The English GCSE at Kingdown

• 2 GCSES • Both taken at the end of Year 11- terminal

• A grade ‘5’ in English will:

-Allow access to Level 3 College courses

What’s coming up in Year 10?

• Focus on engaging with Literature texts while embedding skills for English Language exams

• Students will study 4 texts:

• Poems from the Poetry Anthology ‘Power and Conflict’

• ‘An Inspector Calls’ – Modern Play

• ‘Macbeth’ – Shakespeare

• ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ – 10th C Novel

• English Language practice: Writing descriptions; reading non-fiction texts; Literacy lessons: SPAG homework; Speaking and Listening

Homework and Assessment

• Students in Year 10 will be set:

• A fortnightly SPAG homework

• Regular preparation homework – revising for content tests

• Regular longer written homework – number varies according to length of the unit – exam practice

• Regular in-class practices to develop timed writing in exam conditions

Pupil progress

• Use of the trajectory system to communicate progress to pupils as well as marks for exam practices.

• Students will focussed feedback from marked work which they then have to address.

• Mock exam at end of year 10: Lit and Lang papers

• Progress will be reported in Data Collections and Go4 Schools, but we would contact if any concerns.

What’s coming up in Year 10

• Pupils will continue to follow the GCSE work from Year 9. • All pupils will be examined in Mathematics at the end of

Year 11 on the new 9-1 grades. • Sets 2 – 6 will do AQA GCSE Statistics in Year 10; there is a

controlled assessment in February and they will be examined in June of Year 10 on grades A* to G

• Set 1 will study AQA Level 2 in Further Maths alongside Mathematics and will be examined in both in June of Y11. Maths 9 to 1, Further Maths A^ to D.

• All pupils have two teachers; one delivering Maths, the other either Statistics or Further Maths.

What’s coming up in Year 10

• Pupils will follow chapters from a core Text book.

• Each term pupils will complete an assessment based on the chapters covered. Following feedback they will consolidate learning via homework and maintenance.

• Flexibility between Maths and Statistics teaching time – huge advantage for pupils.

• The Statistics controlled assessment should be completed in class.

– Regular chapter tests, grades on Go4Schools.

– Statistics practice papers.

Homework

• Set fortnightly by each teacher, amounts to 1 piece a week.

• Books seen at least fortnightly • Increasingly pupils can expect a practice paper

– You can support your child by allowing them to explain to

you how to do it. – Highlight any errors you spot and see if they can correct

them. – Try not to give the answer away! – Please don’t worry about leaving evidence of your input, it

is very useful to see what support was given.

Assessing Pupil progress

• Regular assessment plus chance for pupils to improve as direct result.

• Past exam paper practice.

• Report progress in Data Collections, but would contact if any concerns.

• Numeracy intervention.

• Use of rewards to motivate and praise.

How you can help • Encourage pupils to attend Maths Club on either Tuesday or

Wednesday in M4 • Ensure Homework is done on time and is neat and tidy.

• Encourage students to use mymaths and Maths Watch VLE to attempt to relearn or revise weaker topics.

• Make contact with the class teacher if you have any concerns.

• Ensure your child is fully equipped and has an appropriate calculator.

• Purchase a revision guide or revision workbook (available on Wisepay)

• Know the exam dates – Stats: Feb controlled assessment and Jun 27th exam.
