Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Nahar International Family!

NIS is a school community that works in partnership with students and parents

to provide quality education in a positive and supportive environment. This

handbook explains policies, procedures and expectations from students and

parents that help our school run smoothly and effectively. Please read it with

care; we encourage each family to review it together.

NIS encourages the development of individual talents and respects the right of

every student to his or her own opinion. However, there must be commonly

accepted standards of behaviour and communication for our school to function

optimally. These standards are published in this handbook. The school assumes

that you will read them, understand them, and, by your presence in the school,

intend to maintain them. Kindly keep it as a handy reference throughout the

school year as it will address many of your queries about NIS.

The school believes that respect for other people, honesty, and courtesy are

fundamental and the expected standard for behaviour. These, coupled with an

attitude of cooperation and mutual understanding, make for an enjoyable and

creative community life. This is what we want for everyone.

We hope you enjoy the year in learning, discovery and creative engagement.

Looking forward to a great year of learning – from, for and with you!

Warm Regards,

Vandana Arora

Principal

Introduction

The Nahar International School (NIS) was set up by the Nahar Foundation, a Trust registered under

the Bombay Public Trust Act. The School Board comprises of distinguished educationists and

administrators. The School Board governs the school. In addition, the school has an Advisory

Council comprising men and women of eminence from various fields of life.

The Principal has overall responsibility for the educational operation of NIS whereas the Nahar

Foundation is responsible for financial operations. The School is divided into four sections, the

Early Years Foundation Section, the Primary Section, the Middle School Section and the High

School Section.

Our curriculum is designed to provide the best possible all-round education to each of our students

through a comprehensive programme. The aim is to produce inquiring, confident, open-minded

children who are reflective in their thinking, balanced and well-disciplined in their behaviour; and

grow up to be caring and responsible citizens positively engaging with the society and the world.

Nahar International School will follow the Cambridge International Examination (CIE),

Cambridge, UK, curriculum till Grade X and offers IB Diploma Programme affiliated to the

International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) Geneva, Switzerland for grades XI and XII. These

programmes have the greatest respect and the widest acceptance from leading universities

throughout the world.

The school is also a candidate school for International Baccalaureate Career Program (IBCP).

It is the policy at Nahar International School that every student should be provided a fair chance to

education. NIS believes in the principles of inclusive education and shall not discriminate on the

basis of race, creed, colour, gender, nationality, cultural and economic background or special needs

and gifted children, and seeks to accept all qualified students who apply. It believes that every

student should be treated with dignity and given due rights and responsibilities. It is also the belief

of the school that students are de facto cultural ambassadors of the school and will uphold the ethos

of the school through proper deportment on and off the campus. The Nahar International School

deems it a duty to promote and develop social and global commitment.

Children in Early Years Foundation Program learn in an integrated socialization, talking, listening,

reading and writing, movement, mathematics, science, using technology, music, art and other

creative pursuits. In our Early Years Foundation Section, there is a gradual shift from informal

education based on play, towards what adults commonly regard as formal learning, mathematics,

reading and writing. Whilst children are encouraged to make progress at all times, different

children develop at different rates. Our programme allows the teachers to respond individually to

your child's needs. Children play with others co-operatively, communicate effectively in English,

listen and respond to stories, music, songs and poems, understand that print carries meaning, draw

and write, use a range of tools, materials and equipment, sort, match, order and count, compare

quantities and spatial relationships, observe and describe what they see, ask questions and express

themselves through drawing, painting, modelling, drama, and music. We encourage our students

to become independent learners and critical thinkers.

We believe every child is a gift of God, born into this world with his or her very own

unique strengths and human frailties. Each tender mind is filled with an amazing sense of

curiosity, boundless energy to explore, an immense capacity to learn, and the ability to

absorb all that is in the environment around.

At Nahar International School, we aim to provide a seamlessly stimulating surrounding

that is both welcoming and embracing, yet, challenging and testing; allowing children to

explore their full potential, find their calling and develop into well-rounded personalities

ready to meet the future, imagine the impossible, reach for the infinite.

Vision

The school is committed to developing socially responsible global citizens in a safe,

creative and educationally challenging environment that encourages collaboration and

the achievement of individual excellence through self-discovery.

Mission

Ÿ To raise a generation founded on life values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and

Citizenship

Ÿ To instill into our students the belief that their competition is only with themselves.

Ÿ To inculcate in our students a passion for learning and a curiosity about the world,

making them learners for life

Ÿ To fortify our students with the ability to discipline their own study experience

Ÿ To extend the frontiers of learning for our students, beyond books and into the

enrichment provided by art, music and sports

Ÿ To shape every student of our school into an asset for the community, applying their

knowledge and thinking to the betterment of it, through community service

Ÿ To produce Global Citizens of the 21st century by exposing our students to world

issues and perspectives.

What Curriculum Will My Child Follow?

Early Years Foundation Section

NIS's Early Years Foundation Section curriculum is aligned with

the UK Early Year Program and is designed to take care of the

following aspects of child development:

Ÿ personal, social and emotional development;

Ÿ communication, language and literacy;

Ÿ mathematical development;

Ÿ knowledge and understanding of the world;

Ÿ physical development;

Ÿ creative development

Our curriculum has well-planned, purposeful activities to engage children in the learning

process and help them make progress in their learning. It provides a structure for teaching

within which children explore, experiment, plan and make decisions for themselves, thus

enabling them to learn, develop and progress.

Your child will:

Ÿ Develop a deep understanding of important concepts, and will, through structured

inquiry, explore these concepts.

Ÿ Conduct research, at developmentally appropriate levels, into knowledge, which has local

and global significance;

Ÿ Acquire and practice a range of essential skills.

Ÿ Be encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards learning, the environment and other

people;

Ÿ Have the opportunity for involvement in responsible action and social service within the

school and local community.

Primary Section

NIS follows the Cambridge International Primary Programme - CIPP

The Cambridge Primary Programme provides a curriculum framework to develop

Mathematics, English and Science skills and knowledge in young children. The Cambridge

Primary curriculum framework identifies a comprehensive set of learning objectives for

English, Mathematics and Science for each year of primary education, which:

Ÿ provides a natural progression through the years of primary education.

Ÿ provides a valuable structure that focuses on what children should be able to do at each of

the primary stages.

Ÿ Cambridge Primary provides guidance for curriculum development and classroom

teaching and learning. It enables teachers to assess children's learning as they progress

with two assessments: Cambridge Primary Progression Tests and Cambridge Primary

Checkpoint.

The CIPP promotes the use of a range of assessment strategies, which are designed to give a

clear picture of your child's progress. This progress will be reported to you regularly, both

verbally and in writing. Parents are encouraged to play an active role in supporting their

child's learning.

The Cambridge Primary testing is structured to assess learner performance and report

progress to learners and parents. Cambridge Primary uses internationally benchmarked

tests, giving parents extra trust in the feedback they receive.

There are two levels of testing at the Primary Stage: Cambridge Primary Progression Tests

and end of grade 5 Cambridge Primary Checkpoint.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY PROGRESSION TESTS??

Ÿ The Cambridge Primary Progression Tests are a series of tests used within a school to

monitor progress of individuals and classes of students.

Ÿ They can be used to provide diagnostic feedback, which can inform further teaching and

learning, or can be used for reporting purposes. They can also be used to assess the

performance of the students against an international benchmark.

The assessment is done by the teachers in school strictly following the guidelines provided

by CIE. A few sample papers would be sent to UK to verify the same.

Formative in house test cycles will be conducted all throughout the year, testing basic

skills in children in English, Math and Science. Dates will be mentioned in the year plan.

Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Tests

The Cambridge Primary programme is culminated through the diagnostic Primary Checkpoint

Tests which give our learner an overview of his/her progress in primary as they graduate to the

secondary.

The Nahar International School Advantage – A Unique Curriculum

Along with the CIPP curricular framework which focuses on the conceptual understanding of

the three core subjects - English, Math and Science, the following are the unique features of

Nahar International School curriculum

Surroundings - Students in the early primary are introduced to the subject by exploring the

local area. As they move to the higher grades, students will broaden their horizons and

graduate to learning about national and international geography. They shall study topics like

the weather, water, landscapes and different cultures. Students will be taken on field trips,

learn to use maps, globes and atlases, photos, a variety of information sources, including the

internet. This will help them to make connections and draw conclusions about wider global

issues. Our strength at Nahar International School is the exposure we give our students

through Surroundings (Environmental studies in early primary which will culminate into

Geography in higher Grades) by initially assessing their prior knowledge about the local

environment and then progressing from national to international concepts.

Conversations - Conversations is another unique feature of our Curriculum. Conversations

aims at giving the children a better sense of themselves and the wider world in the present and

the past. A child learns to recognise and express his/ her feelings, thoughts, ideas in a safe

environment, which is an in built feature of the module.

In early primary years, the students learn how the past is different from the present. They

compare everyday items and buildings of today with items in the past and consider how

present life differs from the past.

At the end of the primary years, we offer a solid groundwork for exploring World History.

Students learn about significant periods of time, including a study of the Romans, Ancient

Egypt and Medieval History.

Throughout all grades, students will be able to look at a variety of artefacts and first and

second hand sources, including everyday items, photos and information from books or the

internet. The students will to go on a field trip to enhance teaching further.

Languages - Additional languages like Hindi and Marathi are also taken through the natural

language gradation process with age appropriate activities beginning with listening and

speaking skills at early primary years and then moving on to

reading and writing. Grade 3 onwards a Modern European

language will be offered to students.

Life Skills Program - Preparing our children for life…

At Nahar International School, we not only focus on the

core subjects, we also aim to teach our children to

recognise and apply sets of skills during their learning

opportunities. The Life Skill Program aims at enabling the

child to live a full life as a child and to realise his or her

potential. These skills are age and year group appropriate

and are chosen to be built upon year after year, enhancing

learning, better preparing them for their future and enabling a seamless transition from

school into the world.

How can I support my child's learning? The programme sees learning as a partnership

between student, parent, and school. At NIS we encourage parents to be involved - whether it

is through reading with your child, discussing school work at home, participating in language

development, or supporting teachers with activities in and out of the classroom.

You can help your child by:

Ÿ Maintaining regular contact with the school;

Ÿ Providing your child with age-appropriate books;

Ÿ Supporting your child's home language;

Ÿ Assisting your child with research projects;

Ÿ Attending curriculum information sessions at school;

Ÿ Attending parent awareness workshops/ sessions;

Ÿ Attending parent-teacher meetings;

Ÿ Providing an appropriate setting and structured routine for doing homework.

What happens when my child finishes Grade 5?

Children proceed from the Primary Section to Cambridge Secondary Section on successful

completion of Grade 5.

Page 16: Parent Teacher Handbook1 Dear Parents, Welcome to the Nahar International Family! NIS is a school community that works in partnership with students and parents to provide quality education

15

Will the CIPP help my child fit into another school?

When transferring to a school in national systems:

Ÿ Close attention has been paid to a range of national curricula when developing the CIPP

Ÿ Students transferring from international schools usually have no trouble with the

standards of their Indian Board schools

When transferring to other international schools:

Ÿ Students in other schools implementing the CIPP will have common learning experiences

in terms of conceptual development, skill acquisition, positive attitudes and meaningful

action. There will be less uniformity of specific content in certain areas, since each school

will naturally wish to reflect the unique nature of its locations.

What shall I do if I still have questions about the Early Years Foundation and CIPP?

As we see parents as our partners in the learning process, you have an obvious right to know

about the educational programme in which your child is engaged. Always contact the Early

Years Foundation Head or the Primary Head, by appointment, if there are things you want to

know about the programme.

If you have any further questions, please ask – you will find us very willing to discuss the CIPP

with you. The Head of the Primary Section and CIPP Co-ordinator, Ms. Anjali Balan has

responsibility for co-ordination of the CIPP. The Head of the Early Years Foundation Section,

Ms. Sabina Roy has the responsibility for co-ordination of the Early Years Foundation Section.

How is the day in Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section organized?

The students follow an integrated day. The NIS day is structured around a notional lesson

length of 40 minutes. There are no bells to indicate lesson changes.

Morning registration is an important part of the day, in which students and teachers deal with

routine items and settle down to introducing the day. It is important that students are punctual

in their arrival in the mornings. Timings with in the school hours change depending on the need

of the hour.

What Extra-Curricular Activities and Inter-house Competitions are offered at NIS?

What is the Hobby Activities Programme?

NIS runs an after school activity programme across the whole school – from Grade 1 onwards

language

What are the attendance policies or procedures?

NIS regards good attendance at school as essential to making progress. Attendance is taken

early in the morning every day, and any student absent is recorded in the register. If the

student is absent for more than two days, then the class teacher will call the parent to find out

the reason for the student's absence.

Attendance is recorded in the following categories:

Excused Absence

A written note is required from the parent or guardian in the School Diary. Reasons for

absences such as illness, treatment or other justifiable inability to attend school should be

included in the note.

A written note must also follow information given to Reception verbally, on the telephone, or

in person. Along with the same, a doctor's certificate is required in case of infectious illness,

showing that the child is fit to resume school.

Holiday Absence

NIS policy is that up to five days per school year may be taken as holiday absence. Absence

beyond that period for the purpose of holiday is recorded and reported as an unexcused

absence.

Arrival and Departure for Students

Arrival

Early Year Foundation Section and Primary Section students must be in the school premises

between 08:15 am and 08:25 am. Students are expected to be ready for attendance immediately on

entering their classrooms at 08.25 am. Early Year Foundation Section - Afternoon , the arrival time

is 12.20 pm.

Supervision

No supervision is provided for students before 8.15 am and therefore will be unaccompanied on

the school grounds.

Tardiness

Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section students who arrive late must report first to

the Reception, then to the HOD. Tardiness is recorded and reported in quarterly reports. Three or

more late comings will not be encouraged, beyond which, parents will be called in to school.

Repeated tardiness interrupts your child's education at NIS. The school uses discretion with

lateness due to circumstances beyond the control of the student or of the family, such as bad

traffic, weather and breakdown. These are recorded as an excused lateness.

Dispersal

Early Years Foundation Section - Morning -: 12:30 pm

Early Years Foundation Section - Afternoon : 16:30 pm

Grades 1 to 5 : 3:30 pm (all days)

Early Years Foundation Section students are collected from the gate 1 by an authorized adult.

Students from the Primary Section are collected from Gate 1 and are not permitted to leave the

area until their parent or guardian is present. If your child is being met by a driver or caregiver, a

photograph and details of this guardian must be submitted to Reception, and a pass obtained.

This pass must be shown to the duty teacher, if requested.

Students coming by school bus would board the bus from the school bus stop (behind the

Auditorium)

In the case of expected early departure, the class teacher should be

notified in writing at least a day in advance. Departure before 1.30 pm

constitutes one half-day absence.

What homework will my child get?

1) Reading Homework- The Children from Grade 1 to 5 will be having a 1 hour reading

program during the week. They will be given a suggested booklist and certain projects too.

We would like parents to encourage their children to read daily for 20 minutes to 30 minutes

on any topic that interests the child. They could extend their child's knowledge on the

curriculum topics by giving reading material related to the certain topics of interest.

2) Food- Students have to carry their own lunch. Keeping in mind the safety of your child,

school authorities will not accept food coming in late.

3) Cafeteria- If the child misses carrying lunch or fruits, he/she will be provided for in the

cafeteria and the payment for the same will have to be made the next day to the facilitator.

4) Uniform- Students need to wear their PE uniform as mentioned in the timetable and

suggested by the school. The other days they need to come in their school uniform and

bring in a change of clothes for the after school activities and swimming.

5) Homework Upload- The homework for the week will be uploaded every Friday to keep

you informed of your child's learning. Kindly ensure all the homework is been completed

at the end of every week.

How will I know how my child is doing?

At NIS, we see the child, parent and teacher as partners in the learning process. We therefore

encourage a great deal of communication about each student's progress. Our main means of

informing parents are the following:

Parents' Information Day

At the beginning of the year an information morning is held. This is an opportunity for parents

to meet their child's teachers and subject specialists. An overview of the Early Years

Foundation Program and CIPP, introduction to the staff and time with your child's class

teacher are some features of the day's programme.

Homework and Communication Book (School Diary)

Each student from the Early Years Foundation Section

and Primary Section has a School Diary and daily notes

such as homework and other short messages are written

here. These books need to be checked daily and brought

to the school every school day. Parents are welcome to

make an appointment with the class teacher via this

book or via Reception, if they would like to discuss their

child's progress.

Bulletin

The school's newsletter will be published half yearly. This is an important source of

information – Parents can update themselves about school events and happenings.

Assemblies

Here the emphasis is on sharing and not on performance. These assemblies provide an

opportunity to share work, exchange experiences, ideas and activities. They also help

promote a community spirit.

Reports

The feedback on the child's progress would be given to parents thrice a year. There are two

formats used. The teachers assess all classes and subjects, and comments are written to

describe the individual student's progress. Percentages or letter grades are not given.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

These are scheduled twice a year usually at the end of the first and second quarters. They

provide parent, students and teachers with an opportunity for in-depth discussion.

How can I be involved?

At NIS, parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance is sought and

appreciated.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is an organization designed to build a sense of

community between the school, students and families of the students. Through various

scheduled events, families have the opportunity to meet and network with one another and

help the school in organizing various events and activities.

A child's school life is greatly enriched by a family that is well-informed and active in school

affairs. NIS welcomes parent involvement and encourages close ties between parents and the

school.

You are most welcome to contact the members of the PTA General Committee. Please feel free

to speak to them if you want to get involved. Their names and contact numbers will be

intimated in due course.

22

What is my responsibility if there is a change in my address?

Please notify the school immediately of any changes to your address, telephone number, or

email.

What if there is a change in guardianship?

If parents leave home temporarily and leave their child(ren) in the care of someone else, it is

required that parents notify the school giving all dates, names, numbers and pertinent

information in advance.

Telephones

The office and classroom telephones are for school business and students may use it only in

cases of emergency with permission of the child's teacher or office staff.

What if I have a problem?

NIS makes every effort to keep the channels of communication with parents open at all times.

We see the role of parents as partners in the education process. Therefore, in addition to parent

information sessions, parent teacher interviews, student led conferences and comprehensive

reporting schedules we also have the School Diary which your child will bring home each

night.

However, occasionally unforeseen situations arise, which need to be addressed before the

next scheduled meeting time. What should you, as a concerned parent, do?

Talk with your child about the apparent problem. It may be simply a matter of a mis-

understanding that needs further thought or clarification.

If the situation requires further discussion, then please write a note in your child's School

Diary, requesting a time to talk with the teacher.

If the matter is extremely urgent and simply can't wait, then kindly contact the Reception staff

at the school and ask to arrange a convenient time to speak with your child's teacher.

The staff is happy to speak with you in an effort to resolve problems, but they need to allocate

time to hear your comments in a situation conducive to effective communication. “Dropping

in” on a busy classroom, where the teacher is working with students, is not the most suitable

way to go about meeting your needs.

Most problems are settled at this level. However, if you have met with the classroom teacher

and the matter is unresolved, then a further appointment with the Head may be necessary. In

this case, please make an appointment with the concerned Head via the Reception, briefly

stating the nature of your concern.

Issues which cannot be resolved at this level may be referred to the Principal.

What are the extra interventions for students who need help in academic subjects?

Remedial teaching, once a week, 2.30 to 3.30pm will be provided for those students from Grade

1 onwards, who will need support in Academics.

The students will be identified by their teachers.

What additional support does NIS have?

Many parents share one common wish for their children: to have a carefree and happy

childhood. But children, just as much as adults, can experience distressing times and go

through rough patches. Children's temperaments vary and

thus they are quite different in their ability to cope with stress

and daily hassles. Some are easy going by nature and adjust

easily to events and new situations; others are thrown off

balance by changes in their lives. When children are

experiencing difficulties at home or in school their

concentration and the way they behave can be adversely

affected. We recognize that each child is unique with

individual needs. To help children cope up with any

difficulties we at NIS have set up a Student Wellbeing

Department. The team has a Counsellor and Special Educator.

At NIS, the School Counsellor is the most visible and accessible

professional help for young people within the school. The

Counsellor is not just confined to her room; she visits the classroom frequently and interacts

with children. She conducts age appropriate life skill sessions in the class to empower them to

deal with any emotional and social issues. She also conducts psychological tests and provides

intervention in the form of therapy as and when required.

We all have a deep yearning to be heard and listened to. This desire and yearning to express

what is inside is even stronger in children. So our goal is to have counselling provision

available to all children so that they can express their thoughts, feelings and concerns freely.

Our Student Wellbeing Department gives children a safe, confidential, non-judgmental space

through Counselling so they can build the strength to go through life's uncertainties in a more

positive way.

The Special Educator identifies children who need assistance with academic difficulties

related to reading, writing, memorizing, math etc and helps them in the school. She also

screens children with learning difficulties using formal and informal assessments.

The Student Wellbeing Department works collaboratively with parents and facilitators to decide

on what action needs to be taken to address issues interfering with a child's learning process.

This could be academic/ social/ emotional. For this our team will constantly update themselves

and strive to do the best to reach out to all the children to make learning a positive experience for

them.

Let us together give our children the opportunity to grow up with possibilities rather than

problems. Parents can contact the counsellor or special education through the school Reception,

or email: [email protected]

What can I find out about the NIS School Libraries?

The library for the Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section is situated on the third

floor of the School Building.

The library is a central part of students' education at NIS. All

library resources are carefully chosen both to encourage a

love of reading and to support the CIPP curriculum. The

Library contains a range of attractive, well-illustrated fiction

and information books, as well as magazines, videos, posters

and computer software.

When is the library open?

The library is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am until

3:30 pm

Can parents borrow books?

All family members are very welcome to join the library, to enjoy sitting and browsing through

our collection of books and magazines. Parents are encouraged to visit the library after school,

with their children to choose books, to read together, or to work on homework together. For

licensing reasons we cannot loan computer software or videos to parents. The Library is open for

Parents from Monday to Friday from 8:45am to 9:45am and 2:30pm to 4:00pm and on Saturdays

from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

When can my child borrow books?

All Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section students visit the library every week to

choose books that they will enjoy reading. EYFS 3 may borrow one book at a time to take home.

Primary Section student may borrow two books at a time. Borrowing is not limited to these class

visits, and students are welcome to change their books more often if they wish.

Can my child have access to the internet at NIS?

An important part of the children's education today is learning to use current technology

responsibly and effectively. An important part of that technology is the network of information

sites and services that make up the Internet. Developing the skills needed to access, process,

evaluate and communicate information in all media is a significant part of education at NIS, at all

age levels, and cuts across the boundaries of academic disciplines.

The CIPP stresses the importance of students developing research skills throughout their

education. We are developing library facilities to support this learning. The Internet provides an

essential resource within the school.

Internet access is available in various sites including the Library. All students use the Internet

under the guidance of teaching staff as part of their normal class work. Students in Grade 5 and

below are always directly supervised while using the Internet. All students are required to

follow the school's Acceptable Use Policy.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or our

Librarian, Ms Jui Damle.

How do you handle ICT for students?

ICT concerns itself with enabling students to get the 'right

information in the right form, to the right audience at the right

time.' It focuses on learning itself, and as such is a tool and a

resource as a set of skills. It is delivered at NIS in the course of

general inquiry and learning by the classroom teacher, rather

than as a separate, discrete discipline. We have ICT support for

teachers and students in the classrooms.

What Physical Education (PE) will my child do?

What does my child need to wear for PE?

The PE Uniform corresponds to the house that they are placed in for the NIS inter-house

competition (see Extra-Curricular Activities section). There are five houses – Plato, Da Vinci,

Aryabhatta, Teresa, Galileo

PE Kit requirements are:

Ÿ PE Uniform (T-Shirt, Sweat Shirt and Shorts with respective house colours)

Ÿ Black shoes

Students from Grade 1 onwards should wear their PE kit to school on days when they have PE.

For After School Activity, students may carry their PE Kit.

What happens during the rainy season?

Most sports activities will take place in the Indoor Sports Room.

What if my child loses any of their PE kit?

NIS strongly recommends that all clothing items be clearly labelled. All forgotten clothing

items are collected in a Lost Property bin during the week and this is taken to the Reception on

Friday afternoon. Lost Property is stored at Reception for one week before going to the DGM's

store. Please make an appointment to see the DGM, Mr. Rajesh Mistry, to see lost property after

this time.

Additional PE shirts can be bought from the Uniform Vendors.

What sort of things will my child be doing in PE?

In the Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section, the

overriding philosophy is one of participation. We try to encourage a

healthy lifestyle by way of participating and enjoying physical activity.

Categories with PE are games, run/jump/throw, gymnastics, dance,

swimming and fitness.

Will the school arrange field trips for students?

There will be a number of school-sponsored field trips at each grade level throughout the year.

Parents/guardians will be informed in advance of all day trips planned. No further response

will be needed unless the parent wishes to withhold permission for the specified activity.

Students cannot participate in field trips unless they have the written permission of their

parent/guardian. Since the written parental permission is a legal requirement, we ask for your

co-operation in ensuring that the signed slips are returned promptly.

Students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will have the opportunity to participate in overnight field trips, up

to a maximum of three nights overnight within Maharashtra. A parent information session is

held well in advance to inform parents of the itinerary for these overnight field trips. Special

permission forms are required for these trips.

Accidents involving all students at school and on NIS sponsored activities are covered by the

NIS Insurance Policy. Please note, however, that illnesses are not. It is assumed that parents

will have appropriate health insurance cover for their children.

Who goes with the class? Can I accompany a class field trip?

When students go on excursions the school maintains a specified adult to child ratio to ensure

all of the children's safety. They also make sure that teachers have a mobile phone and

emergency numbers, as well as a first aid kit. Sometimes, parents are asked to accompany

certain trips. This entails coming to the school at a time specified by the organizing teacher, and

staying with the students until they return back to the school. Students are also required to

leave from and return to the school with the other children, even when the excursion is close to

where they live. Students are not “dropped off” at home.

27

Must I give permission for my child to go on a field trip or excursion?

For field trips/excursions parents and guardians are required to sign a permission slip before

students are allowed to participate in activities outside the school grounds.

Primary Section students enjoy these exciting days. NIS aims to make them educational, safe,

and memorable as well.

What happens if my child is injured while at school?

NIS has a health clinic which aims to provide care for the children and staff to ensure that they

can be as healthy as possible. The Health Clinic is staffed by a qualified Nurse and a Doctor on

call from the Nahar Medical Centre. The Health Clinic also

ensures that all the staff members have training and are

certified in first aid. The Health Clinic ensures regular health

check-ups of students, health education on good practices of

hygiene to avoid contacting illness and first aid. In case of

illness during the school day, the student needs to inform the

teacher. The teacher assesses the situation and informs the

nurse in the Health Clinic. If the nurse determines, that the

student is too ill to remain in school, she will contact the class

teacher. The class teacher will inform the parents about the

illness.

What if my child needs further medical treatment?

Under the terms of the NIS – Nahar Medical Centre Agreement, initial stabilization of the

student's condition takes place at The Centre. Parents decide whether to continue treatment of

the student at The Centre, or at another medical service provider. Treatment beyond initial

stabilization is entirely at the expense of parents.

When or what will my child eat at school?

During the school day students eat during break and lunchtime. Students need to bring a fruit as

snack every day for their short break. For lunch, students have the option of bringing their own

lunch or have the lunch in the cafeteria.

It is important that each child arrives at NIS ready to start a full day's work. In order to do this

they need to have eaten sufficient healthy breakfast. NIS is a vegetarian school and the cafeteria

serves wholesome vegetarian food for students. Hence, students who carry food from home are

not allowed to carry non vegetarian food.

Early Years Foundation Section and Primary Section students are not allowed to have

carbonated drinks e.g. Coke, Fanta etc.

The students eat their snacks in the cafeteria.

Lunch time (30 minutes) as per the time table

The students eat either their packed lunch, or lunch in cafeteria, and have playtime outside. The

order of these events will depend on the Grade level of your child.

How do we pay for the school lunches?

Ÿ Students make the above choice on the basis of a monthly block. They cannot change from

day-to-day. A menu for the month can be downloaded from the school website in advance.

Ÿ The students will pay for the lunch on a quarterly basis.

What does my child have to eat?

All students are served full meal. Eating the vegetables or main course is encouraged by teachers

but not enforced. Students can return to the serving area to have second helpings.

Can I send 'cup noodles' in as a packed lunch?

There won't be any provision in the school to warm the food brought from home.

What if my child forgets the packed lunch?

It is the responsibility of the parent to procure the ZETA card to avoid any unpleasant sitution for

child.

The parent need to invest in a ZETA card. Incase the child forgets the packed lunch, the child can

swipe his/her ZETA card at the Kiosk and procure the food. Incase the child does not have a

ZETA card the class children will share their food with your child.

What is the School Bus System at NIS?

NIS has a bus service facility. The staff are well trained and the bus lady attendants are on the

NIS pay roll.

Students are expected to follow the bus rules and behave appropriately on the bus at all times.

All parents will receive a booklet of information pertaining to the bus system at the beginning of

the year. Bus students and parents are required to sign the Code of Conduct for the School Bus

form.

Request you to, notify the Bus Co-ordinator if you do not require the bus on a particular day or if

you come to school to collect your child in person.

Bus Discipline Procedure (Will be as per our transport policy)

Safety is our concern. Therefore, we must enforce bus rules written and developed and adopted

as policy by the NIS. Students receive annual notification of behaviour expectations on their bus

pass. Student co-operation is vital to help us achieve our goal of providing safe transportation.

Instances of unacceptable behaviour and their consequences as mentioned in the transport

policy.

How do we celebrate birthdays?

Teachers will recognize student birthdays as appropriate for the age in question. Invitations to

private birthday parties may be distributed at school only if all children in the class are invited.

NIS discourages special arrangements made by parents for parties at school during the day.

Parents who would like their child's birthday celebrated must make arrangements with the

teacher in advance. The celebration must be limited to a tea cake or cupcakes– no gifts or treat

bags – and last no longer than 15 minutes.

What can my child bring to school and what is not allowed?

Prohibited Items at School

Students are asked not to bring items to school that are potentially dangerous to personal safety

or to school property. Students are also asked not to bring items to school that may be disruptive

to the school environment including radios, music players, electronic games, trading cards/cell

phones or any other item prohibited by the school authority, etc.

Gum Chewing

Gum Chewing is not permitted.

Page 32: Parent Teacher Handbook1 Dear Parents, Welcome to the Nahar International Family! NIS is a school community that works in partnership with students and parents to provide quality education

31

What are the discipline procedures in the Primary Section?

NIS aims to promote positive reinforcement of good behaviour. It is essential to maintain

discipline. The discipline guidelines are developed to provide consistency and fairness and

help students to understand the consequences of their actions.

It is in effect during the school day and on the school premises for all adults and students in the

school. It is also in effect on school study trips.

Inappropriate Behaviour

Ÿ Breaking classroom or school rules. (Coming late to school frequently

Ÿ Inflicting bodily harm to oneself or others.

Ÿ Inappropriate language

Ÿ Bullying (physical and verbal)

Ÿ Vandalism or Theft

Consequences of Inappropriate Behaviour

Teachers will take appropriate disciplinary action if a student violates any rule.

Guidelines for Deciding Consequences:

Ÿ Students are not ridiculed in front of their peers.

Ÿ Adults speak to students with respect at all times, and expect the same consideration in

return.

Ÿ Students are not be excluded from a lesson without adequate supervision.

Ÿ No form of corporal punishment is allowed.

Ÿ Adults needs to understand and empathise when deciding consequences.

Consequences of Severe Inappropriate Behaviour

1st offence: Parents will be informed by the class teacher. Parents are required to sign and

return the letter.

2nd offence: Parents are required to come to school to meet with the student, class teacher and

respective Co-ordinator.

3rd offence: A letter is sent home to parents and an in-school suspension is sanctioned.

4th offence: Parents meet with the Head, class teacher and school counsellor to discuss

further options.

Visitors

Guests and visitors must register in the office and receive a guest card. Parents are always

welcome and requested to meet the Front Desk Executive on their arrival. Please be sure your

visit has been scheduled with the teacher or the office. Students who wish to bring a guest to

school must obtain prior approval from the office.

Building Security

Every parent expects assurance in terms of their child's security while admitting them to a

school. Strictly adhering to it, the main gate of NIS has a secure entry point through an RFID

card, which reads and only then allows access inside. NO parents or outsiders are allowed on

the Academic Floors when the school is in session as per the security regime. All the security

related evacuation plans are in place and are tested through various trial runs each week,

leaving no stone unturned at child's safety.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Law requires Monthly/Routine fire drills and is an important safety precaution as the NIS is a

multi-storeyed complex. It is essential that when the fire alarm is sounded all students and

adults in the building obey promptly and clear the building by the prescribed route as quickly

as possible. The teacher in each classroom will give students instructions to be followed

during a fire drill. Fire drill procedures are posted in each room. Any visitors in the building

should follow posted evacuation procedures or staff direction.

What if I wish to withdraw my child from NIS?

The parents who decide to withdraw their children at the end of the academic year must

submit written application 2 months prior to the respective HOD. This will also enable the

school to process the required documents relevant to withdrawal of the student. Otherwise,

the first term fee will be charged and the school leaving certificate will be issued only after the

school re-opens.

School leaving certificate will be issued, only if, a withdrawal form is prepared which checks

on things as library books, outstanding fees, forwarding address and if there has been any

damage to property, it should be replaced and so forth.

Fees once paid for the term will not be refunded. Fees paid in advance for the next term will be

refunded provided relevant documents are attached.

Transfer Certificate will be issued only after all clearance formalities are completed including

the clearance of dues. Transfer certificate will be issued within fifteen working days of the

request.

33

Payment of Fees

The school year starts in July and ends in May. At the beginning of each session parents will
