IMPORTANT DATES
CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL CEEB CODE: 151585
The Guidance Department welcomes all new and
returning students to Carroll High School. It has been
a great start to the 2018-2019 school year. Parents
and students are encouraged to utilize the Guidance
Department as a resource for academic, career, and
social issues. Counselors stay with students as they
proceed through high school.
Throughout the school year,
the Guidance Department will
present academic, college,
scholarship, leadership opportuni-
ties and information to all students
via the Guidance web page, daily
announcements, bulletin boards,
school newsletters, grade level
homerooms and classes. Parents
are encouraged to remind students
to stay aware of these announce-
ments and check the website often.
College and military representa-
tives also regularly visit Carroll
High School to allow students to
gain firsthand knowledge of their
programs. The Carroll Media Cen-
ter and computer network also
have many resources to aid stu-
dents in their academic, career,

Who: All sophomores and juniors
No cost (paid by State)
When: October 10th (Wednesday morning)
Where: CHS
(If school is delayed due to weather - test will be given on delay schedule)
The PSAT is especially important for college-bound students and only those scores from a student’s
junior year are eligible for inclusion in the National Merit Scholarship contest. It is highly recom-
mended that juniors take the PSAT this year, even if it was taken last year as a sophomore. The
PSAT is designed not only to prepare a student for the SAT but also to give insight and suggestions
regarding a student’s ability for college level and Advanced Placement class work. Scores on the
SAT are used for college admission decisions and sometimes for college course selections so im-
proving SAT scores is important. If you have questions please contact your child’s guidance counse-
lor.

College Application Procedure
1. Apply online through College websites.
2. Create account with Parchment.com & request transcript to be sent to colleges you apply to unless
the college uses the common application and then student does not need parchment.
3. The counselor portion & transcript will then be completed & sent to these colleges by Mrs. Kennerk
or Mr. Cross.
4. Make sure you are aware of the application deadlines. Your application needs to be completed
at least a week before the deadline.
5. If you need a recommendation to go along with your application, choose someone who knows
you well, tell them what it is for, and give them at least a week to complete it.
6. If you are in the Career/Internship Program, add that to your application if possible and explain
what it is, how it works, and how it has benefited you. Some colleges may look at your
transcript and see an Internship listed but not really know what it is all about.

ISTEP+
MATH/ENGLISH
The state of Indiana released the
2017-18 ISTEP+ scores for last
spring and these test results were
mailed to parents/guardians. The
test results are independent of stu-
dent’s grades in the class(es) tak-
en and therefore do not include
performance in a classroom situa-
tion. If a student did not pass, she/
he will have another opportunity to
test this school year. Retesting will
occur around the end of Nov. and
first part of December. Please
contact your child’s Guidance
Counselor with questions.
ACADEMIC LETTER GUIDELINES
Academic letters reward students who excel academically
and maintain an attendance rate of 95% or better. Students
will be awarded their academic letters at the annual Honors
Programs.
The letter will be designated “Academics”.
The student’s cumulative GPA must be 3.67 or higher
based upon their 3rd, 5th and 7th semester. . The student’s
attendance must be 95% or better for the calendar year. This
means no more than nine (9) absences for the calendar year.
It is the student’s responsibility to be accountable to the in-
tention and spirit of the standards of the athletic code and the
co– and extra-curricular code of conduct. Participation by oth-
erwise qualified students in activities that violate the athletic
and/or co- and extra-curricular codes printed in the student
handbook will be grounds for ineligibility to receive the academ-
ic letter.
Students meeting these criteria for a second time earn a
chevron. The maximum number of academic letters a student
can earn is three (3) (one letter and two chevrons).
Academic letter qualifiers will be notified of such by their
guidance counselor. Academic letters and chevrons will be
awarded at the Spring Honors Program. Students select and
purchase their own jackets or sweaters for displaying the let-
ters and chevrons.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
As a reminder, all absences will be “documented” and “undocumented” absences. Documented
absences include: medical/dental note, legal note, religious holiday, funeral, up to 3 college visits, and
administrative approval. Undocumented absences include: anything not listed as documented, ill-
ness without a medical note, vacation days, non-verified appointment, transportation issues, more than
3 college visits. If a student accumulates more than 10 undocumented absences in a school year,
then discipline will be applied with possible referral to juvenile courts/BMV. Documented absences
will not count towards the 10 undocumented days that accumulate towards disciplinary action.
Regular school attendance is important for the success of your son/daughter. At the high school level,
a tremendous amount of information is supplied to students each day. If a student misses one class,
he or she may fall behind in that subject for an entire unit. If a student is frequently absent, he or she is
constantly playing catch up. For optimal success in a high school academic program, regular attend-
ance is vital.
We understand there are situations that make it necessary for your son/daughter to be absent from
school; however, we hope that you, as parents, do all you can to encourage good attendance. Stu-
dents do not receive “personal “days. As a reminder, absences for family vacation days are included in
the undocumented days which will count towards the 10 days prior to disciplinary action. Once again
this year, the School Board has built into the school calendar the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving and
the Friday prior to Spring Break to help families with their travel plans during times when many take
trips. Please do not extend travel beyond these days. For clarification purposes, we do want to remind
parents/guardians that there is not a “Senior Skip Day.”
Appointment Reminder
Whenever a student must miss school due to a medical (or any type of appointment) please remember
that the expectation is that the student will attend school before and immediately after the scheduled
appointment. We will be reasonable regarding drive time. All documentation should be brought
back to the school within 5 school days or it will be considered “undocumented.”
Parking Permits
Parking Permits will be sold in the fall at the cost of $30.00 for the school year. Families wishing to register a second car for a student will be charged $20.00 for each additional vehicle. To purchase a Parking Permit the student will need the original Bureau of Motor Vehicles registration, their driver’s license, and their signature for each permit. All student parking is restricted to the student parking lot for all events & classes with entry at new Door 13. This includes all athletic practices, music, art, drama, choir, dance, FFA or any other event or activity Monday thru Sunday.

PTO INFO
Thank you so much if you joined the PTO at registration!
Many of you were very generous with your donations to the “Sponsor-Your-Student”
fund, and we really appreciate it! However, we suspect that many of you missed our ta-
ble at registration, and we need you! The Parent Teacher Organization at Carroll High
School assists with many items that are no longer covered by the school budget. Our an-
nual budget is $8,600; so far we have only collected around $5,400… yikes, short! To re-
peat, we need you! If your family joins the PTO for $5.00, you will receive a student di-
rectory. Of course, you may also donate an additional amount to the “Sponsor-Your-
Student” fund. Remember, we have no other fundraiser – and that’s a real service to all
of you busy parents!
Senior parents – join the PTO this fall so your child can apply for the scholarship in the
spring!
Everyone is welcome to attend board meetings. It’s a great way to keep abreast of what’s
happening in the school! Our meetings are at 5:30 pm, in the CHS front office conference
room (Door 1,) on the following days: Sept. 10, Oct. 1, Nov. 5, Dec. 3, Jan. 7, Feb. 4,
March 4, April 8, and May 6.

The Semi-Formal is a ticketed event and is for grades 10-12. The freshman semi-formal is held concur-rently in the freshman cafeteria. No freshmen or middle school students will be allowed into the 10-12 dance. Outside students from other schools and CHS graduates may attend, but they must submit a permission application and a copy of a valid driver’s license. The age limit is 20 years old.
This dance is very popular and sells out quickly, so get your tickets early to reserve your spot on the dance floor!
*This year, the dance will be held in the Alumni Gym, instead of the cafeteria.
Gentlemen should wear a dress shirt and a tie or a sweater. Dress slacks are required. Ladies may purchase a dress specifically for Semi-Formal, but it is not a requirement. Girls with inappropriately short skirts and/or revealing necklines will not be admitted to the dance. Please refer to page 17 of your student handbook for more information on inappropriate attire.
Freshman Semi-Formal Dance

urday, November 10 from 7-10pm. Tickets will be $15.00 each and go on sale the week of October
29th thru November 5th. All tickets must be purchased in advance during the allotted timeframe. CHS
freshmen and their CHS sophomore guests may attend, no outside guests will be permitted. Ticket
Sales will be limited, so get yours early to secure your spot! You do not need a date to attend - most
freshman come with a group of friends. See your student council representatives if you have questions.
DRESS SUGGESTIONS: Gentlemen may dress in a tie and collared shirt or
sweater. A jacket would be nice, but is not required. Ladies may acquire a dress
