FREE & REDUCED MEAL
APPLICATIONS
We are encouraging all families who have not yet submitted a Free/Reduced Price
Meal application for 2017-2018 school year to do so ASAP. This is especially important
if your child qualified for free or reduced price meals last school year. If you do not
turn in an application for this year soon, his/her meal status will automatically
become full pay. You may request another application from the office or apply online at
hionlineapps.primeroedge.com.
This institution is an equal opportunity provider
Each student will take home a Federal
Survey card on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.
Hawaii schools participate in Federal aid programs
through an annual census of federally-connected
students. Please fill out the card legibly and
completely. Be sure to sign and date the card.
Every student must return the card to school
on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Please kokua and send in your cards. All cards
must be returned. Your cooperation is
greatly appreciated.

Kipapa Parking Lot and Road Safety
Your cooperation is needed to ensure the safety of our children.
Please drop off and pick up your child in the school parking lot, not out on the street.
When driving please watch for children who may suddenly dash in front of your car.
When dropping off your child, please remind him/her to be alert and to not run.
Please tell your child to get his/her things ready before the car comes to a stop so that he/she can get out promptly.
Please do not park your car, even temporarily, where it could impede the normal flow of traffic.
Handicap stalls are marked and are only for vehicles with proper permits or placards (which must be displayed).
The main parking lot has marked stalls. Please park only in a stall marked “Visitor.”
Please do not make a left turn onto Kipapa Drive when exiting the main parking lot between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., and between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m.
When on Kipapa Drive or Kuahelani Avenue, please do not double park or jaywalk.

Attendance Corner
By: Dr. Koch
The Importance of School Attendance Having your child come to school regularly is one of the most powerful ways you can
prepare your child for success. When you make school attendance a priority, you help
your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, and avoid dangerous behavior.
Students who attend school regularly feel more connected to their community, develop
important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from
high school. When kids are absent however, it can have a negative impact. These
absences can affect kids as early as kindergarten. For example, young elementary school
students who miss an average of just two school days per month often have difficulty
keeping up with their peer academically and tend to fall behind in reading. But when
students are able to read on grade level by the end of third grade, which is when kids
transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” they are three to four times more
likely to graduate high school and attend college than their peers who struggle with
reading.
Did you know……
• that absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout
the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a
month of school.
• that an estimated 5 million to 7.5 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each
year.
• that by 6th grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will
drop out of high school.
• that research shows that missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days in
most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
• that when students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic
prospects and chances for graduating.
As a parent, you can prepare your child for success by making regular school
attendance a priority. (obtained in part from “10 Facts About School Attendance,” attendanceworks.org)

September PCNC Update A flier was sent home last week requesting readers for our annual
“Grandparent/Special Person Read Aloud on Wednesday, September 13th between 8:45-
10:15, which will include refreshments. It's always wonderful to have grandparents or
someone else who is very special to that child read in their class. I'm looking forward to this
memorable event again this year.
This year's Brown Bag snack is scheduled for the morning in the cafeteria from 8:15 –
10:15 am. Grade 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, 9/5. Brown Bag for Grade 5 is on Thursday,
September 7, and Grade 4 is on Tuesday 9/12. Fliers will be forthcoming. It's always great
to see so many parents participate in this annual activity.
Just to let you know, “Nutrition Nuggets” newsletter, which has information on food
and fitness will be sent home at the beginning of each month.
Mc Teacher’s Night will be on September 14 between 5-8 pm at Walmart McDonalds.
A portion of the sales that night will be donated to Kipapa School. The class with the most
student participation will win a “Happy Meal” party.
Don't forget to sign in at the classroom and wear the volunteer badge when you're
volunteering on campus. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me @ 627-7318.

Character Counts Value Word of the Month “Trustworthiness”
by: Dr. Koch Hello Parents! Here at Kipapa School, we have been very busy learning about the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. This month’s value word is “trustworthiness.” People with good character are people we can trust. Trust is not automatic. Earning trust takes time and losing trust can happen quickly. Trustworthiness means:
• Being reliable; do what you say you'll do • Having the courage to do the right thing • Being loyal; stand by your friends • Being honest • Not deceiving, cheating, or stealing
Teaching your child to be trustworthy does not happen overnight. Instead, it is something you should model every day. Use these guidelines for earning and maintaining trust:
• Keep your word. • Be sincere. Say what you mean and mean what you say. • Tell the truth. • Be reliable. • Keep private information private. • Don’t gossip. • Don’t ask a friend to do something wrong to keep your friendship. • Stand up for and act on what you believe. • Do the right thing no matter what you lose in the process. Learning about character begins at home. Let’s all work together to help our children be honest and trustworthy.
