FOREWORD CHEF DE MISSION

When the Covid-19 pandemic invaded the world and the decision to postpone the Olympic and

Paralympic Games was taken in 2020, all our athletes’ hopes were ripped to shreds. For the first time in history, the Paralympic Games had to be post-poned. A heavy but necessary decision to make.

Today, as we march towards this historical edition of the Paralympic Games, we can only admire the cour-age and resilience of those who have been working hard to make these Games happen. The athletes, of course, who have sacrificed so much to get selected in 2020 and had to do it again for 2021. The IOC and IPC who also demonstrated unprecedented levels of cooperation during these more than challenging times.

But we also need to pay tribute to the Japanese people for organising the Olympic and Paralympic Games in such an extremely difficult context. They did it not only to honour the commitment taken when they decided to run as a Candidate City but also to give us back hope, turning on a light at the end of the tunnel.

Pursuing that light, along with so many nations of the world, Paralympic Team Belgium stands proud and is ready to write history again.

Making it to the team that represents our country at the Paralympic Games is never an easy task, yet

this time, it has been particularly tough. But our ath-letes know all about challenges. They’ve faced many in their lives, and have overcome them all. Last year, their dreams got shattered, but here they are again, ready to inspire and excite all of us with amazing sport performances in Japan. As we believe the Paralympic Games are the number one event on this planet that can give a voice to the many, many millions of disabled all around the world, we cannot be more proud to send out a strong team of 31 Paralympian and 1 pilot (para cycling) to Tokyo. Their performances and stories will help us further develop the Paralympic movement in Belgium and act as a catalyst of societal change, improving perception towards disabled in our country.

We are ready for this new adventure, it may finally begin! But we are aware this would never have been possible without the significant support of our loyal private and institutional partners, as well as the BOIC. Last year, more than ever, they have proven to be unconditional supporters of our Movement, and the number one believers in what our athletes can achieve.

With our strong delegation, counting some of the biggest champions on the planet, and an amazing support team behind the athletes, we are convinced that we will once again show the world what our coun-try is capable of.

ABOUT TOKYO 2020

The Japanese capital had to wait one more year to become the first ever city to

welcome the biggest sports events on the planet for the second time in history, after already having hosted the 1964 edition. But here we are, finally. Athletes from all over the world are ready to fly to Tokyo and are excited to take part in the 16th edition of the Paralympic Summer Games.The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee had to make the most difficult decision last year, postponing the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time ever. Since then, they have been working every day to ensure the

safest environment for everyone following one of their most important principles: “Striving for your personal best”.The 1964 Games completely transformed Japan, according to the current organisers. This is the main reason why the country hopes that the legacy of the 2020 Games will contribute to promote future changes throughout Japan, but also the entire world. Accepting and respecting differences in all their forms is one of the impor-tant messages they want to highlight, to encourage people to feel united in diversity. The emblem’s design, composed of three varieties of rectangular shapes, is one of the numerous ways through which they promote it. 4400 athletes from all over the world will compete in 540 medal events in 23 different sports (*). Badminton and taekwondo were added to the program for the first time. Of the total number of athletes set to take part, approximately 1750 will be women. ABOUT PARALYMPIC TEAM BELGIUM

The Belgian Paralympic Committee and the disability sports federations, Paran-

tee-Psylos and Ligue Handisport Franco-phone, will count on a strong delegation of 31 athletes and 1 able-bodied para cycling pilot to represent our country in Tokyo in 10 different sports (*).

Five years ago, at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, 29 athletes defended our colours in 8 sports. This year, with participants in two additional sports – goalball and para archery –, the Paralympic Movement in our country has again raised the bar.

With four reigning Paralympic champions and multiple world and European medal-lists, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Team Bel-gium has high hopes to match the Rio 2016 results. Because despite the difficult period, several athletes have again opened our eyes in the last few months and have proven that they are able to take up the most complicated challenges. Paralympic Team Belgium can therefore be ambitious and hope for 10 medals in Tokyo.

Our growing ambition is the result of all efforts that our Movement, its stakeholders and partners, have made these last years. Meeting these expectations would be the best way to reward all the people working for and supporting the development and the professionalization of para sports in Belgium, day by day.

(*) Para cycling track and road are considered two

different sports.

NOW IS THE TIME TO STARE

On the Road to Tokyo, more than ever, Paralympic Team Belgium wanted to

open the of the public and convince them of the amazing things people with disabilities can achieve despite having a disability.

That is why a campaign was launched with a candid camera video, filmed in the city of Brussels. Four Paralympians (Gitte Haenen, Klison Mapreni, Ewoud Vromant and Joachim Gérard) serve as examples that people with disabilities are often stared at in the streets. But when they achieve amazing sport performances, still not enough people watch. So: Now is the time to stare!

With this original campaign, we want to change how people look at disabled. We use the -emoji to call onto the public to beyond the impair-ment of people with disabilities like our athletes. Our athletes deserve all your support on their road to victory and want you to cheer for them, just like you would cheer for our Olympians. We want people to watch our Paralympians for their eye-opening sporting achievements, so they can learn to look at the abilities of people with an impairement around them.

A big boost of the campaign will be launched just before the Games, calling onto all Belgians to show their support for our Paralympians. So follow our pages to discover some of the actions that will be set-up just before and during the Games.

CAMPAIGN

Originally developed as a means of rehabilitation and recreation for people with a physical disability, it rapidly evolved into the

internationally competitive sport on show at the Games today. Para archery has been included on every Paralympic programme since 1960. The object of the sport is simple: to shoot arrows as close to the centre of a target as possible and aim for the gold ring. Athletes compete with both recurve bows — distinctive as the limbs curve outwards at the top — and com-pound bows, which feature mechanical pulleys, telescopic sights and release aids to assist inaccuracy. The distance and size of the target differ in each category.

14 Paralympic Team Belgium Guide

At the first Paralympic Games in Rome 1960, the para athletics

competition featured 31 athletes from 10 countries. Today, it is the biggest sport on the Games’ program, offering a wide range of competitions and events, open to all impairment groups (physical, visual, intellectual). Traditionally, these competitions take place in the Olympic Stadium. Five years ago in Rio, Paralympic Team Belgium conquered 4 medals in para athletics.

Boccia, which means ‘ball’ in Italian, is played by athletes who have any

kind of neurological impairment affect-ing their motor function. The sport made its Paralympic debut at New York 1984 and is now practised in more than 75 countries worldwide. Boccia is a game of high strategy, in which the athletes aim to throw or roll leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball called ‘jack’. In this sport, a single shot can reverse fortunes.

Cycling road made its Paralympic debut at the 1984 Games, held in New York and Stoke Mandeville, while cycling track made its debut at

Atlanta 1996. Depending on their physical impairments, riders use a bicycle, tricycle or handbike, while visually impaired athletes share a tandem with their pilot. Like in Rio, Belgium will compete in both disciplines, and Paralympic Team Belgium will have medal contenders in several events.

Considered the most artistic of the equestrian sports and used as the groundwork for all other disciplines, para-dressage tests

the ability of the athlete and horse to perform set routines, with the exception of the Freestyle to Music. Achieving this level of unity and competing at Paralympic level takes years of practice and requires skill and trust.

Para-dressage first appeared on the Paralympic programme at the 1984 Games. It is a gender equal sport with both male and female athletes with any type of physical or vision impairment. Like for London 2012 and Rio 2016, our country qualified as a team for Tokyo and will be represented by the maximum of 4 athletes.

Goalball, a unique sport for visually impaired, is played by two teams

of three blindfolded players on a court of 18m by 9m. The aim is to score by rolling the ball at speed into the opposition’s goal, while the other team attempts to block the ball with their bodies. Today, goalball is played in more than 100 countries. lt was added to the Paralympic program as a full medal sport in Arnhem 1980, while the women’s competition first featured at the 1984 Games.Our national men’s team, called the ‘Belgian Bulls’, qualified for Tokyo after winning a bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships.

Paralympic swimmers at Tokyo 2020 will compete in freestyle, backstroke,

butterfly, breaststroke and medley events. Para swimming is second only to para athletics in the number of athletes participating at the Games. The wide variety of swimming styles embodies the Paralympic motto, Spirit in Motion, reflecting the strong will of every Paralympian. On the Paralympic program since Rome 1960, swimming has always been one of the most popular sports at the Games. Today, athletes with physical, visual and intellectual disabilities can qualify for the Paralympic Games.

NIS Table tennis is played throughout

the world and has been part of the Paralympic program since the first Games at Rome 1960, when wheel-chair athletes competed. Events for standing players were first included at the Toronto 1976 Games. Table tennis only became an Olympic sport at Seoul 1988, so the Paralympic equivalent has a longer history.The sport is accessible to athletes with a wide range of impairments. These are categorised into physical and intellectual impairments, with the physical impairment class divided into wheelchair and standing groups. Matches are played as the best of five sets with 11 points in each set. Paralympic Team Belgium has two Paralympic titles to defend.

From the humble beginnings in the seventies, wheelchair tennis has grown at an amazing rate, not least because it can be

played on any regular court with no modifications needed to the playing equipment. It also follows the rules of tennis with one key exception: the ball is allowed to bounce twice, and only the first bounce must be within the boundaries of the court. All match-es are played over the best of three sets.Wheelchair tennis was introduced as a full medal event at Barce-lona 1992 and has appeared at every Games since then. The sport is fully integrated into all four Grand Slam events, while more than 150 tournaments form the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour, which began in 1992.
