ARC Tech TECH TUESDAY IN THE ARC

The second Tuesday of the month, in collaboration with the librarian, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library teen and tech staff come bearing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects for the students to experiment with during their lunch periods. Mini projects include using circuitry with the Makey Makey kit. By using wires and a switchboard, attached to a computer, they’re able to forego the keyboard and use only their circuits to play Pac-Man, Snake, or play a digital piano. Osmo and Sphero are both popular as well. With a Sphero, you connect a BB-8-esque robot to a tablet and let it race down the hallway, or jump on the mini ramps. Osmo tests your brain with Tangrams or trying to figure out a word before an opponent with only one clue. The Oculus Virtual Reality is a new addition as of January! With a fully immersive headset, headphones, and hand controls (Oculus Touch) students are transported to another world. They’re able to look around 360 degrees and perform “tasks”. With the ever-changing technology, we’ll continue to offer new experiences and opportunities for students to widen their technological literacy.

School Pesticide Application Notification Program In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide applications on school property. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits, and rodenticide baits.
