“The single factor most strongly associated with reading achievement- more than socioeconomic status or any instructional approach- is independent reading.” – Steven Krashen, The Power of Reading

"Regular reading not only boosts the likelihood of an individual’s academic and economic success—facts that are not especially surprising—but it also seems to awaken a person’s social and civic sense.” – “To Read or Not to Read”- NEA 2007

Scrapbooking?

My marathon

If the act of reading is the most important for future success, then my goal is to create students who genuinely want to read; otherwise, they might fall off the wagon down the road.

Reading Buy-In

Why do kids hate writing?

Audience

The Big Three

Purpose

Authenticity

Page 12: Parent presentation

Writing is the easiest subject to critique even though it’s so complex.

-punctuation, capitalization, grammar, spelling, word choice, ideas expansion, complete sentences, voice, authenticity, editing, revising, homonym, homophone, homographs, paragraph structure, sentence structure…

Biggest Challenge

Page 13: Parent presentation
Page 14: Parent presentation

As a teacher I often think, “Don’t you see this mistake?”

Writing is hard to gauge unlike math

Math= addition>multiplication>fractions>algebra> geometry>trigonometry>calculus>ForReal?

In the end, writing is a path with steps to mastery.

Feeling self-conscious can ruin any creativity and motivation to develop mastery. (focus on one thing max)

What Drives us?

• Autonomy - we all long to be autonomous - to have control over our lives and destiny. To the extent that we don't have autonomy we feel something missing.

• Mastery. We need to learn to master the tasks we are undertaking.

• Purpose. We need to "buy in" to why we are doing things. There needs to be a reason.
