Fun Facts

Paraguay is one of Latin Americas most bilingual countries. Almost all of Paraguayans speak Spanish and Guarani. They have a large percent of citizens speak a different language.

Palacio de los Lopez is Asuncions White house. This building was ruled for decades in the mid- 19th century. Unfortunately, during the War of the Triple Alliance the Lopez family did not survive. Paraguay thought that they could take over Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. They now have guards blocking the doors.

The Recycled OrchestraFavio Hernan Chavez Moran is the director of the Recycled Orchestra. Favio helps children get an idea of how to play their instrument. All of these instruments are made out of trash. The idea of this is to form and orchestra filled with recycled trash. Kids who are in the Recycled Orchestra cannot afford real instruments. Many kids practice 24/7 because they believe that they are truly great full for their instruments. Drinks and FoodParaguayans have their own soup and tea. The soup is called Sopa Paraguaya. Legends say that Carlos Antonio Lopezs cook accidentally added corn flour to a more liquid lunchtime dish. Fortunately, Lopez liked it. This soup contains cheese, onion, and corn flour. The tea is called mate. Mate is popular in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Some like it hot, but Paraguayans prefer it chilled in the suffocating summer heat. Spiderweb LaceParaguay has many iconic crafts. On the Spanish island of Tenerife nanduti is being made. Nanduti is an embroidered lace. The word itself means spiderweb in the Guarani language. The weavers use geometric patterns and different colors that embellish their designs. In downtown Asuncion, protected by a guard, the Panteon de los Heroes is a domed shrine housing the remains of the figures who led their country into conflict with neighboring countries. They started in the 1860s, before the War of the Triple Alliance, but it wasnt finished until 1936, after the Chaco War with Bolivia. A couple of unknown soldiers are a token presence.
