Strategies for
English Language Learning
and Reading
STELLAR
The STELLAR Vision
Children who love reading and have
a strong foundation in the English
Language
STELLAR lessons
A Typical STELLAR Lesson
1. Shared Reading Experiences
Children read storybook with the
teacher and engage in oral discussions
with teacher and peers.
2. Modified Learning Experiences
Approach
Pupils engaged in class activities
(writing) related to the theme of the
story.

Learning Journeys in 2015
• Term 2: Butterfly Lodge
• Term 3: Singapore Philatelic Museum
Fantastic Mr. Fox
• To enrich language learning
experience for our pupils
• Real, authentic literary text
• Introduce Fantastic Mr. Fox
as part of the curriculum
material
• Conducted in Semester 2.
Step-Into-Reading (SIR)
• The school has initiated this SIR programme to provide
an opportunity for pupils to read.
• 1 title every fortnight; 10 books in Semester 1
Read-with-Teacher
Class Discussions to promote
reasoning and higher-level
thinking.
Comprehension Exercises –
Pupils respond to questions
and teachers assess pupils’
comprehension of stories
formatively.
Holistic Assessment (Formative and Summative)
- Picture Matching & Listen for Details
- Stimulus-based Conversation
- Reading Aloud
- Composition
- Progress Test 1
- Progress Test 2
- End-of-Year Examination

English class today?
How to help your child in
English Language Learning
Reading Skills
Spend some time reading to your child
Expose your child to different genres of books
Choose age-appropriate texts
Look up meaning of unfamiliar words in the dictionary
Make word webs to build vocabulary
Book discussion
• Guide your child in penning down his/her
thoughts and ideas
• Build on his/her vocabulary and adjectives
to help him/her write
• Expose them to good writing
• Guide in sentence construction
Writing Skills (Composition)
How to help your child in
English Language Learning
• Get your child to share her/his
thoughts about certain issues
• Practise in front of an audience to
build up his/her confidence
Speaking Skills

P2 MATHEMATICS
Our Programme seeks to: • Stimulate and cultivate creative and critical
problem-solving skills
• Cultivate and enhance interest in learning Mathematics
• Promote confidence, resilience, self-directed and life-long learning in pupils
Our Strategies • Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach in Mathematics
Learning
• Use of Instructional Guide (IG) package in the teaching of Mathematics skills and concepts
• Cultivate and enhance interest in learning Mathematics through varied learning experiences wherever appropriate
• Use of STARtUP as a tool to engage our pupils in metacognition (thinking about their thinking), to persevere and not to give up when they are stuck in problem solving, and to develop greater confidence in problem solving.
• Through Mathematics teaching, we develop life-long skills such as teamwork and the values of resilience and confidence
FOCUS • Help your child develop strong foundation in Mathematics
– Understanding basic concepts – Develop good number sense – Develop strong arithmetic skills to be quick & accurate – Develop deep understanding of the underlying
relationship between and among topics e.g. interlinking concepts between addition & multiplication
• Increase your child’s repertoire of skills to solve word problems – Key Construct Worksheets – Topical Worksheets – Shaping Math – Heuristics Package
• P1 to P6 Progressive Learning
Heuristics Package – Progressive Learning P1 to P6
• ‘Guess n Check’ & ‘Logical Reasoning’ to be introduced in P2

FOCUS
• Model Drawing • Model drawing is a powerful Mathematics heuristic or strategy
used by pupils to gain greater understanding of the word problems
• Understanding word problem must come first before anyone can solve the problem
• Parental support is essential to child’s mastery of model drawing • Ensure child draws model prior to presenting solutions • label the bars • draw bars proportionately • have a common start line drawn • Part-whole Model (1-tier) • Comparison Model (2-tier & Multi-tier)
TOPICS IN FOCUS
Ensure Mastery in
–Number Bonds of up to 9 + 9
–Multiplication 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 & 11
–Relationship between topics e.g. addition & multiplication
REAL-LIFE USAGE OF MATH
• Day to Day usage of Math • Examples are all around us as Math is all round
us –Multiplication
–Buying things in Daiso where all items are priced at $2 –Time
–Telling time –Money
– Using money; budgeting –Measurement & Geometry
– Wrapping gifts – Painting the house – Decorating rooms – Spring Cleaning
PERI HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT
• Summative Assessment –3 Progress Tests (not a full paper)
• covers previous topics tested
– Semestral Assessment (Full Paper)
– Practice Papers will be assigned prior to SA so that pupils are aware of exam format • Level of difficulty of Practice Papers are not
representative of that of school assessment papers

Based on New MOE Examination Guidelines
PERI HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT
• Formative Assessment • Complement Summative Assessment
• Zero Weightage
• Provides Rich Feedback to be used by teachers, parents & pupils to plan intervention measures
–Topical Revision Tests
–Progress Rubrics for each semester
–Math Journaling
–Diagnostic Tests
–Performance Tasks
Ken
Pam
7
21 ?
2 units = 21 - 7 or = 14 1 unit = 14 ÷ 2 = 7 Ken has 7 pens.
1) Draw a Model 2) Write Number equation 21 - 7 = 14 21 - 7 3) Write a Final statement. Serves to help pupil check answers & present their answers in the correct unit.
• Expected way to present solution
This is called a side working. It should not replace the number equation as working.
21 - 7 = 14 (2 units) 14 ÷ 2 = 7 (1 unit) Ken has 7 pens.
New Syllabus
• Right from P1, pupils were taught to use the term ‘equation’ instead of Mathematical Statement or Number Sentence
• Hence, pupils are expected to present their solutions as follows with an equal sign and not an arrow
2 units = 21 – 7 = 14 1 unit = 14 ÷ 2 = 7 Ken has 7 pens.
2 units 21 – 7 = 14 1 unit 14 ÷ 2 = 7 Ken has 7 pens.
