Parent & Child Activity Calendar Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 With your child, keep a record of the moon this month. Look at the moon every night and draw what it looks like. 2 Ask your child to stand on one foot. Count how long she can balance. Now have her try the other foot. 3 String a macaroni necklace with your child. Have him count each piece as he strings it. 4 Suggest that your child try a new self-care skill today— putting on her own shoes, for example. 5 Place a sheet of paper in a box. Dip a marble in paint, drop it in the box and have your child roll it around. 6 Make a “touch box” filled with cotton balls, rocks and tree bark. Without looking, can your child guess what he’s touching? 7 Resist the urge to overschedule your child. Kids need “down time” to think, imagine and play. 8 Have your child draw a picture of something that happened today. Then talk about it. 9 Ask your child for her opinion. Does she think you should you wear a red sweater today or a white one? 10 Send your child something through the mail. He will be thrilled to receive it. 11 Just for fun, serve dinner backwards tonight. Eat dessert first. 12 With your child, read a book about holidays around the world. Choose a new holiday to observe, or invent one. 13 Use sidewalk chalk to draw pictures outside with your child. 14 Encourage your child to try two motor tasks at the same time—for example, clapping hands while walking. 15 Dim the lights and slowly move the beam of a flashlight across the floor. Ask your child to jump over the beam or step on it. 16 Talk to your child about the “Golden Rule”—treat others as you would like to be treated. 17 Teach your child about uppercase and lower- case letters. Show her how each letter can be written differently. 18 Allow a few minutes after the light is off at bedtime for a quiet conversation with your child. 19 Poke holes in egg carton cups. Fill with soil. Plant two seeds in each. Keep them wet and well-lit. What happens? 20 After a bath, let your child make wet footprints on colored construction paper. What do they look like? 21 Read a story to your child. Later ask him to retell it to you from memory. 22 Tell your child that people learn when they try new things. Today, try a new food or take a new route home. 23 Line up a few chairs. Ask your child to crawl under them, around them and on them. 24 Make a list of all the things that make your family members thankful. 25 Let your child help set the table for dinner. Practice counting out forks, plates or cups together. 26 Celebrate your child’s favorite color. Wear it today. Serve food that color. Look for it wherever you go. 27 Read the comics to your child. Preschoolers especially love the ones with sound words like thunk! 28 Ask your child to tell you about the nicest thing a friend has ever done for her. 29 Show your child a picture of a rainbow. Can he name the colors? 30 Review safety rules for car trips with your child. Talk about why it’s important for everyone to buckle up! Parent & Child

Activity CalendarSunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

October 20161 Help your child

make a paper chain with one ring for each day until the end of the month. Every day, remove a ring.

2 Give your child play dough, a

rolling pin and some cookie cutters. Let him cut out “cookies.”

3 Ask your child to draw a picture of

herself today. Was she feeling happy, sad, confused, angry?

4 Go on a color hunt. Make a list of

colors with your child. Try to find one item of each color in your home.

5 Make a “letter tree.” Draw a

large tree on a piece of poster board. Glue letters on the tree as your child learns them.

6 Ask your child to give you words

that rhyme with words you say: clap (tap), walk (talk), cat (pat).

7 Give your child crayons and a large

sheet of paper. Put on some favorite music and draw or scribble to music together.

8 Involve your child in a job you have

been meaning to do. Organizing toys is a great idea.

9 Take out your child’s baby book

and look through it with him. Read it and tell stories.

10 Have a pretend phone call with

your child. Talk about what she did yesterday and what she wants to do tomorrow.

11 Ask your child, “What would it

be like if your favorite zoo animal lived in your room?”

12 Have your child practice

counting to five. If this is easy for him, have him count to 10 or 20.

13 Look in the mirror together.

Ask, “What color are your eyes? Your hair? How many hands do you have?”

14 Encourage some creativity

with unusual questions. Ask your child, “What if your hair were made of spaghetti?”

15 Does your library have a

list of recommended books for preschoolers? Check some out to read with your child.

16 Gather some floating and

sinking objects. Ask your child to test which will float or sink in water.

17 Give your child an empty plastic

bucket and a wooden spoon. Let her tap on her “drum” to the beat of her favorite song.

18 Watch or read the weather

forecast with your child today. Locate the hottest and the coolest locations on a map.

19 Start a made-up story. “A man

went down the road and he met a ... .” Let your child finish the story.

20 Model good table manners

for your child. Say “Please pass the ... ,” and “Thank you very much.”

21 Keep the TV turned off

tonight. As a family, read or play games instead.

22 Make a paper crown and let

your child play “King” or “Queen” for a day. What rules would your child set?

23 Teach your child a new

game today.24 Hug your child,

for no reason other than loving him!

25 Make your child laugh!

Tell a joke, read a funny story or poem, sing a silly song or draw a cartoon.

26 Talk with your child

about something she has done well today.

27 Give your child a measuring

tape. Help him measure and record the dimensions of objects in your house.

28 Ask your child what she would

do if she were invisible for a day.

29 Share something of yours with

your child today. It’s the best way to teach him to share with others!
