5430 Torrance Boulevard Torrance, California 90503(310) 540 - 2021 www.bmhs-la.org Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! I hope that the summer has given you time to spend with your family. I know that this new school year will bring the inevitable challenges that come with growth as well as many moments to rejoice in our students’ accomplishments. Great things happen every day at Bishop Montgomery! I can’t thank you enough for your wonderful children. We look forward to an eventful school year, the year of the Class of 2015. It probably hardly seems possible to the seniors’ parents that this is the year of their students’ graduation—and graduation day will come quickly! My prayer for all of our students is that they make every moment count—and make wonderful memories.
As we begin the school year there are a few calendar dates I’d ask you to note:
vMonday, September 1st, Labor Day HolidayvTuesday, September 2nd, Faculty Meeting, 8:45 a.m. startvFriday, September 12th, Athletic Hall of Fame Induction, 5:30 p.m. vMonday, September 15th, Senior Parent Meeting 5:30, gym; Freshman Parent
Meeting 5:30, SAC; Back to School Night, 6:30 gymvTuesday, September 16th, 8:45 a.m. startvWednesday, September 17th, Welcome Mass, 8:00 a.m.vFriday, September 19th, Welcome BMHS Parents BBQ, 5:00-7:00 p.m.vFriday, September 26th, First Grading Period EndsvMonday, September 29th, Grades Due, 11:59 p.m.
I hope that I will see you at Back to School Night. As you travel to your student’s classes his/her teachers will share information with you regarding the content and requirements for their courses. This is an important night as are all of the other tools we use for communication: the Parent-Student Handbook, the monthly Parent Newsletter which includes the current month’s updated calendar, our school website where you can communicate with teachers via email as well as access student grades and monitor academic progress. We also communicate with a weekly update via email that comes from the Development Office, global telephone calls and emails when appropriate, with information on our school marquee, and through school mailings. We count on your attention to these messages as they will help you stay current with the activities of your student’s high school life.
I have noted above that the first grading period ends on Friday, September 26th. These grades are the first indication of your student’s progress in each class. I encourage you to speak with your student about his/her grades and to contact the teacher and or counselor should you have concerns. It is most important that you first contact your student’s teacher as the earlier a student’s difficulty in class can be addressed, the better.
I will close this first letter of the 2014-2015 school year with a prayer that I have shared with you before and that I say often. Life is often difficult and I know that as parents you have many, many obligations and I’m sure struggle daily to balance all of them. I hope that you will find this prayer one that you also return to often.
WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN
From the PrinciPal:Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal
We pray to you, Lord, for the gift and grace of balance.May our lives be blessed with gracious, harmonious balance.May we invest ourselves in our work, yet not forget that it is you who is working through us. May we invest ourselves in activity, yet not neglect the prayer and reflection that gives our activity depth.May we invest ourselves in our tasks, yet not lack appreciation for the relationships close to our heart.Grant that we may be both serious and happy, both hard-working and relaxed, both passionate and at peace. Amen.
Our Lady, Queen of Angels, Pray for Us.
Know that you are, as always, in my prayers. I know the challenge of being a parent, that constant dance of holding our children close and letting them go that can be such a source of anxiety, but also a source of joy. I ask that you keep me and all of the members of our school community, particularly our students, in your daily prayers.
Sincerely,
Rosemary LibbonPrincipal

WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN
On behalf of our guidance staff, we hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. We are pleased to welcome our continuing students back from their summer vacations and the incoming freshmen and transfer students to Bishop Montgomery. We look forward to working with you and your child during the 2014 – 2015 school year.
The counselor assignments for the 2014 – 2015 school year are as follows:
Mr. Doug Mitchell Juniors and Seniors A-Le Extension 252 Ms. Celeste Adams Juniors and Seniors Li-Z Extension 250 Ms. Angelica Diaz Freshmen and Sophomores Extension 251 Mrs. Casey Dunn (Guidance/Studies Coordinator) Extension 226
Senior parents should note the SAT and ACT registration deadlines for the October ACT and the October SAT. Registration may be completed online at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT and www.actstudent.org for the ACT. In addition to registration, both websites offer a wealth of information for parents and students.
Students taking the ACT and planning to apply to a UC school must take the additional writing portion at the same time they take the standard exam. Unlike the SAT, the writing portion is optional on the ACT. Students planning to take the ACT and apply to private schools or schools outside California, they should check with the college or university to identify the specific entrance test requirements.
On Friday, September 5, the guidance counselors will visit the senior English classes to distribute and discuss a senior timeline. Please ask your son or daughter for the timeline and keep it in a safe and accessible place. The timeline has many useful dates regarding testing, application, and financial aid deadlines. These dates will become increasingly important as we progress into the year.
In September, the counselors will meet with freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the English classes to distribute the standardized testing. For the juniors, the counselors will review the structure of the exams and discuss planning topics specific to the junior year.
Please be reminded that October 15 is a mandatory school day for all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Students will be dismissed by 11:30 on this day.
Again, we wish you the best for the coming school year and look forward to working with you. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions.

THE ANNUAL BMHS FUNDRAISER
The annual Bishop Montgomery fundraiser begins on September 12th with the distribution of tickets to all students. The school relies on the proceeds of this major fundraiser as part of the operating budget. With parental support we expect 100% of the students to meet at least 100% of their quota, 50 tickets($250). The fall fundraiser is our school’s only fundraiser.
Families with one or two students at BMHS are responsible for selling or buying 50 tickets($250) per student. Families with 3 or more students are required to sell 40 tickets($200) per student. Students who complete their quota will be eligible for daily cash drawings. In addition, monetary prizes will be awarded to the three top selling homerooms and individuals, after the fundraiser concludes on Thursday, October 16th.
Students who complete at least 50%($125) of their quota by 8:30a.m., Tuesday, October 7th will have noon dismissal on that day. Students who complete 100%($250) of their quota by 8:00a.m., Thursday, October 16th will have a free day on Monday, October 27th. Please note that ticket stubs and money must be turned in together. Ticket stubs will not be accepted if not accompanied with the money. Ticket stubs will not be taken after 12:00p.m., Thursday, October 16th.
The success of this fundraiser is linked to the enthusiastic participation of both parents and students. We encourage parents to double the amount of their support by investigating matching funds programs through the Human Resources Department of their companies. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents: Welcome to an exciting school year. Once again, we are looking forward to embracing the challenges of the new year together. The Discipline Office has a few important reminders:
If you were unable to make the last uniform selling day at Bishop Montgomery, you may contact Norman’s Uniform directly at:
Norman’s Uniforms 371 W. 6th Street San Pedro, CA 90731 (310) 832-8342
The Discipline Office sincerely desires that parents and students comply with the uniform policies stated in the Parent Student Handbook. Please be aware that the school does not allow students to wear clothes which do not fit properly. They should be neither too large nor too tight. As the sweatshirts sold in the bookstore and Norman’s do not shrink, it is unnecessary to buy oversized items. Students must wear pants, shorts, and skirts hemmed to the prescribed length. We will not tolerate unhemmed or frayed pants. Students should make no other alterations to the uniform items.
Please note the following: The use of skirts or shorts that do not fit properly, skirts or shorts that have been altered so that they are shorter will not be tolerated. In the interest of student safety, the privilege to wear skirts or shorts will be revoked for those students who choose to alter the length of the items so that they are too short.
The deans will detain any student who does not comply with dress code policy. The school will require a parent to bring appropriate attire in order for the student to go to class.
The dress code states that students should maintain their natural hair color. If a student has altered his/her hair color during the summer, it is necessary for him/her to take steps to comply with the school rules. The dress code also states the boys must have their hair cut above the collar, eyebrows and ears. Those boys who do not comply with the hair length will not be allowed to attend class until they have cut their hair to the appropriate length. The dress code further states that the boys must be clean-shaven and may not have ear piercings. All students may not display any body piercings or tattoos. If a student is absent from school due to a medical appointment, he/she must bring a signed medical slip from the doctor or the dentist in order to be readmitted. The Parent Student Handbook states “A medical absence/tardy NOT accompanied by a doctor’s note will be considered UNEXCUSED.” Please note that if your son/daughter will be absent, regardless the reason, you must call the Attendance Office and notify the Attendance Clerk the day of the absence. An absence will be considered UNEXCUSED regardless of the reason for the absence if the parent/guardian does not call the Attendance Office on the day of the absence.
Please feel free to call if you have any questions regarding school policy.
Sincerely,
Betty Behen Lee FloresDean of Women Dean of Men

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Eric Wood and I am the new Athletic Director here at Bishop Montgomery. I have been involved in athletics for over 30 years playing, coaching, cheering and being an administrator of sports has been a lifetime activity for me. I have been a high school AD for 11 years; along with those duties, I have also coached soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, swimming, cross country, track, golf and football. I grew up in San Diego. I did my undergrad at Cal Poly SLO and recently finished my masters in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia. I look forward to working with the Bishop Montgomery community in keeping the athletic tradition strong. Bishop Montgomery is excited to announce that alumnus and former BMHS assistant baseball coach Eric Fuller ‘94 has been named the next head baseball coach for the Knights. He is the 17th coach in program history. Fuller began his coaching career in 2000 as the head JV coach for the Knights. From 2001-2002, he served as the Knights’ varsity pitching coach before leaving for one year to serve as the pitching coach at Long Beach City College. Fuller returned to BMHS in 2004 and served as the Associate Head Coach and varsity pitching coach until 2011. Under his guidance at Bishop Montgomery, Knights’ pitchers were named to the All-Del Rey League team 31 times and 8 went on to pitch at the college level. He played an instrumental role in the Knights reaching the playoffs 7 times from 2003-2011, including a trip to the CIF semi-finals in 2008.Keep up to date with Bishop Montgomery athletics by checking this link: http://www.bmhs-la.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=98134&type=d&pREC_ID=438152 Click under teams page to find sport you are interested in. If you have not done so already, we ask that you continue your commitment to Catholic education and to Bishop Montgomery with a pledge to Knight Pride. Your financial gift can be directed to the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund, the Field of Dreams Fund, or any other area of your choice. You can give monthly or make a one-time gift. technology: John Hong - Technology Committee Chair - ext. 276 Brian Adams - Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist - ext. 272
Greetings Bishop Montgomery High School! My name is Brian Adams. I am privileged to be joining the BMHS community in the role of Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist. I have taught technology for the past seven years, most recently at American Martyrs Catholic School and previously at Pacific Elementary School. I completed my undergraduate work at California State Long Beach, and my graduate work at Loyola Mary-mount University. In the position of Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist, I will be collaborating with students and teach-ers to increase fluency in technology. I will be providing technical training and assistance to faculty, staff, and students to incorporate, develop, and infuse computer science and technology into their work, projects, and lives. I’m looking to seamlessly integrate technology into the course content, but also, begin to blend technol-ogy and projects across curriculum to create an atmosphere of cross-curricular STEM learning. My goal is to create digitally literate students that are prepared for a continually developing, changing, and growing world of technology. In addition, I will be leading a project to develop the Bishop Montgomery Library into a digital space for collaborative and independent learning.
I look forward to working with the Bishop Montgomery School community to prepare our students with high caliber technology skills essential to succeed in today’s world. I can best be reached via email at [email protected].
Here are some other areas that we have been working on:• Our school has been approved for E-Rate funding for the 2014-2015 school year. We will receive 50% off of
our technology utilities.• Some of our faculty/staff attended the C3 Technology Conference that took place at Loyola Marymount
University on August 11-14. The conference assessed and enhanced technology, professional development, content and applications at parishes and schools within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
• The school’s internet speed has been increased to 100 mbps. This increase will help to accommodate for the number of students and faculty utilizing the internet during classroom usage.
• We have purchased a set of Nexus 7 tablets to be used for Mr. Hankey’s Music Production and Video Pro-duction classes. These state-of-the-art devices will be used to create video and compose music in those classes.

effective school is a high level of parental support of and involvement in curricular and extra curricular activities.
2. To provide parents with a feeling of ownership and investment. This is our school and we want it to be the best school possible.
3. To provide necessary assistance for the school, its teachers, coaches, staff and students that would otherwise be an expense to the school.
In this program, all parents are required to make a commitment to ten (10) hours to school involvement per semester.
Involvement hours will be given for any physical hours volunteered at Bishop Montgomery high School on projects benefiting:
Student ActivitiesTeam ActivitiesCampus Beautification ActivitiesStudent OrganizationsOfficeClassroomCampus Security and Traffic Control
Involvement hours may be given for refreshments only if these refreshments are needed by an organization or team. or if solicited by a school organization or team for a specific purpose. The maximum hours given for baked goods or refreshments is 2 hours, (unless a special need is met and this same need was pre-approved in writing by a BMHS administrator)
PLEASE REMEMBER, EACH HOUR IS WORTH $17.50
All parents will be assessed a fee of $175.00 per semester as a built-in accountability factor. The fee will be billed in August and January. Those parents who meet their involvement commitment will be credited on the following month’s tuition. If you are committed to working the hours it is not necessary to pay the $175 when billed but if you fail to make your commitment you will need to pay the $175.
To ensure credit for your service hours, ask the coordinator of the event in which you are involved to sign the “PSI Check-Off Sheet”. At the completion of your ten hours for each semester, please send the completed “PSI Check-Off Sheet” to the tuition office.
*Please check your monthly newsletter if you are looking for events to volunteer your time.*
Please Note - ALL PSI HOURS SHOULD BE TURNED IN PRIOR TO MAKING YOUR LAST PAYMENT.
If you have any questions, please contact the tuition office at 540-2021 ext-225

PSI HOURS – PARENT VOLUNTEER SECURITY EVENTS SCHEDULE 2014-‐2015
If you would like to volunteer for any of the events listed below please e-‐mail me at smiller@bmhs-‐la.org and I will place you on the list for each event. These lists will be comprised only through e-‐mail and taken in the order they are received. I will e-‐mail you confirmation that you are on the list for those dates. Sign up for only 10 hours per semester so we can accommodate everyone looking for PSI hours. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR EVENTS AND THEN NOT SHOW UP. There are always more requests then we can fill and it is not fair to those people who I have to deny and also then we do not have enough volunteers for that event. You are serving our students (your children) a valuable role of security for them and it is important that we are there for them. I thank you in advance for helping us in this important endeavor.
Sincerely,
Steve Miller Assistant Principal
