Treasurer’s Report, or 1+2 = 4 Farr TYAV Members will be pleased to know that their association finds itself in the strongest financial position it has been in for many years. Much of this success is due to the efforts of our former Treasurer, Dawn Tormey and our former President, Ron Tormey. Dawn quietly and diligently held the position of Treasurer for our association for many, many years and I dare not try and guess for exactly how long for to get the numbers wrong in my first month as the new Treasurer would be most embarrassing. Well done and thank you, Dawn!! As things stand, (as at August 22, 2012) the Association holds a CASH BALANCE of $5,487.25, and is debt free. Because of this solid financial position, your Committee has elected to reduce the annual membership fee, as detailed in the recent mail out to you. Laurie and I look forward to seeing you at some of the many FARR events planned in 2012 / 2013. Greg Parker Treasurer with training wheels!

From the President’s Desk

As you know after the first AGM was abandoned, as we did not have a quorum for the meeting, we proceeded to a second AGM a week later. Again there were insufficient numbers for a quorum, so after the 30 minute rule applied, a quorum of 5 members was sufficient and the AGM proceeded. Following acceptance of the previous year’s minutes, treasurer’s report etc a new committee was elected. Ron Tormey resigned as President/Secretary , Dawn Tormey as Treasurer, Peter Smits as a committee member and Malcolm Knight as racing committee member and as Bill McCormack is the Association Auditor he resigned from committee duties. Our thanks to all of the above and especially Ron & Dawn Tormey for what they have done for the FARR Association over the years.

The new committee appointed is: Andrew Johnston President Colin Clark Vice President and Secretary Greg Parker Treasurer Ron Tormey Committee & YV Representative Maurice Furlan Committee and Newsletter Herman Van Winchen Committee Dawn Tormey Committee As the FARR Association has been on a decline over

the past few year the new committee’s first objective will be to address this. Since that meeting I have been inspired by the enthusiasm of the committee to get things moving and a calendar of events has already been drafted and will continue to be updated throughout the year. The first date to note on your calendar is the Trailable Division Yachting Victoria Dinner at docklands and a table, or two, of FARR members would be great to see. I will sail my boat up for the evening from St. Kilda so join me in this or meet us at Docklands. More details are to be found in the newsletter or on the web site. Again I believe YOUR Association has an enthusiastic committee that wants to promote the FARR Trailable Yachts and give the Association's members an entertaining, active and fun experience as members. To maintain the committee’s enthusiasm we need your support and attendance at the functions being organised for us all with a common interest as FARR owners, past owners or those we would like to welcome as future FARR owners. I will be out of action shortly for about 3 weeks but hope over the next couple of months to be in contact with you all to get your idea of the direction you want to see the Association go.

Renmark to Blanchetown Saturday 29th September – Sunday 14th October

Leaving Renmark on Monday 1st October and arriving in Blanchetown on Friday morning 12th October. 12 days on the river.

A group of us cruised this section in 2004 and had a great time. It is a particularly interesting and scenic part of the Murray River with a lot of history. See the publication ‘MURRAY RIVER PILOT’ by Baker – Reshke.

A short story introduction of my Camino walk in Spain 850 km

For some years I have had the intention to do the Santiago de Compastella pilgrim walk and finally we decided to make it a good holiday, two months in Holland and one month in Spain walking. Well to sum it up, it can be quite difficult, cold wet windy ect climbing and going down slippery, stoney and muddy tracks, ok for a donkey but challenging with a 12 kg backpack , but on the end of the day after a shower, a glass of beer and sit around with newly made friends feet up, its ok.

The first day starts in St Jean Pied de Port , an historic site declared by UNESCO in France not far from Lourdes in the foot hills of the Pyrenees mountains, a lovely little town not unlike a ski resort town pilgrims and souvenir shops abound, looking for my first night accommodation. I had decided to relax and go with the flow sort of thing, arriving by plane in Biaritz near the ocean a French holiday town. I stood outside wondering how I would get to St Pied de Port, everybody seemed to have something organized, train, taxis, buses. I just stood there and thought better do something? I walked over to a bunch of people near a mini bus, the driver busy on his mobile looked a bit nervous. I asked could I come with him , no booked out , I waited some more and he said ok come ,apparently 4 people booked didn’t turn up, my luck 15 euros and one hour later I was in St pied de port, on the pavement with a

12 kg backpack. I just sauntered up the steep street and walked into an attractive old looking albergue just lovely. I payed 10 Euros and i had a bed - a dbl bunk in a room with 20 or so other pilgrims. Well it all felt so easy I looked around town and decided to eat at the albergue 8 Euros, that is about 10 dollars thanks to our dollar having appreciated in the last year or so, from 60 to 80 + cents. If you want to eat well go to france even at this very reasonable price I had a three course dinner and it was very tasty simple and very satisfying and you meet your walking companions, I quickly forgot the names but remember the ambiance and all the anticipated walks, I also met a sweet young Dutch girl that sat next to me in the plane to Biarritz and had just finished her university degree in psychology. We started and walked the following first day, well surprise surprise a 1500 meter climb and 1200 meter descend to Roncesvalles 27 km . Boy a km doesn’t seem far but climbing it is more like farr. It was cold windy and rainy , it feels you’re never going to get there and you do what you shouldn’t do, you keep looking how far up is it every time you come to the top there is another top higher than the one before and yet again, the wind blew my poncho to shreds my Dutch girl companion needed just as much brakes as i did, you stop along the way for a coffee in a wayside cafe bar come albergue you ask with great expectation for a nights’ accommodation, but sorry its full, many a younger walker got there well before us, so no choice, up you hoist your backpack and on you go and eventually there is the top , see the photo . Then all seems downhill that’s right , its downhill and sometimes very steep and you got 12 kg on your back trying to push you downhill over slippery stones and muddy tracks and when you finally arrive in Roncesvalles in an old monastery there are literally hundreds of pilgrims and 27 km seem like a 127 but once you have processed your overnight accommodation boots off near the entrance you have done the biggest slog in your life and you are now going to sleep in a room with at least 50 others young not so young male female and one rule, good manners. After shower warm clothing a drink and exchange with other walkers and into a huge dining room for a hundred and more pilgrims dinner, basic simple but nourishing you soon find your way to your up or downstairs bunk bed and on your way to the proverbial angels. The morning seems far away but it isn’t 5 o clock in the morning you hear the first sounds of what will be a regular sound ,plastic bags and zippers going zip zip, try a Safeway bag and first thing in the morning next to your partner you open and close and crunch your bag and open and close a zipper it sounds like, unbelievable intrusive sounds, you want to sleep a little longer, no sir get out and up its useless you can’t fight it, some walkers start their get up and pack 5 am and you should be on your way also 6 o’clock daylight so come on get up. In a couple of days all this will be routine, you get up you go to the dunny you might have to wait your turn and soon learn to take some toilet paper just in case it has run out just as you get to sit down and yes its quite dark where ever you go and very bright in the loo so when you go back to your bunk you can’t see anything you’ve been temporarily blinded and where is my bunk ??? ok more the next letter. Christmas Celebration at Lysterfield Park – Sunday November 25

Lysterfield is a delightful National Park and quite well developed. It has extensive tracks for walking, pushbike riding (the Commonwealth Games mountain bike event was held at Lysterfield Park in challenging conditions) but there are numerous other level tracks as well and trails set aside for horse riding. The Park is quite big. As I said last meeting there is a small sailing boat club there as well with boat ramp (no outboards). Joan and I take our kayaks there in the warmer months and it takes us around an hour to curcumnavigate the lake so the volume of water is quite large. There is good parking and all the roads etc are sealed. It can get busy if it's a nice day but then so does everywhere. People would need to bring chairs or a picnic rug but I would recommend the chair as there are numerous kangas at times that like the grass. Bad weather is a major problem as there simply isn't enough shelter and you'd need to have some-one get there early to grab one of the ones there. I'll stick up my hand for that as it's only 30 min or so from home back towards the city. I could take a BBQ as well as I know how choked up it can get when everyone wants to cook. If you look on Google earth it is'nt far off the Monash freeway and you can see how big it is. Suggest people bring a pushbike as it is really worthwhile. A sailing dingy like a pacer or OK, 125, hobie etc could be a hoot. I don't own one but if I did I'd bring it! There is a good beach near the BBQ facilities as well.
