions in the country, from Sabang to Marauke.

Chief organizer of the event Syukur Saka explained that the exhi-bition that was held for the ninth time is the most effective means of promotion, because the visitors could get direct information regard-ing tourist attractions exhibited.

"Not only that, the exhibition is also aimed to increase the interest of the community towards bicycle as a healthy, pollution free and environmentally friendly vehicle that matches with the concept of Indonesian tourism," said Syukur Saka.

The participants consisted of 200 local government institutions (provincial, regency and district), state-owned companies, enter-prises and private sector. The participants exhibited more than 300

favorite tourist attrac-tions in the area from Sabang to Merauke, cultural products, crafts, and souvenirs as well as over 100 brands of bicycles from Indone-sia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, United States, germany and Italy.

on the same occa-sion, Director general of Marketing for the Minis-try of Culture and Tour-ism, Sapta Nirwandar, explained that the city of Jakarta is a great place to attract domestic tour-ists considering people's purchasing power in Jakarta is quite high and the need for travel is also quite high.

Sapta explained that the contribution of domestic tourists to the national tourism growth is very high even far beyond foreign tour-ists.

"In 2010, there were 234 million domestic tourist movements with a total output value of Rp 150 trillion. This is a great potential for tourism industry (travel agents) to work on," he explained.

Travelling is not only a necessity but has become the urban life-style. It is becoming a crucial moment for the region to promote the local tourism potentials.

Each participant was also given the opportunity to do a presenta-tion on their region through the event of "Presentation of Regional Tour Packages" and "Indonesia Hotels, Restaurants & resorts Table Top".

A seminar titled "Success Secrets of Tour & Travel online Busi-ness" was also held to provide successful tips to participants and visitors who are interested in travel business.

Visited by 40 Thousand People

Around 40 thousand people visited this exhibition and more than USD 7 billion of transactions have been generated.

"We as providers are satisfied with the results achieved at this exhibition and we are optimistic that in the event next year we are targeting an increase of 100%. We calculate the total transactions of more than USD 7 billion in the daytime, when the exhibition is still going on until the evening, "said Syukur.

"Easy access from Jakarta to other regions within the country and strong purchasing power of its citizens has become a major factor in the success of the gWBN 2011, but we expect that there will be a continuity in the future tourism development, especially infrastruc-ture improvements in the area. Hopefully this exhibition can be a trigger for the development of tourism in the region, "said Faried in the closing of gWBN 2011.

Faried explained that nowadays traveling has become a lifestyle, it is due to the improving national economy that directly increase people's purchasing power.

"The growth of national economy in 2010 has increased by 6.1% with an average per capita income rose by 13%, which affects the ability of people to travel. This will have direct impact on the in-creasing tourism industry and transport industry in Indonesia, "said Faried.

"We are optimistic the target will be achieved along with the im-provement of the national economy," said Faried.

Faried explained that various efforts continue to be performed by the Directorate of Domestic Promotion to make the people of Indonesia as a guest in their own country. A number of missions carried out in order to boost domestic tourist movements, such as, improving the image of destinations, facilitating direct promotion and development of all events that rely on tourism branding of Indonesia namely "Wonderful Indonesia."

Aceh Province and Sabang in particular is considered having a good prospect to be developed as a marine tourism destina-tion in the future. Aceh at least has 26 potential tourist des-

tinations to be developed as tourist destinations of special marine interest that mainly based on nature and beach.

Dini Andriani, researcher from the Tourism Research and Devel-opment Center for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Kemenbud-par) said that the region’s most popular tourist destinations namely gapang Beach and Rubiah Island Marine Park (Iboih), known by its beautiful underwater gardens.

“Although has good potentials, but tourist visits to the region both domestic and foreign are still fluctuating. Accommodation is also available in gapang Beach and Rubiah Island Marine Park, “she said.

In gapang, there is one cottage and two bungalows while in Ru-biah there are 17 bungalows. The overall accommodation in Rubiah is much better than in gapang.

So far the kind of tourists visiting the region is generally those who like high-risk adventure, aged 27-30 years and most of them have diving certificate.

Most of foreign tourists visiting those sites are from America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. This is a great sector to manage considering diving is a captive market, especially with the great potentials of marine tourism in Aceh. Thus Dini said, the Tourism Research and Development Center has recommended improving the competitive-ness of tourism products of special interest especially in Sabang to boost marine tourism in Indonesia, and Aceh in particular.

“In addition, currently, protection of marine natural attraction has become an urgent matter, limiting the diversity of marine activities, while maintaining more conducive security post-peace agreement. There should be an attempt to maintain the environmental quality and hospitality of the local people, “she said.

“I recommend increasing availability and quality of accommo-dation and restaurant services and the utilization of direct flights Malaysia-Aceh, Malaysia / Singapore-Aceh via Medan optimally. In addition it is necessary to develop an integrated package of marine tourism in cooperation with dive operators or travel agents from Ma-laysia and Singapore, “she said. The number of foreign tourist visit to Papua for a month is around 50 people. The number has been decreased compared to 2010, which reached 100 people per month. To provide tourist with suf-ficient information about Papua, travel agents in Bali are ready to assist the local government of Papua and West Papua. Bali Travel agents will promote and sell tourism products of Papua to foreign and domestic tourists.

Azad University Team cycling team became the first champion of Tour de Singkarak (TDS) 2011 after the last

stage (7B) confirmed themselves as the fastest team with a record time of 53:37:46. TDS last day was on Sunday (12 / 6) with the distance of 745 kilometers consisted of 7 stages across 12 districts and cities in West Sumatra.

Second place went to the Hong Kong team in a time of 54:10:41, while Indo-nesia’s Prima Utama, which is preparing for the Southeast Asian (SEA) games in November, finished third in 54:13:51.

Promoting West Sumatra

Tour de Singkarak (TDS) 2011 made the province of West Sumatra as world tourism destination. Interesting blend of interna-tional cycling competition with Indonesian tourism, especially Ranah Minang is considered to be successful in promoting Indonesia's tourism tagline "Wonderful Indonesia."

TDS which lasted 6 to 12 June 2011, fol-lowed by 13 teams from 17 countries, this amount increases compared to last year.

"The participants are now increasing. The team was even bigger, this means that

the trust of the international world to West Sumatra is greater," said Sapta Nirwandar, Marketing Director general of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Kemenbudpar).

Sapta Nirwandar said, every region passed by participants of TDS has certain uniqueness, attractiveness, and tourism potentials. Each stage passed displayed the uniqueness of different cultures.

Tour de Singkarak 2011 was covered by around 70 printed and electronic media, as well as involving international media partner Eurosport.

"We expect to follow the success of the Tour de France and make Tour de Sing-karak as annual national events," he said.

TDS has seven stages as long as 793.3 kilometers, to win a total of U.S. $ 75,000 prize. Entering its third year, the score of TDS 2011 had reached 2.2, almost follow-ing the Tour de Langkawi, in Malaysia with a score of 2.1 (has been held for 18 years).

Payakumbuh, Sawahlunto, Tanah Datar, Padang Panjang, Solok, and the District of Solok.

This indicates that West Sumatera is potential and ready to serve domestic and foreign tourists visit in large numbers at the same time.

"This will be a tourism revival in Indo-nesia, particularly in Sumatra," said Sapta Nirwandar.

The event is also already become the annual official agenda of the World Cycling organization (Union Cycliste Internation-ale), which is held by Kemenbudpar, with the Executive Board of the Institute of Sport Bike Indonesia (PB ISSI), and local governments.

Cycling participants, spectators, tourists, communities, all went to see directly the natural beauty of West Sumatra wrapped in the unique customs and hospitality of its people. Almost all the way through routes passed by the riders, the people cheered and expressed their joy and pride watching Tour de Singkarak.

Meanwhile, the governor of West Suma-tra, Irwan Prayitno said TDS is considered to have many positive impacts (multiplier effects). Therefore, this event has boosted the development of regional infrastructure, and opened access to market and invest-ment area for the hospitality, transportation, culinary, crafts, and tourist attraction.

"This event is effectively introducing tourism of West Sumatra which has 19 districts. We have had 12 districts involved. This year TDS adds one tourist destination, the Harau Valley at Stage 4," said Irwan.

Accor International is increasingly developing its network in Indonesia and in 2011, Accor will complete the construction and open seven new hotels. The seven new hotels scheduled

to open this year are Pullman Jakarta Central Park, Mercure Ban-jarmasin, Mercure Bali Kuta Harvesland, Mercure Padang, Ibis Bali Kuta, All Seasons Bali Denpasar, and All Seasons yogyakarta.

According to Michael Issenberg, Chairman and Chief operating Officer of Accor Asia-Pacific, Accor continues performing hotel de-velopment considering Indonesia's economy that continues to grow, which increases the volume of business travel and tourism.

"Accor group with its broad and diverse hotel chain located in Indonesia has strengthened Accor’s brand recognition. In develop-ing its business, Accor plans to open 21 new hotels with a target until 2014," he said.

Lombok Regency has great tourism potential, including the indigenous villages where people do everyday activities in traditional ways of Lombok. one of them is Sade village, in the

district of Pujut, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province

Sade Village has obtained assistance from PNPM Mandiri for Tourism since 2009 and in 2010 has succeeded in becoming the fourth winner in tourism village competition organized by the Minis-try of Culture and Tourism.

In this village you can see how Sade villagers perform daily activi-ties. The men work as farmers and the women work as weavers.

Wandering around Sade village you can find some women who are busy weaving using traditional loom, ranging from spinning cot-ton into yarn to weaving the yarn into special and beautiful woven cloth. Here you can buy their handicrafts at negotiable price. It is said that many foreign tourists decided to stay longer and learn how to weave there.

Sade village is inhabited by about 152 family amounted to around 900 inhabitants, located on land that is surrounded by fields and rice paddies, with a distinctive shape of house. Life in Sade village that is inhabited by the Sasak tribe has a tradition which authenticity is still maintained well.

Their houses were built from wood and woven bamboo, and the roof is made from dried reeds. The terrace is not too large with 3 steps heading to the top floor that serves as a bedroom – bale dalam. Inside you'll step on the non-plastered floor. The floor is made from clay dough which is coated with buffalo dung and straw ash. Once a week they mop the floor using buffalo dung to repel

mosquitoes.Each house has a barn that has unique shape, its roof tapering to

the top with a large window, and four supporting poles. There is also a rectangular building with no walls commonly used as a gathering place for villagers as well as a place for the women to weave.

In every house in Sade, there is a simple loom, made of wood – some are even have been used by three generations. The weaving materials are processed by the women, from cotton seed into yarn. This is generally performed by the elderly women. Weaving yarns are colored using plants and leaves. However, for certain woven linen, the yarn is purchased in the market. Woven cloth made by Sade women has colorful pattern, very unique and beautiful.

Weaving is a special ability that must be learned by the Sasak women since childhood, and some have started weaving since the age of six. At elementary school age, little girls of Sade usually learn their skills by knitting colored yarn to make accessories such as bracelets, necklaces, headbands, and so forth. These handicrafts are sold at the village entrance hall, and at the edge of the house.

Along with development of communication and technology, Sade villagers expand their interaction with visitors, either domestic or foreign. Information from mass media has changed the life of some of Sade villagers. The source of income becomes vary. The men who used to be working mainly on farm, now can also work as a tour guide for tourists. For women besides being a housewife and help their husbands on the farm, some of them also trade, but more importantly they must continue weaving activities. According to custom, if Sade women are not yet adept at weaving, they are not allowed to get married. This is the main requirement for Sade women to be able to go up to the altar.

Besides beaches, lakes can be alternative place to visit to enjoy the beauty of nature such as Lake Singkarak that is located in the Province of West

Sumatera, exactly in the two districts, namely Solok and Tanah Datar. The water in this lake is clear and calm with charming surrounding scenery that make this lake is always crowded by visitors, especially during holidays. It is also due to its location that is very strategic and acces-sible.

Lake Singkarak covers an area of 107.8 km2 and is the second largest lake on Sumatra Island after Lake Toba. Aside from being a tourist attraction, the lake is also used to drive hydroelectric generators (PLTA Singkarang).

Being in this area provides visitors with incomparable tranquility. Looking at the crystal clear water with its small ripples just make anyone cannot take their eyes off of the lake. This island is relatively less known especially within the country because it takes quite an effort to reach this island. You must go first to Balikpapan from Jakarta, Surabaya,

yogyakarta or Denpasar, to go to this island. It takes ap-proximately two hours by plane from Jakarta to Balikpapan.

From Balikpapan, you still have to fly to Tanjung Redeb for one hour with a small plane that served by KAL Star, Deraya or DAS. In addition, Tanjung Redeb can also be reached by sea, using a ship from Samarinda or Tarakan to Tanjung Redeb and proceed with the rented motorboat to the island of Derawan with travel time of approximately 2 hours.

Many foreign tourists who had just got off the plane at the Kalimarau airport, Tanjung Redeb Derawan rushed to the island by motorboat which was moored at a specific port.

Another alternative could also through land route from Balikpapan to Tanjung Batu and from there crossed over to the island of Derawan. It's just that this is not a good choice because of it takes hours with a relatively unpleasant track.

Even so, there are a lot of foreign tourists who already knew more about the existence of this exotic island. A num-ber of Japanese tourists from Tokyo through the local travel agent visited the island through directly from Singapore or to Sabah and then continue the trip to Balikpapan, then to Tanjung Redeb using a small aircraft.

to aid underprivileged communities in Bali, Bali Hotels As-sociation (BHA), via its Community Relations Department, has an-nounced three new initiatives that continue this commitment to the community: one Hotel one orphanage, Assistance for the Disabled and Blood Drive. With these programs, BHA aims to improve the quality of life in communities where its members operate by sup-porting key initiatives and responding to community needs through financial contributions, donations and volunteer service.

By far, there are already 70% BHA hotel members that have adopted the one Hotel one orphanage program. Each member adopted an orphanage located in the Singaraja, Muntigunung, Karangasem and Bedugul areas. They provided support to the or-phanage in the form of items such as sembako (basic needs), linen, clothes, beds and pillows. Educational facilities such as computers, furniture, stationery and books were also provided. Members also regularly conduct periodic visits, extend invitations to their hotels, provide training opportunities for orphans at BHA hotels and pur-chase items made by the orphanages.

In cooperation with various Ngos in Bali—including the Volun-teer Services organization, yakkum Bali, yayasan Senang Hati and yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi—BHA provides support by hosting visits, hosting trainees for the disabled and assisting in re-cruiting trainees for the disabled. Every month, BHA hotel members also take turns to host a blood donation program alongside Palang Merah Indonesia.

Almost the whole year Sawu is dry, this far east in Nusa Tenggara the dry and hot winds blowing from the Australian continent have a major impact to the local climate. There is

The gongs are named according to the way they beat the gongs and the following is an example of gong accompanying ‘Ledo Hawu’ dance: ‘Leko’ is the first two gongs beaten one after another, ‘Didala ae, Didala iki’ and ‘gaha’ are three medium size gongs (bass gongs) beaten successively, ‘Wopeibha’ and ‘Abho’ or two gongs beaten accompanying ‘Leko’ gong, ‘Wo Pahelli’ or two gongs beaten accompanying ‘Leko’ and ‘Paibho Abho.’

SAVUNESE LADIES’ WEDDING CEREMONY

(1) Spoken day or ‘hari lodo’ is the day when male’s group with a spokesman ‘mae miki’ go to the female’s house to talk about a Marriage customs which is called “pell’. (2) At this stage the male’s group offers ‘Rukenana Ae’ (big betel-nuts) and a huge pig to the mother-in-law’s house.

(3) At this stage, the male’s party brings ‘kenoto’ through a cer-emony of ‘pemaho ru kenana ae’ and a life pig to the female’s parents ‘ house.

(4) The ‘kenoto’ is opened (boka kenoto) by the female’s relatives witnessed by all ladies of the ethnics who helped at the time the lady was born.

(5) The fifth step is ‘Nga’a Kebue’ that is eating together at the male’s house to collect all things for dowry.

(6) The sixth step is the male’s relatives bring articles for dowry to the female’s house.

(7) The male’s relatives bring the lady to the male’s house. (8) Next step after the wedding night, the bridegroom with all the

relatives brings the bride to her parents’ house to run a ceremo-ny called ‘maho amu’ (entering the house).At this time, officially the lady leaves her ethnics.

TRADITIONAL EVENT AND TOURISM OBJECT IN SABU

Pahoru/Wodho take place in Sub Regency of Sabu Barat which about 1 kilometres from the main city of Sabu which called Seba. This ceremony take about a week before harvest time, this cer-emony held involved several group by casting each other feet in the opening area.

KOWAHOLE DANCE and ceremony take place in Sabu. Kowa-hole Dance. Kowa means boat or ship, hole is ritual for Sabunese following the Savunese callender in Savu tribe. This is ritual is like thank givings ceremony by sending a few part of harvest to the place of where the anchestor soul are, and probably where the gods are residing. This dance is also chance of begging apologizing for all misbehaviour in the past, and ask blessing for next season.

There are three boats being used in this ceremony, the first boat is to bring their product that just being harvested, the second boat is to delete stranger footprint (fomerly, outsider are thought to bring bad destiny for island, and are not allowed in Sabu island), and the last boat is to bring offering for the anchestor soul.

LEDO DANCE is a dance from Sabu island which normally held as part of the funeral ceremony. The three couple dance tremend-eously according to the rithym of music, and the sometimes dancer swords touch each other according to the rithym, and happy smile of the dancer is part of the attraction.

Ledo is a very expensive funeral ceremony, this ceremony take place for nine days and nine nights with a sacrificing of animal for each night. and surely this ceremony held for the king family or for the rich family.

Angklung As A World Cultural Heritage

If you claim to know the typical Indonesian art, you must know angklung. It is a typical musical instrument from West Java that is still played by the students at schools. Fortunately there are peo-

ple who still remember this valuable cultural heritage and preserve it through keep playing the instrument in their performances.

It is still not known yet when angklung began to be played in In-donesia. However, the oldest angklung found is as old as 400 years old. It is called Angklung gubrag that was made in Jasinga, Bogor, West Java. In Serang, this type of angklung is considered to be a sacred instrument used as accompanying music in repelling mantra to heal a sick person or to against disease outbreaks.

Angklung is known to come from West Java. However, angklung is also found in some areas in Indonesia. In Bali, angklung is played during the ritual of Ngaben. While in Madura, angklung is used as musical accompaniment in a parade or traditional procession. In South Kalimantan this traditional musical instrument is used as musical accompaniment for the attraction of Kuda gepang. History

records that in West Kalimantan, there was also angklung, but ac-cording to some cultural figures, angklung does not exist anymore in this area.

In 1938, Daeng Soetigna created angklung based on diatonic sound. Aside from being musical accompaniment in spells read-ing, initially, angklung is played in certain ceremonies, such as rice planting ceremony. However, with development of this instrument, angklung is also used in traditional art performances to entertain people.

In the Dutch colonial period, angklung was a musical instrument that evoked the spirit of nationalism. Therefore, the Dutch govern-ment banned angklung playing, except when played by children and beggars because they did not give any effect.

After experiencing many ups and downs, Daeng Soetigna has managed to raise the status of Angklung. In fact, angklung is acknowledged by a great musician Igor Hmel Nitsky from Australia

in 1955. Angklung with diatonic sound created by Daeng has made angklung also recognized by the government as a means of musical education.

After the death of Daeng Soetigna, angklung is further developed based on the music of Sunda, which is salendro, pelog, and maden-da. Udjo Ngalagena is the one who developed angklung based on Sundanese music. Udjo which was one of Daeng Soetigna students was developing angklung in 1966.

In an attempt to maintain the art of angklung, Udjo or known more as Mang Udjo built the center of angklung production and develop-ment. The place was named "Saung Angklung Mang Udjo". Its loca-tion was in Padasuka, Cicaheum, Bandung. Angklung performing arts are often held in this place. Visitors who attend can participate and try to learn to play the instruments.

The presence of woven products in Flores particularly Ngada District has a very long history. There is no record in particular on how the ikat weaving culture initially presents in Ngada

daily activities. Ikat woven, seen from the traces of the world history was spreading not only in the Asian community, but to Central and South America, as well as Japan, even people who were in the trade route of “Silk Road” knew and inherited this valuable treasure until now. With a presence that spread in various parts of the world, including in In-donesia, despite the uniqueness of different techniques and motifs, weaving can be said as a common cultural heritage of the world community.

Woven products have long been used as everyday wear by the community. Woven products are also sold for its value. Traditionally, weaving serves as a symbol of status, wealth, power, and dignity, including in the District of Ngada. Therefore, ikat is so uniquely and specifically made and associated with these symbols. In each sheet of ikat cloth, the motifs become more than just a picture. Each motif has a very deep meaning which is a form of embodiment of a sym-bol of ethnic, religious, traditional rituals, and special symbols that form certain motif as a representation of the society. Associated with the motifs, techniques, manufacturing processes, and its origin, an ikat cloth is considered by the local people to have certain magical powers and their use should only be associated with traditional ritu-als and traditional leaders.

Similarly, each ikat woven of Ngada is a firm representation of the society. Every ethnic has their own motifs and techniques that dis-tinguish one ethnic group to another. Even in each ethnic group has special motif, which is used only by certain clans. Those who do not know the philosophy behind ikat woven will not be able to differenti-ate between ikat woven of Ngada and Nagekeo. Both are blends of songket fabric to the ikat woven. However, a closer and careful look at both fabrics, we will be able to see special difference in the mo-tifs. Therefore, ikat woven is more than just a fabric, but a journey of history where we can browse and learn a society with different values of life that is so unique, deep, and meaningful.

Ikat woven are traditionally manufactured and it is not a mass-

manufactured product. Every piece of ikat woven contains the emotions, desires, and feelings of the weaver during the weaving process. In general, the process of traditional woven cloth is divided into four stages, namely a stage in making spun yarn, motifs bind-ing, coloring stage, and the last is weaving. overall, it takes at least three people to make a piece of woven fabric.

The first stage the handspun yarn process, which consists of cot-ton harvesting (pupu kapa), cotton drying (Wori kapa), separation of cotton from the seeds by using traditional tools (ngeung kapa), smoothing process of cotton (weting kapa), preparation for spinning by making cotton in the form of rolls (klepi ogor kapa), then is spin-ning with traditional tools (jata kapa). In the second stage, which is the pattern making, consists of sev-eral stages namely weft preparation (wolot kapa), perentangan thread in pemidang tool (goan kapa), preparation of a rope or bind-ing material (lepa ubun / tepuk), until the stage of motifs binding (pete kapa).

The third stage is the making of dyes and staining on the threads that have been bound in accordance with the desired motif. The first step of this stage is different from one to another depends on the desired color. Last process after dyeing is drying before the threads that have been colored is woven.

Nila leaves (Indigo sp) are usually used to obtain blue or black color. Nila still grows wild in many parts of Flores. The leaves that have been harvested (reit tarun) are then immersed (long kapa) and fermented to obtain indigo paste (open tarun). The pasta is the one used in the next coloring process. The number of dyeing (long Tarun) plays important role in obtaining light to dark blue or black. yellow color is usually obtained from turmeric and the bark of jack-fruit tree. The process is begun from the harvesting of materials, which is in local language called “ali nguni – taper nakat olan.” Then grinding / pulverization (wai guni nakat olan), dyeing (gebor guni nakat olan), then drying (woi kapa perun).

The red color is obtained by using candlenut, dadap leaves, loba leaves, roots of Morinda citrifolia tree, and talinbao leaves. Har-vesting materials in local language called “ali buke bur”, “ou padu

roun”, “talinbao Roun”, “blata Roun ‘. Having obtained the materials, the process of making basic color called “Koja gelo” is begun us-ing candlenut, papaya leaves, and dadap leaves. At the end of the process, the thread is dried (Wori kapa) and then enters the second stage of the coloring process. This process is mixed morinda leaves with loba leaves. The threads are dried again after the dyeing. The green color is obtained from bean leaves and nila leaves. The process is quite similar to the coloring process that has been explained previously, except that the brown color is obtained from morinda leaves and mangroves.

once the threads are dyed in accordance with the motifs the weavers are working on, the last phase, namely weaving is begun. The process begins by opening the binding of motifs, rearranging motif and stretching the yarn between the patterned-yarn, hardening of the thread which typically uses bean starch from tamarind seed, crating a weft path, weft preparation, and weaving itself. The duration of the process of making a fabric depends on size and materials used. In order to get good color quality (drying and wash-ing resistance), it must be done many times with the right mixture. A large cloth usually takes three months for coloring process (stain-ing and fermentation). For timeless colors of the plants can only be obtained from nila leaves (blue and black), also the color of the mengkudu roots (red Morinda).

In Ngada district, there are some villages known as the centre of ikat woven production among others are Langa in Bajawa district and Tiworiwu in Jerebuu District. These villages are gathering plac-es of weaving groups. Weaving is usually done by female weavers who mostly are the elderly and very patient in working on weaving for days, while the young women only help them. Woven fabric with high level of difficulty can only be made by experienced wavers, in this case is the elderly or matured women.

It takes a lot of time and energy to make a woven fabric. It re-quires high level of patience and accuracy, so it is very unfortunate if we only look at the results of the fabrics but do not know how the process of making a woven fabric.

The tourism industry plays a key role in economic devel-opment, but employment in the tourism industry and its economic value has not been measured. In Indonesia, the

tourism industry's contribution to gross national income reached more than 3%, and the number of tourists continues to grow into 7 million foreign tourists and 122 million domestic tourists.

This sector also offers a wide range of job opportunities, from unskilled to skilled jobs. The industry is also attractive to manage-ment level working in the field of hospitality, catering, and other activities.

According to Peter van Rooij, Director of International Labour organization (ILo), in a press release stating tourism is crucial for job creation. However, overall employment in the tourism sector and the economic value still has not been measured and studied properly and adequately.

"In fact, statistics play a key role in determining policy and plan-ning products, marketing and promotion through identification of market resources," he added.

At least 155 countries have adopted codes of ethics of the world tourism industry in an attempt to provide best ser-vices to tourists visiting the country. “Since the formation of

the United National World Tourism organization, many countries have adopted code of ethics composed by UNWTo,” said UN-WTo Secretary-general Taleb Rifai in Nusa Dua, Bali, Saturday (11/06/2011). After the opening of “Seminar on Tourism Ethics For Asia And The Pacific”, Taleb said, each country adopts the code of ethics differently.

Some countries included it in their tourism regulations, but some just slip it into other regulations. “So, countries that have agreed to adopt codes of ethics of the world tourism is directly as-signed the responsibility for its implementation,” said Taleb Rifai. The tourism code of ethics has 10 chapters. Therefore, every country that has signed the agreement is expected to implement the rule. “We expect countries that have signed the agreement to apply the code of ethics in their country,” he said.

Regarding the membership of UNWTo, Taleb said, there are no binding requirements; it is all on voluntary basis. “Membership is based on a voluntary basis. However, we expect the countries that have not joined to immediately participate in the UNWTo. This is very important to advance the world of tourism,” he said. Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik said Indonesia had joined since this institution established considering that tourism sector is also one of nation’s economic mainstays. “We’ve joined the UNWTo, and therefore we have a responsibility to adopt and implement codes of ethics of tourism,” he said.

The seminar which was held for three days until Monday (6/13/2011) followed by about 160 people from representative countries in Asia and the Pacific.

From 811 units of villas in Bali, only 425 villas that possess official permission (license) and the remaining 386 villas are included in the category of illegal.

Chairman of Bali Villa Association (BVA) Ismoyo S Soemarlan said that the attempt of BVA to control the legality of villas in Bali is not yet maximal. Therefore, BVA will continue performing social-ization in order to reduce the number of illegal villas.

"There are four reasons that make BVA has no sympathy on illegal villa in Bali. Firstly, such villas do not contribute to the local governments in the form of local revenue (PAD)," he said.

Secondly, they do not create a healthy competition, treats human resources in accordance to their wishes and do not well maintained the environment, and even harming the environment.

"There are many illegal villas built on fertile land or on the edge of a cliff, like paddy fields or on river edge. It's obviously damaging the environment," he said.

He added that due to these illegal villas, there are quite many tourists who stay there become a target of thieves or robbery, because those villas are not equipped with a standard security guard.

Herman will travel as far as 30,000 km through 25 countries in the world. Previ-ously, in 2007 he has succeeded to travel as far as 1,000 km on foot for 33 days. Upon this success, he recorded in the MURI (Museum Record of Indonesia).

"I have prepared myself for walking around the world since 2003. From 2004

until 2010 I have walked as far as 8,000 km," he explained.

Herman said that the trip is not merely carried out to break the record, but also to promote Indonesian tourism. The trip is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Tujuh grup kesenian dari lima negara ikut am-bil bagian memeriahkan Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB) ke-33 yang akan berlangsung sebulan

di Taman Budaya Denpasar, Bali dari tanggal 10 Juni hingga 9 Juli 2011.

"Kelima negara itu adalah Jepang yang meli-batkan tiga grup kesenian, serta Amerika Serikat, India. Malaysia dan Australia masing-masing satu grup kesenian," kata gubernur Bali Made Mangku Pastika di hadapan Presiden yudhoyono pada pembukaan PKB ke-33 di Ardha Candra Taman Budaya Denpasar, Jumat lalu.

Presiden membuka resmi PKB sekaligus dimu-lainya acara Utsawa Dharma gita (lomba pem-bacaan ayat-ayat suci agama Hindu) XI tingkat nasional dan "Bali World Culture Forum".

Presiden yang mengenakan busana adat Bali lengkap dengan destar (ikat kepala) didampingi Ibu Negara Ani yudhoyono dan sejumlah Menteri Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu II, antara lain, Menteri Dalam Negeri gamawan Fauzi, Menteri Agama Suryadharma Ali, serta Menteri Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Jero Wacik.

gubernur Pastika mengatakan, khusus tim kesenian Malaysia, selain ikut dalam pementasan, juga tampil dalam pawai budaya bersama duta seni utusan dari delapan kabupaten dan satu kota di Pulau Dewata, yang akan dilaksanakan pada Sabtu (11/6), mulai dari depan bangsal Jaya Sabha hingga Taman Budaya, tempat berlang-sungnya aktivitas PKB.

Keikutsertaan seniman asing dalam PKB kali ini sama dengan jumlah PKB tahun sebelumnya yang juga melibatkan tujuh tim kesenian dari Jepang, India, Amerika Serikat, China, Australia, Spanyol, dan Singapura.

gubernur Pastika mengakui, keikutsertaan grup seniman mancanegara dalam arena PKB setiap tahunnya bervariasi. Pada PKB 2009 tercatat 14 grup kesenian asing tampil pada aktivitas seni tahunan di Pulau Dewata.

"Pada PKB 2008 tercatat 18 grup dan PKB 2007 sebanyak 12 grup kesenian juga dari Jepang, Amerika Serikat, Singapura, India, Korea Selatan, Thailand, Inggris, dan Malaysia," katanya.

gubernur Pastika menjelaskan, selain tim kese-nian mancanegara, juga tercatat 24 grup kesenian dari 16 provinsi di Indonesia yang ikut menye-marakkan pesta tahunan seni di Pulau Dewata.

Ke-16 provinsi tersebut antara lain Jawa Timur, Jawa Tengah, Jawa Barat, Sumatera Barat, Sumatera Utara, Lampung, Riau, yogyakarta, Ka-limantan Barat, Kalimantan Tengah, dan Jakarta, masing-masing tiga grup.

"Sedangkan Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Barat, Aceh, Sumatera Barat, Sulawesi Utara, dan Ter-nate masing-masing mengikutsertakan satu grup kesenian," katanya.

Kehadiran seniman asing ataupun grup kes-enian dalam negeri mempunyai peran penting dalam memberikan warna terhadap pelaksanaan PKB.

"Selain itu, mampu menumbuhkan kerja sama dan kebersamaan, tukar-menukar pengalaman dan pengetahuan sebagai upaya memperkaya khazanah budaya bangsa," ujar gubernur Pastika.

Kementerian Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata (Kemenbudpar) menggelar kembali Lomba Foto Sadar Wisata 2011 dengan tema Peran

Masyarakat dalam Menggalakkan Sadar Wisata di Destinasi Pariwisata melalui Penerapan Sapta Pesona.

Bakri, Direktur Pemberdayaan Masyarakat, Ditjen Pengembangan Destinasi Pariwisata, Ke-menterian Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata (Kemen-budpar) mengatakan, pesona keindahan alam In-donesia sebagai objek wisata amat menarik untuk diabadikan melalui foto.

‘’Dengan kegiatan lomba foto ini, diharapkan dapat lebih meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat dalam menerapkan butir-butir Sapta Pesona (aman, tertib, bersih, sejuk, indah, ramah, dan ke-nangan),’’ ujar Bakrie pada wartawan di Jakarta.

Lanjut Bakri, hasil karya foto terbaik dari seni fotografer dalam lomba foto itu pun, diharapkan dapat menginformasikan dan menyebarluaskan peran masyarakat dalam pengembangan kepari-wisataan. ‘’Karya foto terbaik akan masuk dalam nominasi juara lomba dan dipamerkan pada acara

pameran foto di Mall Artha gading pada 22-24 Juli mendatang,’’ ujar Bakri.

Bakri mengharapkan, para penggemar dan ko-munitas fotografi di seluruh Indonesia ikut berper-an serta menginformasikan daerah tujuan wisata di daerah masing-masing dengan mengirimkan karya foto.

Hasil karya itu nantinya dinilai para juri seperti, Sigit Pramono (ahli fotografi), Arbain Rambey (ahli fotografi), Darwis Triadi (school of Photography), Hilda Sabri (media massa), dan Bambang Wi-janarko (Komunitas fotografi Budpar).

Ahli fotografi Sigit Pramono, menambahkan, melalui lomba foto sadar wisata ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara dan domestik.

Juri dari media massa Hilda Sabri menambah-kan, lomba foto sadar wisata tidak dipungut biaya dan terbuka untuk umum. Jumlah foto peserta pun dibatasi maksimal 5 foto, dan dikirim ke Sekretariat Panitia Lomba, gedung Sapta Pesona Lt 4, selam-bat-lambatnya 24 Juni 2011.

Tujuh film asing dijadwalkan syuting di beberapa wilayah di Indonesia pada 2011, kata Dirjen Nilai Budaya, Seni, dan

Film (NBSF), Kementerian Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata, Ukus Kuswara di Jakarta belum lama ini. Ukus menjelaskan, tujuh film asing itu di antaranya berasal dari Amerika, Eropa dan Australia.

“Tahun ini sebanyak 7 film asing akan melak-sanakan syuting di dalam negeri. Judul film tersebut adalah The Dream Bold, Filosofer, The Java Warm, dan gate Away,” ujar Ukus.

Sementara itu, Direktur Film Direktorat Nilai Budaya, Seni dan Film, Kementerian Kebu-dayaan dan Pariwisata, Samsul Lusa mengata-kan, lokasi syuting yang dipilih berada di hampir seluruh wilayah di Indonesia.

"Lokasi syuting yang akan mereka datangi di antaranya Bali, Raja Ampat, Papua, dan sejum-lah wilayah di Jawa dan Sumatera, dan banyak wilayah lainnya," katanya.

Namun demikian, Syamsul belum menda-patkan bocoran bintang terkenal yang akan berperan dalam film-film tersebut.

"Belum ada bocoran namun yang pasti akan lebih heboh dari film Eat, Pray, Love yang mengambil syuting di Bali," katanya.

Menurut Syamsul banyaknya negara saha-bat yang tertarik untuk syuting di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa keindahan Tanah Air telah terkenal hingga ke mancanegara.

"Ini sangat bagus untuk promosi bangsa ini dan bisa mendongkrak jumlah wisatawan lokal maupun asing yang berkunjung ke beberapa wilayah yang dijadikan lokasi syuting," katanya.

Demi lebih mempromosikan destinasi di Indo-nesia Kemenbudpar mengikuti Location Mart, sebuah event yang menjual tempat-tempat untuk lokasi syuting di Los Angeles, Amerika Serikat pada 6-9 Juni 2011.

Location Mart, kata Samsul, merupakan sarana promosi wisata dan diharapkan bisa mendongkrak jumlah wisatawan lokal maupun asing yang berkunjung ke beberapa wilayah yang dijadikan lokasi syuting.

“Saya mengharapkan lokasi-lokasi tersebut dapat dipelihara (untuk keperluan syuting inter-nasional),” katanya.

Indonesia memiliki ragam obyek wisata memikat yang tersebar dari Sabang hingga Merauke, keaslian alam dan adat budaya jadi

daya tarik utama destinasi di Indonesia. Namun sebagian kecil masyarakat Indonesia masih tertarik berlibur ke luar negeri dengan berbagai alasan, salah satunya gengsi dan rasa bangga bisa berlibur keluar negeri.

Padahal justru banyak pesohor dunia lebih tertarik bisa berlibur dan menikmati alam di Indonesia. Masih ingat dengan Putri Diana (alm) yang rela menghabiskan libur tahunannya di Pulau Moyo, Nusa Tenggara Barat dan pentolan band Rolling Stone, Mick Jagger yang sering mengunjungi Bali serta baru-baru ini Pangeran Albert dari Monaco yang pada Desember 2010 lalu sekeluarga menghabiskan liburan akhir tahun nikmati keindahan Raja Ampat di Papua dan masih banyak lainnya. Mereka rata-rata mengatakan indah, natural dan eksklusif, bah-kan dengan bangga menceritakan akan keinda-han alam Indonesia saat kembali ke negaranya.

Faried Moertolo, Direktur Promosi Dalam Negeri, Kementerian Kebudayaan dan Pari-wisata (Kemenbudpar) mengatakan perlunya promosi yang intensif di dalam negeri agar masyarakat Indonesia lebih tertarik berlibur di dalam negeri mengingat potensi besar dimiliki Indonesia.

“Destinasi di Indonesia mempunyai kualitas alam lebih bagus dan beragam, dengan keas-lian yang masih terjaga, ditunjang kekayaan adat budaya serta bermacam ragam kuliner se-nusantara menjadikan liburan didalam negeri lebih bergengsi dibanding negara tetangga lainnya, yang relatif lebih sedikit ragamnya,” ujar Faried saat ditemui di Jakarta Convention Center.

Liburan didalam negeri tidak kalah bergengsi, Faried memberikan contoh ada resort di Raja Ampat, Papua yang memasang tarif cukup tinggi. Bagi wisatawan asing bisa menginap disana merupakan kebanggaan tersendiri, mer-eka beranggapan berlibur di Raja Ampat sangat bergengsi dan elit.

“Dari segi harga destinasi di Indonesia cukup murah dan variatif, tersedia berbagai pilihan dari kelas bawah, menengah atau atas. yang jelas kita jauh lebih murah dibanding negara tetangga

terutama dalam hal akomodasi dan makanan. Tidak benar jika ada yang mengatakan paket wisata dalam negeri lebih mahal dibanding keluar negeri,” tegas Faried.

Demi lebih menggiatkan berwisata kedalam negeri, Ditjen Pemasaran, Promosi Dalam Neg-eri Kemenbudpar menggelar pameran wisata di pusat-pusat keramaian secara rutin dengan program “Direct Promotion”.

“Pameran ini lebih banyak melibatkan swasta seperti, biro perjalanan, hotel dan juga maska-pai penerbangan yang semuanya menjual destinasi didalam negeri. Hampir setiap bulan kami gelar dan tempatnya berpindah-pindah ke kota-kota besar di Indonesia,” terang Faried.

Dengan target wisatawan menengah ke bawah diharapkan program ini bisa menjadi magnet bagi masyarakat Indonesia untuk lebih mencintai dan berwisata didalam negeri sendiri, seiring dengan kampanye “Kenali Negerimu Cintai Negeri” dan “wonderful Indonesia” yang selalu dikumandangkan Kementerian Kebu-dayaan dan Pariwisata Indonesia.
