Paradoxy: Creating Christian Community Beyond Us and Them Imagines a Radical “Middle
Way” Forward for the Church
Christianity is moving toward a religious realignment of epic proportions. Where does your congregation stand?
How will you navigate these changes? Paradigms that have guided the Church for centuries are crumbling.
The old dichotomy between “conservative” and “liberal” that has defined us for centuries is rapidly becomingirrelevant. Does the Church have a future? Does the future have a Church? How and where will we come
together as a Christian people for the future?
Paradoxy: Creating Christian Community Beyond Us and Them by the Rev. Ken Howard, with a foreword
by Emergent Evangelical Brian McLaren and an afterword by conservative theologian the Very Rev. Dr. Paul
Zahl, is a book for those who want to explore what it means to truly BE THE CHURCH in these interesting and
challenging times, and for those who want to lead the Church into its future.
A Christian of Jewish origins, Ken Howard has been an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church since
1993, focusing on church planting and congregational vitality. Prior to ordination, Ken was a consultant inorganizational development, strategic planning, and conflict resolution. Ken holds a Master of Divinity degree
from Virginia Theological Seminary, with honors in Church History for his ground-breaking research into the
Jewish origins of early Christianity, published in Jewish Christianity in the Early Church. Respected and
trusted for his expertise in conflict resolution and consensus building among groups with opposing theological
and political views, Ken has been called upon to facilitate dialogs on issues ranging from human sexuality to
interfaith relations.
When not occupied with the business of pastoring and growing the theologically diverse congregation he
helped plant, Ken is available for presentations, workshops, and coaching on the concepts outlined in
Paradoxy .
With Discussions Questions and Biblical Reflections after each chapter, Paradoxy is ideal for use in study
groups, seminary courses, confirmation classes, ecumenical dialogue groups and individual study. Church
leadership at all levels, statuses and theological dispositions -- conservative, liberal or somewhere in-between -
- will find this book useful in guiding their flocks.
“Here is a direct method for churches and congregations to begin their discussions about inclusion, defining
their evangelical style, calling new clergy, elevating the laity, and bringing out the gifts of the excluded in their
communities. I am in awe of the scholarly writing and descriptive passages.” -- Mary W. Farkas.
If you want your church to survive and thrive in these turbulent times, Paradoxy: Creating Christian CommunityBeyond Us and Them is an essential read.
