SCHOOL NEWS Arts Award Trip to the Whitechapel
Gallery
On Tuesday 20th November 2018, 20 Year
7 & 8 students attended an exciting Arts
Award trip to the Whitechapel Gallery. As part
of this visit, students engaged in a work
shop organised by CO-DB, a
company specialising in design
in public spaces and
responsible for designing items
for a pop-up playground at the
Barbican. During the workshop,
students had to build a piece
of furniture for a
classroom. Our group
built a sofa and others
designed things like
dens, chairs and book
corners, using a range
of materials. We also
visited the current
‘Elmgreen and Dragset’
exhibition, which included an abandoned
swimming pool that inspired us to redesign a
public pool for the local community. Our idea
was to transform it into an indoor beach, with
digital fish! We had a fun day and learnt a lot
about designing spaces for public
environments.

THEME & WORD
OF THE WEEK Advent – The Old Testament frequently
makes references to the coming of a messiah – a messenger from God. Many
of the readings of Advent speak of a time when there will be peace and an
end to suffering. This is what most of us would really hope for, if we thought
hard about the world as it is now.
Endear Definition: Cause to be loved or liked.
Flora’s generous spirit and modest
character endeared her to everyone who
met her.
The Big Draw Competition
Having won the Big Draw competition
in 2016, Kingsdale is entering the
annual nationwide Big Draw festival
again, but this time with a
performance piece that celebrates the
synesthetic experience of drawing to
music. The theme of the competition
this year is ‘Play’, so this concept is
really appropriate.
With Art, Textiles and Photography students working
alongside the Music, Drama, PE and Dance departments,
this is a fully cross-curricular collaborative piece. We
have recorded the brilliant junior steel pan band playing
one of their pieces and this is the music we are using
to inspire the drawing activities. There are events being
held during after school clubs but on Thursday 6th
December there will be a lunchtime drop-in session for
ALL keen artists to get involved. This will be in AR5 at
12-12.40pm for students to experiment with different
media and enjoy the art of drawing what they hear.
Accelerated Reader Programme
Kingsdale Year 7s accelerate their reading!
At Kingsdale the English department strive to encourage
our students to read independently. Recent research
confirms that regular reading of appropriately challenging
books is the most important thing young people can do
to improve their literacy and their general academic
performance.
To further encourage independent reading, the English
department has provided all year 7 students with an
Accelerated Reader account; an online account which
tracks independent reading. With a database of over
20,000 books, many of which are in our library, students
can read independently. Teachers will also use the
programme in class to test student reading ages to help
them choose books which might offer an appropriate level
of challenge.
Students have been provided with usernames
and passwords by their English teachers to
log on to the Accelerated Reader
programme and get started.
We look forward to seeing our students’
progress. For queries on the programme,
please contact your child’s English
teacher via the email below:
Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents
Book Title: It’s Kind of a Funny Story
Author: Ned Vizzini
Age Range: 12+
Why students should read it:
Ambitious New York City teenager
Craig Gilner is determined to
succeed in life - which means
getting into the right high school
to get into the right job. But once
Craig aces his way into Manhattan's
Executive Pre-Professional High School, the pressure
becomes unbearable. He stops eating and sleeping
until, one night, he nearly kills himself.
Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into
hospital, where his new neighbours include a girl who
has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-
elected President Armelio. There, Craig is finally able
to confront the sources of his anxiety.

A Level students visit Cambridge AIM Conference
on 'Poems of the Decade'
On Monday 26th November, we were fortunate enough
to take some of our Sixth Form English Literature
students to Cambridge University to attend a
conference on selected poetry.
Students heard lectures by staff
from the university all focused
on poems covered in the A Level
exam specification. Students were
amazed by the efficiency of their
presenters and reported that the sessions were ‘an
excellent refresher’ for content, whilst also offering ‘some
really interesting insights’ into the poems. Overall, the visit
was both engaging and highly useful for the important
upcoming exams.
Years 7 & 8 Netball Teams
A big well done to the
Year 7 & 8 Netball team
for their recent game
against City of London
Academy. The Year 8s
'smashed it’ with a 19-0
score. The Year 7s played
really well and drew.
Despite it being their first game they dominated the
court. Well done to all players!
HOUSE NEWS The House Race in the Food Drive Begins!
The House Team need your support! Do you
know every day people in the UK go hungry for
reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an
unexpected bill on a low income? A simple box
of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks
helping prevent crime, housing loss, family
breakdown and mental health problems.
How can you help?
We need your food donations.
Non-perishable items such as:
Canned Foods: Meats, including poultry and
spam; tuna and salmon.
Soups, stews, chili, gravy, and sauces.
Dried Goods.
Mixtures including pancake mix.
Tea bags.
Grains, rice & packaged pasta.
Granulated sugar.
Peanut butter.
Syrup and honey.
Bottled Water
With your help we can make a huge difference this
Christmas. Food banks offer a lot more than food.
Volunteers provide a listening ear to clients over a
warm drink and signpost people to other charities
and agencies who can help
resolve the underlying cause of
the crisis. Food banks rely on
--the support of local
----------------------------communities to help stop UK ---
----------------------------hunger.
WE INTEND TO COLLECT THE
AMOUNT OF FOOD EQUAL
TO A FULLY GROWN GIRAFFE!
----------------------------With your help we can do this.
Each donation will be accredited to each House and
therefore contribute to the overall quantity we collect.
May the best House win!

Student school email system We continue to promote the use of our school
student email system. This powerful two-way
system is used by staff to communicate with our students,
including curriculum and organisational information.
Students have been issued with their login details and those
who have not yet accessed these details, should contact
their tutors as soon as possible. We would be very
grateful if parents could encourage their child/ren to log
onto this new system and to check their school email
accounts on a very regular basis to avoid missing great
opportunities.
