From the rabbi’s Desk“Do you solemnly swear or affirm that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?”

“I do.”

Though there wasn’t formal training for this in Rabbinical school, over my relatively short career I have appeared in court on behalf of others at least a few dozen times. Often it is to testify on a divorce matter, but I have also served as a character witness on drug issues, financial disputes and even a false rape accusation. Remarkably, more often than not, the occasions that I have been asked to come to court have fallen during this time of the year, in the month of Elul. As I sat in a courtroom again just this week, I noticed the many comparisons we can draw to the great court dates we will all face just a short time from now on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, and the lessons we can learn: 1. Fate – The tension, anxiety and uncertainty in a courtroom are palpable. All parties, including highly skilled legal counsel, know that they can advance the most persuasive arguments and provide the most compelling evidence, but ultimately the judge - and the judge alone - will rule in their case as he sees fit. Despite all of their efforts and pleadings, the fate of the litigants is solely in the hands of the judge who will determine their future. There is much we can learn from observing the temperament, behavior and disposition of those appearing before a human judge.

As we stand before the Almighty, how can we better truly feel and acknowledge that our fate is in His hands?

2. Decorum – The decorum in a courtroom is impeccable. The parties all dress formally, given the seriousness of appearing before a Magistrate. There is an absolute and total intolerance for talking, eating, ringing cell phones, noisy children, or anything else that will either distract from the proceedings or compromise the prestige of the courtroom. How is the decorum in God’s courtroom? Do we create an atmosphere that is equally intolerant of distractions and frivolous conversation? Do our dress and behavior reflect the seriousness and majesty of the forum in which we stand and the reason we are there?

3. Preparation – No lawyer or client walks into a courtroom without having prepared. The strategy is devised, the witnesses are prepped, and opening and closing arguments are scripted and rehearsed. Many hours are spent in preparation before appearing before the judge in an effort to achieve a favorable result. The gemara in Berachos tells us that the early pious Jews would spend an hour in meditation, preparing to pray. How much preparation do we do? Do we dedicate a few moments to clear our minds and focus our thoughts before making our presentation before the Judge of Judges?

4. Swearing In – I find it noteworthy that before a witness testifies, the court asks him or her to swear in God’s name that he or she will tell the truth. Implicitly, the statement acknowledges God’s existence and the consequences of dishonoring His name by lacking fidelity to the truth. The court assumes that the fear of God will prevent any witness from violating his oath to tell only the truth. Jewish law also mandates taking an oath in certain circumstances. The gemara explains that invoking God’s name will automatically elevate the seriousness with which the witness approaches his words. Our words matter, particularly in a courtroom, and using them accurately, appropriately and with integrity speaks to our very credibility as people. Do we always say what we mean and mean what we say? Are we honest, truthful and precise when reporting experiences to others? Does the fear of God lead us to be honest with God -– and ourselves?

5. Record – Every courtroom has either a stenographer sitting and typing each word that is uttered, or a recording device that captures everything that is said. Lawyers, witnesses and litigants must choose their words carefully, for once they are expressed they enter the record for posterity. The mishna in Avos teaches us to know Who is above us and therefore to recognize that an eye is always watching, an ear is always listening, v’chol ma’asecha b’sefer nichtavimv – and all of our deeds are recorded forever. Do we live with a cognizance and consciousness that what we say and do matters and that they enter the record of our lives, even when nobody is around to see it?

6. Contempt of Court - Part of the proceedings I observed this week included an accusation that one party had been in contempt of court for not following a court order. The judge turned to the accused party and said, “Do you understand that when I issue a ruling, if the other party can supply evidence that you knowingly and willingly disobeyed me, I will find you in contempt of my court and there will be great consequences? I can throw you in jail, and you will remain there until you obey my judgment.” Do we honor and obey the rulings of the Judge of Judges? Do we recognize that our choices have consequences and we are accountable for what we do? Are we in contempt of God’s court?

The comparisons could go on, but it is evident what I am trying to communicate at this solemn season of the Jewish year. Sitting in a courtroom in the month of Elul is, I have found, among the best sources of inspiration and motivation to prepare for the Days of Awe so that they are, indeed, awesome days of prayer, introspection, reflection and growth. I hope and pray that none of us has to appear in a courtroom as a litigant. But should you find yourself there as a witness or juror or prospective juror, take advantage of the opportunity to observe and learn and find inspiration for your appearance in God’s courtroom in the hope that you will find favor in His eyes and secure a favorable outcome from the Supreme Judge.

kI TAvOBikurim. The Torah recounts the ceremonies surrounding the bringing of the Bikurim (the first fruits of the 7 “Minim” [species] brought to the Kohein). The donor was then to recite a prayer of thanksgiving recalling how Hashem delivered his ancestors from Egypt and brought the new generation into a land flowing with milk and honey.

Ma’aser. The Ma’aser (10% of the crop) of the 3rd year of the Shemittah cycle was to be given to the poor, following which the donor would offer a prayer declaring that he had obeyed the commandment to set aside Ma’aser for the Levi, orphan, and widow.

Several Ceremonies. Moshe and the Elders then instructed the people to observe several ceremonies once they crossed the Jordan river: They were to erect large stones on Mt. Eival and clearly inscribe on them all words of the Law. They were to build an altar of stones and sacrifice burnt and peace offerings thereon. The acceptance of the Law was to be ratified by the Twelve Tribes as follows: six Tribes were to stand on Mt. Gerizim, representing the blessings; the other six Tribes were to stand on Mt. Eival, representing the curses. The Levi’im were to stand in the valley between the mountains and proclaim curses on those who performed certain sins (and blessings on those avoided them). The Tribes were to respond to each blessing and curse with “Amen” (“truth”).

The consequences of their behavior. The people were warned about the consequences of disobeying Hashem’s commandments. If they observed Hashem’s words, they would receive numerous blessings (e.g., prosperity, the subjugation of their enemies, etc.); the alternative would lead to disaster (e.g., disease, famine, death, being overrun by a cruel nation, and scattered and again being enslaved).

pARSHA q & AqueSTIONS - pARASHAT kI TAvO1. How does one designate Bikkurim?2. Who shakes the basket containing the Bikkurim?3. When during the year may Bikkurim be brought? Until when are the special verses recited?4. Someone declaring that he separated Terumah and Ma’aser says: “And I didn’t forget.” What didn’t he forget?5. What were the Jewish People to do with the 12 stones on Mt. Eval?6. Six tribes stood on Mt. Eval and six on Mt. Gerizim. Who and what were in the middle?7. Who “causes the blind to go astray”?8. How does one “strike another secretly”?9. Eleven curses were spoken on Mt. Eval. What is the significance of this number?10. How is the manner of expressing the curses in Parshat Bechukotai more severe than in this week’s Parsha?

pARSHA SummARy

ANSWeRS - kI TAvO1. 26:2 - When he sees the first fruit ripen on a tree, he binds a piece of straw around it to mark it as Bik-

kurim.2. 26:4 - The Kohen places his hands under the hands of the one bringing it, and they wave the basket

together.3. 26:11 - Bikkurim are brought from Shavuot until Chanukah. The verses are recited only until Sukkot.4. 26:13 - To bless G-d.5. 27:2 - Build an altar.6. 27:12 - Kohanim, Levi’im and the Holy Ark.7. 27:18 - Any person who intentionally gives bad advice.8. 27:24 - By slandering him.9. 27:24 - Each curse corresponds to one of the tribes, except for the tribe of Shimon. Since Moshe didn’t

intend to bless the tribe of Shimon before his death, he did not want to curse them either.10. 28:23 - In Bechukotai the Torah speaks in the plural, whereas in this week’s Parsha the curses are men-

tioned in the singular

BRS OuTReACH RevOluTION Dear Rabbi Broide,

I’m writing this letter because I feel I owe you a whole lot of thank you’s for everything you’ve done for my boys. They’re my whole life; what me and my husband work for and worry about always. We sent them on this trip – TJJ, because we love Israel and wanted them to learn about the country that my family comes from. We wanted them to have this spiritual and beautiful experience before they go to college. What they came back with is something I couldn’t have thought would ever happen. My son wears Teffilin, Davens everyday and keeps Shabbat. For me

this was the biggest change I have ever seen in my children.

What you do is very special, the way you reached out to my children. They also felt part of something like they have never felt before. My son felt part of the “Broide Bunch”. Thank you once again, keep doing what you do; you bring Mashiach closer to us. Shana Tova U’metuka,A friend

HAlACHIC queSTIONS OF THe WeekQ: If I talk by accident after washing for bread before making ha’motzi, must I wash again?

A: As long as you did not become so distracted that you forgot you were about to eat a meal, a Hefsek (break) of talking does not require you to wash again. In fact, if you need to talk for the purpose of the meal such as to ask for a knife, salt, etc. it is permissible to speak and unnecessary to gesture.

SOCIAl ACTIONThe scale of U.S. participation in the massive joint U.S./Israeli military exercise, postponed seven months ago and rescheduled for late October, has been drastically reduced. The reductions are alarming. Instead of approximately 5,000 U.S. troops originally planned for Austere Challenge 12, as the annual exercise is called, the Pentagon will send only

1,200 to 1,500 service members. Patriot anti-missile systems will arrive in Israel as planned, but the crews to operate them will not. The Patriots are particularly important. Israel has made great strides in creating antimissile shields that protect its population, but it doesn’t have enough of them to deploy around the entire country. Originally billed as “by far the largest and most significant exercise in U.S.-Israeli history” by Assistant Secretary of State Andrew Shapiro, the reductions seem aimed at convincing Iran that the US is not preparing to act together with Israel against Iran. This is consistent with the recent statement by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey that he didn’t “ want to be complicit” if Israel chooses to attack Iran’s nuclear sites. It appears likely that Israel may have to go it alone. Call President Obama (202) 456-1111) and Senators Nelson (202) 224-5274) and Rubio (202) 224-3041) to express outrage at this incomprehensible lack of support for our only democratic ally in the Middle East.

Why should teens have a minyan on Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur?

Although this might be a shock to some readers, teens have trouble sitting through a six hour davening – especially when they don’t understand what they’re saying. This year we aim to educate and inspire with a teen centered minyan. It’s the same davening…only one where the teens will want to be there! This coming Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur will

be different.

Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski

Call waiting can be pretty annoying at times. It puts all of us in a dilemma: Do I ignore the second caller? Is that rude to the caller? Don’t they deserve my attention, even if only to be politely told that I’m on the phone and that I’ll call them back? If I answer the second caller, am I being rude to the person I’m currently on the phone with? Does it make a difference if the caller is someone I know? I don’t know about you, but I every time I’m on the phone and the call waiting sounds beeps in my ear, I’m conflicted. This past Sunday was no different. While on the phone with a close friend boasting about our teens latest accomplishment (see above) when that familiar call waiting beep sounded in my ear, I quickly checked to see who it was and recognized a member of Congress’s cell phone number. This was a call I had to answer. It was Congressman Allen West thanking our teens for their advocacy and their help. I was amazed! Here is a United States Congressman calling to thank our teenagers! What really amazed me was, earlier in the day, a candidate for Congress, Karen Harrington, had placed me in the same dilemma! She had an aide call to see if it was OK if they stopped by our event to speak to our teens about the US-Israel relationship. Two days later, Adam Hasner (see picture above) grabbed our teens in a hallway at a Pro-Israel event to speak to us about the urgency of the times we live in for the United States and Israel. I celebrate our teens who are recognized throughout the country as genuine lovers of America, Israel, and world security. It is amazing when the highest officials the White House. I continue to and will always celebrate our amazing teens.

CALLING ALL TEENS!

Sounds pretty simple, right? It actually isn't. How do we advertise all the wonderful events for our teens? One way is through mass texting. We're asking all teens and their parents to text their names, cell #'s and grade to 561.739.2150. Thanks!

Washington, DC - Boca Raton Synagogue’s Pro-Israel Teens became the first High School student group to qualify for AIPAC’s Campus to Congress Club. This club is designed for college students to form relationships with members of Congress. Each participating group must volunteer 500 hours and raise $1,000 for a candidate while making it clear that the students' support stems

from their Pro-Israel position. Our students raised over $1,000 and volunteered for over 500 hours over the last two years. Not only did they qualify for the "C to C" club, but they are the first and only High School group to do so! Our teens understand the need to keep Pro-Israel representatives in Congress, and they are willing to donate time and energy to do so.
