ethics MCLE. The Community Affairs event for

July benefits the Kern County Heart Gallery and

we will be accepting cash donations to benefit

means its time to renew your membership for the

upcoming year. We have included a copy of the

current membership application for your use—

please return them to Shontice Yates.

August

For our Community Affairs opportunity for August, KCPA is collecting cash donations to benefit The Kern County 999 Foundation, an organization whose mission is to recognize and honor Kern County's fallen peace officers who gave their lives 'In The Line of Duty' serving the citizens of Kern County, and provide support to the family members left behind.

PARALEGAL OF THE YEAR NOMINATION

My nomination for Paralegal of the Year is Cathy McDonel. Cathy has worked for Jennison & Dodds, LLP for twenty-two years and she is the glue that holds our office together. This is no small feat for a person that never intended to become a paralegal. Cathy married young, raised her kids and entered the workforce later in life. Employed at first by a bank, she worked her way up to a manager position. Eventually the bank got bought out. The new owners kept existing employees long enough to win customer loyalty then let them all go. This did not stop Cathy. Patrick Jennison hired Cathy McDonel as a legal assistant after initially telling her she was overqualified. Cathy went on to prove that she is a highly capable paralegal. Cathy came to Jennison & Dodds, LLP with a high school diploma and worked under an attorney to earn her paralegal title. Cathy greets most of the clients at Jennison & Dodds, LLP by name and treats them like old friends. She specializes in corporate law, estate planning and probate matters. Cathy can type up a dictation with amazing speed and the attorneys have come to rely on her so much that dictations geared for Cathy might be impossible for another, less-experienced paralegal to understand. Patrick Jennison is her primary attorney and he has the ability to give out five assignments with a single sentence. He writes so quickly, the resulting penmanship resembles

J.R.R. Tolkien’s elfin alphabet. Cathy may be the only paralegal able to read Mr. Jennison’s writing and keep up with his pace. I have worked as a fellow paralegal with Cathy for eight years. When I came on as a green newbie, Cathy knew the answer to all of my questions. She could easily do my work as well as her own. She made the easy transition to my new job possible. Paralegals work in an environment where extreme attention to detail is of great importance. Cathy can see a mistake before it happens. Our associate attorneys go to Cathy with questions about filing fees, office accounting, the billing program, database program and proper formatting for Court pleadings and Recorder paperwork. Not only that, but Cathy has a personal life that is as organized and inspirational as her dedicated work ethic here at the office. Cathy attends birthday parties and graduations for all of her 8 grandkids. She puts her family at the forefront of her life to the point that staff in our office will go to Cathy for an opinion on big life choices and tricky family situations. Cathy is the model paralegal and any office would be lucky to have her. She rarely gets recognition for all of the hard work she puts forth and I would love to see her receive the KCPA Paralegal of the Year award for 2015 in recognition of all of her years of dedication. She is an inspiration to me. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Kristen Foster
