Dear Parents and Friends of St Mary’s,

Last Wednesday we had our School Validation as part of our School Review and Improvement Process. Many thanks to parents, staff and students who contributed to this process. We received an affirming report with commendations and rec-ommendations and have a very clear direction in which we are headed. I will share this report at the next P&F Meeting.

Congratulations to our Junior B Netballers who played and won their finals last Friday. A huge thank you to Mr Shillington and all who coached, managed and refereed games throughout the year for our interschool sports. Well done!

On Sunday three St Mary’s Teams competed in the regional Opti-Minds Competition. Lily Hart, Tayah Ellis, Isabella Hutton and Summer Laurie won the first place for the Social Science category and are now eligible to compete in the state finals. Hayden Ellis, Jett Kalmikovs, Zachary McIntyre, Lily Edwards and Jacob Redmond were awarded the Spirit of Opti-minds Award for the Science and Engineering category. Congratulations to all students who represented St Mary’s and many thanks to Miss Nevell for supporting and encouraging these students.

Today Miss McNamara, Mr Shillington, Mr Lyons and I will be attending a NAPLAN Online training run by the QCAA in preparation and readiness for next year.

On Thursday, St Mary’s will host a number of Cairns Taipans basketball players who will play games against student teams at 1:30pm in Coolock Court. We have invited a number of students who are involved in local fixtures to participate in these games, which will be in a mock NBL format. All students will participate in cheering for their classmates and parents are most welcome to attend!

On Friday, the Year 1 students welcome their Grandparents to school for the morning. The students are looking forward to learning more about life in the “olden” days.

Each year our School Board offer a Board Preservice for parents who are interested in finding out about the role of the School Board. This year our Board Preservice will be held at 6:30 pm Monday 10

th September in the school library. You

are invited to attend.

Strength from the Lord

This week Jesus persists in telling his followers that he is the ‘bread of life’. This causes much concern amongst his followers and the people of the day. In this climate of tension and confusion many of Jesus’ flock walked away from him and his message. It was Peter who stood up and proclaimed his faith in Jesus and what he was teaching, and along with the other apostles he continued to follow him. Sometimes in today’s equally tense and confused world, it is hard to stand up for what we believe in and not to take the easier option of walking away with the crowd. With God’s help and the strength we can gain from sharing in his

Body and Blood during the Eucharist we can be like Peter and be filled with integrity. What an example we can set to our children and the rest of society! I pray that we can all find a way to stand up for what we believe in this week. Chris Murphy APRE

Curriculum Corner Term 3 Week 7 Miss Louise McNamara Acting APC (Assistant Principal – Curriculum) Reading – CAFÉ Goal: Expand Vocabulary – Strategy: Use Pictures, Illus-trations, and Diagrams Readers increase their vocabulary by paying attention to pictures, illustrations and diagrams. They use the context of the sto-ry, their background knowledge of what is being read, and at times infer to gain meaning of the word and text. Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge concluded last Friday 24th August. Completed forms need to be handed into the office by tomorrow, Wednesday 29th August please. Congratulations to those students who have already submitted their form. Book Week All students had the opportunity to celebrate Book Week in a variety of ways last week. The Book Swap was once again a success with many students finding a “new” treas-ure. A huge thanks must go to Mrs Murphy and her team for making this event happen. Many children enjoyed listening to teachers read stories in the li-brary before school and during playtime last week. It was great to see lots of happy book worm “customers” coming along for stories. Thank you to all families who came along to Books at Bedtime last week. The night was buzzing with book excitement! A special thanks to a small group of upper school students who came along too. Parenting Ideas The topic for this week is Ten Common Discipline Mis-takes. Here are 10 common and easily avoided mis-takes parents make when disciplining their children. Replace these mistakes with better techniques and you’ll be on your way to parent-ing easy street. Click here to read more. Debating This Wednesday our St Mary’s Debating Teams will compete in Round 1 of the Rockhampton Catholic Primary Schools Debating Competition. Team 1 – Keenan Van Moorsel, James Toman and Harriet Farrell will argue for the affirmative, “Every primary school student should play a musical instrument” Team 2 – Aleetza Sutton, Aliana Manderson and Olivia Noonan will argue for the negative, “Every school should have solar power” We wish these students all the best for their debates.

Josephine Wants to Dance Last Tuesday our Prep-Yr 3 students went to the Pilbeam Theatre to see the show Josephine Wants to Dance. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance – check out reflections from the Preps and Yr 1s. Reflections from Prep students I like Josephine because she was wearing pink on her dress and pink ballerina shoes. I like the shoes because they had dancers on them. I just love the shoes. (by Matilda) Josephine was beautiful because she wore a pink tutu and pink silk shoes. (by Chelsea) The lyrebirds were the best. I like Josephine’s little brother. The moves were very cool. (by Isobel) I liked the show so much. I liked the kangaroo. The shoes were so big. The ballerinas were so beautiful. Josephine got roses. (by Lydia) Reflections from Yr 1s On Tuesday we got to go to the theatre. It was exciting. We got to see Josephine Wants to Dance. We loved it. My favourite part was when the lyrebirds came out. (by Ava) We went to the theatre on Tuesday. We went to see Josephine Wants to Dance. It was sensational and amazing! (by Zoe) Josephine loved to dance. One morning she saw lyrebirds. Then her little brother came along and told her the other kangaroos want-ed to see them. “Kangaroos don’t dance, they eat, they hop and they do not dance, Josephine.” It was great fun to watch it with my

friends. (by Holly) On Tuesday, lots of children went to see Josephine Wants to Dance. We had to go on a bus to get to the Pilbeam Theatre. When I walked into the theatre I saw a little screen that had the stage on it. My favourite part was when Josephine scared the danc-ing teacher and the boy! Then the girl who was supposed to be the swan twisted her ankle and the back-up dancer got a nail in her foot. It was hilarious. I loved it! (by Charlotte) Have a lovely week! Louise McNamara

APRE NEWS - Term 3 Week 7 From Mrs Chris Murphy—APRE (Assistant Principal - Religious Education) ASSEMBLY On Friday Year 1 will lead a liturgy to celebrate grandparents as part of their Grandparents’ Day. Please join us at 10.15am in Coolock. PARISH/SCHOOL MASS Our Parish /School Mass is taking place at 12.00pm on Wednesday. Please join us. Virtue of the Week - INTEGRITY Integrity is standing up for what you believe is right. People with integrity are honest and sincere with themselves and with others. You have integrity if your words and actions match. You don’t trick yourself into doing what you know is wrong. You fill your life and your mind with things that help you to live a good life. The Virtue Project, The Educator’s Guide, Linda Kavelin Popov, 2000, p 187 Peter showed integrity when he stepped forward to declare he be-lieved in Jesus. We need integrity to stand up for what we believe. CHILDRENS’ MASS A reminder that our parish has a Children’s Mass on the 3rd Satur-day of each month at Our Lady Help of Christians, Main St, Park Avenue at 6.00pm. On the 4th Sunday of each month a Children’s Mass is held at 9.00am at Holy Family Church, Feez St. Please

consider bringing your children along to join these great celebra-tions. PARISH NEWSLETTER QUOTES Our students have been surveyed about their thoughts on a number of topics including God, prayer and attending Mass. Some of their thoughts are appearing in the Parish newsletters. This week we heard from these St Mary’s students. What do you enjoy about going to Church? That we always pray – Jace, St. Mary’s School What do you love about your school? I love learning about Mary – Rhys ST MARY’S FEAST DAY Next week we will celebrate our school Feast Day on Friday, Sep-tember 7. Class News 2M Term Three has been packed with many exciting learning experi-ences so far. In English we have been reading and writing Narra-tives, the latest one being a fractured ‘Fairy Tale’. Later in the term these tales will be transformed into short skits to be performed in our Drama lessons. In Math we have been investigating the con-cepts of division, fractions, reading calendars, the seasons of the year and tricky addition strategies for two digit numbers. Our Reli-gion unit this term is focussed on making good choices at home and at school as we try to become W.E.S.T. people. In our scrip-ture study we are looking at what ‘The parable of the Good Samari-tan’ means for our lives today. Last week our class and students from many other schools were entertained by the performance of “Josephine Wants to Dance” at the Pilbeam theatre. The students were completely engaged by the antics of Josephine the kangaroo in her quest to become a balleri-na. “I really liked that Josephine’s brother, Joey, could do break-dancing and hip-hop” (Hamish Galletly) Also last week we attended the RACQ presentation on Thursday and learned some vital elements of pedestrian, cycling and passen-ger safety. “We learned that we needed not to annoy the driver while he or she is driving. You must always wear a helmet when riding your bike and it must fit properly and be in the correct position on your head.” (Archer Allridge) “Always remember when you are crossing the road to Stop, Listen, Look and Think!” (Charli Borg) DRESS LIKE A FARMER DAY On Friday 14th September we will be having a “Dress like a Farmer” day as a fundraiser for drought stricken farm-ers. Please support us by sending in a gold donation which will be collected and sent to our western schools so that vouchers can be bought from local business to help the western economy.
