Teacher assessment based

on revision activities and

class work.

Speaking and Listening assessments do not count towards the GCSE grade awarded for English Language but are reported back to students in number form. This ranges from 5 – 1 with 5 being the highest a student could achieve

and 1 the lowest. Teachers are able to include these assessments at any time during the course from Y10 onwards and may give more than one opportunity for students to complete one of the three required tasks: individual

presentation, group discussion and performance in role.

English Literature: English teachers will choose one play and one novel from the list below to teach to their

group.

Novel: Plays: Heroes Othello Never Let Me Go Blood Brothers About a Boy An Inspector Calls A View from the Bridge Hobson’s Choice Silas Marner A Taste of Honey A Christmas Carol The History Boys

Lord of the Flies

Useful resources: Interactive textbooks are available in the student area of the MLE. These contain useful revision exercises for the English Language GCSE examinations.

SUBJECT: Computing Exam Board: OCR No:TBC

COURSE CONTENT

GCSE Computing equips students with the knowledge of how computers work and provides practical programming skills. The course is mainly theory based but has two elements of class-based controlled assessment work in years 10 and 11. The course breaks down as follows: Year 10 – Controlled assessment (30%) This is a practical investigation where students build or adapt a computer system such as contact form on a web page. They must conduct research so that they can explain how the code works and write new code to perform new functions. In previous years the languages used have been HTML and JavaScript. Year 11 – Controlled assessment (30%) Students write code in order to create a computer program that solves a problem. In previous years students have used the Python programming language in this assessment module. Year 11 – Exam (40%) Exam theory covers topics such as:

Computing fundamentals (What makes a computer system?/ Standards) Hardware (CPU/Fetch execute cycle/Types of memory) Software (System utilities/Open source Vs Proprietary Vs Off the shelf)

Data representation (Binary/Hexadecimal/Adding binary numbers/Character sets) Networks (Network hardware/IP & MAC Addressing/File types) Databases (Relational databases/Validation/Verification/Queries/Redundancy) Programming (Interpreting and creating flowcharts and pseudo code to solve problems) For a full breakdown of the content visit the Teach-ict.com link that is listed in the resources below.

YEAR 11

Coursework runs for approximately 20 hours in year 11. The remainder of this time is taken learning computing theory. Last year students covered Hardware, Networks and Representing data units in lessons. Useful Websites: - http://www.teach-ict.com/gcse_computing - This link takes you to the GCSE Computing

page where each of the sections are matched up with the sections in the exam board’s specification. This is an excellent resource for revision and further reading.

- www.codeacademy.com – Students can learn to program in the Python language that we will be using in lessons through this website. It is highly recommended that students teach themselves to program on this course. They will be taught how to program in classes but, as with learning a musical instrument, practice improves performance.

- Book 1: OCR Computing for GCSE by Sean O’Byrne and George Rouse. This book is matched to the course specification and covers the content set by the exam board.

- Book 2: My revision notes - OCR Computing for GCSE by Sean O’Byrne and George Rouse. This book is more lightweight than the first and is ideal to revise from.

SUBJECT: GCSE Drama Exam Board: Edexcel No: 5Dr01/5Dr02/5Dr03

COURSE CONTENT

Unit One (Mad World) –. Students will explore the themes and issues of ‘Madness’ through practical work in the classroom. Students will be given another drama logbook, which is tailored to help the pupils achieve as a high a mark as possible. Students who succeed will complete this in detail and follow the advice it contains. They will be awarded a mark out of 40 and given detailed feedback on how to improve this mark. Students will complete the written response to this practical work under exam conditions, during their drama lessons. They will be allowed to have their drama logbooks with them when completing the written work; students with detailed logbooks often score the highest marks. This written work will be marked out of 20 and again the students will be given clear, written feedback on how to improve their final score. Skills Bash – Students will go over key skills in preparation Unit Three. The scheme provides the opportunity for students to develop their confidence through creating a solo performance and looks at other performance skills that will be essential for success in the practical exam. Students will also look at past students exam work and evaluate why it was successful. Unit Three (performance exam) – The final 40% of the GCSE is marked by an external examiner (please see above for more details). Students usually perform this in May and once a date is confirmed, you will be notified. Students will have the opportunity for extra rehearsals every night after school, during the Easter holidays and the weekend before the date of the exam. Students will be marked out of 80 and again will be issued with a ‘how to achieve the highest mark’ logbook.

YEAR 11 Unit One (30% of the final grade, marked by the classroom teacher) In Unit One, students will practically explore the theme of Madness, using the Strategies, Medium and Elements taught when they first begin the course. Students will study a range of different stimuli and then create practical work based on the themes and issues of this. Students are marked on everything they do in the classroom and will be scored out of 40 by their teacher. Pupils will then write a documentary response, under exam conditions in which they explain what they did in the classroom and why they made the decisions they did. This is marked out of 20, giving students a total score out of 60. Unit Two (30% of the final grade, marked by the classroom teacher) In Unit Two, students will study the play Too much punch for Judy by Mark Wheeller. We will look at the themes and issues surrounding the play, along with the characters and the style. Students will practically explore the text using the Strategies, Medium and Elements of Drama. Students are marked on everything they do in the classroom and will be scored out of 30 by their teacher. Pupils will then write a documentary response, under exam conditions in which they explain what they did in the classroom and why they made the decisions they did. This is marked out of 10. During Unit Two we will also take the students to see a Live Performance, with the students writing a review of the show and the impact it had on them under exam conditions. This will be marked out of 20, giving students a total score out of 60. Unit Three (40% of the final grade, marked by an external examiner) Students will work in groups of 3-6 and create a final performance lasting around 20 minutes to be performed to a visiting examiner. The drama must be based on a word issued by the examination board and demonstrate all the skills they have learnt over the two year course. Students are marked out of 80.
