A secure, browser–based application used at student workstations to take computer based tests.

Complete requirements for TestNav 8 can be found at: ◦ http://PARCC.Pearson.com/TN8Requirements◦ TestNav does require Java in order to run properly.

Uploads student responses to PeasonAccess and saves encrypted backup file (student response files – SRF) as the student moves through the test.

TestNav 8

Page 12: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

A machine that stores a local cache copy of the test content to be delivered to students.

Saves District/school bandwidth usage and quickly loads tests.◦ Test content can be 20-35 MB per test (with

Audio).◦ Without audio, tests are approximately 10 MB or

less. Proctor caching hardware requirements can

be found at:◦ http://PARCC.Pearson.com/TN8Requirements

Proctor Caching

Page 13: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

You must pull tests from PearsonAccess once the tests become available. ◦ This is not an automatic process.

You can have multiple proctor caching machines.◦ Caching machines can be installed in multiples

but if caching machine fails, the tests do not auto fail over to another proctor caching machine.

The Configure TestNav menu can be selected from the homepage PearsonAccess website with the appropriate login and technology role rights.

TestNav Config is used to:◦ Manage Proctor Caching settings. ◦ To manage TestNav Client settings.

Such as setting the primary and secondary temporary student response save locations.

Create TestNav Config

Page 16: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

First step to determine if you are ready for Pearson online testing.

Validates that testing workstations meet the minimum requirements needed to run TestNav 8.

Provides the ability to run bandwidth speed checks to help plan for online testing capacity.

Will not run on iPads or Chromebooks.◦ App coming to launch TestNav on these devices.

SystemCheck

Page 17: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

Learn more about using SystemCheck by visiting http://PARCC.Pearson.com/Support and selecting the SystemCheck training module.

Launch SystemCheck from:◦ http://PARCC.Pearson.com/SystemCheck

SystemCheck cont’d

Integrated functionality that gives TestNav a high degree of fault tolerance and provides additional fail-safes in the event of unexpected disruptions during computer-based testing.◦ Power management software on laptops warning

of low batteries.◦ Screen savers.◦ Loss of network connectivity.◦ E-mail with auto message notification.◦ Energy saving features.

Early Warning System

Page 19: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

The Early Warning System writes continuously in the background to the student response files (SRF).◦ Both the Primary and Alternate files are written to at the same time.

The SRF file has a response data threshold that, once reached, triggers TestNav to send response data to Pearson servers.

Uploading of response data is continuous. ◦ If an upload to the Pearson servers fails, student responses continue

to be saved locally and TestNav cycles and attempts another upload. If the response data upload is successful, TestNav creates a

new empty SRF file and begins the process again. ◦ TestNav only deletes an SRF file once it is successfully uploaded to

the Pearson servers.

• An Infrastructure Trial is a “dress rehearsal” of a computer-based assessment. It does not use real student information.

• This is low-stakes, dry run for final confirmation that:

TestNav is configured correctly.Devices can successfully run TestNav.Network will bear the full load.Participating staff know what to do for computer-

based assessment.

Overview

Page 23: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

Several states have a minor adjustment in their testing window, due to special circumstances in their state. Recruited districts (LEAs) in these states were notified of this difference in their recruitment letters.

PARCC field test administration window

Page 24: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

The first step for all districts will be to gain access to PearsonAccess, PARCC’s single consolidated online system for managing the PARCC Field Test.

You will use this site to access on-demand training materials, user guides, and to conduct the pre-administrative activities.

PearsonAccess user accounts will be setup by each state starting in January 2014.  If your district has not received a PearsonAccess user ID by January 17th, please contact the New York State Education Department at [email protected].

PearsonAccess

Page 25: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

PearsonAccess, serves as the entry point to all Pearson services used by school districts participating in the PARCC consortium.

PearsonAccess is used to create, deliver, score, report, and analyze summative, formative, and alternative assessments as well as manage the student data.

Create, Deliver, Score, Report, Analyze◦ View and send student data◦ Manage participation counts◦ Register students for testing

What is PearsonAccess?

Page 26: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

Learn about the PARCC Field Test◦ The most important thing you can do prior to

administration is to learn more about the PARCC Assessment and, in particular, the PARCC Field Test.

◦ The PARCC website is a valuable resource for the latest news and developments related to the PARCC Assessment.

◦ General PARCC information:  www.parcconline.org◦ PARCC Task Prototypes and Sample Items:

http://www.parcconline.org/samples/item-task-prototypes

◦ PARCC Policies and information related to the Spring 2014 Field Test: www.parcconline.org/field-test

◦ Frequently Asked Questions about the Field Test: www.parcconline.org/field-test

What can I do prior to getting a PearsonAccess user account

Page 27: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

We would like to propose GST pull the data directly from Level 1 Datawarehouse◦ Data pulled from Level 1 would be based off the

requirements provided by Pearson/PARCC/NYSED ◦ Data used would come from the following eScholar

templates Demographic, enrollment, program fact, staff student course

GST would load the student data to the PearsonAccess system on behalf of the participating school districts

School districts would be responsible for verifying the accuracy of the data that was loaded into PearsonAccess and managing the data from that point forward

How does student data get into the PearsonAccess System?

Page 28: PARCC Field Testing Meeting

For paper based assessments, Pearson will provide preprinted materials for the PARCC Field test based on the data that is loaded.

For online based assessments, students data loaded will drive the creation of an online assessment for each student.

NYSED/Pearson have indicated that January 21, 2014 all student data must be loaded into PearsonAccess◦ This will require Testing Coordinators to work with

District Data Coordinators to ensure the appropriate student data has been load to the Level 1 Datawarehouse

Test ManagementThe primary test management activities are registering students and managing

test sessions.

• Register Students allows you to manually assign students to paper & online tests, update student demographic data before testing, and view student counts by administration.

• Managing Test Sessions is one of the main activities for computer-based testing.
