Dear Parent and Carers,

Welcome to our first newsletter for term three. We have had an extremely smooth start with all classes and programs settling in very well. Students seemed happy to be back at school - enthusiastic and engaged. Mid-Year Reports and Student Support Group meetings (SSG)

It was a pleasure to provide you with your child’s report for the first semester of the school year of 2019 at the end of last term.

Student reports are an accurate and comprehensive profile of the progress made by your child and it was a pleasure to see how far the students had come in achieving the goal that was set for them. I hope you also enjoyed your child’s learning diary on See Saw and went through it with your child. Please continue to ask questions or make comments about the photos and videos on See Saw with your child regularly.

Staff members at the school have done an extraordinary job in assessing the learning of your child and compiling the student reports.

On behalf of our staff, I would like to thank you all for your support in the education of your child.

We also appreciated the opportunity of continuing our conversations with over with you on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Goals set out in the Individual Learning Plans for this semester will focus on your child's progress as a learner for the rest of the year.

School Purpose Statement, Vision and Values We continually refer to our school’s purpose statement, Vision and values to ensure that all our programs are in alignment with our Purpose, Vision and values. You will also find copies of our philosophy on the website. PURPOSE STATEMENT: “Our purpose is to engage our students in innovative and high quality education and social programs in a friendly and caring environment. The school is a place where learning is fun and our students achieve in ways which provide a basis for continued learning. Our school community forms part of a diverse and larger community, and our focus is on the ability of our students to participate in this local community and beyond.’ VISION: Excellence in Education VALUES: Respect, Safe, Responsibility

End of Term 2 Assembly Thank you to all of you who attended the end of term two assembly. The assembly was a celebration of the term’s work and congratulations to the following students for receiving special awards.

DAVID, AIDEN, RICHARD, MIKALAH, WILL.B & JOEL

A special mention goes to Tommy Lee for sharing his Movie “My Painted Smile” Please remember to vote

I would also like to thank Greg for the support and encouragement he provided Tommy and of course for editing the piece of work so brilliantly.

Facilities

Over the holidays, we had internal painting work completed in the staffroom and the performing arts room. All these rooms are looking fresh and bright! Grants

As a result of a fundraiser that Officeworks Yarraville and Altona undertook for our school, we have been granted $7000. This fundraiser runs every end of financial year end and asks customers to round up their total spend with the difference donated to a community cause.

Together the two stores have raised over $7000 for our school, a result that has seen the Yarraville store, which raised over $5000 on its own, raise the 10th most money in the whole country! A feat which is even more admirable as it is not a very big store compared to all the Officeworks in Australia.

What this means is that our local community really got behind our school and our cause which is establishing a Horticulture program for our Secondary students at school.

Officeworks will be presenting the money to the school on Friday, 26th of July at 10am, if you would like to join us.

I wish to Thank Kelly Botha and Lara Eleftheriou for putting in the application. I also acknowledge the staff and students from SLA who participated in the Ceres horticulture Program in Semester 1.

Further to this grant, we have also received another $2000 from the Rotary Club for the same cause.

Every Minute Counts

Term three is a busy term and our teachers have planned exciting and engaging curriculum for this term. We have high expectations that students will be doing their best every day and that they will have every opportunity to learn every day (Every Child, Every Opportunity, Every Day). A reminder to all families that the school day begins at 9:00 am. Students need to be in classes, ready for the start of the day. Late arrivals interrupt learning.

Please also note that if your child is absent, we require an explanation for the absence. You may get a phone call from school if your child has been away for consecutive number of days and we have not heard from you as to the reason for absence.

Parent Opinion Survey The 2019 Parent Opinion Survey “Your School, Your Say” will be open for parents to complete between Monday July 29th and Friday August 16th.

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT OUR

SCHOOL The Department of Education conducts this survey to find out what parents think of our

school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at

each school.

It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

On Monday July 29th, some of you you will receive an e-mail from us with a link to the survey.

Please take some time out to fill out the survey.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. This year, we will also be sending some paper surveys out which you can complete

and send back to school. All responses to the survey are anonymous.

The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi.Survey language guides will be provided in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu.

The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September.
